The left knee was worse in the mornings.
This was a new development — not the stiffness itself, which had been present for several weeks, but the duration of it. Previously it resolved within thirty minutes of movement. Now it persisted for closer to an hour, requiring a specific warm-up sequence before the joint would agree to function at full capacity. Lysandra had adjusted her morning routine accordingly, adding the sequence before she left her room, which meant rising earlier, which meant a different quality of the pre-dawn hours than she was accustomed to.
She did not find this distressing. She found it logistical.
The warming tincture went on first, worked into the joint with the patient attention of someone who has made peace with the fact that certain maintenance procedures are now non-negotiable. Then the sequence — ten minutes, focusing on the connective tissue rather than the muscle, persuading the crystallized edges of the joint to accept flexibility before they were asked to perform it. Then standing, testing weight distribution, making the small adjustments that the new morning-state required.
Then the journal. Today's entry was brief: *Left knee warm-up extended to 60 minutes. Temperature 2 degrees — colder than forecast. Adjusted tincture ratio. Performance in seven days.*
She added, after a moment: *He arrives early every time. I have stopped being surprised by this.*
She closed the journal and went to the cathedral.
The preliminary round venue was a proper performance hall — not the grand spaces of the Royal Academy's main building, but a legitimate stage with proper lighting and a capacity of two hundred. Real seating. A program. People who had come specifically to watch and evaluate.
Valerius was already in the warm-up area when she arrived. She had calculated his likely arrival time based on three weeks of observational data and had adjusted her own accordingly — arriving twelve minutes later than the time she would have come for her own purposes, because she had learned that he needed the first minutes in a new performance space alone, that his relationship with unfamiliar acoustics was personal and required private negotiation before he was ready to share the space with anyone.
He was standing near the center of the warm-up area when she came in, not playing, simply standing with the Aetheris under his chin and the bow at his side, listening. This was also something she had learned: before a performance in a new space, he listened to the room. He was gathering acoustic information with the specific attention of someone who processes space primarily through sound rather than sight.
She went to her own warm-up position on the far side of the room and began her sequence without disturbing him.
She watched him, in the way she watched him — the peripheral, accumulated attention of someone who has filed enough data that new data slots into place with increasing precision. His shoulders today were different from yesterday: higher, with a particular set to them that she had come to identify as controlled tension rather than the resigned tension of grief. The hands were moving — not in the absent patterns of the early weeks, but in specific, intentional sequences, working through passages. He was preparing. The preparation had the quality of a person who was preparing because they intended to succeed, not because they were trying to manage the possibility of failure.
This was different. This was Valerius as he had been before — or something new that had some of the same qualities, the competence without the performance of it, the seriousness without the weight.
She added a small observation to her internal catalog and continued her warm-up.
When he finished his listening and came across the room toward her, his face had resolved into the particular configuration she associated with pre-performance readiness: focused, contained, the social layers thinned to their minimum. He did not require a lot of conversation in this state. She had learned to match his register.
"The room carries bass frequencies longer than I expected," he said. "I'll need to adjust the bow pressure in movement one to compensate."
"The movement will need adjustment too," she said. "I felt the floor resonance differently than the cathedral. More rigid."
He nodded, processing this. "We can run a modified warm-up set — not the full first movement, just the structural bones of it. Thirty minutes."
"Twenty-five," she said. "I need to conserve."
His eyes came to her face with a small shift in their quality — not alarm, but a heightening of the specific attention he paid to her when something she said diverged from pattern. She had said conserve without thinking, which was a lapse of the calibration she normally maintained around him.
"The floor resonance," she said, smoothly. "It draws more energy from the Weave-Dancing than the cathedral stone. I need to manage output."
This was true, technically, though it was not the only truth. He received it and filed it and moved on, which was what she needed him to do.
The twenty-five minute warm-up was focused and efficient. They ran the structural skeleton of the first movement — not full performance, not full resonance, enough to calibrate the body's understanding of the space and the instrument's relationship with the room. The Aetheris settled into the hall's acoustics with the particular responsiveness she had come to expect from it: a brief period of adjustment, then a gradual alignment with the available resonance frequencies, the instrument finding what the room offered and deciding how to use it.
In the final minutes of the warm-up, he played a short phrase she didn't recognize.
Not part of their performance structure. Not an exercise. A phrase with its own internal logic, brief — eight bars — with the quality of something that existed for its own reasons rather than as preparation for something else. She stopped moving and listened to it.
He finished it and looked up to find her watching him.
"What was that?" she asked.
A pause. "Something I was working on. It's not — it doesn't go anywhere yet." He looked at the Aetheris. "It keeps appearing when I'm not paying attention to it."
She looked at him for a moment. "Where does it appear?"
"In the evenings. After rehearsal." He said this with the careful matter-of-factness of someone describing a fact rather than disclosing something. "I don't know what it is yet."
She thought about the improvised phrases she had been hearing more frequently in their sessions — the moments when the Aetheris moved beyond the choreographed structure and into something responsive, something personal. She thought about what that kind of music meant about the state of the person making it.
She said: "It'll tell you what it is when it's ready."
He looked at her with the expression that meant he had received a sentence and was determining whether it was useful or merely kind. Then he nodded, in the way of someone who has decided it is both, and returned to his warm-up.
The backstage area was a narrow corridor with three doors leading to the stage, the sound of the house filtering through dimly — the murmur of two hundred people taking their seats, the distant sound of the house manager announcing the program. Valerius stood against the wall with the Aetheris at his side. She stood beside him, close enough to be in the same conversation but not so close as to intrude on the specific form of pre-performance solitude that she had learned he required.
She was aware of the cold in her left knee, which she was managing. She was aware of the warmth of the lighting system's overhead lanterns, which helped. She was aware of his breathing — slower than hers, more regulated, the deliberate breath management of someone who had been trained to maintain physiological control under pressure.
She was aware of her own hand moving to her collarbone and stopped it before he could see.
"Movement three," he said, quietly. "The final passage. There's a moment in it where the resonance has to carry the room rather than fill it. The difference is—"
"I know the difference," she said.
"I wanted to be sure we were using the same definition."
She looked at him. He was looking at the door. "We are," she said.
A pause. The house noise continued beyond the door, the specific sound of anticipation building in a crowd. She thought about what was beyond that door — the lights, the two hundred people, the scoring criteria that would determine their place in the competition — and found, as she usually did, that the thought of performing was not what made her chest tight. What made her chest tight was standing in this narrow corridor with his shoulder three inches from hers and the Aetheris between them and the knowledge, clear and settled as the crystallization in her left foot, that she had approximately three weeks left to stand here.
She pressed the thought flat and looked at the door.
"I want to tell you something," he said. His voice was quieter than usual. Not uncertain — deliberate, with the quality of someone who has decided to say a true thing and is saying it carefully.
She waited.
"When I play," he said, "I have always played to something. Even when I couldn't play at all, the mechanism was still there — the searching for the thing to play to. My mother. An idea. A standard." He was quiet for a moment. "For the past four months there was nothing to play to. The music had nowhere to go."
She kept her breathing even.
"I'm telling you this," he said, "because I want you to know what it means that I can play again. What the specific cause is." He did not look at her. He looked at the door. "I'm playing to you. That's the mechanism. I thought you should know."
The backstage corridor held them both in its warm, narrow space.
She found, after a moment, that her voice was functional. "I hear you," she said, which was not the response she had prepared — was not a response she had prepared at all — but was, in the moment, the only accurate thing available.
He nodded once.
The door opened. The stage manager appeared. The house lights dimmed.
She walked out into the light beside him, and she did not think about three weeks, and she played her part in what they had built together with everything she had, which was the only thing she had ever known how to do.
