The preliminary round venue was larger than the warm-up rooms had suggested.
Valerius had calibrated for two hundred; the actual house held closer to two-fifty, the additional seating visible in the extra rows that had been added at the back and the standing positions along the gallery above. The other competing acts were visible in the wings — six pairs in their preliminary group, ranging from competent to genuinely impressive, the technical quality of the field higher than the previous selection rounds had suggested. The new head examiner's standards were already shaping the competition's character.
He assessed them with the systematic attention he applied to any performance environment: the paired Resonance Singers from the Northern Academy who produced Cadence work of technical brilliance and minimal emotional content; the Instrumental Duo with the rare matched instruments that created harmonic magic independently of the players' emotional state; the traditional Cadence dance pair whose Academy training was impeccable and whose work was, therefore, entirely predictable. He catalogued strengths, noted technical weaknesses, identified the areas where his own work with Lysandra would need to exceed rather than simply match.
Lysandra was not looking at the other acts.
She was looking at the audience.
He had noticed this at Ashwick and noted it as a difference in their preparation methods — she gathered information from rooms rather than from competitors, which was not the approach his training had given him but which he had come to understand as its own form of intelligence. She was reading something in the house that he was not reading, and their combined assessment of the situation was more complete for the difference.
"The gallery," she said, quietly, beside him. "Third section from the right. Someone standing rather than seated."
He did not look immediately — had learned not to make the obvious shift that draws attention to the act of looking. He waited until the natural movement of their pre-performance conversation gave him an angle. Then he looked.
A man, standing in the gallery's third section with the particular quality of stillness that belongs to people who are professionally comfortable being observed. Not young — late forties, perhaps, with the build of someone whose physical conditioning had been maintained past the point where most people allow it to lapse. Dark clothing, no Academy insignia, which was conspicuous at an event that was substantially populated by people wearing their institutional affiliations. His attention was directed at the stage, which was not unusual. The quality of his attention was unusual — systematic, evaluative, with the specific character of official assessment rather than personal enjoyment.
He was looking at Lysandra.
Not at the pair as a unit. At her specifically.
"You see him," she said. Not a question.
"I see him."
"Do you know who he is?"
"No." He filed this as a gap in his information and moved on. "We're third in the running order. We should begin final preparation."
The performance was the best they had produced in a public setting.
This was, in retrospect, both predictable and not — predictable because two weeks of intensive rehearsal had built a level of integration between his playing and her movement that exceeded anything they had managed in the early sessions; not predictable because there was a quality to the performance that emerged only when the context matched a certain threshold of significance, a quality that could not be produced in rehearsal and that he had no adequate word for, except that it had something to do with the specific kind of attention a performance draws when it is genuinely happening rather than being practiced.
The preliminary round audience was the best audience he had played for since his mother's concert five years ago. Not because they were sophisticated — though they were — but because they were present, genuinely present, the kind of present that requires something real to be present in response to.
They gave them something real.
The Cadence resonance through the final passage of the third movement reached a level that had not appeared in any previous performance, even the cathedral rehearsals — a full, directed warmth that filled the house from the Aetheris outward, reaching the back of the gallery in a way that drew a small sound from several audience members, the involuntary response of people who have felt something physically and have not expected it. The resonance scoring display at the examiner's table registered something in the upper tier. He noted this in his peripheral awareness and did not let it change anything about the final phrase.
The last note ended.
The silence was slightly longer than at Ashwick.
The applause was considerably more substantial.
In the wings, waiting for the other acts to perform and the preliminary scores to be announced, Caelum appeared beside Valerius with the efficiency of a man who has been tracking his position for twenty minutes.
"The man in the gallery," Caelum said, without preamble. "Aldric Vorne. He's the new head of the Inquisitor's office. Appointed last month from the Southern Academy."
"Why is the head of the Inquisitor's office attending a Festival preliminary?"
Caleum was quiet for a moment that had a specific texture — the careful pause of someone selecting words with unusual attention. "Official reason: oversight of the Academy's cultural programming falls partially within his jurisdiction. Unofficial reason—" He stopped. "I don't have complete information on the unofficial reason. I'm looking into it."
"He was watching Aurelia."
"I noticed."
Valerius looked at him. "Caelum."
"I don't have complete information," Caelum said again, and the repetition of it had the quality of a statement that was true and was also a boundary. He was telling Valerius that he knew something and was not ready to share it, which in twenty-one years of friendship had happened precisely twice, both times about significant things.
Valerius received this. He did not push.
The preliminary scores were announced. They led their group by a margin that made the paired Resonance Singers look briefly at each other with the expressions of people revising their expectations. Semi-final qualification: confirmed.
He found Lysandra afterward, in the small waiting area near the venue's exit, standing with her coat on and her hair caught back, looking entirely calm in the way she looked calm when something had cost her something and she had decided not to let it be visible. He had learned this look over three weeks of paying the kind of attention that resulted in learning such things.
He stood beside her. "The score."
"I saw it."
"It's sufficient for the semi-final."
"Yes."
He was quiet for a moment. Around them, the venue was emptying, the post-performance circulation of performers and their supporters creating a current of movement that flowed around the still point they occupied.
"The man in the gallery," he said. "Aldric Vorne. Do you know who he is?"
She was very still.
"Yes," she said, at last, with a care in her voice that he had not heard before — not in this particular configuration, not with this quality.
"Is he relevant to you? Specifically?"
The pause before her answer was longer than her usual pauses. "The Inquisitor's office has a long history of interest in certain kinds of traditional magical practice." Her voice was level. "As a performer working in an older tradition, I'm aware that some of what I do falls within the scope of practices they've historically monitored."
He listened to the structure of this — the way it was shaped to provide information without disclosure, the careful selection of words that were individually accurate and collectively insufficient. He had heard this structure from her before, in small ways, but not with this precision. Something had sharpened in her calibration.
"Monitored," he said.
"It's the accurate word."
"What would happen if he identified your practice specifically?"
She looked at him then, finally, with the expression that he could only describe as the look she wore when she was deciding how much of a true thing to give him. "It would complicate things," she said. "Significantly."
He looked at her for a long moment. Then he nodded. Not acceptance — acknowledgment. The specific nod of a person who has heard something incomplete and has decided to hold the incompleteness rather than force the completion.
"After the semi-final," he said. "Whatever you can tell me — tell me then."
She looked at him with the expression he did not have a name for and had stopped trying to name.
"All right," she said.
Caleum joined them at the exit, and the three of them went out into the cold Frostmonth air, and Valerius walked back through Oakhaven with the score and the name Aldric Vorne and the shape of things he did not yet know turning over in his mind like phrases that had not yet found their resolution.
