The semi-final venue was the Resonance Hall.
This was the largest performance space in Oakhaven outside the Royal Academy's main auditorium — a purpose-built hall on the Promenade, designed in the older architectural style with a genuine acoustic resonance chamber built into the ceiling, the kind of space that required a significant investment in structural engineering and had been worth every coin of it. Five hundred seats. A proper stage, elevated, with dedicated lighting positions. A Cadence scoring array that was calibrated at the beginning of each event by an Academy technician and that would produce, for tonight's performances, numerical resonance output values accurate to the second decimal place.
Valerius had performed in this hall three times before. Each time with his mother present. Each time with a specific weight of expectation attached to the evening that had required more energy to manage than the performance itself.
He stood in the backstage corridor outside the main dressing rooms and processed the particular quality of being in this building again — the smell of it, old stone and Cadence lantern oil and the wood of the stage floor, which he could not smell from here but which he knew, precisely, from the three previous times he had stood in this specific space. The smell of expectation, which had always been present here and which tonight had a different character than before.
Before, the expectation had been other people's.
Tonight — for the first time in years, possibly the first time since the lesson at eight years old when his mother had asked him what the third bar felt like — the expectation was his own.
He wanted to perform well. Not for the scoring. Not for the semi-final advancement. He wanted to perform well because the thing he and Lysandra had built over four weeks deserved to be performed well, and because he had not wanted something in a long time and the wanting felt like something he should not waste.
She arrived twelve minutes before they were called to stage.
He had been in the backstage corridor for forty minutes. He had not thought this was obvious until she came in and said, without looking at him: "You've been here for a while."
"The acoustics are complex. I needed time to work through them."
"I know." She set her bag down and began her compact pre-performance sequence — the same series of movements she did in every warm-up, the body checking itself against its own knowledge of what was required. She moved through it quickly, efficiently, with the particular quality of someone who has very little time and has made peace with having very little time. Her left knee, he had noticed, was getting better later in the day than early. She started slowly, the movement building to its full range over the sequence's duration rather than being present from the beginning.
He noted this and did not say anything.
They did not speak much in the remaining twelve minutes. He tuned. She moved. The backstage sounds of the other acts filtered through — voices, instrument cases, the particular anxiety-adjacent noise of a field of performers waiting. At some point Caelum appeared briefly in the corridor, confirmed the running order, confirmed their position, confirmed a detail about the scoring array, and left. This was Caelum at his most useful: appearing with necessary information and disappearing without requiring management.
At five minutes to their call, the corridor was quiet.
Valerius became aware, in the specific way that performance preparation makes things more present rather than less, of the sounds of the hall beyond the stage door — five hundred people assembling, the murmur of them, the particular low frequency of anticipation that a full house produces. He had not stood backstage in a full house in five months. He had not stood backstage in a full house without his mother, somewhere in that audience or in this corridor, in more years than five.
The thought of her arrived with the particular quality it had been arriving with recently — not the sudden grief of the early months, but something more complicated, more textured. He held it for a moment, the way a musician holds a difficult interval before resolving it, and then he set it to the side and looked at the stage door.
He became aware, gradually and then completely, that the thing he had been managing as controlled tension had shifted into something else.
The shift was quiet. Internal. He was standing in the corridor with the Aetheris in his hand and he was preparing for a performance that mattered and the preparation was being done correctly and his hands were correct and his breathing was correct and then, beneath all of that correctness, a door opened that he had not opened and Seraphine Vance was on the other side of it, specifically the version of Seraphine Vance that existed in the G string of the Aetheris, in the third bar of the first piece she had ever taught him, in the specific silence that had existed between the last note he had ever played for her and the sound of the door at the Vance Estate opening to admit the physician he had called too late.
The bow was in his hand. He was aware of this from a distance.
His hands were not performing their function.
He was aware of this also. He was aware of both of these things from the specific distance that panic produces — the sensation of being present in the body and simultaneously unable to operate it, like a musician who can hear the music perfectly and cannot find the strings.
The stage call came. He did not move.
From the corner of whatever awareness remained operational: her movement. Not toward him — beside him, into the space where she had been standing, the stage door opening in front of them, the lights of the stage beyond it. She moved and he moved with her because the alternative was standing still, and standing still in front of a stage door with five hundred people on the other side is not one of the available options.
They were on stage.
The lights were what he expected them to be. The audience was what he expected. He could feel none of this.
The Aetheris was in his hand. The bow was in his other hand. He set them together in the way he had set them together ten thousand times, which the body knew how to do without the mind's participation, and he waited for the music to be there.
It was not there.
Three seconds. Four. The beginning of whatever the audience was about to decide about the delay.
Her hand came against his sternum.
Not a gesture — a placement. The flat of her left palm, pressed against the center of his chest through the silk of his shirt, the contact certain and specific and slightly too much pressure to be accidental, the same quality as a piano key struck fortissimo rather than mezzo-forte. She was still looking out at the audience. Her right arm was in the first position of the first movement. Her left hand was on his heart.
He felt it.
Not the warmth only — the rhythm. She was keeping a rhythm against his sternum with the faintest possible variation in pressure, a metronome made of flesh and intent, the tempo of the first movement. Not the tempo of her heartbeat, which was different from this, faster and more personal. The tempo of the music. She was giving him the structure of the thing they were supposed to be doing, delivered through the most direct physical channel available.
He played.
The first note that came out of the Aetheris was rough in a way he had not produced in weeks — rough like early sessions, the rust and reluctance of a mechanism that has been asked to start under difficult conditions. He felt it and corrected before the next note. The correction was incomplete. The next correction was better. The hand against his sternum did not move until the third movement began and she needed both arms, and by then he had found the floor under his feet and the hall around him and the music that was available to him in this room with this person and the specific audience they were playing for.
The third movement arrived. She moved away. The space she left was cold for approximately four bars.
Then the music arrived fully and the cold was not relevant.
What happened in the third movement of their semi-final performance at the Resonance Hall was the best thing Valerius Alistair Vance had produced in five years of being considered one of the finest Spell-Violinists in Aethelgard. He was not aware of this while it was happening. He was aware of the music — the specific, irreplaceable quality of music that is going somewhere true, that has found its way past the architecture of technique and performance and expectation into the raw material that all of those things are supposed to be in service of. He was aware of her movement in front of him, the crimson sweep of her skirt in the lights, the flowers in her hair catching the glow of the Cadence output that built around them in the last passage to a level that was audible as well as visible — a warmth in the air, a quality of resonance that the five hundred people in the hall felt physically, that the scoring array would later register at a level not seen in the Festival selection in eleven years.
The last note.
The silence.
Then the sound of five hundred people responding at once.
Backstage. The corridor that had been so difficult to stand in. He stood in it now and looked at the wall and breathed.
She was beside him. He looked at her hand — the hand that had been on his sternum, now at her side, unremarkable, a dancer's hand with a dancer's calluses. She was looking at the wall.
He became aware that he was going to say something before he knew what it was.
"Don't," she said, quietly. Not unkindly.
He looked at her.
"Not now," she said. "Not here." She was looking at the wall, not at him, with the particular quality of someone who is managing something that has become significant. "What happened — it doesn't need to be named right now. We played well. That's what's true right now."
He was quiet for a long moment. Then he nodded.
Caleum arrived with the score. The highest in the semi-final field, by enough that the margin was not close. Final round qualification: confirmed.
Caleum looked at both of them and said: "I'll get the coats."
He was gone for exactly long enough.
Valerius stood in the backstage corridor of the Resonance Hall and did not name anything. He looked at the wall and breathed and let the music continue in his hands, which it did, as it had been doing for some weeks now, without asking his permission.
Beside him, very quietly, she pressed her own hand flat against her sternum.
He did not see this.
She did not intend him to.
