Caelum requested the meeting.
This was unusual. In the three weeks of their arrangement, communication had flowed from Lysandra to Caelum when she needed to update him on the plan's status or when something required his involvement. She had not received a message from him before — a short note delivered to the candle-maker's shop on Willowgate Street by one of his junior cavalrymen, requesting that she meet him at the Promenade bench, not urgently but soon.
Soon meant the following morning.
The bench was cold. She had dressed for it — the heavier layers, the thermal underlayer that she had stopped apologizing to herself for requiring. The morning was four degrees, clear, the canal moving in the slow way of water that is considering becoming something less liquid. Caelum arrived at the bench with the punctuality she had documented and two cups of tea, which she had not expected and which she accepted with the specific gratitude of someone who has been cold longer than is comfortable.
"He's noticing," Caelum said, without preamble.
"I know."
"Seventeen things, apparently. He used that number specifically."
She looked at the canal. The morning light was coming in low and white, the kind of light that makes everything very clear and very cold simultaneously. "He mentioned it to you."
"Last night. He asked if I had information that would contextualize the patterns he'd observed." Caelum looked at her profile. "I told him I didn't have information I was at liberty to share. He accepted that. But he knows something significant is being withheld, and he knows I know what it is."
"How much does that cost you? With him?"
Caleum was quiet for a moment. "Some," he said honestly. "Not as much as you might think. We've known each other long enough that he trusts my judgment about when withholding is justified. He's not happy about it. But he's not going to push." He paused. "Yet."
She absorbed the yet.
"You have three weeks," Caelum said. "To the Solstice. Roughly."
"Yes."
"Is the timeline still viable?"
She thought about the progression she had tracked that morning — the left knee requiring sixty-two minutes to reach full function, up from forty-five a week ago. The fingers on her left hand that were now consistently at the lower end of their mobility range until the warming tincture had been in her system for twenty minutes. The slight haze in her peripheral vision in cold temperatures that cleared when she was warm and active and was something she had not written down in the journal because writing it down would make it a data point and data points were things she had to respond to.
"It's viable," she said.
Caleum looked at her steadily. "Aurelia."
"It is. The movements are ready. The Aetheris is responding. He's at the level the Rite requires — actually past it, I think. The final is in three days and the Solstice is three weeks after that." She looked at the canal. "The timeline is viable."
He was quiet for a moment that had a particular quality — the quiet of a person who has heard something and is deciding whether to challenge it. "You're not the only thing in the timeline," he said at last. "He is too. And in three weeks, when the Rite is complete—"
"I know what happens in three weeks."
"I know you know. I'm asking if you've thought about what it means for him. Not the abstract version — the specific version. He will have played the most extraordinary performance of his life, with you, and then you will be gone. And he will know that you knew it was coming from the beginning."
She held the tea cup in both hands and felt the warmth of it and did not answer immediately.
"I've thought about it," she said, at last.
"And?"
"And I think," she said, carefully, "that the version of him who has his music back — who has played the Rite, who has been the instrument of something larger than himself — that person will survive what I can't protect him from. Better than the version of him who was in that grey house, not opening the case, would have survived anything." She paused. "I think I've given him something that will hold. I think the music will hold."
Caleum looked at her for a long time. "You believe that," he said. Not a question — an assessment.
"I have to," she said, which was honest in a way she had not intended, and she heard herself say it and did not retrieve it.
The silence between them was different from the comfortable silence of professional associates. It had the texture of something more significant — two people who had been building something together and were now sitting in the shadow of what they'd built.
"There's something else," Caelum said.
She looked at him.
"Aldric Vorne. He's been making inquiries through the Academy's administrative channels. Not official investigation — not yet. Informal questions about the provenance of certain performance styles in the Festival field. The kind of questions that are technically about cataloguing tradition and are actually about identifying practitioners."
She set the tea cup down.
"He hasn't identified you specifically," Caelum continued. "But he's moving in your direction. The semi-final put you in a more visible position. If he was at the gallery watching before, he'll be at the final watching more carefully." He looked at her with the directness of a man who needs her to understand the full dimension of what he's telling her. "Three weeks is tight if he's moving."
"Does Valerius know about the Inquisitor's connection to—"
"To his mother? No." Caelum's voice was careful. "There's a document in the restricted stacks. He found it. He didn't tell me about it directly, but I know he went to the restricted stacks and I know what's in the collection he accessed." He paused. "He knows his mother's initials are on something connected to the Moon-Laurel tribe. He doesn't know what she authorized."
Lysandra looked at the canal. The water was moving slowly, carrying the thin film of morning frost from the banks. She thought about the authorization stamp — the suppression of the Moon-Laurel rites, the investigation that had driven her tribe further into hiding in the years before the curse had finished what the Inquisition had started. She thought about the man with the ash-grey hair and the deep-water eyes who had spent four weeks playing music with her and did not know that the woman who had shaped everything he was had a name on a document that had shaped everything she was.
"It doesn't change anything," she said.
"It might change things for him."
"I know. But not before the Rite." She was quiet for a moment. "After — when he reads the journal — he'll find that page too. He'll understand."
"You're giving him a lot to understand after the fact."
"I'm giving him everything I know how to give him," she said, with a quietness that was not anger but was something adjacent to it — the quietness of a person who has made the best decision available to them and is tired of examining its costs. "The journal has everything. The real name. The real tribe. The real reason I came to Oakhaven. The real reason for the lie about Caelum. Everything."
He looked at her for a long moment.
"The real reason for the lie about me," he said. "Does that include what you haven't been writing in the journal?"
She looked at the canal.
"I don't know what you mean," she said, carefully.
"Yes you do."
She was quiet for long enough that the canal boat passed and the sound of it faded and the morning settled back into its cold stillness.
"No," she said, at last. "That's not in the journal."
"Maybe it should be."
"Maybe it shouldn't." She stood, which was her signal for ending things, and wrapped her coat tighter against the cold. "If he knows — if he reads it and knows — then he has something to grieve twice. His mother's illness and then mine. I won't do that to him." She looked at Caelum. "What I gave him was the music. That's real. That's enough. The rest is—"
She stopped.
"The rest is what?" Caelum asked, quietly.
She shook her head, with a small motion that was the closing of a subject rather than the dismissal of it. "Watch out for the Inquisitor," she said. "And watch out for him. After."
"I've been doing both," Caelum said. "For a while now."
She nodded. She walked back toward Willowgate Street in the cold morning light, and she did not allow herself to think about the rehearsal that evening, or the specific quality of sitting on the nave floor with the cathedral light moving around them, or the particular sound that the Aetheris had made last night when she had danced the third movement and he had played something that was not in the structure of any choreography she had created.
She did not allow herself to think about what the Aetheris was learning.
She thought about it the entire way home.
