Three days before the final, the intensive schedule reached its peak and then, by necessity, eased.
This was the counterintuitive logic of preparation that Valerius had absorbed over years of performance training: the week before a major performance was not the week for maximum effort. It was the week for consolidation, for allowing the body to absorb what the preceding weeks had built, for coming to the performance rested rather than depleted. He and Lysandra had discussed this and arrived at a shared protocol — one full run in the morning, followed by targeted work on specific passages, followed by rest. No evening sessions in the final two days.
The rest, he had discovered, was harder than the preparation.
Not because the music wasn't there — it was there, more consistently than it had been in years, available in a way that suggested it had settled back into place rather than being maintained through effort. The rest was harder because the preparation had structured his days around the cathedral and the rehearsals and the particular quality of being in the same space as someone he had been thinking about constantly, and the rest removed the structure while leaving the thinking.
The final full run of the week was on the Tuesday morning, two days before the performance.
They ran it once, cleanly, with a quality of ease that the preceding weeks had been building toward — not effortless, because nothing genuinely demanding is effortless, but assured. The magic through the third movement arrived with the full warmth they had been producing since the semi-final, the flowers opening across the cathedral floor in the particular pattern that had become familiar: first the courtyard's central pavers, then spreading outward in a slow bloom that faded even as it spread, the brief field of white and silver that lasted exactly as long as the peak resonance and disappeared when it passed.
When they finished, neither of them moved immediately.
This was their practice after the full runs — a stillness that had become a ritual without being decided on, a period of being in what had just happened before discussing or analyzing it. He had come to value it for the specific quality of rest it provided, which was different from the rest of not playing.
After a while, she sat down. Not against the wall — on the courtyard paving, in the center of where the flowers had been, cross-legged, her skirt spreading around her in the crimson pooling way it did when she sat on the ground. He sat on the bench, the Aetheris across his knees, watching the last of the frost on the distant pavers melt in the thin morning sunlight.
They had been quiet for perhaps ten minutes when he asked.
He had not decided to ask. The question arrived, as things arrived with him lately, ahead of the decision to allow them.
"Where did you train?" he said. "Before Oakhaven. Who taught you the Weave-Dancing specifically."
She was quiet for a moment. The quality of her quiet was not the strategic pause he had catalogued — it was something else, a processing pause, the kind that indicates the question has gone somewhere real.
"People who are gone now," she said, at last.
The sentence was four words and contained, he heard, a weight that four words should not have been able to carry. He did not push further. He sat with it.
"Many people?" he asked, because this was not pushing — it was following the direction she had opened, gently, without pressure.
"Enough," she said. "More than enough, when I count them." A pause. "A whole world of people. It was a small world, but it was complete."
He looked at the last of the frost melting. A whole world of people. A small world, complete. He thought about the tribe records, the Moon-Laurel clan, the investigation that had ended in suppression. He thought about the Rite whose name he had read half of. He thought about the Winter Solstice and the instrument required.
"I'm sorry," he said.
She was quiet for a moment that was not a deflection. "You don't need to apologize for things that aren't your fault."
"I know. I'm sorry anyway."
She looked at him. The expression on her face was one of the ones he had no name for — the one that appeared in the windows between her performed faces, quieter and more considered. It had something in it that he had been observing for several weeks without correctly identifying, which was the expression of someone who is holding something they have decided not to give and is beginning to find the decision costly.
"Your mother," she said. The shift was sudden, more personal than her usual deflections — not evasive, the opposite of evasive. "What was she like? As a teacher."
He was surprised. Not at the question itself — she had been gradually more willing to ask direct questions over the past weeks, the careful information-gathering disguised as conversation becoming something less disguised. The surprise was at the specific angle of it. Not what was she like as a person. As a teacher.
"Exacting," he said. "The standard she held was — it was not something most people experience. It wasn't cruelty. It was a refusal to accept less than the full capacity of what she believed I could do." He paused. "The difference between those two things, when you're eight years old, is not always apparent."
She waited. He felt the quality of her waiting — attentive, unrushed, genuinely open to what he was going to give her rather than waiting for her own turn to speak.
"She never said she was proud of me," he said, and heard the sentence arrive in the air between them with the particular weight of things that have been held for a long time and then set down. "In twenty-one years. Not once, in those words. She said other things — things that I understand now, that I'm not sure I understood then, were meant as that. But she didn't say it."
Lysandra was very still.
"I used to think," he said, "that the music was what mattered to her and I was the instrument of it. The vessel. That the love was for the Cadence work rather than for the person doing it." He looked at his hands. "I don't think that anymore. I think she had a version of love that didn't know how to speak in the languages most people use. I think I spent twenty-one years learning to speak in her version and forgot that other versions existed."
The words had not been planned. They had arrived with the particular quality of things that have been understood privately and are being expressed for the first time, which was, he was aware, a form of trust he did not usually extend without significant time and context. The time was five weeks. The context was four hundred hours of music.
Maybe that was sufficient.
"I think," Lysandra said, very quietly, looking at the paving rather than at him, "that you're right. About the version of love."
He looked at her.
"I think she knew exactly how much you could do," she said, "and I think that knowledge — the fullness of it, seeing someone's real capacity clearly — is its own kind of love. A difficult kind. One that asks too much and explains itself badly and doesn't know how to be gentle. But real." She was still looking at the paving. "I think she was proud of you. I think she just didn't know how to survive saying it."
He looked at her for a long time.
The courtyard was quiet around them, the moon-laurel blossoms making their dry, silver sound above, the Frostmonth air cold and still. The morning light had moved during their conversation, the thin sunlight shifting as it does in winter, more horizontal now, the shadows longer.
He had not thought, in four months of grief and five months of before, that he would be sitting in an abandoned cathedral with a girl he had known for five weeks who had just said the truest thing anyone had said to him about his mother, and that the truest thing would be a defense.
"She would have liked to hear you play," he said, eventually. Not because it was the right response — there was no right response to what she had given him. Because it was true.
She looked up at him, finally, and the expression on her face was the real one fully present, not glimpsed in a window but open, available, the complicated living thing that it was when she was not managing it. It lasted for a moment — the length of a breath, the length of a bar — before she collected it back into the face she wore for the world.
But he had seen it.
"The final is in two days," she said, with the particular steadiness of someone returning to solid ground.
"Yes."
"We're ready."
"Yes," he said again. And then, because she had given him the defense and it was the least he could offer in return: "Thank you. For what you said about her."
She looked at the moon-laurel tree. "It wasn't hard to say. It was just — obvious. From the outside."
"It's not obvious from the inside."
"No," she agreed. "It never is."
They remained in the courtyard for another half-hour without rehearsing, which was also, he had come to understand, a kind of work — the kind that didn't show in the resonance scoring and wasn't in the beat of any movement and had no technical name but without which none of the rest would have been possible.
When he left, she watched him go with the expression she wore when she was not watching him, which was different from all the ones she wore when she was.
