He had been awake since the third hour.
Not from grief. Not from the performance anxiety that had populated his sleep in the weeks before the competition. From something else — the particular wakefulness of a person whose mind has arrived somewhere and is not finished with the arrival, who is turning something over not to find an answer but because the turning itself is necessary.
At the fifth hour he gave up on the pretense of sleep and went to the kitchen. Made tea. Stood at the window. The canal below was blue-black in the pre-dawn dark, moving slowly, carrying the reflected light of the overnight lanterns in long, broken lines. He watched it with the attention he gave things when he was using them as a container for thinking about something else.
He was thinking about her.
This was not new information. He had been thinking about her with significant frequency for several weeks. What was new was the quality of the thinking — no longer the analytical distance of a musician examining a problem, no longer the careful containment of someone who is processing an inconvenient feeling by giving it a different name. He was thinking about her the way you think about a piece of music that has moved in and will not leave: not because you decided to keep it, but because keeping it is no longer something you're choosing.
He got dressed. He walked.
The Academy was open at the eighth hour. He had no appointment, no class, no official reason to be there, which had been true for several months and had never previously seemed like a reason not to go. He walked through the familiar corridors and found himself, without particular intention, at the bulletin board near the main entrance where the Festival announcements had been posted.
The Grand Final results were posted. Their names. The score. A brief official notation: *Aetheris performance of exceptional merit, resonance output at historic Festival levels.*
Below the results board, slightly to the left, was the announcement he had read three weeks ago when it had been newly posted: the Winter Solstice Grand Final, Solitude Cathedral.
The Winter Solstice was three weeks away.
He stood at the bulletin board and looked at this date and thought about the document in the restricted stacks — the one with the torn last page, with his mother's initials, with the incomplete record of an investigation into a tribe whose tradition he was now performing nightly. He thought about the Rite of Lustration, whose name he had read half of. He thought about the specific weight of things he did not know and the increasing likelihood that what he did not know was significant.
He thought about her hands.
Elowen found him at the bulletin board, which was where she apparently always found him when she needed to, a consistency that he had come to accept as one of the fundamental properties of the universe.
"She brought him the tinctures in a smaller case today," Elowen said, which was not how she usually opened conversations. She was looking at the announcement board, not at him.
He looked at her. "What?"
"Aurelia. She had a new case for the tinctures this morning. Smaller than before. More portable." Elowen was still looking at the board. "People use smaller cases when they've simplified a protocol. When there are fewer components. When—" She paused. "When they've made decisions about what they still need."
The quality of this sentence landed in a specific location — the one where the seventeen items lived, where the things he did not have names for lived, where the piece of glass from the night of the competition lived in his coat pocket because he had not yet given it to Elowen.
"I have something for you," he said.
He reached into his coat pocket and produced the glass shard — the fragment that had fallen from her sleeve at the competition, that he had picked up from the courtyard floor without deciding to and had been carrying since without examining why.
Elowen took it carefully. She held it to the light. She was very still for a moment.
"Where did this come from?" she asked, with the specific quality of calm that belonged to people who are receiving difficult information and are managing their response to it.
"It fell from her sleeve. At the competition. Two nights ago."
Elowen looked at the shard for a long time. She turned it. The light through its facets threw small bright points across her palm. "Valerius," she said, and stopped.
"Tell me what it is."
She closed her hand around it. She turned to look at him finally, and her expression was the one she wore when she had reached a conclusion she did not want to have reached. "I need to run some tests first. I need to look at some references in the apothecary archive." She paused. "I'll come to you when I have something certain to say."
"How long?"
"A day. Perhaps two."
He looked at her. "Elowen."
"I'm not going to tell you a hypothesis," she said, with a gentleness that was also firmness. "I'm going to tell you what I know. I'll tell you as soon as I know it."
He accepted this.
In the afternoon, after Elowen had gone to her work and he had done the things that needed doing without particular awareness of doing them, he went to the cathedral. There was no rehearsal scheduled. The competition was over. There was no structural reason to go to the cathedral.
She was there.
Of course she was there. She was always there in the afternoons, in the way the moon-laurel tree was always there — not because someone had decided it should be, but because it was where it had grown.
She looked up when he came through the gate. Not surprised. Not unsurprised. Simply present in the way she was present — fully, without reserve, in the specific immediate way of someone who does not save their attention for more important moments because they have decided all moments are equally important.
"No rehearsal today," she said.
"No," he agreed.
"And yet."
"And yet," he confirmed.
She moved slightly — making room in the space she occupied, which was the gesture she made when she was inviting rather than explicitly welcoming, the difference being that the invitation preserved his agency in a way the explicit welcome did not. He sat on the bench. She returned to the base of the moon-laurel tree. The afternoon light was long and cold through the cathedral's remaining windows, the shadows at their winter angles, everything slightly gold in the way of late Frostmonth afternoons.
He took out the notation paper he had brought without knowing he was bringing it and began to write. Not performance material — the piece. The one that had been writing itself since the evening at Caelum's dinner when the dark counter-melody had appeared beneath the portrait phrase. He had it now in something close to full form — twenty-four bars, perhaps twenty-six, with an internal structure that had arrived without him and was simply waiting to be written down.
She read. Or appeared to read — the book was open but her eyes were occasionally in the wrong direction for active reading, which he had catalogued and was no longer pretending not to notice.
They were in the same room, in the afternoon, being occupied with separate things, in the specific silence of people who are comfortable occupying the same space without constant mutual acknowledgment. He had been in this kind of silence with Caelum, over twenty-one years. He had not expected to find it with someone he had known for six weeks.
At some point he looked up from the notation and she was looking at him, and they looked at each other for a moment across the afternoon-lit nave, and then she looked back at her book and he looked back at his notation, and neither of them said anything about the looking, which was also a form of saying something.
When he stopped writing and looked at the pages, the piece was essentially complete. Twenty-six bars. A beginning, a middle, an ending that was not a resolution but a suspension — the last chord held rather than landed, asking rather than answering. He had not intended this. It was simply what the piece required.
He looked at what he had written for a long time.
The piece had a title now. It had not had a title before, had been existing as a phrase, a fragment, a series of musical events without a header. But looking at it complete, in the afternoon light, with the cathedral around him and the tree above the window and the sound of a page turning from the direction of the moon-laurel tree, it had a name.
He did not write it on the paper.
He knew it was there.
He folded the notation and put it in his coat pocket, beside the space where the glass shard had been, and looked at the window, and waited for the afternoon to finish being itself, which it did, slowly, in the amber and gold that had been the color of the world for some weeks now.
