The announcement was posted the morning after the Grand Final results.
Valerius saw it on his way to the cathedral — the Festival's official notice, white paper with the Royal seal, the formal language of competition administration wrapped around the specific information that the Winter Solstice Grand Final would be held at the Solitude Cathedral, outdoor performance, the format different from all preceding rounds: no scoring array, no judges' panel, no technical criteria. Audience response only. The magic and the emotion of the performance would speak for themselves.
He stood at the notice board longer than he needed to.
The Solitude Cathedral. The courtyard with the moon-laurel tree. The space where he had first seen her and had not known who she was or what she was beginning. The space that had been, for six weeks, the place where the most important work of his recent life had been done. The final would be held there.
He folded the announcement notice — he had taken it from the board, another minor violation of posting regulations that he would acknowledge if asked — and put it in his coat pocket and walked to the cathedral, where she was already in the courtyard, reading the same notice that had apparently been posted at multiple locations throughout the city because she had already seen it.
She was sitting on the bench beneath the moon-laurel tree's outer canopy, reading it with the same quality of attention he applied to everything that might contain information he needed. When she heard him come through the gate she looked up, and the expression on her face was something he could not categorize — complicated, and familiar, and slightly more personal than her usual expressions when he arrived.
"The cathedral," he said.
"Yes."
"You knew this was where the final was being held."
"I knew it was a possibility." She folded the notice and looked at the courtyard, at the moon-laurel tree in its late-Frostmonth fullness, silver-white and permanent. "I preferred it."
He sat on the other end of the bench. "Why?"
She was quiet for a moment that had the quality of genuine consideration rather than deflection. "Because the space should know what happens in it," she said, at last. "This space has been part of what we've built. It should be where we finish it."
He looked at the courtyard — the familiar stones, the familiar flowers dormant at their joints, the familiar smell of old magic and winter air. Where we finish it. He turned this phrase over and found that it had more weight than its surface suggested, and decided not to examine the weight.
"The outdoor acoustic will require adjustment," he said.
"I know. I've been thinking about the third movement's structure in open air."
"The resonance disperses differently without walls."
"Yes. I think we lean into that rather than compensate for it. Let it fill the space rather than contain it." She looked at him. "The audience will be in the courtyard. The tree above. The sky." A pause. "I think the Rite needs that."
He noted the word Rite — not performance, Rite — and filed it alongside the other things he was filing.
They rehearsed that morning with the final's specific requirements in mind: outdoor acoustic, open air, an audience that would occupy the courtyard itself rather than seated rows. The choreography required adjustment — she modified the third movement's spatial requirements to account for a performing area that extended further in all directions, the absence of stage edges, the specific relationship between performer and audience when there is no architectural separation between them.
He recalibrated the Aetheris's output, working with the instrument's natural resonance in cold open air rather than against it, finding the frequencies that would carry across the courtyard without the amplification of stone walls. The instrument was cooperative — more cooperative than it had been in the early sessions, responsive in a way that had been growing over the past weeks, the particular responsiveness of something that has made its decision.
At midday, during the rest break, Caelum arrived at the cathedral gate. Not for a meeting — his patrol route had apparently developed a new deviation that brought him past the Solitude Cathedral's outer path. He stood at the gate and looked at the courtyard and then at Valerius with the expression of a man who has been tracking something and has arrived at a conclusion he is not happy about.
"A moment," he said, to Valerius. Not to Lysandra, though she was present. She stood and moved toward the moon-laurel tree with the ease of someone who understands when conversations are not for her.
Caleum kept his voice low. "Vorne was outside the cathedral this morning. Before you arrived."
Valerius looked at him. "You're sure."
"I saw him from the Promenade. Standing at the outer gate, looking in." Caelum paused. "He didn't come in. He observed for approximately ten minutes and left." Another pause. "He's making a point of being visible. That's not the behavior of someone who's uncertain about what they're doing. It's the behavior of someone who wants you to know they're watching."
"For what purpose?"
"Pressure. He wants a response. He wants someone to do something that gives him grounds to act officially."
Valerius looked at the gate, as if Vorne might still be there. "He was watching her."
"He was watching both of you," Caelum said, carefully. "What he's connecting you to is her. If he can establish that you're knowingly involved in an unlicensed magical practice, the jurisdiction broadens. It's not just her he can move on."
This landed in the specific location where implications landed when they were about her specifically and were negative. Valerius looked at Caelum. "Tell me what to do."
"Nothing yet. Don't give him a reaction. Don't change the rehearsal schedule. Don't do anything that signals awareness of his surveillance." Caelum met his eyes. "I'm managing the official channels. I have enough seniority in the cavalry structure to slow any formal request he makes. But slowing isn't stopping."
"How long?"
"Until the Solstice, if I'm careful. After the Solstice—" Caelum stopped. Something in his expression shifted, briefly, into the complicated territory of someone who knows more than he is saying. "After the Solstice, the situation will be different."
Valerius looked at him. Caelum held his gaze with the steadiness of a man who has made a decision about information and is maintaining it.
"After the final," Valerius said, very quietly. "Tell me everything. After the final."
Caleum nodded. "After the final."
Caleum left. Lysandra returned from the tree with the ease of someone who has been within hearing range and has chosen not to indicate whether she has heard. Valerius looked at her.
"He was watching us," he said.
"I know." She met his eyes. "I knew he would be. The final makes it worth his investment of time."
"Why hasn't he moved? If he has the evidence—"
"Because moving officially requires a specific type of documentation he doesn't have yet. He has observations. He has a pattern. He doesn't have proof of the specific practice he needs to prohibit." She paused. "He would need to witness the Rite directly and formally to have grounds under the current statutes."
"And if he witnesses the final—"
"Then he'll have witnessed it when it's already complete," she said, with a quiet precision that suggested she had thought about this extensively. "There's a legal principle in Aethelgard's magical statute: a rite completed cannot be undone retroactively. He can prohibit future performance but he cannot nullify what has already happened."
Valerius looked at her. She said this with the specific knowledge of someone who has studied the relevant law. He filed this in the location for things he was assembling.
"Two weeks," he said. "After the final. You promised."
She looked at him for a moment with the expression he could not decode — the one that cost something. "Two weeks," she confirmed.
He nodded.
They rehearsed until the afternoon light was gone, adjusting the performance for the space that would hold its final version, and the courtyard around them held the work with the patience of a thing that has been waiting for exactly this, for longer than anyone currently living could remember.
