The Academy gazette's account of the Grand Final ran to four columns, which was more space than the Festival coverage had ever occupied in the gazette's history.
Lysandra read it sitting on the bench in the Solitude Cathedral courtyard, in the specific quality of late morning that followed significant events: the world continuing as it was, slightly too bright, slightly too ordinary, the gap between what had happened and what the morning looked like larger than usual.
The account was well-written, which she had not expected from an institutional publication. The writer had been present and had understood something about what they were present for. The phrases were good. She read them with the attention of someone who is looking for the exact words and finding, occasionally, the exact words.
One sentence in the third column: *Vance performs as though the music and the dancer are the same thing — not accompanied, not partnered, but continuous, a single working expressed through two instruments.*
She set the paper down on the bench beside her.
A single working expressed through two instruments.
The writer had not known, when they wrote this, that they were describing the Rite of Lustration more accurately than any Academy scholar had described it in the three generations since the Moon-Laurel tribe had been scattered. The Rite required two instruments because the magic it worked required two distinct sources — the Cadence manipulation of the Spell-Violinist and the Weave-Dancing of the practitioner — functioning not in parallel but in integration, each making the other possible in a way that neither could achieve alone.
A single working expressed through two instruments.
She looked at the moon-laurel tree. The blossoms were at their Frostmonth fullness, silver-white, moving in the small wind that came through the courtyard's broken walls. The Cadence lanterns placed by the Festival crew the previous evening had been retrieved, but their positioning had left slight impressions in the frost at the courtyard's perimeter — the ghost of last night's arrangement, visible in the morning's clarity.
The Rite was complete. She had felt it in the moment of completion — not a physical event, not a dramatic finale, but a quietness that arrived during the last phrase of the third movement, a settling, the specific sensation of something that has been held in trust for a long time being returned to its proper keeping. The Moon-Laurel tribe's Cadence lineage, held in her body since the last of her people had died, given back to the world through the Aetheris and the specific intention that had brought her to Oakhaven and the specific person who had made the giving possible.
Complete.
The celebration dinner that Caelum had organized for the evening was at a restaurant near the Academy quarter — larger than usual, a private room, the kind of gathering that required advance arrangements. She had known about it for two days and had spent those two days in the particular internal state of someone who has completed a significant task and is now standing on the other side of it, in the landscape that exists after the thing that organized all previous landscapes.
She arrived at the dinner at the correct time, which was slightly late but within the social tolerance that she had established early in Oakhaven as her personal metric. The private room was warm and well-lit, the table longer than Caelum's dining room, a larger circle of people: the four of them plus several Academy musicians from the Festival field who had been generous in their reception of the competition results, plus a patron whose investment in the Festival made her presence at celebrations semi-obligatory.
Valerius was at the far end of the table from her when she sat down, which was not by design — the seating arrangements had simply resolved that way — and she was glad of it for approximately ten minutes, after which she became aware that the table's length was not creating the distance it was supposed to create.
She was watching him, which she had always done and had never managed to stop doing, and she was aware across the dinner of the intervals at which he looked toward her end of the table. Not obviously — not the continuous attention of a person who is not bothering to manage the display. Precisely, at intervals, the way a musician checks a reference point during a long performance: not staring, just confirming. She counted, because counting was the habit she had developed for managing the things she was not supposed to be affected by.
Four minutes.
Approximately every four minutes, for the duration of the dinner, his eyes came to her from across the table. Not lingering. Confirming. The specific check of a person who needs to know where something is.
She ate. She participated in the conversations available to her. She performed the social brightness that was required, which tonight took more management than usual, because the Rite was complete and Vorne was moving and Caelum was going to tell him tomorrow and tonight was the last night in which the shape of everything was still the shape she had made it.
After the dinner, in the dispersal period, he found her before she reached the door.
"Tomorrow," he said, quietly, which was not a continuation of any conversation but the opening of one they had been not-having for two weeks.
"Tomorrow," she confirmed, with the quality of someone accepting a meeting they have been deferring.
"Not the two weeks you promised." He was looking at her with the specific attention he gave things he had decided to be direct about. "I know something is wrong. I've known for longer than I've admitted. I need to hear it from you."
She looked at him. The private room behind them was warm and bright, the sounds of the departing guests creating a context of normalcy that was both comforting and slightly surreal.
"Tonight," she said. Not tomorrow.
He looked at her. Something in his expression shifted — not surprise, something more careful. "Tonight."
"Meet me at the cathedral. Late. When the city is quiet." She held his gaze. "I'll tell you what I can tell you."
He nodded.
She moved toward the door. Behind her, she heard his footsteps not following, which was correct. She would go ahead. She would sit with the moon-laurel tree and the completed Rite and the cold winter night and figure out how to give him the truth in a shape that would not break him before she had left him with sufficient reason to continue.
At the door, Elowen was putting on her coat. She looked at Lysandra with the expression that had been changing over the past weeks — the expression of someone who had begun as a potential rival and had arrived at something more complicated and more generous than that.
"She's meeting me at the cathedral," Valerius said from behind them. Lysandra had not heard him approach. "Tonight."
Elowen looked at him. Then at Lysandra. Then back at him. Something resolved in her expression — a decision made, or a decision completed.
"I have something to show you first," Elowen said, to Valerius. "Before you go. The test results. You should know what you're walking into."
Lysandra was very still.
"I'll wait outside," she said.
She went through the door into the cold night air and stood in the street outside the restaurant with the crystal lanterns above and the canal nearby and the smell of the city in winter, and she pressed her hand flat against her sternum and felt her heartbeat, which was steady, which was present, which was hers.
She had planned for everything. She had planned for the Rite, for the timeline, for the lie, for the journal, for what came after. She had not, when she arrived in Oakhaven on a Frostmonth evening six weeks ago, planned to be standing in a street outside a restaurant where the person she had planned to leave gracefully was being given the truth she had been holding carefully for six weeks.
The door opened behind her. His footsteps on the stone.
He stood beside her in the street. She could feel the specific quality of what Elowen had told him without him speaking — it had changed the air around him in the way that significant information changes people before they know what to do with it.
"Valerius," she said.
"Come to the cathedral," he said. His voice was the one he used when he had decided something. Not cold — decided. "Tell me yourself. All of it."
She looked at him in the lamplight. His face was the one she had been watching for six weeks — the one that had been grey when she first saw it and was grey again now, but differently: not the grey of the empty world, the grey of a person who has received something hard and has not yet found the shape of it.
"All of it," she said.
She walked with him toward the cathedral, through the quiet streets of Oakhaven, under the crystal lanterns that made the city amber and gold, toward the space where everything had started and where, now, it would change.
