The corner Elowen chose was near the back of the restaurant's private room, away from the remaining guests, in the particular darkness between two candelabras where the light did not quite reach. She had selected it, he understood, for its acoustic privacy as much as its physical separation — the ambient noise of the gathering was sufficient to prevent their conversation from carrying to anyone who was not standing within three feet.
She placed the glass shard on the table between them.
In the context of a dinner table, with the warm candlelight and the sound of glasses and conversation around them, the shard looked wrong in the specific way that certain objects look wrong when they are placed outside their correct category. Not threatening. Simply incorrect. Like a surgical instrument at a banquet, or sheet music on a kitchen floor.
"I need you to look at it," Elowen said. Her voice had the register she used for professional consultations — not her social voice, not her personal voice, the voice that processed information and returned it without distortion. "Really look at it. Tell me what you see."
He looked.
The shard was approximately two centimeters at its longest dimension. The color was not entirely clear — it had a faint internal quality, a warmth that was not the candlelight's doing, something structural. The facets caught the flame and threw it outward in six directions with the precision of a cut gem rather than the irregular scatter of broken glass. The magical structure inside it was visible to anyone who knew what magical structures looked like in physical form — which, after twenty-one years of working with the Aetheris, he did.
"Crystal," he said. "Not glass — crystal. Magical structure internal, not applied. The faceting is natural, not manufactured." He paused. "It didn't come from a piece of jewelry. The crystalline matrix is biological in origin."
He heard himself say biological in origin and understood, from the specific quality of the silence that followed, that this understanding was the thing Elowen had been waiting for him to arrive at on his own.
"Yes," she said.
"Where did you determine it came from?"
"The magical signature is consistent with a condition documented in pre-Consolidation medical texts." She folded her hands on the table. "Glass-Heart Curse. It's one of the older magical afflictions — pre-dates most of our current medical taxonomy. The mechanism is a progressive crystallization of soft tissue, beginning at the extremities and moving inward. The crystallization is magical in nature rather than mineral — which is why it carries a resonance signature rather than simply being inert material."
He was aware of his own breathing — the specific deliberate quality of breathing that happens when the body needs to continue its functions while the mind is engaged elsewhere.
"Progressive," he said.
"Irreversible with current medical knowledge. The texts I found reference various management approaches — magic-infused water for internal maintenance, thermal regulation, avoidance of extreme cold. None of these arrest the progression. They slow it."
He thought about the flask she carried to every rehearsal. The layers. The morning stiffness localized to her left side, progressing outward. The warming tincture she used that he had observed but not identified as medical protocol. The seventeen items.
He had been building a list of the symptoms of her dying for three weeks and had not known that was what the list was.
"Timeline," he said. One word, because one word was sufficient.
Elowen looked at him with the expression she wore when she was delivering information she did not want to be delivering. She delivered it anyway, because she was Elowen Reed and she had decided that accurate information was the most respectful thing she could give him.
"Based on this shard — the texture, the size, the density of the magical matrix — I estimate the curse has been active for eighteen months at minimum. Possibly two years." She paused. "She's been managing it for that entire period. When she arrived in Oakhaven, she was already significantly into the progression."
She arrived knowing. The thought had the quality of something settling into a location that had been waiting for it — a piece of information that explained the shape of an empty space he had been navigating around for six weeks without identifying.
"Current timeline," he said. Still one register. Still processing.
"Cold accelerates the crystallization significantly. Frostmonth — the cold, the outdoor rehearsals, the outdoor final — has likely accelerated the progression by several weeks." She met his eyes. "My estimate, based on the current presentation: end of winter at the latest. Spring Equinox as an outside boundary."
Spring Equinox. Ten weeks. Eleven, possibly.
He looked at the table. The shard on its surface, catching the candlelight.
"Is there anything—"
"No." Gently. Precisely. "I've looked. I've been looking since I took the shard from you this morning. The medical literature I have access to is extensive and it's consistent: there is no reversal available. There is management. There is time, varying amounts of it. There is not a cure."
Elowen put her hand over his on the table. Brief, warm — the gesture of someone who loves him enough to give him terrible information and remain present for the receiving of it. Her hand was steady. He was grateful for its steadiness.
"She knew," he said. "When she came to Oakhaven."
"She knew."
"Everything she did — the lie, the arrangement with Caelum, the schedule, the—" He stopped. The architecture of it assembled itself in his mind with the precision of a musician following a complex score back to its source: every choice she had made had been made within the knowledge of this timeline. Every session. Every morning in the cathedral courtyard. The glass of magic-infused water she drank before every rehearsal. The careful management of her left side. The way she had never, in six weeks, mentioned anything that happened after the Winter Solstice.
"She did everything she did," Elowen said quietly, "knowing this was what she was doing it within. That's the information I wanted to make sure you had before you went to her."
He was quiet for a long moment.
"You knew," he said. Not accusation. Assessment.
"I suspected, from the first time I watched a rehearsal," she said. "The compensation patterns. The specific location of the stiffness. The way she managed herself differently in cold conditions." A pause. "I needed the shard to confirm. I confirmed it this morning."
"Why didn't you—"
"Because I had a hypothesis, not information. And because—" She stopped. Started again. "Because I was watching you. And watching her. And I thought that whatever was happening between you was — real. In a way that deserved to complete itself before I introduced the factor of its ending." Another pause. "I was wrong to wait this long. I want you to know I know that."
He looked at her. Elowen Reed, who had been patient with him for three years and had managed her feelings with a grace he had not earned and would never fully be able to repay, looking at him now with the expression of someone who is giving him something it costs her to give.
He understood, in this moment, the specific quality of her love for him — large enough to include the person he had chosen instead, large enough to sit here and give him the information he needed to go to her. He did not have words for this. He thought he might, eventually, but not tonight.
"Thank you," he said. The words were insufficient. He said them anyway.
She nodded. Took her hand back. Composed herself with the efficiency of someone who has decided something and followed through. "Go," she said. "She's waiting outside."
He stood.
He put the glass shard in his coat pocket, beside the space where it had been for two days.
He went through the door into the night where Lysandra was standing with her hand pressed flat against her sternum and the crystal lanterns above her and the whole long story of the past six weeks contained in the specific way she was holding herself in the cold.
"Come to the cathedral," he said. "Tell me yourself. All of it."
She looked at him in the lamplight with the amber eyes that had been the first thing he had noticed about her, in the moonlit courtyard on the night when he had not known he was beginning something.
"All of it," she said.
They walked toward the cathedral through the quiet streets of Oakhaven, and the city was amber and blue around them, and the cold was the cold of the longest season, and there was not very much time.
