He went to the cathedral.
This was the third morning after the night at the restaurant, after Elowen's diagnosis and Lysandra's disclosure and the long walk of the day before. He had spent those mornings doing the things he had committed to doing — the archive research, the initial conversation with the archivist, the beginning of the legal argument that Caelum was helping him structure. He had not gone to the cathedral. He had been waiting, without deciding he was waiting, for the right moment.
This was the right moment because he had run out of reasons to wait, which was also a way of arriving at a right moment.
She was at the moon-laurel tree.
Not rehearsing, not warming up. Sitting at the base of the trunk with her back against the bark and her hands in her lap, in the posture he recognized from the late sessions when exhaustion had been managed to its natural conclusion and the body had requested stillness. She was looking at the courtyard — at the stones, at the gate, at the winter sky above the cathedral's ruined towers.
He came through the gate and she heard him. He saw the awareness of his arrival cross her face before she turned to look — the specific shift of a person who has recognized a sound without needing to verify it visually.
He sat down on the courtyard paving, across from her, with the tree behind her and the open space of the courtyard between them. The way he had sat in Ch.18, the day she had said she was okay without being asked. The same geometry, the same gesture: coming into her space and being present without requiring anything of the presence.
They looked at each other.
"Your mother's name," he said. "In the document."
"I know."
"You knew before you came."
"I knew before I started researching Oakhaven. The Academy's involvement in the suppression was — not widely known, but findable if you were looking for it. I was looking for it." She held his gaze without flinching from it. "Seraphine Vance's name was in records I found two years ago, when I was trying to understand everything that had happened to my tribe and why."
"You came anyway."
"I came anyway."
"Why?" He asked it with the full honesty of someone who needed the complete answer, not the shortened version.
She was quiet for a moment — not the strategic pause, the genuine one, the kind that means the answer requires finding before it can be given. "Because your mother enforcing a law is not the same as you enforcing a law. Because whatever she did, she did in a context that existed before you, and the context shaped what happened but you didn't choose it." She paused. "And because when I read about you — about what happened after she died, about the music stopping — I saw someone who had been defined entirely by the expectations of someone who loved them imperfectly." She looked at him. "I know what that does to a person. I've watched it work from the inside."
He absorbed this.
"You were going to use me," he said. Not accusation. Fact-finding.
"I was going to use the Aetheris. That was the plan." She looked at the courtyard stones. "You came with the Aetheris. That part I planned."
"And the rest?"
A pause. "The rest I didn't plan for. Which you know, because you read the journal."
He had read the journal. He had been reading it in sections, returning to it, reading it the way he read a complex score — not to get through it, to understand it.
"The lie about Caelum," he said. "The entire construction of the fake pursuit. You maintained it for six weeks against someone who is — I am, apparently, not easy to maintain a lie against."
"No," she said, with a small quality in her voice that was not quite wry, not quite affectionate, something between. "You're not."
"Why did you keep it when it stopped being necessary? After Ashwick. After the semi-final. It wasn't serving the purpose it was designed to serve."
She was quiet for a long time. Long enough that he thought she wasn't going to answer. Then: "Because by that point I was maintaining it for a different reason. Not to keep you from carrying grief in advance. To keep myself from — " She stopped. Started again. "It was the only structure I had for being near you that didn't require me to acknowledge what being near you had become."
The specific weight of this landed precisely.
He looked at her. She was looking at the stones. In the morning light, the amber of her eyes was darker than in other lights — more complex, with the layered quality of something that has depth beyond its surface.
He said: "I'm not angry."
She looked at him.
"I want you to know that," he said. "I've checked. I understand why you did it. I understand the logic of it and I understand the cost of it. I'm — hurt. I'm not angry. Those aren't the same thing."
She was very still.
"What you built," he said, choosing his words with the precision he gave to things that mattered, "was real. However you built it, whatever the structure underneath — the music was real. What happened in this courtyard was real. The color coming back was real." He looked at her. "Real things don't stop being real because their context is complicated."
Something crossed her face. He had time to register it — the specific quality of someone receiving something they needed and had not expected to receive — and then it was gone, replaced by the expression he knew was coming, the one he had seen her deploy before when the truth was getting too close to the surface.
The managed expression. The performance of distance.
"The Rite is complete," she said, with a quality in her voice that was careful and flat in a way that was neither natural nor characteristic of her. "I've done what I came here to do. The mission is finished." She looked at the tree behind her, not at him. "You don't need to — you've given me what I needed. The Rite is in the world now. That's enough."
He watched her do it — watched the managed face come down, watched the specific performance of closure that was designed to give him an exit. He recognized it because he had catalogued seventeen items of her physical tells and the eighteenth was this: she went flat when she was most frightened. The brightness disappeared and the flatness arrived in its place, and the flatness said: nothing here, nothing to grieve, you can leave, it's fine.
"You're pushing me away," he said.
"I'm being clear about our situation."
"Those are different things and you know they are." He kept his voice even — not cold, not accusing. Steady. The same quality of steadiness he used when the bow arm had to hold through a difficult passage. "I know what you look like when you're being clear. This isn't that."
She stood up. The movement had the quality of someone creating physical distance to compensate for the insufficient emotional distance available to them.
"I have six weeks," she said. "Less, probably. I'm not going to spend them watching you manage knowing that." Her voice was controlled. It was very good. "You were the instrument the Rite required. I'll always be grateful for what you gave the music. What we made was extraordinary." A pause that had a specific quality — the pause of someone selecting the cruelest accurate statement available to them. "Thank you, Valerius."
Thank you.
He had heard that specific configuration before — the professional close, the gracious exit, the formal termination of an arrangement that was being relabeled as completed rather than ended. He had used it himself. He knew exactly what it was doing.
He looked at her — at Lysandra, who had arrived in a grey world and brought color back to it and was standing in the morning light of the cathedral courtyard using the precise mechanism of gratitude to build a wall between them.
He believed her.
Not because he didn't know what she was doing. Because she was doing it so completely, with her whole body, with everything she had, and sometimes the performance is so total that the body's knowledge of the performance being false isn't sufficient to override the performance's effect on the person receiving it.
He believed her in the moment.
He stood.
He walked through the gate.
He did not look back, because looking back would have required him to see her face in the moment after the performance closed, and he did not have the capacity for that this morning.
Behind him, the cathedral courtyard was very quiet.
The moon-laurel blossoms did not open.
