The grey house.
He had not called it that before — had not given it a name, because naming it would have been acknowledging something about it that he was not ready to acknowledge. But walking back through the streets of Oakhaven after the cathedral and coming through the door of the Vance Estate, he understood immediately and completely what the quality of the interior was. It was the specific grey of before. Not the same grey — before had been the grey of nothing, the grey of a world that had simply stopped having color because nothing was generating it. This was a different grey: the grey of color that has been present and is now absent, which is a considerably more specific and considerably more painful variety.
He knew this distinction because she had made it possible for him to know it.
He set the Aetheris case down in the hallway. He did not go to the practice room. He went to the kitchen and stood at the window and looked at the canal, which was — he registered this in the particular way of someone cataloguing what remains — still blue. Not the flat non-color of before. Blue, still. Whatever she had given back to the world's color was apparently not contingent on her being present in it.
He found this both comforting and insufficient.
The notation paper was still on the practice room desk with the title written on it. He went back and looked at it. He did not take the Aetheris out. The title was there in his own handwriting, which was a strange thing to see — the acknowledgment permanent now in the way that writing makes acknowledgments permanent, the title that had been true for weeks now visible as a fact rather than a private knowledge.
He sat at the desk and looked at it for a while.
Then he took a new sheet of paper and tried to write something. Not the piece — something else, some continuation of the analysis he had been building about the Vorne situation, the legal arguments, the archive reclassification. The work that needed to be done.
He wrote the date at the top of the page. He did not write anything else.
Caleum arrived at the seventh hour, which was the check-in time they had maintained through the bad months and which Caelum had apparently decided to maintain through this, which was a different kind of bad month. He knocked with the three-and-one knock. Valerius let him in.
Caleum came through the door and looked at him — the twenty-one year assessment, the rapid accurate reading — and sat down at the kitchen table without being invited because the kitchen table was the correct location for what was about to happen.
"She used the thank you," Valerius said.
Caleum was quiet for a moment. "I see."
"Professional close. Formal termination." Valerius sat across from him. "I believed it."
"In the moment."
"In the moment," he confirmed. "The moment lasted until I was two streets from the cathedral. Then I understood what I had been looking at." He looked at the table. "The understanding didn't change where I was. I was still two streets from the cathedral, in the wrong direction."
Caleum said nothing. He made the tea — rising without announcement and putting the kettle on with the practiced ease of someone who has made tea in this kitchen enough times to navigate it without looking. He brought two cups and sat back down.
Valerius wrapped his hands around the warmth of the cup.
"She's doing what she always does," he said, working through it. "When something matters enough that she can't perform indifference, she performs completion. She wraps it in a thank-you and hands it back." He looked at the cup. "I know she does this. I've watched her do it. I've identified it in myself, the same mechanism — I go cold, I use formal language. Hers is brightness and mine is coldness but the mechanism is identical."
"Yes," Caelum said. Not agreeing with an argument. Confirming something he had already known.
"She's afraid of what it costs me to watch her die," Valerius said. "So she's trying to end it before the worst of it happens. To protect me from the watching." He paused. "Which is exactly what she did at the beginning — she protected me from knowing she was dying so I wouldn't spend our time together managing knowing it." He looked at Caelum. "It's the same move. She only has one move."
Caleum looked at him over the rim of his cup. "Is that what it is? Only one move?"
Valerius thought about it. "She has a version of it where she moves toward," he said, slowly. "The lie about you was her version of moving toward — doing a necessary thing indirectly, at cost to herself, to get something real. Today was the retreat version." He paused. "She moves toward when she's managing a mission. She retreats when she's protecting someone she loves."
The word love was in the sentence before he had decided to put it there. He registered this without acting on the registration.
"Caelum," he said.
"Yes."
"She's dying." He said it directly — the specific directness of someone who has decided that the softened versions of hard facts are a form of disrespect to the facts. "I have read a journal she wrote for me specifically. I have heard her say that she needs to be chosen, not owed. And this morning she used the thank-you." He looked at his oldest friend. "Tell me what you see."
Caleum set his cup down. He looked at Valerius with the expression that appeared once every several years — the full-weight expression, the one he kept for when something required the total deployment of what he had.
"I see someone who is dying," he said, "who has spent six weeks in close proximity to a person she loves, and who has now decided that the kindest thing she can do is remove herself from that proximity before the proximity becomes unbearable." He held Valerius's eyes. "And I see the person she loves, who has spent six weeks learning a language this person speaks, and who has understood that language better than anyone in her life has ever understood it, looking at me and asking me to tell him what he already knows."
Valerius was quiet.
"She loves you," Caelum said, with the directness of someone who has decided the situation requires the direct version. "She has loved you since approximately the Ashwick Tavern, and possibly before. I watched it happen. I watched her turn away from rooms to manage the evidence of it." He paused. "She is using the thank-you because she is terrified — not of dying, she's made peace with dying, she planned for dying. She's terrified of you watching it. She thinks the watching will break you."
"She's wrong," Valerius said.
"I know she is. You know she is." Caelum picked up his cup. "The question is whether you're going to let her be wrong, or whether you're going to go back to the cathedral and tell her."
Valerius looked at the kitchen window. The canal below: blue. Still blue.
"She's going to do it again," he said. "If I go back. She'll do it again — a different version, better constructed, because she knows I saw through the first one."
"Probably."
"Until I make it clear that I've chosen to be there regardless of whether she keeps constructing exits."
"Yes."
"That might take more than once."
"She's a very good liar," Caelum said, with what was, under the circumstances, an impressive degree of equanimity. "You're very good at listening. I think you'll manage."
Valerius looked at him for a long time. Then he looked at the kitchen window, at the blue canal, at the city that was still in color because she had put the color back and it had stayed.
"Not tonight," he said. "She needs tonight. And I need to finish the Vorne business first — she shouldn't have to manage two fronts."
Caleum nodded.
"But soon," Valerius said.
"Soon," Caelum confirmed.
