The candle-maker's shop on Willowgate Street was closed by the seventh hour, the shutters drawn, the light behind them extinguished. Above it, in the room that had been her room since late Frostmonth, Lysandra Vespera sat in the dark.
She had not lit the candle. She had come home from the cathedral in the early afternoon and had not lit the candle, and the afternoon had become evening and the evening had deepened into the part of the night that is neither late nor early but simply present, and she had not lit the candle because the dark felt correct.
She had done what she had planned to do.
He had come to the cathedral — she had known he would, she had told the dark in Ch.37's parallel night that she knew he would come back, and she had been right. He had come and he had not been angry and he had said real things don't stop being real because their context is complicated, which was the most Valerius sentence he had ever said, precise and correct and arriving at exactly the wrong moment for her capacity to manage it.
She had deployed the thank-you.
She reviewed it in the dark with the clinical attention she brought to protocol assessments. It had been correct — the tone, the pacing, the specific quality of finality that made it function as a close rather than a pause. She had used the thank you before, in other situations, with other people, when it was necessary to end something that was tending toward continuation. It worked because it gave the other person a dignified exit — it did not reject them, it completed the arrangement. Most people accepted a completion more easily than a rejection.
He had left.
She sat in the dark and told herself this was success.
The telling took longer than it should have.
The problem was not the leaving — the leaving was correct, the leaving was what she had been building toward since the morning at the Promenade bench when she had explained the plan to Caelum and he had asked her what it cost and she had not had a complete answer. The leaving was right. The problem was the look on his face in the moment before he walked through the gate.
She had been watching for betrayal. She had prepared for anger — had a response to anger, had rehearsed the specific quality of measured calm that acknowledged anger without capitulating to it. She had not prepared for what she had actually seen: the face of someone who understood exactly what she was doing and was choosing, in the moment, to let it work anyway.
He had let her win the argument. Not because he believed her. Because he had decided, in that moment, that she needed to.
She pressed her palms flat on the writing table in the dark. The wood was familiar under her hands — the grain she had run her fingers over for six weeks while writing the journal entries that had been for the tribe and the entries that had become, increasingly, for him.
The journal was at the cathedral. She had left it two days ago, in the specific location where she knew he would find it — the place where Aetheris lived, where he would go when he was ready to go back. She had not told Caelum to give it to him. She had simply left it there, which was a form of trust she had not been entirely aware of extending until she did it.
She sat with the dark and thought about the things she had written in it.
The entry from the night of the real laugh: *I understand something I have been successfully not understanding for three weeks.* She had written it in Moon-Laurel script, with the feeling of writing something that would not be read. He had read it, in the common-script section she had written for him specifically, in her description of the evening at the reception.
The entry about his mother: *What she did was part of what destroyed my tribe. What she also did was make you. I don't know how to hold both of those things, so I hold them together.* She had written this one in the common-script section on purpose — she had wanted him to have that, the acknowledgment that she had come knowing and had chosen to come anyway, not as absolution for what Seraphine had done but as the true accounting of what had brought Lysandra to his door.
The last entry, written two nights ago: *I need to be chosen. Not owed.*
She had written that one in common script as well, knowing it was the most important thing she had to say and that she had not been able to say it to his face.
In the dark room, she opened the writing table's drawer and found a fresh sheet of paper. She did not light the candle — she wrote in the dark, in Moon-Laurel script that her hands knew without needing sight, the letters shaped by muscle memory and the long practice of a person who had been writing in a dying language since she was old enough to understand that language could die.
She wrote: *He came today and said real things don't stop being real because their context is complicated. This is true. I know it is true. I said thank you and he left and I am sitting in the dark knowing that he understood what I was doing and let it work and I don't know what to do with that.*
She paused. Wrote: *He's going to come back. I know this. He comes back. It is the thing he does — he returns, he persists, he listens until he hears what's underneath. I planned for him not to come back. I did not adequately plan for him to come back.*
She stopped writing. In the dark, she pressed one hand flat against her sternum and felt her heartbeat. Steady. Present. Still hers, for now — the weeks counting down from six in the way they had been counting since before she arrived in Oakhaven, since before she knew what arriving in Oakhaven would cost her in units that weren't time.
She wrote, finally, in the corner of the page: *I'm sorry. For the thank you. For all the times I chose the correct thing over the true thing. He deserved the true thing. I'm going to try to give it to him.*
She folded the paper. She did not know where to send it. She put it in the drawer.
In the dark room, she said to the air, which was also to him, wherever he was in the city that was their city now, the city she had been in long enough for it to be hers: "I know you're going to come back. I know I'm going to let you. I'm sorry it took me this long to stop trying to prevent it."
The candle-maker's shop was quiet below. The street outside was quiet. Somewhere in Oakhaven, in a house on a canal street, a man she loved was sitting with the evidence of all the things she had not been able to say to his face and reading them.
She hoped they were sufficient.
She thought they were. She had written them with everything she had, which was, she had learned, always sufficient when it was given honestly.
