He read it again that evening.
The full common-script section, from the first sentence — *If you're reading this, Caelum gave it to you, which means you didn't come back on your own, which means I was more convincing than I intended to be* — to the last. He read it the way he read music he was preparing to perform: not once for the surface of it, but repeatedly, returning to the sections that required more holding, letting the understanding build in layers rather than arriving all at once.
The first reading had been for the facts. What she had done, why, the full architecture of it. The second reading was for her — for the quality of the voice in the writing, which was different from her spoken voice in ways he had not expected. Her spoken voice was controlled, even in its most direct moments — the management always partially present, the calibration visible if you knew to look for it. The written voice had no calibration. It said things directly and then acknowledged that it had said them, and then occasionally said more.
He read: *The lie was the right thing. I still believe that. I am less certain that it was the only right thing — that nothing else was available — and more certain that it was the right thing for me, the thing I was capable of, the version of honesty I could manage within the limits of what frightened me. This is a smaller claim than the original one and I think it's the true one.*
He held this passage for a while. The distinction between the right thing and the right thing for me, acknowledged directly, without apology but also without self-defense. This was her at full honesty — not the performed honesty of saying difficult things in order to establish transparency, but the actual honesty of a person examining their own choices and reporting accurately on what they find.
He read the section about the Rite in the technical detail she had not given him verbally — the specific mechanics of the Cadence energy release, the way the lineage's accumulated magical signature had been held in her body since her tribe's end, the requirements for its release. He read this with the attention of a Spell-Violinist who had performed the Rite without fully understanding what he was performing, and found that he understood now, from the inside, what had been happening in the cathedral on the Winter Solstice: the warmth that had filled the Aetheris in the final passage had been the specific warmth of something being released, not generated — magic returning to the world through the channel they had built together, the instrument and the dancer, the two components without which the Rite was incomplete.
*The Aetheris is not merely a powerful instrument,* she had written. *It is the instrument of the Cadence tradition at its most fundamental — the original resonance, the frequency of the World Tree itself. The Moon-Laurel magic, stored over generations in the lineage, required that specific frequency to release cleanly. Any other instrument would have attempted the Rite and failed — the frequencies would not have matched, the release would have been partial, and the stored magic would have dissipated rather than returning. Your Aetheris is the only instrument in Aethelgard that carries the World Tree resonance. You are the only person who can access its full range. These facts are not coincidence. They are the reason I came to Oakhaven rather than anywhere else.*
He read the section about his mother with the particular attention of someone who has been thinking about the same thing for several days and is encountering another perspective on it.
*I want to be clear about what I mean when I say I came knowing and chose anyway. I don't mean that I forgive the authorization — I don't have enough information about the specific action to forgive or not forgive it, and even if I did, it wouldn't be mine to do. What I mean is that the person who signed that document and the person who made you are not separable, and that the thing she built in you — the listening, the precision, the capacity to play from the place where the music is its own justification — that thing is what the Rite required. And that thing is real, whatever it cost to make it.*
*I think she was trying to make something excellent and didn't know that excellence built from love and excellence built from fear produce the same outward result for a long time, and then diverge. I think the divergence happened the night she died. I think you've been living in that divergence.*
*I want to tell you: the excellence is yours. It was always yours. She shaped the conditions of it but she didn't create it. You created it, by being the person who did the work and felt the music and kept coming back to the instrument even when the instrument wouldn't answer. That's not her legacy. That's yours.*
He read this passage twice. Then a third time. He filed it in the location that was not the wrong location anymore — the one that had been waiting to receive this specific piece of information for a long time.
He read the section she had written about playing wrong on purpose: *I think loving something knowing you will lose it is the most fundamental version of playing wrong on purpose. You accept the deviation from what is safe and correct because the thing you're playing toward is worth the wrongness. I didn't know I was doing this when I decided to come to Oakhaven. I thought I was making a strategic choice. I understand now that I was playing toward something I hadn't yet seen, and that the something turned out to be you, and that I would make the same choice again.*
The last entry: he had read it before, but this time it arrived differently — not as information he was receiving for the first time, but as something he was reading in the context of everything that had preceded it. The please come back, implicit in the explicit I'll be at the cathedral. The acknowledgment that there was not much time and the time there is will not be easy. The specific ask: chosen, with full knowledge.
Full knowledge.
He had full knowledge. He had it now in a way he had not had it before — not just the facts but the shape of her, the specific quality of her intelligence and her fear and her love and her particular form of courage, which was the courage of someone who does the difficult thing while being fully aware that it is difficult, without pretending otherwise.
He closed the journal.
He had known what he was going to do since Caelum's kitchen, since the canal was still blue after the grey house had become grey again, since he had played the portrait piece through twice and the second time had been for her. He had been finishing the Vorne situation first — she had enough to manage, he was not going to add an unsettled external threat to the things she was managing — and the Vorne situation was essentially finished, the archive reclassification initiated and the legal argument documented and the conversation in the Inquisitor's office scheduled for the following morning.
Tomorrow he would close the Vorne situation.
Then he would go to the cathedral.
He took the Aetheris case and sat with it in the practice room — not playing, just the familiar weight of it, the case's worn lacquer under his hands, the sensation of the instrument's presence inside it. He had spent four months sitting in this room with the case closed and the music unreachable, in the grey house that had been simply grey.
He thought: she gave me color back. She gave me the music back. She gave me the place inside the music where the music is its own reason. She did all of this while she was dying, while managing a medical protocol every morning, while maintaining a lie she had decided was necessary, while writing in a journal she knew she was writing for a person who would read it after she had made it impossible for them to be in the same room.
He thought: she did this because she loved me, in the specific way she had available, which is indirect and misdirected and costs her more than she shows and is the realest thing I have ever been the recipient of.
He thought: I am going to go to the cathedral. I am going to sit across from her under the moon-laurel tree. I am going to tell her what I know and that I'm choosing it and that she does not get to use the thank-you again because I am not an arrangement to be completed, I am the person she chose, and being chosen goes both directions.
He put the journal in his coat pocket.
He went to bed.
In the morning he had one thing to do before the cathedral.
