The Academy archive opened at the eighth hour.
Valerius was there at the eighth hour and four minutes, which was close enough to opening to be intentional without being the person waiting at the door. The archivist — a woman in her late sixties named Maret, who had been managing the Academy's historical collections since before Valerius was born — looked up when he came in with the expression of someone who had been expecting him since their conversation three days prior.
"Mr. Vance," she said. "I've been reviewing the reclassification request."
"And?"
She folded her hands on the desk. Maret was one of those people in whom long experience with documents and the law had produced a particular quality of neutrality — not cold, but oriented entirely toward accuracy rather than toward the comfort of any person in particular. Valerius had always respected this about her. "The cultural preservation statute is clear. Materials originating from a tribal tradition default to the custody of the last surviving member of that tradition upon documented request. The Moon-Laurel inscriptions in our collection meet the criteria." She paused. "The rubbing that Inquisitor Vorne had made is a reproduction of a document that no longer legally falls within the Academy's archival jurisdiction as of this morning."
"When did the reclassification take effect?"
"At the sixth hour today, when I filed the paperwork." She looked at him over the rims of her reading glasses. "The rubbing is, at this point, a reproduction of a document he no longer has the right to reproduce. The original is the property of its rightful custodian."
"Who has been notified of this."
"A letter was sent to the Inquisitor's office at the sixth hour as well." She removed her glasses. "Mr. Vance. What you've done is entirely within the legal framework. I want to be clear that I supported this process because I believe the statute applies and because the Academy's historical relationship with pre-Consolidation tribal materials has been — imperfect, and this is a small correction to an imperfect record." She paused. "I also want to be clear that I expect you to handle the political dimension of this with some discretion. Vorne is new here and will not appreciate the maneuver."
"I understand," he said. "Thank you, Maret."
He went from the archive to the Inquisitor's office.
He had requested the meeting two days prior, through the proper administrative channels, which had the dual advantage of being unimpeachably correct procedure and of giving Vorne two days to research who Valerius Alistair Vance was, which Vorne had certainly done. The man who stood when Valerius entered his office had the expression of someone who has done the research and has arrived at a specific kind of professional respect that does not preclude the ongoing attempt to achieve his objective.
"Mr. Vance," Vorne said. "Please sit."
"Thank you." He sat with the ease of someone who has no reason to be uncomfortable. "I'll be brief. I have three points to make and then I'll leave you to your morning."
Vorne regarded him with the patient attention of a careful man. "By all means."
"First: the Moon-Laurel inscriptions in the Academy archive were reclassified this morning under the cultural preservation statute. The rubbing you had made is a reproduction of material no longer under Academy jurisdiction. The original archival record documents this reclassification as of the sixth hour today." He placed a copy of the reclassification notice on the desk. "Your primary documentation for a formal filing no longer carries the evidentiary weight it carried yesterday."
Vorne looked at the document. His expression did not change. "I see."
"Second: the performance at the Winter Solstice Festival was conducted under a Festival performance license, which provides blanket coverage for any magical working performed on a licensed stage during the licensed event period. The Solitude Cathedral was a licensed venue. The performance was a licensed act." He placed a second document — the license documentation — on the desk. "The specific statute you would invoke to pursue a formal action requires the working to be unlicensed. Our working was not unlicensed."
Vorne looked at the second document. He picked it up and read it with the thoroughness of a man who does not take other people's legal arguments on faith. A minute passed. He set it down.
"Third," Valerius said. "Miss Thorne is not well. You are aware of this. You have, I believe, medical intelligence that confirms her condition is significantly advanced." He met Vorne's eyes. "I'm asking you, as a professional courtesy between Academy colleagues, to direct your attention elsewhere. Whatever case you are building will not survive the legal challenges I have just described. Pursuing it will consume significant institutional resources and will not produce the outcome you're seeking." He paused. "And the person it would affect most directly does not have the time to spend being the subject of a legal proceeding."
The office was quiet. Through the window, the Academy's inner courtyard was visible — students crossing between buildings, the ordinary morning traffic of an institution that had been in continuous operation for three hundred years and would, regardless of what happened in this office, continue.
Vorne looked at him for a long time.
"You've done your research," he said.
"I usually do."
"The legal arguments are sound," Vorne said, which was the acknowledgment of a man who has the specific professional integrity to confirm a correct argument even when it defeats him. "The reclassification in particular is — elegant. I won't insult you by pretending otherwise."
"I'm not interested in elegance," Valerius said. "I'm interested in resolution."
Vorne was quiet for a moment. When he spoke again, his voice had a different quality — not the professional neutrality of the official meeting, something more direct. "The condition will resolve the matter in any case," he said, with the specific quietness of a man who has decided to be honest about something he would rather not be honest about. "Nature is not as slow as legal proceedings."
The specific quality of this sentence — the clinical acknowledgment of her dying as a strategic fact — produced a response in Valerius that was not anger, precisely, but was the specific form of coldness that arrives in place of anger when the anger would be insufficient to the situation.
"She has people," he said, with a quietness that matched Vorne's. "She is not dying alone and she is not dying unprotected. I want you to know that, since you've clearly been accounting for her in your planning."
Vorne looked at him for a moment that had something in it that might, in a different man in a different circumstance, have been recognition. Then he stood, which was the professional signal for meeting concluded.
"Good day, Mr. Vance," he said.
"Good day," Valerius said, and left.
In the corridor outside the Inquisitor's office, he stood for a moment in the ordinary Academic morning — the sounds of the institution, footsteps, a door closing, somewhere the sound of a student practicing something in a key that needed work. He breathed. He thought about the specific cruelty of a man willing to wait for death to do the work that the law wouldn't do for him. He thought about nature resolving the matter.
He thought: she has six weeks. I have given her those weeks. Vorne will not move in the time she has. That is what is available to give, and I have given it.
He walked out of the Academy into the Frostmonth air. The city was around him: the Promenade, the canal, the crystal lanterns waiting for evening. The Solitude Cathedral was to the south-west, accessible in fifteen minutes if he walked at pace.
He walked at pace.
He went through the outer gate of the Solitude Cathedral and into the courtyard and she was there — sitting at the base of the moon-laurel tree, in the same position as the day he had found her and said the wrong things and walked through the gate in the wrong direction.
She looked up when he came in.
He sat down across from her, in the familiar geometry of the position they had occupied many times, and said nothing, and the morning held them both in its cold clear light, and the silver blossoms above were the same blossoms that had always been above, and this was the beginning of the thing they were choosing.
