He went back on the third night.
This required no decision, precisely, because he had been very careful not to make one. He had simply found himself, at the ninth hour of the evening, wearing his coat and standing at the front door with no memory of having put it on. The body, as Seraphine had taught him, had its own logic that operated independently of the mind's supervision. He had spent twenty-one years applying this principle to music. It appeared to have other applications.
The night was cold and clear, the kind of cold that has a texture to it — a particular sharpness that arrives in Oakhaven in the deep weeks of Frostmonth and makes the crystal lanterns above the canals look more precise, more intentional, their light cut clean by the temperature into something almost geometric. He walked without hurrying. Caelum's house was behind him. The Academy was to the north. The market district was quiet at this hour, the stalls covered, the artisans gone home.
The road to the Solitude Cathedral was unpaved past the last proper cross-street, the cobblestones giving way to older stone, and then to a path that had been worn rather than built, shaped by years of feet that had thought this particular destination was worth the walking. Once, he knew, the cathedral had been the center of its own small district — a congregation, a community, a gathering point for the kind of faith that had required architecture this ambitious. That had been before his parents' time. The congregation had dispersed, the district had not rebuilt, and the cathedral had been left with its moon-laurel tree and its reputation for being haunted by the residual magic of old prayers.
He came through the outer gate — the iron one he had stood at three nights ago — and into the cathedral courtyard.
The moon-laurel tree was enormous.
He had known this, abstractly, having passed the exterior walls enough times to register scale. Standing beneath it was different. The canopy spread perhaps forty feet in every direction, the branches low and heavy with their silver blossoms, each flower the size of his palm and semi-luminescent in the way of plants that had absorbed centuries of ambient Cadence magic. The petals caught the moonlight and translated it into something warmer — a soft, diffused illumination that made the courtyard feel less like an exterior space and more like a room that had lost its roof.
The stone beneath the tree was old. The pavers were the original cathedral paving, uneven and grown over at the joints with moss that had the particular blue-green color of moss that has been magically influenced over a long period. In the summer, he suspected this courtyard would be remarkable. In Frostmonth, it was something stranger than remarkable. It was the kind of beautiful that makes you aware of how rarely you encounter the thing itself, as opposed to representations of it.
He stood at the courtyard's edge and let himself be in it for a moment.
Then she moved, and everything else stopped mattering.
She was beneath the tree — not in the center of the courtyard but close to the trunk, in a space where the branches were lower and the canopy denser, and she was dancing. Not the formal, structured movement he would have expected from any performer preparing for a Royal selection — not the architectural quality of Academy-trained technique. This was something older and less administered than that. The movement came from somewhere lower in the body, from the hips and the spine rather than the arms and hands, and it followed a logic that was not the logic of choreography as he understood it.
Every time her foot came down, flowers opened.
He had seen this at a distance, through the gate, and had noted it without quite believing it. Up close, there was no not-believing: the cracks between the pavers bloomed white and silver at each point of contact, small flowers opening completely in the second of her step and beginning to fade even as she lifted her foot to move on. A garden that lasted exactly as long as she was touching it. The loss was immediate and specific and somehow exactly as beautiful as the flowering.
He did not breathe.
What he felt — and he was aware of feeling it with a clarity that was entirely unwelcome, given the number of things he had been successfully not feeling for four months — was not simple. It was not admiration in any category he had prior experience with. It was something more structural than that, something that reminded him of the way certain chord progressions function: not as a sequence of pleasing sounds but as a mechanism that produces a state of anticipation in the listener, a building sense that the resolution is coming, that there is a note that must inevitably arrive and that its arrival will be, when it comes, both surprising and inevitable.
His hands were wrong.
He looked down at them. His left hand was positioned for an A chord — four fingers curved in the particular arrangement of a violinist in the middle of a phrase. He had not noticed them moving. He had not made them move. They had done it on their own, following some instruction that had arrived from somewhere below conscious thought, some part of him that had not gotten the message about not playing anymore.
He closed his hands. The chord disappeared.
She stopped.
Not because she heard him — he had made no sound, he was certain of it. She stopped for her own reasons, her own body's reasons, the way a phrase ends not because something interrupts it but because it has arrived at its natural conclusion. She stood with her back to him, one hand coming up to rest briefly against her sternum — just below her collarbone, a small, private gesture, there and gone quickly. Her breathing was audible in the silence: slightly rapid, slightly controlled, the breathing of someone who is managing something.
He had the specific, unwelcome sensation of having witnessed something he had not been meant to see.
She turned.
Her eyes found him immediately — amber, he noted, the color clarifying even in the dim light, a warm gold-brown that caught the moon-laurel glow in a way that made them look briefly lit from within. She was not surprised. She looked at him the way a person looks at something they have already accounted for, which was disorienting, given that she could not have known he was there.
The silence stretched for what felt like a full measure.
He became aware, gradually, of the fact that the courtyard was in color. All of it — the silver-white of the moon-laurel blossoms, the deep green of the moss, the warm gold-orange of the lantern-light she seemed to carry in her clothes and her hair — was color, actual color, in a way that his immediate environment had not been for four months. He did not examine this. He filed it in the location reserved for things he was not addressing.
"You came back," she said. Not accusation. Not welcome. Just the acknowledgment of a fact.
"It's a public courtyard," he said. Then, because this was not quite true given that the cathedral was technically on the Academy's periphery lands: "It's accessible to the public."
She tilted her head slightly, and the expression that crossed her face was not one he had a ready category for. It was the expression of someone who has encountered a response they find mildly interesting — not amused, exactly, but engaged in the way that a person is engaged by something that does not behave as predicted.
"It is," she agreed. "I was wondering if you'd come back."
"I wasn't planning to."
"No," she said, in a tone that indicated she did not find this particularly surprising. "What are you planning, generally?"
The question landed with a specific quality that he suspected was intentional — direct enough to require an answer, ambiguous enough to be about multiple things at once. He looked at her. She looked back. The moon-laurel light moved slightly as the night wind came through, and shadows shifted across her face.
"I don't know," he said. Which was the truest thing he had said to anyone in recent memory.
Something in her expression shifted — a small thing, almost invisible, the kind of shift that happens below the level of performed emotion. He filed this, too, in the location for things he was not addressing.
"You play the violin," she said. Not a question.
"I used to."
"That's an interesting distinction."
"It's an accurate one."
She looked at him for another moment, and then she looked away — out toward the far side of the courtyard, where the cathedral's main entrance stood with its doors sealed by the accumulated weight of years of non-use. When she looked back, her expression had simplified into something more direct.
"I need a musician," she said. "A real one. Not an Academy student looking for festival credit."
Something in the quality of that sentence — the slight lowering of her voice on the word real, the shift in it from performance to something less managed — made him listen differently. Not to the content. To the underneath of it.
"I don't play," he said again.
"I know," she said. And then: "I've been watching the light in your hands since you walked in. Whatever you think you don't do anymore, your hands haven't received the message."
He looked down. His left hand was in the chord position again. He had not noticed.
He closed it a second time and looked up to find her watching him with an expression that was not quite satisfaction and not quite sympathy and was, he decided, something he did not have adequate language for.
"I have to go," she said, which surprised him because he had expected her to press. She turned without fanfare, the sweep of her crimson skirt disturbing the dying flowers at her feet, and walked toward the cathedral's side door with the particular ease of someone who has no interest in looking back to see if she has created an impression.
She had not created one, he told himself.
He stood in the empty courtyard for another minute, the moon-laurel light around him, the fading flowers at the center of the paving, the echo of her movement still somehow present in the air. He looked at his left hand.
He went home.
In the practice room, for the first time in four months and eleven days, he took the Aetheris out of its case.
He did not play. He sat with it across his knees and ran his thumb along the strings without pressure — no sound, no resonance, no magic. Just the contact. Just the wood and the wire and the particular weight of a thing that had been made to be in his hands.
After a long time, he played one note.
Not a good note. Not a clean note. A note that arrived with all the rust and reluctance of something that had been silent for four months and wasn't sure it remembered how to speak.
But a note.
He closed the case. He went to bed. He lay in the dark and thought about the color of amber eyes and the flowers that only bloomed underfoot and the way the chord had moved into his hands without permission, and he told himself none of this was significant.
He was not, even then, entirely convincing.
