The walk back from Solitude Cathedral took Lysandra eleven minutes when her joints were cooperating and closer to eighteen when they were not.
Tonight was somewhere in between.
She kept her pace even, which required a specific quality of attention — the kind she had become expert at applying to her own body over the past two years, reading it the way a navigator reads weather: not with fear, but with the practical interest of someone who needs accurate information in order to continue. Her left knee was stiffer than usual. The cold did that. Frostmonth had been worse than she'd planned for, and she made a mental note to adjust the proportions of the warming tincture she mixed each evening.
The room she rented was above a candle-maker's shop on Willowgate Street, three blocks from the cathedral district and six from the Academy quarter. She had chosen it for its location and its price and, marginally, for the fact that the candle-maker, a small woman of indeterminate age named Marta, had taken one look at her on the day she arrived and said: "I don't need your history, just your coin, and I'll leave you to your business." This had been, in context, the most hospitable thing anyone had said to her in Oakhaven.
The room was small and contained exactly what she needed and several things she had added herself. The walls had acquired, over her weeks here, a layering of dried flowers — not decorative, though they were beautiful, but functional: moon-laurel flowers pinned at the window to monitor the ambient magic levels, silver-thorn sprigs along the door frame to alert her to anyone approaching with ill intent, frost-daisies above the bed because they were the flower her mother had kept above her own bed and she had not yet been able to stop this particular habit. The floor space was generous given the room's dimensions because she owned almost nothing — a travel chest, a writing table, a chair, the braided rug she had carried with her from the last three cities because it had been a gift from someone who was gone.
She sat at the writing table and took off her dance slippers.
The right foot was fine. The left foot — she examined it in the candle-light with the practiced neutrality of someone conducting an assessment rather than having a reaction. The ball of the foot, where the crystallization had first appeared six weeks ago, was slightly more pronounced tonight. In direct light, the skin there had a faint translucence, as though the body beneath had become in some small way less solid, more architectural. She pressed it gently with her thumb, testing sensation. The feeling was not pain, exactly. It was the absence of the quality that sensation requires — a kind of numbness with texture, like trying to feel through glass.
She recorded this in her journal.
The journal was the black-bound one, written in Moon-Laurel script — the language of her tribe, which she was, now, the last person living who wrote fluently. She had mixed feelings about this fact that she had long since moved past examining. The language would die with her. She had made her peace with this. What mattered was that it was not yet dead, and she could still write in it, and the act of writing in it was the closest thing she had to a conversation with the people she had lost.
Tonight's entry was longer than usual.
She wrote about the courtyard and the moon-laurel tree, which had been larger than she'd expected — the records from the tribe's archives had described it as ancient, but ancient covered a significant range, and the reality of it, the sheer physical presence of a tree that had been absorbing Cadence magic for centuries, was something that required several sentences to adequately render. She wrote about the dance — the Rite of Lustration, the seventh iteration of the practice sequence, which was coming together in the lower body but still fragile in the transitional passages between movements. She would need more rehearsal time on the stone floor specifically; the resonance from old paving was different from wood, and the Rite required stone, the real Rite, the final one, and her body needed to know the feel of it.
Then she wrote about him.
She had known who he was before she turned around. Not because she had eyes in the back of her head, though the tribe's elder had always claimed she was close to it, but because the air in the courtyard had changed when he entered. Not dramatically — not the way it changed when she danced, which was a structured and deliberate alteration of the magic particles in the immediate environment. This was subtler. A shift in weight, in potential, the way the atmosphere changes before a storm — not weather, but a living thing that carries a significant quantity of unresolved force and does not know what to do with it.
She had felt that before. In mirrors.
She wrote: He came back. I expected him to come back — the draw to the space is strong, and he is not as shut down as he believes. But I did not expect the hands. He had moved into a chord position without awareness. His body still knows. This is important.
She paused. Added: His eyes are the wrong shade. I thought from the records they would be darker. They are not dark. They are the color of deep water when the light is gone from it — that specific blue that is almost grey, that is both colors and neither. It is a difficult color.
She looked at this sentence for a moment and then continued writing without addressing it.
The plan, as it currently stood, required three things: access to Valerius Vance, access to the Aetheris, and enough time before her body became non-functional for her to complete the Rite of Lustration. The second and third were constrained by facts she could not alter. The first was the variable. She had made progress on the first tonight — he had come back, he had spoken to her, he had not run when the conversation became direct. These were not small things. Men who have built walls as high as his do not usually stay in the same courtyard as a stranger asking inconvenient questions.
The lie was necessary. She had reviewed it from every angle she was capable of, and she remained convinced.
The truth — that she was dying, that she had come to Oakhaven specifically to find him, that she needed his violin to complete a sacred rite before her body stopped cooperating — would produce one of two outcomes. He would refuse entirely, because people who are already managing grief do not respond well to being handed additional grief. Or he would agree, and then spend every remaining moment she had looking at her the way people had looked at her tribe's elders in those last months — with the particular face of grief pre-emptively worn by someone who cannot bear what they are watching but cannot look away.
She had watched Valerius Vance stand in the dark and look at her dance. She knew that face. She recognized in it the precise configuration of a person who still does not know what they are feeling but whose body has already decided. She had no intention of filling that face with grief before she had given him something better to feel.
Hence: Caelum.
Caelum Sterling was straightforward enough as research subjects went — Royal Cavalry Captain, twenty-one, known for his integrity, known for his friendship with Valerius, known to be the sort of man who could be trusted with a secret if the reason was sufficient. She had identified him as the structural element of the lie within three days of arriving in Oakhaven and had been watching his patterns since. He took his morning patrol route along the Promenade every second day. She would approach him there.
She opened the journal to the front section, where she kept the records she had compiled before arriving in Oakhaven. The clan records, translated from the older Moon-Laurel script into her own annotations. The description of the Rite of Lustration: its requirements, its intended effects, its history.
The Rite of Lustration was the Moon-Laurel tribe's final gift to the world — a Weave-Dancing sequence designed to release the stored Cadence energy of the tribe's lineage back into the continent's resonance field. A death rite, in the strictest sense, but one that converted ending into continuation: the magic that had lived in the Moon-Laurel people for generations would not disappear with them but would be redistributed, absorbed back into the world they had drawn it from. This was what the elders had wanted. This was what she had come to do.
It required a Cadence instrument of Royal-level resonance capacity. The Aetheris was, to her knowledge, the only such instrument currently active in Aethelgard. And it required a musician capable of full Cadence Manipulation — not technical skill, though that was necessary, but the deeper requirement: a musician whose emotional resonance was open enough to function as a channel for something larger than performance.
Valerius could not do this yet. His channel was blocked.
That was her other problem, and the reason that six months had always been the estimate rather than a certainty. She needed to unblock him. She needed to do it quickly enough that there would still be time. She needed to do it without telling him why she needed to do it.
She closed the journal.
For a moment she sat in the quiet of the room and listened to the candle-maker's house settle around her — the familiar sounds of old wood and old plaster, the distant sound of a canal boat, someone's dog somewhere deciding that the night required its input. She pressed her hand flat against her sternum and felt her heartbeat, which was steady, which was still exactly the right speed, which she chose to receive as good news.
"I'm sorry," she said to the room, which was also to no room in particular, which was also to him, to the man with the wrong-shade eyes who did not yet know she was going to rearrange his life. "For the lie that's coming. I think it's the right kind."
She blew out the candle.
In the dark, she lay still and listened to her own heartbeat, counting. Steady. Even. Hers, for now.
She thought about the chord she had seen move into his hands without permission.
She thought: there you are. I found you. Now stay.
