She was already there when he arrived.
This was either coincidence or planning, and Valerius had spent enough time around people who planned things carefully to recognize the particular quality of an apparently casual presence. She was beneath the moon-laurel tree in the late afternoon light, moving through something slower than what he had seen her do at night — a practice sequence, he recognized, the kind of repetitive structural work that underlies any performed skill. She moved through it without the incandescence of the previous nights. This was a different register: focused, deliberate, the kind of work that has no audience and requires none.
She stopped when she saw him, which meant she had seen him the moment he came through the gate, which confirmed the planning hypothesis.
"You're here early," she said.
"It's late afternoon."
"I usually have this space until the sixth hour. You're two hours early by my count."
"I didn't know the space had a schedule."
"Everything has a schedule." She turned to face him fully, arms loose at her sides, with the easy physical confidence of someone entirely comfortable in their own body. The afternoon light caught her differently than the moonlight had — it made her look less otherworldly, more real, which was in some respects more unsettling. "What are you doing here?"
It was a straightforward question and he did not have a straightforward answer, so he gave her the next best thing. "Walking."
She looked at him with the expression he was beginning to recognize as her default assessment mode: attentive, rapid, slightly impersonal, the way a craftsperson looks at a piece of work they're trying to evaluate. "You came from the city direction. The Academy?"
"The market district."
She nodded, as if this confirmed something. "You walk when you're thinking."
"Most people do."
"Not the same way. Most people walk toward something. You walk in circles."
He looked at her. She looked back. In the silence he became aware of the moon-laurel flowers moving very slightly in the late afternoon wind, the silver-white petals making a dry, soft sound against each other. The courtyard had a different quality in daylight — less dreamlike, more structural, the worn pavers and overgrown edges visible in a way that night softened.
"You're Valerius Vance," she said. Not a question.
"I didn't tell you my name."
"You didn't need to. I asked." A brief pause. "I asked before I approached you. I look into things before I approach them. It saves time."
"Before you approached me," he repeated. "You mean on the night I walked into a cathedral you were using without invitation."
"I said I look into things. I didn't say I waited for formal invitations."
He should have left. He was aware of this as a logical conclusion while also being aware that he had not moved toward the gate. "You were using a public space for private rehearsal and you're characterizing my presence as intrusion."
"I'm characterizing it accurately. You came to watch me. That's fine. I don't mind being watched." She tilted her head slightly, the amber eyes with their strange inner light focusing on him with a directness he found difficult to categorize. "Most people who come to watch performers mind being caught doing it. You didn't mind."
"I wasn't hiding."
"No," she said. "You weren't." Something shifted in her expression, too quick to read. "I'm Aurelia Thorne."
The name had the slightly formal quality of an alias — too complete, too considered — but he had no basis for this impression beyond intuition, and intuition was not information. He filed it.
"You said you needed a musician," he said.
"I do."
"The city is full of musicians."
"The city is full of people who play instruments," she said, with a precision that he recognized because it was the same distinction his mother had drawn, once, in a context so different that the echo of it was disorienting. "That's different."
"What's the difference, by your definition?"
She looked at him for a moment, with an assessment that felt slightly different from the ones preceding it — less diagnostic, more personal. Then she said: "Come back tonight. Bring the violin."
"I told you. I don't play."
"You told me you used to play. That's different." She turned away, back toward the moon-laurel tree, with the deliberate ease of someone who has made their point and is willing to let it sit. "Come back tonight or don't. The space will be here either way."
He left.
He did not intend to go back.
By the seventh hour, he was standing in his practice room with the Aetheris in his hands, which was information.
The decision, such as it was, arrived in the way that decisions arrived for him when he was not making them consciously: all at once, as a settled fact. He was going back to the cathedral. He was bringing the violin. He had not decided why, except that somewhere in the conversation this afternoon she had said something — he identified it after a moment as the word real, applied to musician — that had landed in a location he had not expected and was not prepared to ignore.
He arrived at the cathedral as the night settled properly over the city, when the crystal lanterns had shifted to their deep-evening frequency and the moon-laurel tree was in its full nocturnal bloom, silver-white in the dark.
She was inside the cathedral proper, which he had not expected — the main doors were still sealed, but the side door stood open, and within, the cathedral's central nave was a long, high space of gothic stone arches and broken stained-glass windows, the colored glass long since gone but the tracery remaining, filtering the moonlight into geometric patterns across the ancient floor.
She was standing in the center of the nave, and she looked up when he entered with the expression of someone who had expected this.
"You came," she said.
"You said the space would be here either way."
"I said that." She looked at the case in his hand. "Did you bring it?"
He held up the case without answering.
She nodded, once, and turned away to prepare — which involved, apparently, removing her outer jacket and working through a brief sequence of stretches with the focused attention of a professional. He stood in the nave and looked at the architecture and tried not to look at her specifically, which was unsuccessful.
The stained-glass tracery above the high windows was still beautiful — the stone carved into geometric patterns, the empty spaces where the glass had been filled instead with night air and, beyond it, the blue-black of the Frostmonth sky. The floor was the old cathedral stone, the same material as the courtyard pavers, large irregular slabs worn smooth by centuries of feet. The acoustics, he noticed without particularly trying to, were extraordinary — the kind of natural resonance chamber that certain architects had spent their careers trying to replicate and never quite managing.
"What do you want me to play?" he asked.
"Nothing specific." She had finished her preparation and was standing loosely, weight balanced, the way a dancer stands when they are technically at rest but technically ready. "Just follow me. Don't lead. Don't correct. Don't play what's technically correct — play what you hear."
He looked at her. "What I hear."
"When you watch me move, there's a sound in your head. I can see it in your hands." She nodded at his left hand, which had, without his awareness, already moved into position against the strings. "That. Whatever that is. Play that."
He should have argued. He had several objections prepared and chose, for reasons he did not examine, not to deploy them.
He set the bow to the strings.
The first note came out rough — four months of disuse in the strings and in the muscles both, the resonance tentative and uneven. He felt the Aetheris resist and then, slowly, begin to warm to the contact the way an instrument does when it has been cold and is relearning the heat of the player's hands.
She began to move.
He played.
What happened in the following minutes was not technically impressive. His playing was not the playing he was capable of on his best days — it was uncertain, inconsistent, following her movements with a delayed quality that any competent teacher would have noted and corrected. But it was following her. The bow was responding to what he saw rather than what was written on a page that didn't exist, and there was something in this — the immediate, unmediated quality of it, music made in response to a present thing rather than a planned thing — that was different from anything he had done in a very long time.
The magic, when it came, was small. Not the full resonance of Cadence Manipulation at his level — barely a shimmer in the air between them, faint enough that it might have been the moonlight through the tracery. But it was there. He felt it the way a limb feels after long disuse: the specific, overwhelming relief of something functioning again that had been silent.
She stopped.
He stopped.
The nave was quiet.
She turned to look at him, and the expression on her face was not triumph, not relief, not the satisfaction of someone whose plan had succeeded. It was something quieter than any of those. Recognition, perhaps. The particular expression of someone who has found what they were looking for and is not yet certain whether this is good news.
"Come back tomorrow," she said.
"I didn't say I'd come back at all."
"You're here."
"That doesn't—"
"Tomorrow," she said, with a finality that was not unkind. "We'll work on the second movement."
He put the Aetheris back in its case.
He left without committing to anything.
On the walk home, the city was more color than it had been. Not vivid — not the full, unrestricted color of a world seen by someone who is not operating under the weight of four months of grief. But more than grey. The lanterns were amber rather than simply bright. The canal was dark blue rather than simply dark.
He noticed this, catalogued it in the location reserved for things he was not addressing, and kept walking.
Behind him, the cathedral held its dark and its silence, and in the nave, a girl with amber eyes stood in the geometric moonlight and pressed her hand against her sternum and counted her heartbeat, and thought: there's enough time. There's still enough time.
