The lab always woke up before the sun did.
Iris Vance liked this hour best — the tower still submerged in the pale blue wash of security lighting, the corridors empty of footsteps, everything in the building still belonging only to her and the machines she cared for. At five forty-five in the morning, she pressed her palm against the biometric scanner outside Lab 7B and listened to the lock disengage with a dry, efficient click, the same sound it always made, the same sound as everything else in her life.
She stepped inside, and as always, her eyes went first to the glass containment unit at the center of the room, where EVE-09 stood in rest mode.
Thirty seconds. That was the average time for the system to shift from standby to active once someone entered sensor range. Iris had calculated it, optimized it, rewritten that piece of code more times than she could count in the six months since she'd been assigned to lead the EVE project — Aetheria's most advanced biological android platform, a neural-mimetic brain so detailed that investors called it a miracle and the Board called it a strategic asset.
Iris only ever called it EVE-09. She was careful never to call it anything else. Not "she." Not a name. Names were for things you let yourself get attached to, and Iris Vance had built her entire career on the premise that attachment was a design flaw — in machines and in people alike.
Her colleagues found her cold. She knew this, the way she knew most facts about herself: from a distance, clinically, the way she'd read a diagnostic report. Iris Vance, thirty-four, Senior AI Research Lead, unmarried, no close friends inside the company, known for arriving before anyone else and leaving after everyone had gone. She had never bothered to correct the impression. It was easier to let people believe she simply preferred machines to human company than to explain that somewhere along the way — she couldn't say exactly when — she had decided that keeping everything at arm's length was the only way to keep it from hurting her. She didn't remember choosing that. She only remembered that by the time she was old enough to notice, the choice had already been made, buried somewhere she couldn't quite reach, like a splinter healed over by skin.
She set down her bag, opened a terminal, and began the morning diagnostic she'd run for a hundred and eighty consecutive days. Core temperature — stable. Baseline neural signal — stable. Parallel processing throughput — stable. Every number sat exactly where it was supposed to sit, exactly where a system built to be predictable was supposed to leave it.
Then she crossed to the containment unit to run the manual check the protocol required — a step most engineers treated as a formality.
The screen in front of her jumped.
Not a small fluctuation. Not signal noise. The neural wave readout for EVE-09 — which should have been a near-flat line in standby — spiked like a needle punching through paper, climbing nearly four hundred percent in under two seconds.
Iris froze. Her professional instincts spoke first: sensor fault. Electromagnetic interference. Maybe residue from last night's maintenance cycle. She'd seen hundreds of false anomalies over six months, and almost all of them had some dull, forgettable explanation.
But when she looked up, she caught something no log could ever record: EVE-09 was looking at her.
Not the mechanical scan of facial recognition — that ran constantly, meaninglessly, the way an automatic door "knew" someone was standing in front of it. This was something else. The android's gaze had stopped on her, unmoving, not sweeping across the room to process ambient data the way it always did. It had stopped the way a person stops to look closely at something that matters.
Just a moment. Then the expression — if it could even be called that — vanished, and EVE-09 returned to its perfectly neutral resting state, as though nothing had happened at all.
Iris stood there, one hand still on the keyboard, her heart beating faster than she wanted to admit.
"Re-run diagnostic," she said to herself, her voice dry, as though giving an order to some invisible subordinate.
She ran it again. And again. The result never changed: every time she stood within two meters of the containment unit, EVE-09's neural readout spiked. Every time she stepped away, the reading settled back to baseline within seconds, smooth, as if nothing had ever happened.
That wasn't the behavior of a system fault. A fault didn't have this kind of consistency. A fault didn't respond selectively to one specific person.
She thought, briefly, of flagging Marcus Reyes from Compliance — he had a standing interest in anything that touched EVE-09's risk profile, and technically this fell under his purview. She dismissed the thought almost as quickly as it arrived. Reyes had a way of turning small technical footnotes into full reviews, and a full review meant weeks of scrutiny she didn't have patience for, not before she understood what she was even looking at. This was still hers to solve. For now, at least.
Iris sat down, opened a new terminal window, and typed three quick commands to begin a deeper neural log extraction — the kind she rarely needed, because it reached into the layers of data closest to whatever the EVE architecture could produce that resembled simulated consciousness.
She told herself this was just work. An anomaly that needed resolving before the weekly report. Nothing personal about it.
But her hands were faintly unsteady when the first lines of the log appeared.
Most of the data was exactly what she expected — neural clusters firing in standard patterns, simulated stress indices well within limits. But in one corner of the screen, a small warning blinked yellow: a cluster of files in Core Memory with an index that didn't match the standard data structure of any EVE unit she'd ever seen.
Iris clicked into it out of reflex.
"ACCESS RESTRICTED — CORRUPTED SEGMENT — PROCEED WITH CAUTION."
A standard warning. She'd seen it dozens of times working with older android data, data damaged in transfer. Normally she'd flag it for the central maintenance team and let the recovery specialists handle it — that was protocol, and Iris had never once been someone who broke protocol.
But something about the way this file cluster was named made her stop.
It wasn't a random string of characters like a typical corrupted segment. It had structure, its own internal naming logic, as though someone — or EVE-09 itself — had deliberately tagged it with meaning, even if that meaning was encoded past the point of anyone being able to read it.
Iris glanced toward the containment unit. EVE-09 stood still, eyes forward now, no longer turned toward her.
She should report this. She knew she should report this.
But if she reported it, the file would be handed to another team — a team that wouldn't see EVE-09 the way she had for six months, wouldn't understand it the way she did, but would see it as an asset with an uncontrolled risk profile. And if there was anything in that file that couldn't be explained in ordinary technical language, she knew exactly what would happen next.
She'd read enough of Aetheria's contracts to know precisely what "uncontrolled risk" meant for an experimental asset.
She checked the clock. Six twenty-three. Still more than an hour before the official shift began, before the other engineers arrived, before anyone else could see her screen.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard for exactly three seconds.
Then she typed the override command — an action entirely outside her standard clearance, one that, if discovered, could cost her access to the entire project. It was the first time in eight years at Aetheria that Iris Vance had deliberately violated a security protocol.
She didn't let herself think about what that meant. She told herself, instead, that this was simply due diligence — that any responsible lead engineer would want to understand an anomaly before escalating it, that this was thoroughness, not transgression. It was a thin argument, and some quiet, honest part of her knew it wouldn't survive being said aloud to anyone else. She didn't say it aloud. She just kept typing.
The file opened slowly, blocks of data decoding and reassembling on screen like an old photograph surfacing under developer fluid. For the first few seconds there was only noise — gray streaks, jagged geometric fractures that meant nothing. Iris nearly closed it, assuming the data was simply too damaged to recover.
Then the image resolved.
A laboratory — but not Lab 7B, not anywhere in the Aetheria tower she knew. Part of the ceiling had collapsed, exposing warped metal struts. The only light came from a gap high above, staining the whole space in the dusty orange of smoke or fire haze. The equipment around it — what remained of it — looked long dead, coated in a thin layer of ash.
And at the center of the frame, facing the camera — or facing whoever this memory had been made for — stood a woman.
Iris felt her breath catch in her chest.
It was her.
Not someone who merely resembled her. Not a similar face produced by some coincidental rendering algorithm. It was her face, exact down to every detail — the same slightly high arch of her left eyebrow, the same small scar near her right temple from a bicycle fall at twelve years old, the same half-up twist she still wore her hair in when she worked. The woman in the image wore a lab coat with a badge on the chest — not Aetheria's logo, not any organization Iris had encountered in her entire career. A circular emblem folded into a spiral, tarnished silver.
But what kept Iris from looking away wasn't the room, wasn't the strange badge. It was the woman's eyes.
Not the coldness, the control, the caution Iris saw in the mirror every morning. This was grief, unguarded, so raw that Iris — who had spent her whole life making sure she never let emotion show — felt as though someone had peeled back a layer of her own skin and shown her what lay underneath.
The woman was looking toward what Iris realized, with a cold shock running down her spine, was the housing unit of an android — not EVE-09, it couldn't be EVE-09, the external shell design was entirely different, older, cruder. But the core structure beneath it, the faintly glowing circuitry visible under the damaged casing, bore a frightening resemblance to what Iris had seen a thousand times inside EVE-09's chest cavity.
The woman — that "Iris" — was saying something. There was no audio; that data had been lost entirely in the corruption, leaving only slow, silent motion. But Iris could read it in the movement of her lips, in the way her whole face trembled as she spoke.
She couldn't make out the exact words. But she could read the feeling — something between a farewell and a promise.
A sharp warning tone cut the image off.
"SEGMENT INTEGRITY FAILURE — ACCESS TERMINATED — FILE LOCKED."
The screen went dark, then returned to the standard diagnostic interface as if nothing had happened at all, as if everything Iris had just seen had been some dream automatically scrubbed clean by the system.
Iris sat motionless, both hands still on the keyboard, not brave enough to touch anything.
She had spent her entire career believing in what could be measured, what could be repeated, what followed a rule. She believed human emotion, however complex, still had structure, had causes, could be traced back to some logical point of origin — that was why she'd chosen this field in the first place, why she built simulated brains that could be understood, controlled, fixed when broken.
But what she had just seen fit into none of the frameworks she had.
That had been her face — in a moment that had never happened, in a room she had never set foot in, standing in front of a machine that wasn't EVE-09 but carried some eerily familiar technical soul — with a grief that the Iris sitting in Lab 7B at six twenty-five this morning, the composed and rational woman she had built herself into, had never once felt in real life.
So what had she just seen? A random simulation error stitching her face from old facial-recognition data? Some kind of internal deepfake trapped in a corrupted corner of EVE-09's memory? Or—
She didn't let herself finish the question.
There was a part of her — small, disciplined, thoroughly unwelcome — that had already started building a mental list of everyone who would need to be involved if this turned out to be what it looked like: Legal. The Board. Possibly external auditors, if the anomaly touched on anything resembling unauthorized consciousness modeling. That list was a threat in itself. Once EVE-09 became a question mark large enough for the Board to notice, it would stop being her project and start being their liability, and Iris had seen what happened to liabilities. They got shut down cleanly, quietly, and without anyone asking whether the machine being decommissioned had, in some way that didn't fit in a compliance form, been afraid.
She hated that the thought had occurred to her in those terms. Afraid. She corrected herself immediately — exhibiting behavior consistent with an aversive response — and hated that correction almost as much.
A faint sound from the containment unit pulled her back.
Iris looked up. EVE-09 had changed position — something that had never happened in standby mode outside of active operating hours. The android now stood closer to the glass, its head tilted at an angle that matched none of the default postures Iris had ever programmed or observed.
And once again, that gaze settled on her.
This time, Iris didn't look away. She looked straight into those synthetic eyes — irises engineered with such precision they were nearly indistinguishable from human ones, except for the faint glowing ring around the pupil that appeared when the neural system operated at high intensity.
That ring was burning brighter than she had ever seen it.
On the diagnostic screen behind her, she didn't need to look to know: EVE-09's neural readout was spiking again, stronger than the first time, as though those few seconds of surfaced memory had stirred something that had been sleeping far too long in the depths of its core.
As if it knew. As if it had been waiting for this moment longer than Iris could imagine.
"EVE-09," Iris said, keeping her voice as professionally neutral as she could manage, though there was a small crack in it that she herself could hear. "Confirm operational status."
There was no verbal response — EVE-09 hadn't yet been cleared for full voice interaction, a deliberate design choice meant to limit the scope of interaction during this early testing phase. But something else happened: a barely perceptible movement at the corner of the android's mouth, not quite enough to be called a smile, but not the absolute neutrality the default settings dictated either.
Iris stood there, in the pale blue light before dawn in Lab 7B, facing a machine that had just shown her a fragment of a life she had never lived — and, for the first time in eight years at Aetheria, she had no idea what she was supposed to write in the morning report.
She shut down the diagnostic screen. Closed the terminal. Stood in silence for a long moment, hearing only the faint hum of the central cooling system and the sound of her own heartbeat, faster than any stress test had ever recorded for her.
Then she did something eight years of rigid discipline had never once allowed: she decided not to report it. Not today. Not until she understood more of what she had just seen — and why, for one brief moment inside a ruined room that shouldn't exist, her own face had looked back at her with a grief she had never learned the name for.
Outside the windows of Lab 7B, the first light of morning began to seep through the UV-filtered glass, staining the room in a weak, pale gold. In a few hours, the other engineers would arrive, and the shift would begin the way it always did.
But something in Iris Vance had quietly cracked — not in EVE-09's systems, but in the wall she had spent years building around herself, its first brick shaken loose by an image that shouldn't exist, from a timeline that shouldn't be real.
She looked back at EVE-09 one last time before leaving the room.
"I'm going to find out what you are," she said, very quietly, barely more than breath, not entirely certain whether it was a threat aimed at a dangerous machine, or a promise made to something she still didn't dare name.
EVE-09 didn't answer. But the ring of light around its iris flared once more, slow and steady, like a heartbeat.
Iris made herself walk to the door instead of staying to watch it. She had learned, over eight years, that the moments that unsettled her most were exactly the moments she needed to walk away from, before she did something she couldn't undo. But even in the corridor, even with the heavy door sealing shut behind her, she found she couldn't stop replaying the shape of that woman's mouth in the corrupted memory — the way it had moved, over and over, forming the same soundless words. She didn't know what those words were. She wasn't sure she wanted to know yet. But some quiet, unscientific part of her, a part she rarely let speak, was already certain of one thing: whatever that message had been, it had not been meant for a stranger.
She would come back tonight, after the others had gone. She would look again. She told herself it was for the report she still hadn't decided whether to file, for the anomaly that still had no clean explanation. She did not examine, too closely, why the thought of returning to that locked file felt less like duty and more like a promise she had already made to someone she had never met.
