The milk was boiling over.
Nisha caught it just in time, yanking the pot off the burner with one hand while using the other to keep Aanya from sliding off the kitchen counter where the toddler had somehow climbed in the thirty seconds her mother's back was turned.
"Aanya." Nisha's voice came out somewhere between a warning and a laugh. "We have talked about this."
Aanya blinked at her — large, dark eyes framed by lashes that curled at the tips — and said, with enormous confidence, "Up."
"Yes, you are very much up. That is the problem."
She lifted her daughter down, settled her on the worn mat near the window, and handed her the stacking rings that had become Aanya's current obsession. The little girl accepted them with the gravity of someone receiving important documents and immediately set to work dismantling what she had just built.
Nisha exhaled. Poured the milk. Added the small measure of sugar Aanya liked, the kind of detail that had become muscle memory over eighteen months of mornings exactly like this one — rushed, a little chaotic, threaded through with a warmth so ordinary and so complete that she sometimes forgot, for whole hours at a time, that anything in her life had ever broken.
Then she turned back to the laptop open on the kitchen table and remembered.
The deadline for the Hendricks proposal was in four hours. She had two renders left to finish. The printer had jammed twice yesterday and the replacement cartridge she'd ordered had not arrived. Her studio account — the business one, not the personal one she kept carefully separate — was sitting at a balance that made her chest tighten every time she looked at it.
She sat down, tucked one leg under herself the way she always did when she was working, and pulled the laptop closer.
Three minutes later, her phone rang.
The name on the screen was Priya — her business partner, her closest friend for the better part of a decade, the only person besides Nisha's mother who knew the full shape of everything Nisha carried.
She answered on the second ring. "I'm finishing the Hendricks renders. Tell me nothing is on fire."
"Nothing is on fire," Priya said. "Something is the opposite of on fire. Something is —" A pause, the kind Priya deployed when she was trying to decide how to deliver news she knew would land strangely. "Nisha. The Malhotra Group called this morning."
The name moved through her like cold water.
She kept her voice level. Years of practice. "Which Malhotra Group."
"The hotel one. The — you know which one, Nisha, there is only one Malhotra Group in this city that matters and they have just shortlisted us for the Celestia project."
Nisha set down her coffee cup very carefully.
The Celestia project. She had seen the brief circulating in design circles for the past month — a complete interior overhaul of the flagship Malhotra property in the city, plus conceptual work for two new properties breaking ground in the spring. The kind of contract that could sustain a studio like hers for two years. The kind of contract that got written up in the industry journals, the kind that made other clients call.
The kind that could mean Aanya never had to know what a tight month looked like.
"How shortlisted," Nisha said.
"Final three. They want a presentation next Monday. Nine in the morning." Priya's voice had gone careful in a way that meant she was watching for something. "At the Malhotra Tower. Thirtieth floor."
The kitchen felt very quiet suddenly. Aanya had abandoned the stacking rings and was now examining a wooden spoon she had retrieved from somewhere with the focused attention she gave to all objects she considered potentially useful.
"It's a big name," Nisha said. "A common enough name."
A beat.
"Nisha."
"I know."
"We don't have to —"
"I know," she said again, and this time it came out steadier. "Send me the brief. I'll look at it tonight after Aanya goes down."
She ended the call and sat very still for a moment.
Malhotra. The word had lived in a locked room inside her for two years. She had been careful never to look it up, never to follow the business news that might surface the name, never to let herself wonder. It was a discipline she had built the way you build anything necessary — one deliberate choice at a time, repeated until it became reflex.
But she was a designer. Research was not optional. And in the next four seconds, without fully deciding to, she opened a new browser tab and typed: *Malhotra Hotel Group CEO*.
The results loaded immediately.
The photograph at the top of the page was from some industry gala — black tie, marble backdrop, the kind of event that existed in a different atmosphere entirely from the one Nisha breathed. He was standing slightly apart from the group around him, the way she remembered he always stood in rooms full of people — present but unreachable, like a door left open just enough to suggest there was something worth entering for, but never enough to actually let you in.
Arjun Malhotra. Thirty-two. Chief Executive Officer, Malhotra Hotel Empire. The caption listed awards, expansions, a recent acquisition that had apparently rattled the entire hospitality sector.
Nisha looked at the photograph for a long time.
Then she heard a small sound behind her and turned.
Aanya had lost interest in the wooden spoon and was now watching her mother with an expression of mild curiosity. She had her head tilted at a slight angle. And as Nisha looked at her — really looked, the way you sometimes couldn't allow yourself to in the ordinary rush of a morning — she felt the familiar ache move through her ribcage like a tide.
Aanya had her mother's mouth and her mother's restlessness and the particular way she flung herself into sleep each night as if exhaustion was something to be conquered rather than surrendered to. But the eyes were not Nisha's. The slight, skeptical narrowing of them when something failed to make sense — that was not Nisha's. The way she was looking at her mother right now, with that specific quality of patience that was somehow also a quiet demand for honesty —
Nisha closed the laptop.
"Come here, baby," she said, and her voice came out rougher than she intended.
Aanya considered this invitation briefly, then decided to accept it, crossing the kitchen on slightly unsteady legs with the determined gait that made Nisha's heart catch every single time. She climbed into her mother's lap with focused effort and settled there with a small sound of satisfaction.
Nisha held her tightly. Pressed her face into the soft warmth of her daughter's hair. Breathed.
The Hendricks proposal. Four hours. She needed to finish the renders.
She needed to decide what to do about Monday.
---
The brief arrived at half past eight that evening, after Aanya had been bathed and fed and read to and finally, triumphantly, deposited into sleep.
Nisha poured herself tea, sat cross-legged on the floor with her back against the sofa — her preferred working position, the one she reverted to when she was thinking rather than drafting — and opened the document.
It was a serious brief. She had worked with enough clients to know the difference between a company that had assembled a design package because their PR team told them to and a company that actually understood what they wanted. This was the latter. The language was precise, the references were considered, the scope was ambitious without being delusional. Someone on the Malhotra team had thought carefully about this.
She read it twice.
Then she set it aside and looked at the wall.
The studio was in trouble. Not catastrophic trouble, not yet — but the Hendricks project was smaller than projected, the Anand contract had fallen through in October, and the new associate she had hired in the spring had cost more to onboard than anticipated. The numbers were not desperate but they were pointed, and they were pointed in a direction she could not afford to ignore.
Aanya slept in the next room, making the small breathing sounds that Nisha had memorized in the first weeks of her daughter's life and never forgotten.
She thought about school fees. About the crack in the bathroom ceiling she had been meaning to fix for four months. About her mother's quiet, careful offers of help that Nisha had been quietly, carefully refusing.
She thought about walking into Malhotra Tower on Monday morning.
She thought about the photograph from the gala. The way he stood. The particular quality of remoteness he had always carried in public and shed, back then, only in private — only with her.
She had not let herself think about that in a very long time.
The thing was, she was not the same person she had been two years ago. The woman who had stood in her small apartment and read the message — formal, final, the kind of language that belonged to business communications and not to someone you had loved — and then sat down on the kitchen floor because her legs had simply stopped working: that woman had been rebuilt, piece by piece, by necessity and by the ferocious everyday demands of becoming someone's mother. Nisha Sharma at thirty was not Nisha Sharma at twenty-eight. She was harder where she needed to be and softer in ways that surprised her. She had learned things about herself in the past two years that she could not have imagined learning any other way.
She could walk into that building. She could do the presentation. She could execute the most beautiful interior design the Malhotra Group had ever commissioned and collect the contract fee and build her studio into something her daughter could one day look at and feel proud of.
She could do all of that.
The question was whether she could do it while also being in the same room as Arjun Malhotra and keeping the secret that had grown, over eighteen months, into the most significant fact of her entire life.
---
She was still sitting on the floor when her phone lit up with a new message.
It was from the Malhotra Group's project coordinator. Formal, efficient, courteous. Confirming Monday's meeting time. Attaching a non-disclosure agreement for preliminary review. Noting that the CEO would be present for the final shortlist presentations, as the Celestia project was a personal priority of his.
Nisha read the message twice.
Then she read the last line again.
*The CEO will be present.*
She set the phone face-down on the floor and sat with that for a long moment.
From the bedroom, Aanya made a small sound in her sleep — a murmur, something between a sigh and a syllable — and then was quiet again.
Nisha got up. She walked to the bedroom doorway and stood there in the dark, looking at the small shape of her daughter under the blanket printed with yellow elephants. Aanya slept with one arm flung out to the side, her fingers loosely curled, her face turned toward the small nightlight in the corner.
Even in sleep, there was something in the set of her jaw that was not Nisha's.
Nisha had spent eighteen months finding ways not to see it. Tonight she let herself look.
She stood there for a long time.
Then she went back to the kitchen, opened the laptop, and began drafting the reply to the project coordinator.
*Dear Ms. Kapoor, thank you for the confirmation. I will have the signed NDA to you by end of business Friday. My studio looks forward to the Monday presentation.*
She read it over once. Her hands were steady.
She pressed send.
The kitchen clock read 11:47. Outside, the city was doing what cities did — indifferent, ongoing, entirely unaware that in a small apartment on the fourteenth floor, a woman had just made a decision that was going to change everything.
Nisha closed the laptop and went to wash her cup.
She had four hours of renders to finish before morning. And somewhere across the city, in a tower full of glass and cold light, a man who did not know he had a daughter was sleeping without knowing that his entire world was about to shift on its axis.
Neither of them was ready.
But then, she thought, rinsing the cup under cold water and listening to her daughter breathe through the monitor on the counter — neither of them had been ready the first time, either.
And look what that had made.
