Arjun Malhotra had not always been a man who woke before the sun.
There had been a version of him — younger, less careful, embarrassingly willing to believe that the world was something you could meet on its own terms — who had slept deeply and without discipline and thought nothing of it. That version felt, at this distance, like a character in a story someone else had told him about. Plausible in outline. Unrecognizable in detail.
The man who existed now set his alarm for 4:45 and was usually awake before it.
He moved through the penthouse gym in the grey pre-dawn with the focused efficiency of someone who had long since stopped thinking of exercise as recreation. The weights were heavy. The repetitions were precise. The silence was complete except for the low sound of the city far below — forty floors down, already moving, already indifferent. He preferred it that way. Indifference was a language he understood.
The penthouse itself was exactly what you would expect from a man who had spent two years building a life that could not be accused of softness. Everything was considered and nothing was personal. The furniture was the kind that appeared in architecture journals. The kitchen held coffee and protein and very little else. The single large window in the living area framed the city skyline like a painting someone had hung for effect, and there was nothing on any surface — no photographs, no accumulated clutter, none of the small domestic evidence of a life being actually lived — that would have told a stranger anything about the man who occupied it.
Arjun had stopped noticing the emptiness approximately eighteen months ago. He considered this progress.
At six, he showered and dressed and sat at his desk with the city coming pale and clear through the glass, and Vikram arrived at six-fifteen with the efficiency that had made him indispensable, carrying a tablet and a coffee and the particular expression of careful neutrality he wore when the morning schedule was dense.
"Good morning, sir. Board review at eight, the Chandigarh contractor call at ten-thirty. The Celestia shortlist confirmation came through overnight — all three studios have confirmed Monday."
Arjun accepted the coffee without looking up from the overnight numbers. "Names."
Vikram read them. Two names Arjun recognized from previous projects — solid firms, predictable aesthetics, the kind of competent work that would satisfy the brief without surprising anyone. And then the third.
"Nisha Sharma Design Studio."
The number on the page in front of him did not change. The morning light through the window did not shift. Vikram's voice moved on immediately to something about the Chandigarh call, and Arjun let him speak for approximately four seconds before he said, very quietly, "Say that last one again."
Vikram stopped. Looked down at his tablet. "Nisha Sharma Design Studio. Small firm, been operating about three years, strong portfolio in boutique hospitality. The selection committee flagged them specifically for their work on the Indira property in —"
"Fine." The word came out with the flatness Arjun had spent considerable effort perfecting — the tone that communicated that a conversation had reached its natural end without requiring anything as inefficient as emotion. "Continue."
Vikram continued.
Arjun heard perhaps thirty percent of what followed.
The tablet was still on the desk when Vikram finished and excused himself to prepare for the board review. Arjun looked at it for a moment. Then he reached across, opened the shortlist file, and found the portfolio attachment.
He told himself he was performing due diligence. He was the CEO. This was his project. He reviewed all materials.
He opened it.
The work was good. Better than good — it was the kind of work that had a specific quality he recognized and had never been able to adequately name, the quality of spaces that felt inevitable rather than designed, as though the rooms had always been waiting to look exactly this way and someone had simply understood them well enough to say so. The colour choices were precise without being cold. The proportions had a logic that revealed itself slowly. There was a warmth to it that was completely at odds with how he was currently feeling.
He closed the file.
He sat back in his chair and looked at the city for a moment.
Then, without deciding to — that was the part he would not examine later, the part that happened before the decision — he was back two years and four months, in a different city, in a studio that smelled like turpentine and the particular tea she kept in a tin on the windowsill. She had been sitting on the floor surrounded by fabric swatches and loose sketches, one foot tucked under her, the late afternoon light doing something specific to the angles of her face, and she had looked up at him and said something he couldn't now remember — something ordinary, something about the project she was working on — and she had smiled in the way that she had, the way that was not performed for anyone, the way that meant she had simply forgotten, in that moment, to be anything other than entirely herself.
Arjun became aware that he was holding the coffee cup with unnecessary force.
He set it down. Straightened the tablet. Aligned it precisely with the edge of the desk.
Two years was sufficient time to have resolved something like this. He had, in fact, resolved it. He had resolved it through the acquisition of three new properties, the restructuring of the Group's entire Southeast Asian portfolio, and approximately four hundred early mornings in a gym that cost more per square foot than most people's apartments. The resolution was complete. There was nothing left to examine.
His phone rang.
His mother's name appeared on the screen, and he answered it with the same expression he brought to board meetings — attentive, measured, giving nothing away.
"Arjun." Savita Malhotra's voice had a quality he had grown up trying to decode and eventually accepted he never would — warmth and precision in exact equal measure, impossible to tell, at any given moment, which one was driving. "You didn't call last night."
"I had a late call with the Singapore team."
"Mm." A pause that said several things simultaneously. "Your grandmother is asking about Sunday. We thought dinner, the whole family. And Arjun —" another pause, this one more deliberate — "the Kapoors will be joining us. Sia is in town through the end of the month."
He looked at the window. At the city laid out below him, indifferent and ongoing.
Sia Kapoor was accomplished and elegant and entirely suitable and had done nothing whatsoever to deserve being used as a piece in a game Arjun had never agreed to play. He was aware of this. He was also aware that his awareness of it had not, in eighteen months of family dinners and carefully arranged coincidences, produced any action on his part that had meaningfully altered the situation.
"Fine," he said.
"Seven o'clock. Don't be late."
He ended the call and sat for a moment in the quiet.
The city below him was fully awake now, the light gone from grey to pale gold, the streets moving with the particular energy of a Monday morning beginning. Forty floors down, people were doing ordinary things — buying tea from corner stalls, arguing with autorickshaw drivers, carrying children on their hips, living lives that accumulated into something recognizable as a life.
Arjun had a tower and a portfolio and a calendar with no empty spaces, and a mother who called every morning, and a grandmother who asked about Sunday dinners, and a company that employed four thousand people across six countries, and a penthouse with nothing personal on any surface.
He pulled the tablet back toward him. Opened his schedule for the day. Eleven items before five o'clock.
He called Vikram back in.
"The Celestia presentations on Monday," he said, not looking up. "I'll be in the room for all three."
Vikram made a note. "All three, sir? Typically for the shortlist stage —"
"All three."
"Of course." A pause. "Shall I have the full portfolios sent to your personal device for weekend review?"
Arjun considered this for a moment that lasted slightly longer than it should have.
"Yes," he said. "All three."
Vikram nodded and left, and Arjun returned to the overnight numbers, and the morning moved forward with the precision he required of it, and he did not think about Nisha Sharma again for the remainder of the day.
This was not entirely true, but it was close enough to function as true, and functioning was what was required.
---
The family dinner on Sunday was exactly what family dinners in the Malhotra household had always been: beautiful, elaborate, and conducted at a frequency of emotion that Arjun had never quite learned to calibrate to.
His grandmother presided from her usual chair, sharp-eyed and draped in silk the colour of old gold, tracking every conversation in the room simultaneously with the focus of someone who had spent seventy years treating social occasions as intelligence-gathering operations. His younger brother Rohan moved through the room with the easy warmth that had always come naturally to him and that Arjun had long since stopped envying. Various aunts and cousins filled the remaining space with the overlapping noise of a family that expressed affection primarily through volume.
Sia Kapoor arrived at seven-fifteen with her parents and a composure that Arjun recognized as the same kind he wore himself — assembled carefully before walking into rooms like this one. He found he respected her for it. He wished, not for the first time, that respect were sufficient.
They were seated near each other at dinner, because of course they were.
"I heard the Celestia project is moving forward," she said, at some point between the second and third course. She said it naturally, the way someone says something they actually want to discuss rather than something deployed to fill silence.
"Presentations on Monday," he said.
"The shortlist is interesting. I saw the studios — there's a smaller firm on there that does quite beautiful work. Sharma something."
Arjun reached for his water glass.
"I haven't reviewed them all in detail," he said.
This was, as established, not entirely true.
Across the table, his mother was watching him with an expression of serene attention that he had learned, very young, to treat as a warning. He met her eyes briefly. She smiled and looked away to say something to the aunt beside her.
Arjun returned to his dinner.
The evening continued. There was dessert and then tea and then the long ritual of departure that Indian family gatherings required, the layered goodbyes that somehow took forty minutes, the promises to call, the reminders about next Sunday. Arjun moved through it all with the fluency of long practice, saying the right things, standing in the right places, being the version of himself that this context required.
It was past eleven when the last car left and the house staff began the quiet work of restoration. Arjun stood on the front steps for a moment, in the night air, before Rohan appeared beside him.
His brother stood quietly for a moment. This was one of the things Arjun valued about Rohan — he was capable of silence that was actually silent, not silence waiting to become a question.
But eventually: "You were somewhere else tonight."
"I was here all evening."
"Physically," Rohan said, with the mild precision of someone making an important distinction. Then he didn't say anything else, which was worse.
Arjun looked at the dark garden. At the lights of the city visible above the boundary wall. At the sky, which was doing nothing remarkable.
"There's a studio presenting on Monday," he said finally, not sure why he was saying it. "For the Celestia project. Someone I used to know."
Rohan was quiet for a moment.
"Used to know," he repeated.
"Yes."
Another silence.
"And you kept them on the shortlist," Rohan said. Not a question.
Arjun didn't answer. Which was, he supposed, an answer.
He said goodnight to his brother and got into the waiting car, and as the city moved past the windows, dark and lit and ongoing, he looked at his phone. Vikram had sent the full portfolios as requested. All three files, neatly labelled.
He did not open the third one.
He almost did, twice, on the drive home.
He put the phone face-down on the seat beside him and looked at the city instead, and told himself that Monday was a business meeting, and that he was a man who had resolved things, and that the particular quality of sleeplessness that had found him last night and appeared to be returning tonight was nothing more than the ordinary cost of running something as large and demanding as what he had built.
The car pulled up to the tower.
He rode the elevator to the fortieth floor.
He stood at the window for a long time.
And somewhere in the city below — in a direction he did not know, at an address he had never had — a woman was putting her daughter to bed and trying to prepare herself for Monday morning.
Neither of them slept well.
The city between them held its breath.
