She had rehearsed this.
That was the thing Nisha kept returning to, standing in the elevator of Malhotra Tower at 8:47 on a Monday morning with her portfolio case in one hand and her phone in the other and her heartbeat doing something she refused to acknowledge. She had rehearsed this. She had stood in front of her bathroom mirror on Thursday evening after Aanya was asleep and practiced the exact expression she would wear — professional, composed, the particular quality of pleasant neutrality that communicated competence without warmth, the face of a designer who was here to work and nothing else.
She had it. She knew she had it. It had held through the autorickshaw ride and the walk across the lobby and the security check and the wait for the elevator. It had held through thirty-nine floors of ascent, through the soft chime of each passing level, through the moment when the doors began to open.
And then the doors opened.
And he was there.
Not at the end of a long boardroom table. Not framed by assistants and agendas and the careful architecture of a formal introduction. Just there — three metres away in a grey corridor, turning back from a conversation with a man in a dark suit, papers in one hand, the morning light from the floor-to-ceiling windows falling across him in a way that the universe had absolutely no right to arrange.
Nisha had approximately one second.
She used it to keep moving — one step out of the elevator, two, her portfolio case held at exactly the right angle, her face doing the thing she had practiced. She was a professional. She was here for a meeting. She was perfectly fine.
He looked up.
The papers in his hand stilled.
It was not a long moment. Two seconds, perhaps three — the kind of duration that had no significance in the ordinary movement of a day and an enormous significance in every other possible sense. She saw him process it: the slight adjustment behind his eyes, the way something moved across his face and was immediately contained, the effort of containment visible only because she had once known exactly what his face looked like when it was not being controlled.
He looked older. That was the first coherent thought she managed. Not dramatically — not in a way that would have been obvious to anyone who hadn't memorized him — but in the way that two years of a particular kind of living leaves marks that are subtle and specific. There were new lines at the corners of his eyes. His jaw carried a tension that seemed habitual. He had the look of someone who slept less than he should and considered this acceptable.
He spoke first.
"Ms. Sharma." His voice was exactly as she remembered it and entirely unlike anything she had been prepared for. "The presentation room is at the end of the corridor."
Ms. Sharma.
Nisha heard the distance in it — measured, deliberate, the kind of formality that was also a boundary being drawn in real time. She understood it. She had expected something like it. She had prepared for it.
It still landed like a hand pressed flat against a bruise.
"Thank you," she said.
Her voice came out even. She was proud of that later, looking back — it had come out even, the right register, the right weight, not too warm and not too clipped. She nodded once, the way you nod to a senior colleague you are meeting for the first time, and she turned and walked in the direction he had indicated.
She did not look back.
This required more effort than anything else she had done that morning.
---
The first two presentations ran long.
Nisha sat in the waiting area outside the presentation room on a chair that was extremely comfortable and that she could not feel at all, and she looked at her portfolio notes without reading them, and she breathed.
The trick, she had found over the past two years, was to be very specific. Not *I am fine* — that was too large, too general, too easily argued with by the part of her that knew better. The trick was smaller: *I am sitting in a chair. The chair is grey. The carpet beneath my feet is charcoal. Through the window at the end of the hall, I can see the top floors of three other towers.* Specificity was an anchor. She had learned this in the weeks after Aanya was born, when the nights were very long and the fear was very large, and she had needed something to hold onto that was real and immediate and entirely outside herself.
She was sitting in a chair. The chair was grey.
The door at the end of the corridor opened and a woman in a well-cut blazer emerged, spoke briefly to the assistant outside, and left. Second presentation done.
Nisha closed her portfolio notes and sat up straight.
She had separated them in her mind — she had done this deliberately, over the past week, as a survival strategy. There was the man she had known two years ago: the one who had taken his coffee without sugar and read the newspaper from back to front and had a habit of going very quiet when something moved him, as though emotion required the same concentration as complex thought. That man lived in a locked room she had built carefully and maintained carefully and did not open.
And then there was Arjun Malhotra, CEO, the man at the end of this corridor, the man whose company was about to pay her studio enough money to keep the lights on for two years. That man was a client. She had worked with difficult clients before. She was good at it.
They were not the same person. She needed them to not be the same person.
The assistant appeared in the doorway. "Ms. Sharma? They're ready for you."
Nisha stood, picked up her portfolio case, and walked into the room.
---
There were three people at the table.
Two she didn't know — a woman in her fifties with reading glasses pushed up on her head who turned out to be the Group's Head of Development, and a younger man introduced as the project director. They were both professional and attentive and asked good questions and Nisha liked them immediately in the uncomplicated way you like people who are simply good at their jobs.
And then there was Arjun.
He sat at the head of the table with a legal pad in front of him and a pen he wasn't using and the expression she had seen on his face in the corridor — contained, evaluative, giving nothing. He did not introduce himself. He didn't need to. He looked at her presentation materials when she presented them and looked at her when she spoke and did not, in twenty-five minutes, say a single word.
Nisha had given presentations in rooms with difficult dynamics before. She had presented to investors who wanted her to fail and clients who had already made up their minds and committees that were conducting due diligence on decisions that had been made three weeks prior. She knew how to fill a room with her work, how to let the designs speak, how to make the space between her and her audience about the project rather than about anything else.
She did all of that now. She did it well. She could feel it going well in the way you sometimes can — the quality of attention in the room, the way the Head of Development leaned slightly forward during the section on the lobby concept, the moment the project director started taking his own notes rather than just following hers.
And through all of it, Arjun said nothing.
His silence had a specific quality. It was not inattentive — he was watching with the focused stillness of someone processing carefully. It was not hostile, exactly. It was the silence of a man who had decided something and was waiting to see if the thing in front of him would change his mind.
She finished the presentation. The Head of Development asked four questions, all good, all answered. The project director asked two more.
Then the room looked toward the head of the table.
Arjun looked down at his legal pad for a moment. When he looked up, he looked directly at her.
"The atrium concept," he said. "Third slide from the end. You've proposed removing the existing structural column cladding and replacing it with suspended botanical elements. The load-bearing implications of that reconfiguration — walk me through your engineering consultation process."
It was a precise question. It was also, Nisha recognized, the hardest question anyone could have asked about that particular design choice — the one point in the proposal where she had pushed furthest from the conventional solution, where the vision and the practical constraints were in the most interesting tension.
She answered it. Completely, technically, without hedging. She had done the consultation. She had the structural engineer's report. She knew exactly why the solution worked.
When she finished, there was a brief silence.
Arjun wrote something on his legal pad.
"Thank you," he said. And looked down again.
The Head of Development smiled at Nisha. "We'll be in touch within the week. Thank you for coming in."
Nisha gathered her materials. She was almost at the door when the project director called after her with a follow-up question about phasing timelines, and she stopped and turned and answered it, and in doing so found herself standing three steps from Arjun, who had risen from his chair to refill his water glass from the credenza along the wall.
He moved past her.
Close enough that she could have reached out. Close enough that she was aware, with a physical specificity she resented, of exactly how little space there was between them.
He didn't look at her.
And then, just as he was past her, moving back toward his chair, he said it — quiet, level, directed at no one in particular, or perhaps at the water glass in his hand, or perhaps at the air between them which had its own complicated history:
"You look well."
Three words.
Nisha finished her answer to the project director. She heard her own voice complete the sentence about phasing, transition to the handover document, offer to send supplementary materials by end of week. She heard it all happen correctly, in the right order, in the right register.
She did not look at him.
She said goodbye to the room and walked out.
---
The elevator took a long time to arrive.
Nisha stood in front of the closed doors and looked at the small illuminated number above them and counted floors descending and did not think about anything.
The doors opened. She stepped in. The doors closed.
She was alone.
She put her back against the wall of the elevator — the smooth, cool, indifferent wall — and she closed her eyes.
She gave herself the distance between the thirtieth floor and the twenty-second. Eight floors. She had timed it once on the way up. Approximately forty seconds.
She used them.
Not to cry — she was not going to cry in a corporate elevator, not today, not over this. But to feel the full weight of it for forty seconds, in the privacy of a box of glass and steel that was not affiliated with anyone and owed her nothing. The way he had said her name across a corridor as though she were a stranger. The specific quality of his silence through twenty-five minutes of her work. The three words that had been either mercy or cruelty and she genuinely could not tell which.
Twenty-second floor.
She opened her eyes.
The woman in the elevator's mirrored panel looked back at her — composed, professional, portfolio case at the correct angle. A little pale, perhaps. Nothing that couldn't be attributed to the lighting.
Nisha straightened her shoulders.
By the time the lobby arrived, she was ready.
---
Aanya was already asleep when the email came.
Nisha was at the kitchen table with the remains of a dinner she had eaten mechanically and a cup of tea gone cold beside her laptop, going through the Hendricks final invoice — routine work, the kind that required just enough attention to keep the mind occupied without demanding anything from the part of her that was too tired to give.
The notification appeared at 9:23 PM.
She read the subject line. Read it again.
*Malhotra Hotel Group — Celestia Project: Studio Selection Confirmation.*
She opened it.
The language was formal and efficient and said, in three short paragraphs, that Nisha Sharma Design Studio had been selected as the lead creative firm for the Celestia interior design project. Contracts would follow within forty-eight hours. The project kickoff meeting was scheduled for the following Monday. Point of contact for logistical matters would be the project director. All creative direction and final approvals would run through the office of the CEO.
Nisha read that last line twice.
All creative direction and final approvals would run through the office of the CEO.
She sat back in her chair.
From the bedroom, she could hear Aanya's small, even breathing through the monitor on the counter — the sound that had been the steadiest thing in her life for eighteen months, the sound she had calibrated her entire existence around, the sound that meant *she is safe, she is here, you are doing the thing that matters most.*
She looked at the monitor. Then at the email. Then at the monitor again.
She had won the contract. She had walked into that building and stood at the end of that table and done her best work under the most complicated circumstances of her professional life, and she had won. The money would keep the studio running. It would cover the crack in the bathroom ceiling and Aanya's school fees and the new printer cartridge and six months of breathing room on top of that.
She should feel relieved. She did feel relieved. Underneath everything else, the relief was there — solid, real, the specific relief of a problem with a practical solution that had just been solved.
But above it, in the part of her mind that would not be quiet:
*You look well.*
Three words. No emotion. The same voice that had once said her name in the dark like it was the only word that mattered, reduced to the most neutral possible acknowledgment of her continued existence.
Nisha picked up her cold tea, realized it was cold, and set it back down.
She was going to go back into that building next Monday. And the Monday after that. For months, she was going to be in the same rooms as Arjun Malhotra, and she was going to produce the best work of her career, and she was going to keep Aanya's existence as carefully hidden as she had kept it for eighteen months, and she was not going to let three words from a corridor undo two years of careful reconstruction.
She was going to be fine.
She opened a reply to the confirmation email and typed: *Dear Mr. Vikram, thank you for the confirmation. We look forward to beginning the Celestia project. Please send the contract at your earliest convenience.*
She read it over. Changed *We look forward* to *Nisha Sharma Design Studio looks forward.* More professional. Cleaner distance.
She pressed send.
Then she closed the laptop, washed her cup, turned off the kitchen light, and went to stand in the doorway of Aanya's room for a moment — the ritual she had performed every night since her daughter was born, the thirty seconds of watching that cost nothing and meant everything.
Aanya slept with complete conviction, both arms flung wide, her face turned toward the nightlight.
The curve of her jaw in the soft light was a thing Nisha had spent eighteen months learning to see as entirely her own.
Tonight, in the particular vulnerability of a day that had taken more than she had budgeted for, she let herself see it differently for just a moment.
Then she turned off the hall light and went to bed.
Monday was coming regardless.
You've reached the end of this chapter
