The building knew something was coming before Nisha did.
She noticed it in the small things first — the way the lobby staff moved with slightly more precision than usual, the fresh arrangement of flowers at the entrance that had not been there yesterday, the project director's assistant circulating through the floors with a checklist and the focused energy of someone preparing a space to be seen rather than simply worked in.
She asked, during the morning team meeting, what the occasion was.
"Periodic family review," the project director said, with the practiced neutrality of someone who had managed many such visits. "The Malhotra family likes to walk the project at key milestones. Entirely routine."
Nisha noted this and returned to the tile specification she had been reviewing.
Routine. Of course.
She spent the morning on the third floor with the decorative plasterwork team, working through the ceiling detail for the corridor connecting the east and west wings — a section she had been wanting to resolve in person rather than on paper, because the proportions of it behaved differently in the actual space than they had in the drawings. This was always the way. The drawing was the intention; the site was the argument.
By eleven-thirty she had what she needed and was heading back to her office when she passed the second-floor material room and remembered she had wanted to look again at the velvet samples for the suite headboards — a decision she had been circling for a week, unable to commit.
She went in.
---
The room was narrow and well-lit, lined on three sides with shelving that held the project's material library: fabric samples, stone finishes, wood veneers, metal trims, everything indexed and ordered with the thoroughness of a project this size required. Nisha moved along the fabric section methodically, pulling samples and holding them against the reference board she had brought.
She was comparing two weights of a deep charcoal velvet when she heard them in the corridor.
Arjun's voice first — the particular register he used when he was guiding someone through a space, explaining rather than directing, the slight modulation that meant he was speaking to someone he was careful with. Then other voices: the project director, a contractor she recognised, and beneath all of that a second woman's voice, older, with the quality of someone who was accustomed to being listened to and therefore never raised it.
Nisha set the velvet samples down.
They came into the doorway of the material room — Arjun first, then the project director, then two people she had not seen in this building before.
The woman was perhaps sixty-five, and she wore that age with the specific authority of someone who had decided at some point that elegance was a discipline rather than an accident. Ivory silk sari, the border a deep gold. Silver hair drawn back with complete composure. The kind of bearing that filled a room without requiring it to be announced.
Beside her, slightly behind: Sia Kapoor. Navy dress, pearl earrings, a smile that was entirely correct for the occasion.
Nisha stood at the far end of the room with a charcoal velvet sample in one hand and the measured stillness of someone who had learned, in the past month, to be very good at not reacting visibly.
Arjun's eyes found her in the moment he entered — the automatic scan of a man who had become, she noticed, aware of her location in shared spaces. A fraction of a pause. Then he continued into the room, directing his mother's attention to the stone sample wall on the left.
He did not introduce her.
This was reasonable. This was a site visit, not a social occasion. She was the lead designer, not a guest. There was no protocol that required introduction.
But Savita Malhotra had already looked at her.
It was brief — the kind of glance that could have been a simple survey of the room's occupants, the natural visual accounting of a person entering a new space. Three seconds at most. Then the older woman's attention returned to the stone samples her son was describing.
Except.
In that three seconds, something had moved through Savita Malhotra's expression that was not the neutral registration of a stranger. It was faster than recognition and quieter than surprise — the specific adjustment of someone encountering something they had thought about but not expected to encounter here, today, in this form.
Nisha had seen it clearly.
She put the velvet sample back on its shelf and returned her attention to the reference board.
---
The group moved on after several minutes — the project director leading them toward the suite corridor, the contractor answering questions, Sia Kapoor maintaining her careful position just behind Arjun's left shoulder, the whole assembly moving with the organised momentum of a formal visit.
Nisha waited until the corridor was quiet.
Then she exhaled, slowly, and reached for the next velvet sample on the shelf, and told herself that she had imagined the quality of that look. That she was pattern-matching where there was no pattern. That Savita Malhotra was a woman who looked at everything with attention, and the attention Nisha had received was no different from the attention the stone samples had received.
She told herself this for approximately twelve minutes.
Then the door of the material room opened again, and Savita Malhotra came in alone.
She moved to the fabric section with the unhurried confidence of someone who had decided she wanted to look at something and saw no reason to rush. She examined a silk sample near the door. Then a linen. Then, gradually, with the natural drift of someone following their interest, she came to stand two shelving units away from Nisha.
"The suite textiles," she said, to the shelf rather than to Nisha, in the tone of genuine aesthetic interest. "The selections are very considered. I've been looking at the reference boards — there's a coherence to the palette that's unusual for a project this scale."
Nisha looked at her.
"Thank you," she said.
"I reviewed your portfolio before the selection was finalised." Savita turned slightly, enough to include Nisha in the conversation without making it a confrontation. Her eyes were dark and precise. "The Pondicherry property particularly. The way you handled the courtyard transition."
"That was a project I enjoyed," Nisha said. Carefully. The way you are careful when you cannot yet see the full shape of something.
"It shows." Savita moved one shelf closer, examining a velvet sample with apparent absorption. "Good work always shows its enjoyment. My son chose well."
A pause.
Nisha said nothing.
"You're based in the city?" Savita asked.
"Yes."
"Family here?"
"My mother." The answer that was complete and true and omitted everything. "I live on my own."
Savita nodded. She ran her fingers along the edge of a fabric sample — the gesture of someone for whom texture was information. "On your own," she said. "This kind of project demands complete availability. Long hours. The kind of commitment that's difficult to maintain when one has — competing obligations."
The words were perfectly ordinary. The rhythm beneath them was not.
Nisha looked at Savita Malhotra's profile — the elegant line of it, the composure that had not shifted by a degree since the woman entered the room — and understood that she was receiving a message. Not a threat. Nothing so declarable. A message wrapped in the kind of courtesy that made it impossible to object to directly, delivered by a woman who had spent decades becoming very skilled at delivering exactly this kind.
She thought of Aanya sorting blocks on a Saturday morning. Of the nightlight in the shape of a crescent moon. Of Deepa's calm voice on the phone: *she went down at eight-fifteen.*
"I manage," Nisha said.
Savita looked at her then — directly, for the first time. The gaze was not unkind. That was the thing that made it most unsettling: it was not unkind.
"I'm sure you do," she said. "You seem very capable."
She set the fabric sample back in its place.
"The velvet," she said, gesturing toward the charcoal sample Nisha had been holding earlier. "For the suite headboards, I imagine? The weight is right. But the colour — have you considered going slightly warmer? A very deep aubergine, perhaps, rather than a pure charcoal. It would hold the light differently in the evening."
And that was it. The conversation shifted as smoothly as water finding its level, back to fabric and light and the suite headboards, and Savita asked two more questions that were entirely about the project, and Nisha answered them, and by the time Arjun appeared in the doorway two minutes later there was nothing in the room that could have been described as anything other than two women discussing textiles.
---
He looked at the scene.
His mother, examining a fabric sample. Nisha, holding a reference board. The specific quality of a conversation just concluded — the particular atmospheric residue of an exchange that had covered more ground than its surface suggested.
Nisha watched him read the room.
He was good at it — the same quality of observation she had noticed in the conference room, the ability to process a situation's components quickly and form a reliable picture. She watched him do it now: the slight assessment behind his eyes, the moment of recalibration.
"The team is waiting," he said to his mother. His voice was even. His hand rested briefly on the back of the nearest chair — not touching his mother, but close. A presence beside her.
"Of course." Savita set the sample back with the care she gave everything. She smiled at Nisha — warm, complete, the smile of a woman who had conducted herself perfectly throughout. "It was a pleasure. The project is in very good hands."
"Thank you," Nisha said.
She watched them leave. Arjun's hand moved from the chair back to his side. He did not look at Nisha as he guided his mother through the door.
But he paused at the threshold — one step behind his mother, facing forward — for exactly the length of time it took to make a decision.
Then they were gone.
Nisha stood in the material room alone.
The fabric samples were exactly where they had been an hour ago. The reference board was in her hand. The velvet decision remained unmade.
She looked at the charcoal sample. Then at the shelf where the deeper, warmer tones were stored.
She thought about aubergine.
She thought about: *competing obligations.*
---
She was shutting down her laptop at six-fifteen when she heard the knock.
Not the project director's brisk rap. Not Vikram's efficient double tap. A single knock — the knock of someone who is not entirely sure they should be knocking.
Arjun stood in the doorway with his hands in his pockets and the expression she had learned to read as his version of uncertain: the slight tension around his jaw, the quality of stillness that meant he was managing something.
"What did she talk to you about?" he asked.
Nisha considered him for a moment. The question was direct in a way that most of his questions weren't — no professional framing, no approach through the material of the work.
"Fabric," she said.
A pause.
"That's all?"
"The suite textiles. The velvet selection. She suggested aubergine over charcoal." Nisha closed her laptop. "She has good instincts."
He looked at her for a moment with the focused attention that she had stopped being able to treat as merely professional, because it no longer was and they both knew it.
"She does," he said. Something in his voice that she couldn't quite place — not quite an apology, not quite a warning. Something in between. "Among other things."
Nisha looked back at him steadily.
"Good night, Arjun," she said.
It was the first time she had used his name.
Neither of them acknowledged this. But the air in the room changed by some small and unmistakable degree.
He said: "Good night."
And left.
Nisha sat for a moment in the quiet office.
Then she picked up her bag, turned off the light, and walked to the elevator, and thought about a woman who looked at things very carefully, and a door that had been opened one centimetre wider than she had intended, and the specific texture of a warning delivered in the language of interior design.
She thought about aubergine.
She thought she might use it after all.
