She had chosen the aubergine.
This was the first thing Nisha thought when she sat down at her desk on Friday morning — not the decision itself, which she had made the previous evening with the quiet certainty that good decisions sometimes arrived with, but the fact of it. The colour on the board. The way it would hold light in the evening hours, warmer and deeper than the charcoal would have been, doing something specific to the suite atmosphere that she had been trying to articulate for two weeks and had finally found.
She had not thought, making the decision, about the woman who had suggested it. She had thought about the light.
This was what she told herself, arranging her pencils in their order, opening the reference file, beginning the morning.
The suite palette board was nearly complete. She added the aubergine swatch to its position — upper right, anchoring the warm end of the scheme — and stepped back to look at the whole. It was good. It was, she thought, the best colour decision she had made on this project, and the project was full of good colour decisions, and she was going to focus on that and only that for as long as the morning allowed.
Her phone rang at nine forty-seven.
Priya. Video call, not message — which meant something that required a face.
Nisha answered.
---
Priya's expression was the careful one. The one she wore when she had information she was uncertain about delivering, which meant she had already decided to deliver it and was managing the manner rather than the decision.
"I'm going to show you something," Priya said, without preamble. "And I want you to remember that I am showing you because I think you should see it, not because I think it means anything definitive."
"Priya."
"I mean it. Context matters."
"Show me."
Priya turned her phone. On the screen: a photograph, sourced from one of the society pages that covered the city's philanthropic circuit — the kind of coverage that existed in a register Nisha had never occupied and had stopped paying attention to years ago.
A gala. The Malhotra Foundation's annual charitable event, held the previous evening at a venue Nisha recognised — a heritage property in the old city, the kind of space that existed specifically to lend grandeur to occasions that wanted to be remembered.
Arjun in black tie. She had seen him in suits every day for five weeks and thought she had accounted for all the versions of him that she needed to account for. She had not, apparently, accounted for this one.
Beside him: Sia Kapoor. A deep red dress, the kind of choice that was both bold and precise. Her posture the composed, polished posture that Nisha had observed at the site visit — the posture of a woman who had been trained, or had trained herself, to occupy formal occasions without visible effort.
Arjun's hand was at the small of her back. Light — barely there, the kind of placement that a photographer captures in the half-second before a posed shot, the instinctive positioning that happens before the formal arrangement.
The caption beneath the photograph speculated, in the particular language of society pages that framed everything as inevitable, about the Malhotra heir and the Kapoor family's eldest daughter.
"Okay," Nisha said.
"Nisha —"
"Thank you for telling me." Her voice was the right temperature. She was paying close attention to her voice. "I'll talk to you later."
She ended the call.
She looked at the aubergine swatch on the palette board.
Then she opened her specification file and continued working.
---
The Wednesday review was at two.
Arjun arrived at one fifty-eight — the precision that she had stopped noting because it had become simply a fact about him, like the way he held his pen or the specific quality of his attention when he was genuinely thinking rather than performing consideration.
He sat down. Opened his file. The afternoon light came through the window at the angle it always came at this hour, and the room looked the way it always looked, and he looked the way he always looked, and Nisha looked at her drawings and thought: nothing has changed. This is the same room it was last Wednesday. He is the same person. You are the same person.
The photograph existed in a different category from this room. The photograph was the world outside — the world of galas and society pages and family arrangements that had been in motion long before she walked into this building and would continue to be in motion regardless of anything that happened in this room on Wednesday afternoons.
She knew this. She had known this from the beginning. She had built the separation deliberately, maintained it carefully, and it had worked well enough until nine forty-seven this morning when it had become somewhat less structural than she had been treating it.
She reviewed the milestone progress. He asked two questions. She answered them. The work accumulated between them with its usual quiet logic.
Then he looked at the suite palette board.
She watched him see the aubergine — the moment he registered the change, the brief assessment of it. He looked at it the way he looked at things he was deciding about: thoroughly, without comment, giving the thing the full weight of his attention before arriving at a conclusion.
"Good decision," he said.
Two words. Nothing in them that required a response about anything other than the colour.
"It holds the light better in the evening," Nisha said. "The charcoal would have gone flat after seven o'clock."
He looked at her for a moment. She looked at the board.
The technical explanation was accurate. It was also not the complete truth of why she had chosen it, and she suspected he knew that, and she also suspected that neither of them was going to address what they both knew, which was entirely correct and exactly how it should be.
"The contractor will need final confirmation by Monday," he said.
"They'll have it," she said.
They moved on.
---
An hour later, they were finishing.
Arjun was making his final notes — the summary of decisions and action items he always produced at the end of each review, the document that Vikram would convert into formal minutes by end of day. Nisha was organising her drawings into their sequence for the week ahead.
His phone, face-up on the table between their materials, lit with an incoming call.
He glanced at it. Something shifted in the set of his jaw — slight, the kind of shift she had learned to read as the adjustment between his professional self and whatever version of himself his family required. He let it ring twice before picking it up.
"Maa." His voice was different — not softer exactly, but less constructed. The particular tone of a person speaking to someone in front of whom certain performances were not available. "Haan. Main jaanta hoon — tonight, yes." A pause, listening. "I said I know, Maa. I'll be there."
He ended the call.
The phone went face-down.
He looked up and found Nisha looking at her drawings, which she was, and had been, with complete professional attention.
Except that she was also aware — with the specific, unhelpful awareness she had been carrying for five weeks — of every small thing: the tiredness in his voice when he'd said *main jaanta hoon.* The way he had looked at the phone for a half-second after ending the call, the expression of a man who understood his obligations completely and found them, at this particular moment, somewhat heavier than usual.
The look he gave her then was brief and unreadable and over before it properly began.
"Next Wednesday," he said.
He gathered his materials and left.
The door closed.
Nisha sat in the room that was now empty and looked at the aubergine swatch and thought about a photograph taken last night at a gala she had not attended and would never attend, and a hand placed at the small of someone's back in the half-second before a photographer asked people to arrange themselves for a shot.
She thought about *main jaanta hoon* — I know. Said in the tone of someone who does know, who has always known, who is making peace, incrementally, with the shape of what he knows.
She stood up.
She put on her jacket. One arm, then the other. She picked up her bag. She collected the drawings in their proper order. She turned off the desk lamp.
Each thing in sequence. Each thing carefully.
This was how you moved through a day when you could not afford to stop moving — not quickly, which invited the kind of momentum that became difficult to control, but steadily, one deliberate action at a time. She had learned this in the months after Aanya was born, when the grief and the fear and the love had all existed at the same volume simultaneously and the only navigable path was through the next immediate thing.
Get up. Feed her. Burp her. Put her down. Sleep when she sleeps.
Pick up the drawings. Turn off the lamp. Walk to the elevator.
She was good at this. She had practice.
---
The elevator descended in its usual unhurried way.
Nisha watched the numbers change and did not think about galas or photographs or the specific weight that enters a person's voice when they say *I know* to their mother about an evening they have agreed to attend.
Her phone buzzed.
Her mother: *Free tonight? Aanya is asking for you. Well — she said "mama" three times and then pointed at the door, which I'm choosing to interpret as asking.*
Nisha read this twice.
Then she read it a third time, and something in her chest that had been held carefully in place for most of the afternoon loosened by precisely the amount it needed to.
She typed back: *Coming now. I'll pick up dinner on the way.*
The lobby arrived.
She walked through it — past the security desk, the night guard, the revolving door — and out into the evening air, which was warm and carried the smell of jasmine from the planter near the entrance and the sound of the city doing its Friday evening things, all of it entirely indifferent to the interior life of the woman walking through it.
Indifference was, sometimes, a relief.
She thought about Aanya pointing at the door and saying *mama.* About the specific weight of a small person who wanted her and would not be complicated about wanting her and did not require her to be anything other than present.
She walked faster.
Behind her, the tower rose into the darkening sky — lit, immense, entirely certain of its own significance.
She did not look back at it.
She was going to pick up her daughter and have dinner at her mother's table and read the second story that was always demanded, and in the morning the world would be exactly as large and complicated as it was right now, and she would navigate it the same way she always had — one careful, deliberate thing at a time.
But tonight: her daughter pointing at the door.
That was enough.
That was, in fact, more than enough.
