She had not meant to open it.
The file she was looking for was a reference document from an earlier project — a specification she had used for a similar stone finish and wanted to cross-check against the Celestia lobby material. It was somewhere in the older folders, the ones she had migrated across three laptops and never properly organised, the digital equivalent of a drawer that held everything because it had been easier, each time, to add than to sort.
She found the specification. And beside it, in the same folder, a photograph she had not looked at in two years.
A rooftop. A different city — the kind of city that existed in a different register from this one, smaller and slower and lit in the evenings with a warmth that this city's skyline didn't quite replicate. The photograph had been taken by someone else, at some point during an evening she remembered as uncomplicated and good. She was laughing at something outside the frame. Her hair was different. She looked, she thought, like someone who had not yet learned to be careful.
She sat for a long time looking at it.
Then the evening opened up behind her like a door without a latch, and she was somewhere else entirely.
---
Two and a half years ago, the world had made sense in the specific way it makes sense when you are inside something real and don't yet know it is going to end.
It was not a dramatic kind of sense. It was the ordinary kind — the kind built from small accumulated facts: she knew he took his coffee without sugar, he knew she always sketched by hand before opening the software, they had developed the particular shorthand of two people who had stopped needing to explain themselves to each other about most things. He had told his family about her. Not in the way of a formal announcement — in the quieter way of someone integrating a new fact into an existing structure, mentioning her name in contexts where names got mentioned, making space.
She had believed in the space he was making.
This was what she returned to, now, in the lamplight of a twenty-eighth-floor office two and a half years later: that she had believed in it completely, without the reservation she usually kept in place, the careful part of herself that she had learned, from early experience, to maintain. She had put it down. For the first time in a long time, she had simply put it down.
She had thought that was what it meant to trust someone.
She had not yet learned what it meant to be wrong about that.
---
The Monday had begun like other Mondays.
She was in her studio — the small one she had been renting for a year, the one with the good north light and the landlord who didn't mind her working late — when the call came. Not from him. From a number she didn't recognise, a woman's voice, pleasant and unhurried, asking if she would be available to meet that afternoon. The Malhotra residence. Mrs. Savita Malhotra would like to speak with her.
She had gone. Of course she had gone. This was his mother. This was, she had thought, the next thing.
The room she was shown into was beautiful in the way that rooms are beautiful when money and taste have been applied together over a long time — not the aggressive beauty of new wealth but the settled beauty of a family that had been comfortable for generations and had stopped needing to announce it. Savita Malhotra sat in a chair that suited her exactly, in clothes that suited her exactly, with the composed precision of a woman who had spent decades making sure that the rooms she occupied reflected her intentions perfectly.
She had offered tea. Nisha had accepted.
The conversation had moved through pleasantries with the smooth efficiency of someone who used pleasantries as a runway rather than a destination. And then Savita had set down her cup and said, in the same warm and measured voice she used for everything:
"You care about my son. I can see that. And I believe he has developed — feelings, for you. That is not in question."
Nisha had waited.
"What I want you to understand," Savita continued, "is that Arjun has had responsibilities to this family since long before he met you. There are commitments that were made — for him, with him, in ways that are not simple to revisit. He understands this. He has always understood this." A pause, gentle and precise. "There are things you cannot give him, my dear. Not because of any failing of yours. Simply because of what his life requires."
Nisha had looked at the tea in her cup.
She had thought: I will ask him. Tonight, I will ask him directly and he will tell me this is not true.
She had gone home and called him.
He had not answered.
---
Three hours.
She knew the exact duration because she had watched it accumulate — on the clock on the kitchen wall, on her phone screen each time she checked, on the slow movement of the afternoon light across the floor of her apartment as the day ended and the evening began without him calling back.
She called twice. She sent one message: *can you call me when you're free.* Then she sat with the phone on the table in front of her and waited in the way that felt, even as she was doing it, like the worst possible use of herself.
At half past seven, someone knocked.
Not him. A man she had never seen — neat, professional, the manner of someone performing a task he had been given clear instructions for. He handed her an envelope. He said good evening. He left before she had fully processed what had happened.
The envelope had her name on it, written in a hand she didn't recognise.
Inside: a single page. Printed on Malhotra Group letterhead. The language was formal, precise, the language of official documents — she would later understand it had been drafted by someone who knew exactly how to write something that could not be disputed. At the top: her name. At the bottom: a signature she knew. Between them, in the measured vocabulary of corporate closure: the termination of a consultancy arrangement, effective immediately, with compensation as noted.
The amount was specific. Not small. The kind of specificity that communicated: this was considered, this was deliberate, this is what your absence is worth.
Nisha read it standing at her door.
She read it again at the kitchen table.
She read it a third time on the floor, because at some point between the table and the wall her legs had made a decision her mind hadn't caught up with yet.
*Consultancy arrangement.*
Not: the woman I told my family about. Not: the person I made space for. A consultancy arrangement. With compensation on termination. Handled, as all such arrangements were, through the proper channels, by a man who had not answered his phone for three hours and had sent a stranger with an envelope instead.
She sat on the floor for a long time.
The city outside her window continued — indifferent, ongoing, entirely uninterested in the interior life of the woman sitting on the floor of a small apartment with a piece of paper in her hand that had just rearranged the architecture of everything she had believed.
She thought about the space he had been making.
She thought: there was never any space. I was watching a performance of space.
She sat with that until it stopped feeling like a thought and started feeling like a fact.
---
He called at ten forty-seven.
One call. She watched his name on the screen and felt something move through her that was not simple enough to be called any single emotion — it was several things at once, layered and contradictory and all of them equally real. She wanted to answer. She wanted to not answer. She wanted to ask him what the piece of paper meant and she wanted to never hear the answer.
She did not answer.
The call ended.
She waited.
He did not call again.
She sat with the phone in her hand and watched the screen go dark, and she thought: one call. He called once and when she didn't answer he stopped. And she understood, in the particular cold clarity that arrives after something breaks — not while it is breaking, only after — that one call was its own answer. A person who needed her to answer would have called again. A person who understood what the envelope had done, who wanted to undo it, who had not sent it willingly — that person would have called until she picked up.
One call.
Then silence.
She had her answer.
---
The office came back to her gradually — the lamp on the desk, the drawings in their ordered stacks, the city outside the window doing its late-evening things.
Nisha sat for a moment in the quiet.
She was aware, as she had not let herself be aware in two and a half years, of the full weight of that night. She had buried it efficiently — not in denial but in the practical necessity of continuing. There had been too much to do: the studio to build, and then, several weeks later, a discovery that had redirected everything and made the burying both more urgent and more complete.
But she was sitting in his building. She had been sitting in his building for six weeks. And the careful burial had been, she now understood, somewhat shallower than she had believed.
She closed the photograph. Closed the laptop.
She put on her jacket and collected her things and turned off the desk lamp, and the room went dark around her in the way rooms go dark when there is no one left in them to need light.
In the corridor outside, she passed the window that looked toward the east face of the building — the angle that showed, if you knew where to look, the corner office on the thirtieth floor.
The light was on.
He was there. Working late, as she had been working late, in the same building, separated by two floors and two and a half years and a piece of paper she still had somewhere, in a folder she had not opened since the month Aanya was born.
She looked at the light for a moment.
And for the first time — not while she was being careful, not while she was managing, but in the unguarded moment of a woman standing alone in a dark corridor after a long day — she let herself ask the question she had not once asked in two and a half years.
Not: why did he do it.
Not: how could he.
Just: *he called once. Only once. Why only once?*
The elevator arrived.
She stepped in.
The doors closed.
The question stayed behind — or she thought it did. But it was still there when she reached the lobby, still there when she walked out into the night air, still there in the taxi on the way home, quiet and persistent and shaped, she realised, not like an accusation.
Shaped like the beginning of a doubt.
