The room was the fullest it had been.
Nisha had grown accustomed, over the past seven weeks, to the particular scale of the Celestia project as she experienced it daily — the conference rooms, the site visits, the Wednesday reviews that had become the fixed point around which the rest of her week organised itself. She had grown accustomed to the project as a thing she moved through in manageable pieces.
She had not, until this morning, seen all of its pieces in the same room at the same time.
Thirty people. The full contractor roster, the construction leads, the finance team, the development committee, the design team — Priya beside her, both of them with their folders open and their professional selves fully assembled. Three decades of combined construction experience at one end of the table. At the other end: Arjun, in the chair he always occupied at the head of things, with the specific quality of stillness that meant he was about to speak.
Nisha looked at the room and understood, in a way that the past seven weeks had somehow deferred, exactly what she had agreed to.
---
"Eight months," Arjun said.
He said it the way he said important things — without emphasis, as though the weight of the words was sufficient and did not require additional force. The timeline was on the screen behind him: phased, colour-coded, precise. Mobilisation through to grand opening, with the three properties mapped in parallel, their critical paths overlapping in the middle months like the fingers of two hands interlaced.
He moved through the overview with the efficiency of someone who had prepared thoroughly and respected the time of the people in the room. Milestone by milestone, dependency by dependency, the full architecture of the next eight months assembled itself in the air above the conference table.
At some point in the middle of it, his gaze moved across the room in the ordinary way of a speaker covering his audience — and when it reached her side of the table it paused for exactly the duration of one heartbeat before continuing.
No one noticed.
She noticed.
Eight months. She did the arithmetic she had already done, twice, since the timeline had arrived in her inbox last week, but which felt different now — performed in a room with thirty people in it, with the physical reality of the project surrounding her on all sides. Eight months from today was the first week of the following year. Aanya, by then, would be two years and three months old. The studio contract ran the full duration. There was no provision for early exit that did not carry significant financial penalty and reputational consequence.
She had known all of this.
Knowing it in a room with thirty people while the man who didn't know he had a daughter presented the timeline of the next eight months of both their lives was an experience of a different order entirely.
She wrote something in her notebook. She was not certain, later, what it was.
---
The large meeting broke at eleven into its component working groups, and Nisha found herself in the smaller conference room with Arjun and the project director, the milestone map spread across the table in its full detail.
Here, at close range, the eight months became specific.
The project director walked them through the phase dependencies — which decisions gated which construction sequences, where the design approvals needed to land to keep the build on schedule, the points at which delay in one workstream would cascade into others. It was good project management, clearly thought through, and Nisha engaged with it fully because the work was real and required her full attention and because full attention was the most reliable way she knew to be present in a room without being overwhelmed by it.
She was good at this. She had been good at it for two years.
The project director stepped out at eleven-forty to take a call from the lead contractor, with the apology of someone who expected to be back in five minutes.
Nisha and Arjun were left with the milestone map.
They worked through it — the natural continuation of what had been in progress, no reason to stop simply because the third person in the room had temporarily left. She asked about the phase two material delivery window; he had the answer. He raised a question about the design freeze date for the penthouse suites; she had the answer. The map accumulated annotations in both their handwriting, which was, she noted without lingering on it, not the first time their handwriting had appeared together on the same document.
She was marking the critical path for the atrium installation when she became aware of something she had been noticing for several minutes without allowing herself to name: they were planning a future. Not resolving a present problem, not reviewing past decisions — planning, specifically and in detail, for months that had not yet happened. Every milestone she marked was a point at which she would be here, in this building, in the same project, in the same orbit as this man.
She marked the atrium milestone.
She marked the one after it.
---
They reached the final phase — the grand opening preparation block, tinted a deep blue on the map, stretching across the last six weeks of the project like a long exhalation.
"This phase is intensive," Arjun said. He was looking at the map, not at her. "On-site presence will need to be near-constant in the final four weeks. And there are the other two properties — the phase three work in the northern locations will require travel. Probably two separate trips of three to four days each."
Nisha looked at the blue block on the map.
That was month seven. Aanya would be twenty-two months old. Old enough that three or four days away would be felt — by both of them. She would need to talk to her mother. She would need to expand Deepa's hours. She would need to plan, carefully, around the requirements of a project whose lead did not know that his designer had a child, and could not know, and the planning would be invisible to him because it had to be.
"Understood," she said. She wrote the travel requirement in her notebook. Her handwriting was even. "I'll factor that into my studio's scheduling."
He looked at her briefly — the quality of look that had become familiar over seven weeks, the one that contained more than its surface.
"Good," he said. And returned to the map.
The project director came back at eleven fifty-five, and the working session resumed its three-person shape, and the morning finished in the way mornings finished — with action items and next steps and the satisfying sense of a plan that had been made well.
---
It was twelve-thirty when the project director left for a lunch meeting, gathering his materials with the efficient energy of a man whose calendar did not allow for lingering.
Nisha began rolling the milestone map.
"Nisha."
She stopped.
Not Ms. Sharma. Not the careful professional address that had been the form of his speech to her since the thirtieth floor, seven weeks ago, with the portfolio case and the practiced composure and the elevator she had ridden down alone afterward.
Just: her name. Two syllables, in his voice, in a room that had gone quiet.
She looked up.
He was standing at the end of the table with his folder in his hand and the expression she had come to recognise as his version of unguarded — not the blankness of his professional register, not the careful management of the man who ran rooms, but the look of someone who had decided, briefly, to say a true thing.
"Eight months is a long commitment," he said. "For both sides." A pause — the considered pause, not the managed one. "If there is any reason — any reason at all — that makes this untenable for you, I need to know now. Before we're further in."
She looked at him.
Not at the milestone map. Not at the folder in his hand or the timeline on the wall. At him — at the specific quality of what he was doing, which was offering her a door and hoping, she understood with complete clarity, that she would not walk through it.
This was not a contractual question. It was dressed as one, carefully, because he was a man who dressed things carefully. But it was not that.
She thought about eight months. About Aanya and the travel requirements and the Wednesday reviews and the question that had been living in her since the dark corridor two nights ago, shaped like a doubt rather than an accusation. She thought about the photograph on the rooftop, and the floor of her old apartment, and one phone call that had not been followed by a second.
She thought about the aubergine on the suite palette board, and a sketch in the upper left corner of a wall, and coffee made correctly without being asked.
"There's no reason," she said.
Something settled in his expression — too brief to be read completely, but present.
"Good," he said. The same word he had used about the travel scheduling. Meaning, both times, something considerably larger than the word itself.
He picked up his jacket.
At the door, he paused — not turning fully, the half-pause of something said to the room rather than to a person in it: "Eight months ago I wouldn't have predicted sitting in that room today."
He left before she could decide whether to respond.
The room was empty.
The milestone map was still half-rolled in her hands.
She stood there for a moment — with the map and the empty room and the weight of a sentence that had not been about project planning — and then she finished rolling it, and put it in its tube, and turned off the light, and went back to work.
---
Aanya was already asleep when Nisha got home.
This happened sometimes on the long days — Deepa managing the evening routine with the calm competence that had made her indispensable, Aanya going down without the second story because the day had tired her out before her mother arrived to read it. Nisha stood in the doorway of the small bedroom and looked at her daughter in the nightlight's warmth.
Aanya slept the way she always slept — arms flung wide, face turned toward the crescent moon of the nightlight, the yellow elephant blanket rucked up around her middle in the way that meant she had been moving before sleep finally caught her. Her breathing was the slow, deep breathing of complete unconsciousness, the breathing of someone who had used everything they had and was now restoring it without reservation.
The left-side furrow was there even in sleep — the small crease of concentration, present even when there was nothing to concentrate on, as though it was simply part of the architecture of her face.
Nisha sat down on the floor.
Her spot. The floor of this doorway, in this particular quality of nightlight, with this particular sound of breathing — this was the thing that had held her upright on the hardest nights of the past two years, the fixed point around which everything else orbited and to which she always, eventually, returned.
She sat there and let the day settle around her.
Eight months. The milestone map. *Nisha* without Ms. The half-turned pause at the door: *eight months ago I wouldn't have predicted this.*
And underneath all of it, patient and persistent: *he called once. Only once. Why?*
She had spent two and a half years not asking that question. She had buried it under the practical necessities of continuing — the studio, the pregnancy, the early months, the slow construction of a life that was stable and sufficient and entirely hers. The burying had been necessary. She did not regret it.
But she was sitting on the floor of her daughter's room, and across the city the light on the fortieth floor was either on or not on, and she had said *there is no reason* to a man who had given her a genuine door and she had meant it.
And meaning it was, she understood now — sitting in the nightlight with her back against the doorframe and her daughter breathing in the dark — its own kind of answer.
Not to the past. She was not ready for the past.
But to the next eight months.
Aanya shifted in her sleep, made a small sound of renegotiation with some dream, and settled again.
Nisha watched her.
She thought: whatever is coming, it is already coming. The door I didn't walk through today is still a door I chose not to walk through. And that choice, made in a room with a milestone map and a man who used my name without the distance of a title — that choice has a shape to it.
She stayed on the floor until her daughter's breathing had slowed back to its deepest register.
Then she got up, turned off the hall light, and went to face the rest of the evening.
Behind her, in the small room, Aanya slept on — entirely unaware that her mother had just made a decision that would change the shape of everything.
As she always was.
As she would not, Nisha thought, always be.
