The coffee was already there.
This was the thing Nisha noticed first, every morning now — before she opened her laptop, before she checked the overnight messages, before she oriented herself to the day's schedule. The cup on the corner of her desk, exactly where she would reach for it without looking, exactly the way she drank it. It had been there every morning for three weeks, placed by someone at some point before she arrived, and no one had mentioned it and she had not mentioned it and it was simply a fact of her mornings in this building now, like the quality of the north light through her window and the sound of the construction lift running on the east face.
She sat down.
She reached for the cup without looking.
She thought: I have stopped bracing myself when I step off the elevator.
This thought arrived with the particular quality of things noticed too late — not alarming in themselves but alarming in what they indicated, the way a change in the weather is not the event but the sign of one. She had spent seven weeks maintaining a specific internal posture: alert, managed, the careful readiness of someone who knew that the ground beneath her had a history of shifting. She had been good at it. It had been necessary.
At some point in the past three weeks, without a decision being made, she had stopped.
She drank her coffee and looked at the day's schedule and told herself this was simply the natural adaptation of a person who had been working in the same building for two months. Comfort with an environment was not the same as comfort with a person. These were different things.
She was fairly certain they were different things.
---
Arjun appeared at her office door at ten forty-three.
Not a scheduled visit. He had a thin folder in one hand and the manner of someone stopping briefly on the way to something else — the posture of a passing-by rather than an arrival. She had learned to read the difference.
"Contractor change on floor five," he said. "Minor — they want to shift the lighting conduit run on the east wall. Needs your sign-off before two."
Nisha held out her hand for the folder.
He came in, set it on the desk, and stood at the corner of the desk while she opened it — the position he took when a conversation was meant to be brief, close enough to see the documents but not seated, not committed to a longer stay.
She looked at the conduit change. It was minor — the contractor's note was accurate. The repositioning would affect exactly one lighting position in the east corridor, and she had two ways to handle it, one marginally better than the other.
"Tell them the revised position needs to clear the cornice detail by at least forty millimetres," she said. "Otherwise the second option is fine."
"I'll pass it on." He took the folder. Didn't move immediately.
She looked at her laptop screen.
This was the third time this week he had stopped by with something that could have been handled through the project management system or via Vikram. She was aware of this in the way she was aware of most things she wasn't examining directly — peripherally, precisely, with the part of her attention that had been running quietly in the background for two months, cataloguing.
He left at ten forty-nine.
She went back to the drawing she had been working on and noted, without particular surprise, that she had continued it correctly despite the interruption, which meant some part of her had maintained the thread of the problem while the rest of her was doing other things.
She was getting used to that too.
---
The afternoon meeting with the seventh-floor decoration team ran from two to three-thirty.
It was a working meeting — the kind she preferred, with material samples on the table and actual decisions being made rather than deferred, the satisfying progress of a project moving from concept to reality one confirmed choice at a time. The team lead was good: prepared, responsive, the kind of contractor who asked useful questions rather than defensive ones.
Nisha was explaining the logic of the ceiling light positioning — the way the spacing created a rhythm that would shift in quality depending on the time of day, the specific effect she was trying to achieve in the transition zone between the corridor and the suite entrance — when she became aware of someone in the doorway.
Arjun. Standing just inside the frame, in the manner of someone who had arrived at the end of something rather than the beginning. He had a notebook. He was not, apparently, planning to announce himself.
She completed her explanation. The team lead made notes. Nisha turned to the next item on the agenda.
"Before you move on," Arjun said, from the doorway. Mild, as though he had been part of the meeting the entire time. "The transition zone — if the spacing shifts in the way you're describing, what happens at the suite entrance on the north end? The ceiling height changes there."
It was a precise question. It was also the question of someone who had read the specification document for a meeting he had not been scheduled to attend.
Nisha answered it. She answered it fully and correctly and without any visible indication that she had noticed anything beyond the technical content of the exchange.
After the meeting, walking back to her office, she spent approximately ten minutes considering whether she was supposed to find this alarming or not, and arrived at no conclusion.
---
Priya was in the lobby at five-fifteen, retrieving a hard copy of the phase two material schedule that Nisha had been meaning to send for two days and had finally printed.
Two minutes. That was all the lobby exchange required — hand off the folder, brief update on the studio's other active projects, Priya's news about the Anand client who had resurfaced with a new brief.
But Priya, in the way of someone who had known Nisha for a decade and had developed a comprehensive taxonomy of her moods and states, looked at her for a moment before taking the folder.
Not a long look. The kind that took three seconds and covered considerable ground.
"You seem comfortable here," Priya said.
Nisha looked at her.
"This is my workplace," she said.
"I know." Priya took the folder. Her voice had the particular quality it carried when she was being careful — not cautious, careful, the distinction being that cautious withheld and careful chose. "That's what I'm saying."
Nisha looked at the lobby around them — the desk, the security guard, the elevator bank, the high ceiling with the temporary lighting that would be replaced with the Celestia installation in four months. The building she had been entering and exiting for two months, which had ceased, at some point she couldn't precisely identify, to feel like territory she was moving through on borrowed permission.
"I'll call you tonight," she said.
Priya nodded. She knew what that meant.
---
She saw him from the corridor.
She was on her way back from the lobby, taking the longer route through the interior corridor rather than the direct elevator — a habit she had developed for no particular reason she had examined — when she passed the window that looked out onto the building's internal courtyard.
Arjun was standing in the courtyard below.
Not on a call. Not reviewing something on his phone. Simply standing, in the early evening light, with his phone held loosely at his side and his attention directed at nothing specific — the posture of a person who had stepped outside to be somewhere that was not his office, for no more sophisticated reason than that.
She stopped.
It was not a decision. Her feet made it before she did, the way feet sometimes understand things the rest of the body hasn't caught up with. She stood at the window and looked at him standing in the courtyard and had approximately ten seconds before the ethical question of the situation resolved itself clearly enough to act on.
He did not look up.
In those ten seconds she saw him the way she had seen him on the construction floor — in the unobserved state, without the professional assembly, without the careful management of the man who ran rooms and made decisions and held things in order through the force of a will she had come to understand was considerable and relentless. In the courtyard, in the early evening, he was simply a person standing outside because he needed a moment in a place that wasn't demanding anything from him.
She recognised that need. She had it too.
She walked on.
But she carried the image of it — the particular quality of his stillness in the evening light — for the rest of the evening, in the way you carry things that arrive without invitation and decline to leave on schedule.
---
Priya answered on the first ring.
"You were right," Nisha said, without preamble. Aanya was asleep. The apartment was quiet. She was sitting on the kitchen floor, back against the cabinet, in the position she took when she was thinking rather than avoiding. "I am comfortable there. I don't know when it happened."
A pause on the other end — the pause of a person who had been waiting for this call for some time and was deciding how to meet it.
"What does that mean for you?" Priya asked.
Nisha looked at the ceiling. At the crack that still needed fixing. At the ordinary, unchanged, entirely reliable surface of her own kitchen at nine-thirty on a Tuesday night.
"I don't know yet," she said. "But I think I need to know. I've been — not looking at it. Directly. I've been looking at everything around it but not at it."
"And now?"
"And now I think not looking is its own kind of decision. And I don't know if it's the right one."
Priya was quiet for a moment.
"Be careful," she said. Not a warning — an offering. The way you say it to someone you love who is about to do something that matters.
"I know," Nisha said.
She ended the call and sat in the kitchen quiet for a while.
Then she went to bed, and set her alarm, and lay in the dark thinking about tomorrow.
---
Wednesday.
She arrived at the review room at nine fifty-eight — her standard two minutes early, the habit that had become as reliable as anything else in her routine here. She set down her portfolio, opened her laptop, oriented herself to the morning.
There was something on the table beside her usual place.
A material sample — a stone tile, roughly twenty centimetres square, in a colour that sat between warm grey and the palest blush, with a surface texture she had not seen in any of the project's existing material boards. Beside it, a small square of paper, folded once. She picked it up.
The handwriting was not Vikram's neat print. It was a different hand — larger, more direct, the writing of someone who thought faster than they wrote and had made a certain peace with that.
*Arrived from Milan this morning. Thought of the atrium. — A.*
Not A.M. Not a formal initial and surname. Just: A.
Nisha held the note for a moment.
She read it again, which was unnecessary, because it was eleven words and she had understood them completely the first time. She read it anyway.
Then she set it down beside the sample, opened her laptop to the atrium specification file, and looked at the colour of the stone against the reference images she had been working from for three weeks.
It was right. She could see immediately that it was right — the specific quality of the blush undertone, the way it would interact with the botanical installation, the warmth it would bring to a space that needed warmth at its foundation. It was the kind of material find that happened rarely and mattered when it did.
She looked at the note.
She looked at her hands, which were resting on the keyboard and which were, she noted with the precise attention she gave to things she needed to be honest about, not entirely steady.
She took a breath.
She began to type.
