The thermometer read 38.4 at three in the morning.
Nisha had been awake since two forty-seven, when the sound from Aanya's room had changed from the deep silence of good sleep to the restless sounds of a child who was not comfortable. She had gone in and found her daughter flushed and warm against her palm, and had done the things you do: the thermometer, the children's paracetamol measured precisely, the cool cloth for the forehead, the rearrangement of the blanket to something lighter.
Aanya had looked up at her with the specific expression of a sick child — not frightened, not in serious distress, just fundamentally unhappy with the situation and requiring her mother's presence as the primary remedy.
"I know," Nisha had said, settling beside her. "I know, baby."
She had stayed.
At four, the temperature was 38.1. At five, 37.9. At six, it had come down to 37.4 and Aanya had finally subsided into the deep breathing of real sleep, her face less flushed, her body unclenched from the restless misery of the small hours.
Nisha sat on the floor beside the bed and looked at her daughter sleeping and did the arithmetic.
Nine o'clock: contractor meeting, the final confirmation of the phase two material orders. Non-negotiable — the contractor had a hard deadline with the supplier and the decision had been deferred twice already. Eleven-thirty: technical session on the northern property electrical layout. Two o'clock: Wednesday review. Five o'clock: revised drawings for the lobby threshold detail, promised to the construction lead for the morning shift tomorrow.
She had not slept.
She got up, quietly, and went to make coffee.
---
Her mother arrived at six fifty-eight.
Nisha had called at six-thirty and had not needed to explain much — her mother had heard the quality of her voice and said *I'm coming* in the tone that meant the conversation was over and the decision was made.
Baa Meera came in, assessed the situation with the efficiency of someone who had navigated many childhood fevers over several decades, and took up her position in the chair beside Aanya's bed with the settled confidence of a person who knew exactly what she was doing.
"Go," she said to Nisha. "I'll call if anything changes."
"She might need —"
"I know what she needs. Go."
Nisha went to the door.
Behind her, from the bedroom, came the sound of Aanya waking — the transitional sounds of a child moving from sleep toward consciousness, processing the information of a new morning.
"Mama?"
Nisha turned back.
Aanya was sitting up, her hair flattened on one side, her face carrying the slightly dazed expression of someone who had not slept well and was still working out the details of where they were. She looked at her grandmother. She looked at her mother in the doorway in work clothes with a bag over her shoulder.
"Mama stay," she said.
Not a question. Not a demand, exactly. Just the statement of a preference, offered by someone who trusted that preferences stated clearly enough would be heard.
Nisha crossed back to the bed. She sat on the edge of it and put her hand on her daughter's forehead — cooler now, the fever retreating — and pressed a kiss to her temple.
"Baa Meera is here," she said. "Mama has to go to work. But I'll be back early. I promise."
Aanya considered this. Looked at her grandmother. Looked back at her mother.
"Early," she said. A negotiated acceptance.
"Early," Nisha confirmed.
She kissed her again and got up and walked out the door, and the feeling that accompanied her down the stairs and into the autorickshaw and across the city to Malhotra Tower was the specific feeling of leaving the thing that mattered most to go and do the thing that made the thing that mattered most possible.
She had felt it before. She would feel it again. It did not get easier with repetition.
---
She arrived at eight forty-seven.
This was later than usual — she had been a seven forty-five arrival for three months, early enough to have the office to herself for an hour before the building filled. Today the corridors were already occupied when she came through, the twenty-eighth floor in its full working morning state.
She was aware, without needing a mirror, of what she looked like: the specific appearance of someone who had been awake since before three and had applied only the minimum of the morning's usual preparations. She had done what she could. It was not what she usually did.
She reached her office.
The coffee was on the desk. Still warm — placed recently, which meant whoever had arranged it had timed it to her usual arrival and then adjusted, somehow, for the later one.
She stood and looked at it for a moment.
Then she sat down, wrapped both hands around it, and let herself have thirty seconds of simply sitting with something warm before the day required her full performance.
Thirty seconds.
Then she opened her laptop.
---
The nine o'clock meeting ran to ten-fifteen.
She managed it. This was what she told herself afterward, and it was accurate: she had managed it. The contractor decisions were made correctly, the material orders confirmed, the supplier deadline met. She had been present and competent and had produced the outcomes the meeting required.
The effort of it, running on no sleep and the particular emotional weight of a morning that had included a small voice saying *mama stay*, was not visible. She was good at this. She had been good at this for a long time.
At eleven, her phone buzzed.
Her mother's name.
She stepped out of the pre-session setup for the eleven-thirty meeting and answered.
"The fever is back up," her mother said, in the calm voice of someone reporting a fact rather than sounding an alarm. "Thirty-eight point eight. She's not distressed, just uncomfortable. She's asking for you."
Nisha looked at the corridor wall.
"Is she eating?"
"A little. I gave her the second dose at ten like you said."
"Okay." She thought through the instructions — the dosage interval, the temperature threshold for concern, when to call the doctor. She conveyed them to her mother in the ordered way of someone who had memorised them. "Keep the room cool. The damp cloth on her forehead if she's uncomfortable. Call me if it goes above thirty-nine."
"I know," her mother said, gently. "I have done this before."
"I know you have." Nisha exhaled. "Thank you, Maa."
She went back in for the eleven-thirty meeting.
---
By twelve-thirty she had been running on hollow efficiency for three hours.
This was a specific state she had learned to navigate in the early months of Aanya's life — the condition of a person whose body had exhausted its reserves and was now operating on the functional autopilot of someone who knew what needed to be done and was doing it, step by step, without the resources that usually made doing it feel like anything other than getting through.
She went to the pantry on the twenty-eighth floor because it was empty at this hour and she needed a moment that was not performing for anyone.
She called her mother. Thirty-eight point six. Aanya was drowsy now, which was good — sleep was what the fever needed. Her mother's voice was warm and steady and entirely certain, and Nisha listened to it and let it do what it was doing, which was reminding her that her daughter was being well cared for by someone who loved her.
She hung up.
She stood in the empty pantry and put her forehead against the cool surface of the refrigerator door and closed her eyes.
Just for a moment. Just a moment where she was not required to look like anything.
The pantry door opened.
She heard it — the specific sound of the latch, the soft movement of the door — and opened her eyes and straightened before she had consciously decided to. The reflex of two years of not being seen in moments like this.
Arjun.
He stopped when he saw her. Not a long stop — a half-second, the adjustment of someone who had expected an empty room. His eyes took in what was there: her posture, her face, the phone in her hand, the particular quality of the moment he had walked into.
He did not ask what was wrong.
He did not ask if she was all right.
He went to the refrigerator — she had moved slightly to give him access — and took out a bottle of water. He considered the shelf for a moment. Then he took a second bottle and set it on the counter beside her, without comment, without looking at her directly, in the manner of someone performing an action that required no acknowledgment.
He turned and left.
The pantry door closed behind him.
Nisha looked at the second bottle of water on the counter.
She stood there for a moment.
Then she picked it up, opened it, and drank, and went back to her desk.
---
The Wednesday review began at two.
Arjun came in at one fifty-eight, as always. He set his folder down. He looked at the agenda.
They began.
She was paying attention — she was always paying attention in these sessions, it was not something she could afford not to do — but somewhere in the second hour she became aware that the session was moving differently than usual. The items were being covered at a pace that was efficient rather than thorough, the kind of efficiency that came from someone who had decided, before entering the room, that today's session would be concluded in a specific window.
Three items were deferred to the following week with brief notations. Two discussions that would normally run to full analysis were resolved in summary. At three-fifteen, Arjun closed his folder.
"I think that covers the critical path items," he said.
Nisha looked at the agenda. There were four items remaining. She looked at Arjun.
He was looking at his folder.
She did not ask.
She began to close her own materials.
"The lobby threshold revision," he said, still looking at his folder, in the tone of someone concluding a meeting rather than adding to it. "Send it tomorrow morning. I'll inform the construction lead."
She looked at him.
He did not look up.
The revision had been due by five o'clock today. She had been calculating, in the background, whether she could finish it tonight after Aanya was settled — what time that would be, how much she had left, whether the hours would stretch.
"The construction lead's timeline —" she started.
"I'll manage it," he said. Quietly, finally. "Send it when you can."
A pause.
"Thank you," she said.
He nodded once, the small nod of someone receiving something that didn't require more than that.
She gathered her things and left.
---
The autorickshaw moved through the afternoon traffic with the unhurried pace of a city that had not been informed of her particular urgency.
Nisha sat in the back and let the city move around her and thought about nothing specific, which was what her mind did when it had been running at full capacity for too long and had finally been given permission to stop.
Her mother's building appeared ahead. The familiar curve of the road, the neem tree at the gate, the light in the third-floor window that meant her mother was in the front room.
She paid the driver and went up.
Aanya was asleep on the sofa, curled against her grandmother's side, her hair loose and her face relaxed in the particular complete peace of a child whose fever has broken and who has finally given in to rest. Her temperature, her mother reported in a quiet voice so as not to wake her, had come down to thirty-seven point two an hour ago.
Nisha sat on the edge of the sofa.
She put her hand very gently on her daughter's back — felt the even rise and fall of it, the warmth that was now the normal warmth of a sleeping child rather than the dry heat of a fever.
Aanya stirred. Made a small sound of recognition without fully waking. Then her hand found her mother's wrist in the automatic, seeking way she had when she was half-asleep — fingers wrapping around it with the grip of someone who has located what she was looking for and does not intend to let go.
Nisha sat very still.
She thought about a bottle of water placed on a counter without comment. About a meeting ended forty-five minutes early. About a deadline quietly moved by a man who had asked no questions and offered no explanations, who had simply looked at a situation and adjusted what he could adjust.
These were small things. She knew they were small things.
But small things, she had learned, over two years of doing everything herself, were often the things that held you together on the days when the larger architecture of your life was under strain.
Aanya's grip on her wrist loosened as she drifted deeper into sleep.
Nisha did not move.
Outside, the city continued. Inside, the room was warm and quiet and entirely sufficient.
She stayed.
