She had packed the night before, which was not her usual method.
Usually she packed the morning of — efficient, focused, the minimum required for the duration. But the night before this particular trip she had found herself at the wardrobe at ten-thirty, Aanya already asleep, going through the specific calculation of two days away with the thoroughness of someone preparing for something longer.
Two days. It was two days.
She folded the second kurta and placed it in the bag and told herself this was normal. Designers went on site visits. Site visits sometimes required overnight stays. This was a standard feature of the work she had agreed to do when she had said *there is no reason* in a room with a milestone map three months ago.
She went to check on Aanya before she went to bed.
Her daughter was sleeping with her usual conviction — arms wide, face turned toward the nightlight, the yellow elephant blanket in its permanent state of negotiated disorder. Nisha stood in the doorway for longer than the check required.
This was the first night she would not be in this building since Aanya was born.
She had known this, abstractly, since the travel requirement had appeared on the milestone map. She had planned for it — her mother confirmed, Deepa's hours extended, emergency contacts updated. Everything arranged. Everything manageable.
Standing in the doorway at ten-thirty, it felt less manageable than the spreadsheet had suggested.
She went to bed. She set the alarm. She told herself that Aanya would be fine, which was true, and that she would be fine, which was also true, and that two days was two days.
In the morning, she kissed her daughter goodbye while Aanya was still mostly asleep and registered the event with the drowsy, uncomplicated acceptance of someone who trusted the world completely.
Nisha envied her that, briefly and with great tenderness.
---
Arjun was already at the gate.
This did not surprise her — she had learned his relationship with time over three months, the way he arrived at things before they required his arrival, as though punctuality was insufficient and what he actually preferred was a margin of control over the environment before it began demanding things from him.
He had coffee. He was reading something on his tablet. He looked up when she approached, with the expression that had become his standard greeting for her — attentive, contained, the look of someone who had noted her arrival and was deciding how to hold it.
"Project director," she said, by way of opening.
"His son has a fever. He sends his apologies and three pages of notes."
"I've seen the notes."
"Then we're prepared."
They checked in. They went through security. They found the gate and sat in adjacent seats in the way of two people who had been assigned adjacent seats on the flight and were making a reasonable peace with the geography.
The flight was two and a half hours.
Nisha opened her laptop. Arjun had the window seat — she had assumed she would, had been composing a polite deflection of the offer — but when they reached the row he had simply moved to the aisle without discussion, the small courtesy extended so naturally it didn't register as courtesy until she was already seated and looking at the wing and the pale morning sky beyond it.
She opened her site visit preparation file.
He opened his.
They worked.
---
The documents for the northern property were different in character from the flagship — smaller scale, more historically complex, the particular challenges of adapting a space that had its own established identity rather than building one from scratch. She had been looking forward to this part of the project in the specific way she looked forward to problems that required a different kind of thinking.
She worked through the concept review materials. He worked through the structural assessments. Occasionally one of them said something to the other — a question, an observation, the natural communication of two people working in close proximity on related problems. The normal vocabulary of their working relationship, compressed into the narrower space of two seats on a regional flight.
The clouds outside the window thinned as they gained altitude. The city fell away below them and was replaced by the patchwork of the plains and then, gradually, the first suggestion of hills.
At some point — she did not notice exactly when — the quality of the light changed and her eyes grew heavy and the document in front of her stopped resolving into meaning.
She did not intend to sleep.
She was aware, at the edge of waking, of the specific quality of aircraft cabin light — the particular warmth of it, the low sound of the engines, the slight vibration that was somehow more soporific than silence. She was aware of the window beside her, the brightness of it.
And then she was aware of nothing for a while.
When she surfaced, the brightness was gone. The window shade had been lowered — not fully, but enough to take the direct light off her face. The angle of it was specific: whoever had moved it had moved it to exactly the position that blocked the sun without darkening the cabin entirely.
She looked at the shade. Then at the man beside her, who was reading his tablet with the focused attention of someone engaged with what was in front of him and not particularly interested in whether she had noticed anything.
She looked back at her document.
She did not say anything.
Neither did he.
But she carried it the way you carry small things that mean more than their size — quietly, precisely, in the part of you that keeps accurate records even when the rest of you has decided not to.
---
Shimla was cold in the way that hill stations are cold — not the air-conditioned cold of the city but the real cold of altitude and pine and air that had not been processed by a million human lungs before reaching you. They collected their bags and found the car that was waiting and drove up through the town to the property, which was exactly what the photographs had suggested and also, as properties always were in person, more.
The building was a colonial-era structure that had been through several lives before the Malhotra Group acquired it — a private residence, then a small hotel, then a period of partial dereliction, and now this: the project she had been preparing for since the milestone map, the problem she had been looking forward to.
The local contractor met them at the gate — a woman named Shreya who had been managing heritage properties in Himachal Pradesh for fifteen years and who Nisha liked immediately, on the basis of the way she talked about the building. People who talked about buildings the way Shreya did understood something essential about what buildings were for.
They spent four hours in the property.
This was the part she had not fully anticipated — working with Arjun in a space that had no conference room geometry, no table to organise the distance between them, no professional infrastructure managing the terms of their proximity. Here it was just the two of them and Shreya, moving through rooms, looking at what was there and what could be made of it.
He deferred to her on the aesthetic questions with a directness that was different from the Wednesday reviews — less interrogation, more genuine inquiry. She found herself explaining her thinking in full rather than in the defended summaries she produced in formal settings, and the explanations were better for being complete.
At one point they were both crouched beside a section of original floor tile that had survived under decades of carpet — examining the pattern, which was extraordinary, which changed what was possible for the whole ground floor — and she was talking about how to integrate it with the new material palette, and she looked up in the middle of a sentence and found him looking at the tile with the expression she had seen in him only a few times: the look of someone encountering something they had not expected to find beautiful.
"We keep it," he said.
"All of it," she said.
They looked at the tile together for a moment.
Shreya, behind them, made a note.
---
Dinner was at a small restaurant three minutes' walk from the hotel — Shreya's recommendation, the kind of place that did not need to announce itself because the people who needed to know about it already did. She left them at eight, apologising for an early morning, and the table reconfigured from three to two.
Nisha reached for the menu.
"How did you end up in interior design?" Arjun asked.
She looked up.
It was not a question about the project. It was not a question about resource allocation or material specifications or anything that could be directed back to the work. It was a question about her — asked plainly, with the direct curiosity of someone who actually wanted the answer.
She told him the true version: the first design course at twenty, the specific quality of understanding that had arrived in that classroom, the knowledge that she had found the thing she was built for. The years of building toward it, the studio with Priya, the particular satisfaction of a space that worked — that did what it was supposed to do for the people who lived in it.
He listened in the way he listened when he was genuinely paying attention — completely, without the partial presence that some people brought to conversations while keeping the other half of their attention somewhere else.
Then he told her about the first time he had understood what the company was. Not the inheritance of it — the understanding. A specific afternoon at seventeen, walking through a property his father had just acquired, seeing the staff and the guests and the way the building held all of it, and thinking: *this is what we do. We make places where people can be somewhere other than their ordinary lives for a while.* He had never lost that, he said. Even when the work became the numbers and the acquisitions and the structural engineering consultations, that was still underneath it.
Nisha looked at him across the small restaurant table.
She thought: I knew this about him. She had known it from the way he looked at the Pondicherry photographs in her portfolio, from the specific quality of his attention during the atrium discussion, from the way he had looked at the floor tile this afternoon. She had known it and had been not-knowing it simultaneously, the way you can know something and keep it at a distance when the knowing is inconvenient.
The dinner lasted two hours.
Neither of them noticed.
---
The hotel was close enough to walk.
This was established by Shreya before she left — *it's a nice evening, ten minutes, turn left at the chowk* — and neither of them had proposed an alternative, and so they were walking, in the Shimla night, which was cool and quiet and lit by the particular warmth of hill station streetlamps.
They were talking about the floor tile. About what it changed for the ground floor concept, the ripple of implications through the material palette, the conversation they would need to have with Shreya tomorrow morning about preservation versus restoration. Good conversation, real conversation, the kind that had its own momentum.
The steps were old stone, the kind that tourist maps noted as charming and ankles noted as uneven. Nisha was mid-sentence when her foot caught the edge of the second step — not a fall, barely even a stumble, the kind of thing that resolved itself in a half-second.
Except that his hand was already there.
Her arm, just above the elbow. A grip that was immediate and certain, the reflexes of someone who had been paying attention to where she was in the space around him. She steadied. She was fine — had been fine almost immediately, the stumble self-correcting before the assistance was necessary.
But his hand did not release.
One second. Two.
The street was quiet around them. The lamplight fell at an angle that was not designed to illuminate anything in particular and did so anyway. She looked up — the natural direction, the direction of balance regained, the direction of checking whether what had just happened had been noticed by the person closest to her.
He was looking down.
The distance between them was the distance that remained when two people are standing still and one of them has not yet decided what to do with the space.
Nisha stepped forward.
"Thank you," she said.
The words came out at exactly the right register — warm, light, the correct response to someone who had prevented a minor stumble on an uneven step. Nothing in them that required anything further.
His hand released.
They continued walking.
The hotel was four minutes further. They covered them in the conversation about the floor tile, which resumed without acknowledgment of the interruption, because the interruption had not been acknowledged, because neither of them had decided to acknowledge it, and that decision — mutual, unspoken, the decision to continue — was its own kind of statement.
---
She called her mother from the room.
Aanya had gone down at eight-thirty. Eaten well. Spent the afternoon teaching Baa Meera the correct method for stacking the rings, which apparently involved considerable instruction and two demonstrations. Her mother's voice was warm and amused and entirely certain, which was what Nisha needed to hear.
She said goodnight and hung up and lay on the bed with the ceiling above her.
The room was quiet. Outside, Shimla was doing its night things — gentler than the city, the sounds smaller and further between.
She thought about a hand on her arm on an uneven step.
She thought about a window shade lowered to exactly the right position while she slept.
She thought about two hours over dinner and the specific quality of attention from someone telling you a true thing about themselves — not the professional version, not the managed version, but the version that existed before the management.
She had been not-knowing things for three months. She had been keeping two categories separate — the person in the conference room and the person from before — and treating their separateness as a fact when it was, she was understanding now, a choice. A choice she had made because the alternative was to know something she was not sure she was ready to know.
She looked at the ceiling.
She did not name it.
But she stopped, for the first time, actively unmaking it.
---
The morning session with Shreya was good — decisive, productive, the floor tile question resolved in the first forty minutes in a direction that satisfied everyone. They were at the car by eleven, the work done, the drive to the airport ahead of them.
The driver put on music at a low volume. The hills moved past the windows, the light different in the morning from how it had been the evening before.
Nisha was looking at the hills when Arjun said, without turning from the window on his side:
"What were you going to say last night?"
She kept her eyes on the hills.
"Before you stumbled," he said. "You were mid-sentence."
She thought about the sentence. She remembered it — the floor tile, the implications for the material palette, the entirely real and project-relevant thought she had been in the middle of.
"Nothing important," she said.
The hills continued.
He did not ask again.
But the silence that followed had a specific texture — the texture of two people who both knew the answer that had just been given was not the complete answer, and who had both, for reasons that were their own and that they understood in each other without discussion, agreed to let it stand.
For now.
The car descended toward the plains.
Nisha watched the hills recede and thought: *for now* has a shorter lifespan than it used to.
