The Wednesday review began the way Wednesday reviews had begun for the past two months — materials on the table, agenda open, the particular quality of attention that two people bring to a room when they have learned each other's working rhythms well enough to begin without preamble.
Nisha had the phase three documentation ready. Arjun had reviewed the preliminary submissions, she could tell — he had the look of someone who had read carefully and arrived with positions already formed. This was normal. This was how their best sessions worked.
She was aware, without looking at it directly, of the specific quality of the air in the room.
They had not discussed Wednesday of last week. They had not discussed *Rohan Mehta visits your office frequently* or *is that a problem* or the four-word answer that had ended the conversation by not quite ending it. They had exchanged three project emails since then, all entirely professional, all entirely about the work.
This was, she had decided, the correct approach.
She opened the first document.
They began.
---
For forty minutes, it worked.
The phase three decisions moved forward with the productive efficiency she had come to associate with their best working sessions — the ones where the friction was generative rather than obstructive, where the push and pull of two people who both cared about the outcome produced something better than either would have arrived at alone. She made three decisions she was confident in. He raised two concerns she had not fully considered and was right about both of them. She revised her position on the timeline for the northern property delivery.
This was the work she had come here to do. This was what the project was.
Then they reached the budget reallocation section.
Arjun set the revised cost breakdown on the table — a single page, the kind of document that contained a great deal of consequence in a small amount of space. She read it once, quickly, and understood the shape of what it was proposing before she reached the specific line item.
The botanical installation. The atrium centrepiece she had defended in the shortlist presentation, that had survived the technical consultation, that was the visual and experiential anchor of the entire ground floor concept.
"The cost overrun on the structural phase needs to be absorbed somewhere," Arjun said. His voice was even, practical, the voice of a man presenting a problem that had a solution. "The botanical installation is the highest discretionary line in the design budget."
Nisha looked at the page.
"It's not discretionary," she said. "It's the element that differentiates Celestia from every other luxury property in this market segment. Remove it and you have a very expensive lobby."
"Remove the cost overrun from the structural phase and you have a building that isn't built on schedule."
"Then find the absorption elsewhere. There are other lines."
"I've reviewed the other lines. This is the one with the most room."
She looked at him. He looked at the page. The beginning of a familiar dynamic — she had data, he had different data, the friction would produce something — except that this time there was a quality beneath the professional disagreement that had not been there in previous arguments, a tightness in the air that was not entirely about budget allocation.
"Walk me through the alternative lines," she said. "All of them. Before we decide this one is the answer."
He walked her through them. She listened carefully and asked good questions and noted two places where his analysis had not accounted for phase dependencies that would make the apparent savings illusory. He acknowledged both points.
The botanical installation remained on the table.
---
It was the pattern comment that changed the temperature.
They had been going for another twenty minutes — the specific productive difficulty of two people with genuine expertise on both sides of a resource question — when Arjun set down his pen and looked at her with the expression she now recognised as his version of a different kind of statement.
"There's a consistent pattern in your design decisions across all three phases," he said. "High aesthetic investment in elements with significant experiential impact but difficult ROI measurement. The botanical installation is the most visible example, but it's not isolated."
Nisha looked at him.
The pen in her hand was still. The document in front of her had not changed. The room had the same light it had had thirty seconds ago.
"If you have concerns about my design judgment," she said, "this is not the first opportunity you've had to raise them."
"I'm not questioning your judgment. I'm identifying a pattern that has budget implications."
"You're characterising how I work as a liability." Her voice was even. She was very focused on keeping it even. "That's a different thing from a budget question."
"It's an observation, not a characterisation."
"Then observe more carefully." She turned the phase two documentation to face him — three months of decisions, the full record. "Every element you're calling difficult to measure has downstream revenue implications I've documented. The repeat visitor data, the social referral rates, the experiential differentiation metrics. I've shown you this work. The pattern you're seeing is a design philosophy, not a blind spot."
He looked at the documentation.
She could see him reading it — the actual reading, the consideration of someone who was taking the information seriously rather than defending a position. This was one of the things about him that she had learned over three months: he was genuinely capable of revising when the evidence required it. It did not make the preceding exchange less sharp.
"The botanical installation," he said finally, "represents fourteen percent of the discretionary design budget."
"And it will represent approximately forty percent of every photograph taken in the lobby for the next decade," she said. "Which is the marketing material that fills those rooms."
A pause.
"I need an alternative absorption proposal before Friday," he said.
"You'll have one."
They looked at each other across the table. The document between them, the numbers, the project they had both spent three months building — all of it present and real and not, in this moment, entirely what the room was about.
---
"The issue," Arjun said, and something in his voice had shifted — a degree less measured, a degree more direct, "is that you resist flexibility on the elements you care most about, regardless of the external constraints."
Nisha set her pen down.
Not carefully. The specific placement of a person who needs a moment before they speak.
"I resist being told to compromise the work without adequate justification," she said. "That's not inflexibility. That's knowing what matters."
"Knowing what matters is not the same as being right about the constraints."
"And challenging every decision I make is not the same as good project oversight." She heard the edge in her own voice and did not try to remove it. It had been there for a week. It had been there, she was now understanding, for considerably longer than a week, waiting for a moment when the professional surface was thin enough for it to come through. "Two months of Wednesday reviews, and you have questioned every significant design decision I've made. I have answered every question with data. At some point the question stops being about the work."
Arjun was still.
The stillness of someone who has heard something that requires honest processing before response.
"What is it about, then," he said. Not a challenge — a genuine question, asked with the quietness of someone who thought they might already know the answer.
"I don't know," she said. Which was partly true. "But it isn't always about the botanical installation."
The room held them both.
And then she said the thing that had been in the room since the previous Wednesday, since the coat check alcove, since longer than either of them had been entirely honest about.
"You don't have the right to have opinions about how I allocate my attention. In this project or anywhere else."
His jaw tightened — not anger, something more internal than that. He looked at her with the unguarded quality she had seen in him a handful of times, the look that existed before the management of it.
Then: "You're right."
Not the deflection she had been braced for. Not the redirection to professional territory. Just: *you're right.*
"I don't have that right," he said. Quietly, with the specific weight of someone who means what they are saying and knows the full implication of meaning it. "I don't."
The room was very quiet.
Nisha looked at the budget document.
She thought about three months of Wednesday afternoons and cà phê every morning and a note written by hand from Milan and a legal pad that someone had sat in front of and not been able to write on, and all the things that had accumulated between two people who were supposed to have resolved each other two and a half years ago.
"The botanical installation stays," she said. Her voice had come down from its edge. Not soft — settled. "I'll find the absorption elsewhere. You'll have the proposal by Friday."
He nodded. "Friday."
They gathered their things.
---
The elevator arrived at the same time they did.
This happened sometimes — the lobby call and the arrival coinciding, leaving no graceful interval. They stepped in together without discussion. The doors closed.
Nisha watched the floor numbers descend.
Thirty. Twenty-eight. Twenty-five.
The silence in the elevator was not the managed silence of conference rooms. It was something else — the silence of two people who had said true things and were now in the close company of those things, in a small space, with nowhere for them to go.
Twenty. Fifteen.
She was composing the Friday proposal in the back of her mind — the absorption options, the sequencing, the way she could make the numbers work without sacrificing the element that made the project worth the numbers. This was useful. This was something to do with her attention.
Ten.
"Two and a half years ago," Arjun said.
His voice was quiet. He was looking at the elevator doors — the same thing she was looking at, the closed doors, the small illuminated number counting down.
"I called you."
No context offered. No explanation of why he was saying this, or what he meant by it, or what he expected her to do with it. Just the fact, stated plainly, in the voice of someone who had been carrying it for a while and had put it down in the only available moment.
The doors opened.
Nisha walked out.
Her feet moved — left, right, across the lobby floor, past the security desk, toward the revolving door. The evening air came through as she pushed it open, warm and specific, the smell of the city at this hour.
Behind her, the elevator did not close immediately.
She did not look back.
But somewhere between the security desk and the revolving door, her pace changed — a fraction slower, a half-beat, the involuntary adjustment of a body responding to something the mind was still catching up with.
*I called you.*
She walked out into the evening and hailed a taxi and gave her address and sat in the back with her hands folded in her lap and the city moving past the windows.
He had called.
She knew he had called — once, at ten forty-seven, which she had watched arrive and not answered and then watched end and then waited for a second call that had not come.
He had said: *I called you.* Not *I tried to reach you* or *I left a message.* Just: I called. Present in the sentence, with no further accounting.
She thought about the way he had said it — to the elevator doors, without looking at her. The voice of someone making a statement they had needed to make, without requiring a response, without knowing if it would be received.
She thought about a floor in an old apartment and a piece of paper with a signature on it and one call at ten forty-seven that she had watched and not answered.
She thought: *he called once.* She had always known that. She had asked herself, in a dark corridor three weeks ago, why only once.
She did not yet have the answer.
But the question had just gotten a piece of itself back.
The taxi turned the corner.
Home was ahead — lit windows, her mother's building, Aanya inside.
Nisha paid the driver and got out and stood on the pavement for a moment in the night air, the way she sometimes did when she needed the transition between the person she was in that building and the person who was about to walk through that door.
She stood there longer than usual.
Then she went in.
