Monday arrived and they were both in the building and neither of them said anything.
Arjun was aware of this with a precision that he recognised as its own kind of statement — the specific awareness of an absence, the way you feel the weight of a word that has not been spoken more clearly than you feel most words that have. He walked past her office at ten-fifteen and she was at her desk with her drawings and her coffee and the professional composure that had been her primary mode of communication with him since the beginning, and nothing about the scene indicated that two days ago they had stood in a park and looked at each other across a distance that was no longer primarily geographical.
He continued to his own floor.
He sat at his desk and looked at the reports that needed his attention and gave them approximately sixty percent of what they required.
The remaining forty percent was in a park on a Saturday morning, sitting on a bench that had still been warm.
---
On Wednesday, after the review ended — a session that had been professional and efficient and had covered all necessary ground while maintaining, with the mutual discipline of two people who had decided something by deciding nothing, a complete silence on the subject that occupied both of them entirely — he did not go to the car park.
He walked.
He had been doing this more since Saturday. The movement helped. Not because it produced answers but because it permitted the questions to exist in a form that was less confined than his office, which was, on the days when the questions were loud, becoming difficult to stay inside.
He turned east from the building without deciding to.
The park was fifteen minutes at a walk. He knew this now. He had not known it six days ago.
He was not going to the park. He was walking east, which happened to be the direction of the park, and whatever happened after that was not a decision he had made in advance.
He arrived at the park at six twenty-three.
---
He saw her immediately.
Not Nisha — the child. Sitting on the grass in the eastern corner near the play equipment, in the specific gravity of a small person engaged with something important. A red bucket. Sand. The systematic work of filling and emptying that occupied toddlers with the seriousness of meaningful labour.
A woman on the nearby bench — older, comfortable in the posture of someone who had sat on many benches watching many children over many years. The evening sitter, he understood. Not Nisha.
He stood at the edge of the park.
He knew, with complete clarity, that he should not be here. That this was not his space, that the child in the yellow shirt — a different yellow shirt today, but yellow, always yellow apparently, which was its own small detail that sat in his chest in a way he could not account for — was not his to approach. That he had no standing here, no right, nothing that could justify what he was considering doing.
He stood there for thirty seconds.
Aanya looked up.
The left-side furrow. The assessing look. Then — and this was the thing he had not expected, the thing that made the thirty seconds' worth of resolution completely irrelevant — she smiled. Not the smile of recognition, not the smile of a child who knew him. The simpler smile of a child who had looked at a face and found it unthreatening and decided, on that basis alone, that it was acceptable.
He walked into the park.
---
He sat on the grass.
Not close — several metres, enough distance to be clearly not an intrusion, the posture of someone who had found a place to sit and was sitting there, nothing more. He looked at the grass in front of him. At the hedge along the eastern fence. At the pigeons.
He was aware, in his peripheral vision, of the child continuing her work with the bucket.
He was aware of the sitter on the bench, who had looked at him once — the quick assessment of someone responsible for a child's safety — and then looked at Aanya, and then settled back with the watchful ease of someone who had decided the situation did not require intervention.
Three minutes passed.
Then there was movement at the edge of his vision, and he looked, and Aanya was standing in front of him.
She had the red bucket in both hands. She held it out toward him with the gravity of someone making a significant offer — the specific solemnity of a child presenting something they consider valuable to someone they have decided, for their own reasons, is worthy of receiving it.
Arjun looked at the bucket.
He looked at the child.
She waited with the patience of someone who had made an offer and was prepared to allow the other party adequate time to process it.
He took the bucket.
---
They worked.
This was the only word for it, later — they worked. Aanya directed the enterprise with the authority of someone who knew what the project required and was allocating resources accordingly. The bucket needed filling. The filling required specific technique — not too fast, not the wrong kind of sand, deposited at a particular angle that she demonstrated twice when his execution was imprecise.
He adjusted his technique.
She watched him adjust, assessed the result, and indicated with a small sound of approval that the standard had been met.
They continued.
He was sitting cross-legged on the grass in a park in the early evening, in his work clothes, filling a red bucket with sand under the supervision of a child who was not yet two years old, and it was — he would not have predicted this — entirely uncomplicated. There was no weight to it. No calculation. Nothing that required management. She had given him a job and he was doing the job and she was there, close enough that he could have reached out and tucked the loose strand of hair back from her forehead, and he did not do that but he was aware of it as a possible thing in a way that was entirely new to him.
At some point the sitter on the bench looked over and he caught her eye and nodded — the minimal communication of a man conveying that he understood he was in borrowed space and had no intention of abusing the borrowing. She looked at Aanya, who was absorbed in pointing at a section of sand she wanted relocated. She settled back.
The evening light shifted.
Aanya said something — one syllable, accompanied by a gesture toward the far corner of the sand area. He did not fully parse the word but he understood the instruction. He moved the bucket.
She considered the result.
Found it adequate.
They continued working.
---
He heard the footsteps before he saw her.
Quick, purposeful — the specific cadence of someone moving toward a destination rather than through space. He looked up.
Nisha was coming through the gate.
She was looking ahead in the manner of someone who had a destination — her daughter, the sitter, the ordinary end of a working day — and had not yet looked at the detail of the specific scene that destination contained. She was in her work clothes, bag over one shoulder, the slightly loosened composure of a person at the end of a long Wednesday.
She looked up.
She saw him.
The stop was complete — not a hesitation, a full stop, her body processing what her eyes were sending before her mind had completed the accounting. Two seconds, perhaps three. Then she continued walking, because standing at the gate was not a real option and she was a woman who, as he had observed over four months, did not allow herself the luxury of the real option when a functional one was available.
She reached them.
"Aanya," she said.
Her voice was entirely even. The voice of a mother arriving to collect her daughter at the end of the day, warm and specific and completely without indication that anything unusual was occurring in the scene before her.
Aanya looked up from the bucket.
"Mama." The greeting of a child whose world has just become complete.
She looked at her mother. Then she looked at Arjun, with whom she had been working satisfactorily for the past several minutes. Then she looked back at her mother, apparently to ensure that Nisha had registered the presence of the person she had been working with, because this seemed to Aanya like information worth sharing.
She pointed at Arjun.
"Papa," she said.
Simply. Clearly. In the voice of a child who had arrived at a conclusion through whatever process of recognition was available to a person whose understanding of the world was still being assembled, and who saw no reason why this conclusion should not be shared.
The word entered the air of the park and stayed there.
Nisha went entirely still.
Arjun, who had been in the process of standing — the careful, unhurried movement of someone not wanting to startle a small person — also went still.
Aanya looked between them with the mild interest of someone who has said a true thing and is waiting to see how the adults will process it.
---
Arjun finished standing.
He did it slowly, in sections, because his body required the additional time and because there was no graceful alternative.
Nisha was looking at him.
Not with the professional composure. Not with the carefully managed distance of four months of Wednesday reviews and construction corridors. She was looking at him with the expression he had seen for the first time on Saturday — the expression of someone standing between what they love most and something they have been trying, with everything they have, to keep separate from it.
Except that the separation had just ended.
In one syllable.
From the most credible possible source.
"She came to me," he said. Quietly. Not a defence — a fact, offered because it was true and because he needed her to know that he had not gone to the child. The child had come to him. He had not sought this. And also: he could not bring himself to wish it had not happened. "I didn't approach her. She —" He stopped. Looked at Aanya, who was watching this exchange with the equanimity of someone who had said what she had to say and was now waiting for the conversation to catch up. "She brought me the bucket."
Nisha looked at him for a long moment.
Then she crouched down to Aanya's level. She said something to her daughter in a low voice — private, the register of a mother and child talking between themselves — and picked up the red bucket and handed it back to her with the care of someone returning something important to its owner.
She stood.
She lifted Aanya onto her hip.
She looked at Arjun one more time — the look of someone who has been carrying something for a very long time and can feel, in this moment, the precise weight of it.
She did not say anything.
Neither did he.
But the silence was different now from all the silences that had come before it. This one did not have the quality of two people maintaining a managed distance. This one had the quality of two people standing at the edge of something that was going to require them both to speak, and neither of them doing it yet, and both of them knowing that yet was the operative word.
She turned and walked away with Aanya on her hip.
Aanya looked back over her mother's shoulder.
Not the curious look of a stranger encountering a new face. Something else — the look of a child who had filed a person in a particular category and was confirming that the filing had been correct.
She lifted one small hand.
Waved.
Arjun raised his hand in return, which he did before he had decided to, which was becoming something of a pattern with this child.
They went through the gate.
He stood in the park alone, with the red bucket-shaped impression in the grass where they had been sitting, and one syllable still in the air, and the understanding that the silence that had been sustaining both of them since Saturday had just been given a very specific expiry date.
It was only a matter of now of when.
