The bath took eleven minutes.
Nisha knew this because she had been counting — not the seconds, but the components, the sequence of a routine she had performed every evening for eighteen months and which tonight she needed to be correct in every particular. Water temperature. The small rubber duck that Aanya required in the left corner. The specific shampoo that did not sting eyes. The towel warmed on the rack.
All of it exactly right.
Because if she focused entirely on the bath being exactly right, she did not have to focus on anything else.
Aanya submitted to the washing with her customary mix of cooperation and independent commentary — objecting to the water on her face, approving the rubber duck, conducting a brief negotiation about the shampoo that Nisha won through distraction. By the time she was wrapped in the warm towel and installed in her mother's arms, she had moved on to more pressing concerns, narrating something at length in the running mix of words and invented syllables that constituted her current preferred mode of communication.
Nisha listened. She responded at the right intervals. She carried her daughter to her room and dressed her and sat in the chair beside the cot and read the first story and then the second story and then held the small hand that reached through the cot bars until the breathing deepened and the hand went slack.
All of it exactly right.
Then she went to the kitchen and sat on the floor and called Priya.
---
"He knows," she said, without preamble. "Aanya called him Papa."
The silence on the other end was the specific silence of someone receiving a significant quantity of information in a short space of time and needing a moment to process it correctly.
"Tell me," Priya said.
So Nisha told her.
The park on Saturday — the furrow, the bench, the *we need to get home* that had been the only sentence available to her. The four days of saying nothing and doing nothing and going into the building and performing the professional version of herself with the specific discipline of someone holding a very large thing in place through the force of will alone. And then Wednesday evening — the gate, the footsteps, the red bucket, and her daughter's clear and certain voice stating a conclusion that a child of eighteen months had reached through whatever process of recognition was available to someone who had been in the world for not quite two years.
*Papa.*
She said the word once, in the telling of it, and felt it land in the kitchen the same way it had landed in the park — occupying the air with a weight disproportionate to its two syllables.
"He was sitting on the grass," Nisha said. "She had given him her bucket. They were — working together. She was directing him."
Another silence.
"What do you think he'll do?" Priya asked.
---
Nisha looked at the ceiling of her kitchen.
The crack was still there. She had been meaning to fix it for six months. In the way of things that were not urgent, it had remained.
What do you think he'll do.
This was the question she had been refusing to fully form for four months — the question that existed underneath every other question, the one she had built the careful professional composure and the managed distance and the two-worlds-never-touching architecture specifically to avoid having to answer.
Arjun Malhotra. What he would do.
He was a CEO. He had legal resources and financial resources and a family with its own gravitational field. He had, somewhere in the archive of the past two and a half years, the sense of having been wronged — she understood that now, even if she did not yet have the full picture of what exactly had happened on his side of the silence. He had a right, she understood in the cold clear part of herself that processed things without sentiment, to information she had withheld for eighteen months.
If he wanted to pursue that right through formal channels — if the family got involved, if his mother directed the same careful attention to this that she directed to everything else —
She stopped herself.
"I don't know," she said. "That's what frightens me most."
---
She did not sleep.
This was not a decision. She lay in the dark of her room and her mind ran the scenarios the way it always had in the hard periods — automatically, compulsively, the survival mechanism of a person who had learned early that thinking through the worst possibilities in advance was less terrifying than being surprised by them.
If he engaged lawyers. If the family framed it as concealment. If his mother — who had already demonstrated a capacity for the management of information and the careful construction of outcomes — decided that this was a situation requiring her particular skills.
Custody. Access. The specific vulnerability of a single mother with a small studio against the legal capacity of a family like the Malhotras.
She lay in the dark and built these scenarios with the efficiency of someone who had been doing crisis planning since before Aanya was born.
And then, somewhere in the second hour, she caught herself.
She was planning a defence against a man who had, four hours ago, been sitting cross-legged on the grass of a public park, filling a red bucket with sand under the supervision of her eighteen-month-old daughter.
Who had received the bucket — the small, important, sand-covered bucket — with both hands.
Who had adjusted his technique when it was found imprecise.
Who had said, in the park on Saturday, *we need to get home* — no, that had been her. He had said *she came to me.* Three words of a man who needed her to understand that he had not pursued the child. That the child had come to him.
She lay in the dark and held the contradiction — the fear in one hand, the image of him on the grass in the other — and could not, for the first time in eighteen months of disciplined separation, make them stay in different categories.
---
Priya called at eight-fifteen on Thursday morning.
Nisha was sitting at her kitchen table with the Celestia contract on the screen in front of her and a cup of tea that had gone cold an hour ago. She had been looking at the early termination clause for forty minutes without deciding anything.
"You're thinking about leaving the project," Priya said. Not a question.
Nisha was quiet for a moment.
"I've been looking at the exit terms," she said.
"I know. I could hear you thinking about it from across the city." A pause. "Tell me what you're afraid will happen if you stay."
Nisha told her. The exposure. The daily proximity. The possibility of Arjun deciding to act on what he knew — or what he suspected, or what he had concluded, she still didn't know exactly where he was — while she was in the same building and had no control over the timing.
Priya listened all the way through.
Then: "Now tell me what happens if you leave."
Nisha looked at the contract. The penalty clause. The studio's current financial position, which was substantially better than it had been four months ago and would be substantially worse if she triggered an early exit.
"The studio takes a significant hit," she said.
"And Arjun?"
"He — has the same information regardless. Whether I'm in that building or not."
"Yes," Priya said. "He does. Nisha, if he wants to do something with what he knows, he will do it whether you're working on his project or not. Leaving doesn't protect Aanya. It just costs you the work you earned."
Nisha sat with this.
"And," Priya added, in the quieter voice she used when she was about to say the thing she had been building toward, "running away has never been what you do. In four years of partnership, I have never once watched you run from something difficult. I'm not sure you should start now."
---
She picked up Aanya from her mother's house at five.
Her mother asked, in the way she asked things, if everything was all right. Nisha said yes. Her mother looked at her with the look that had been communicating *I know there is more* since Nisha was seven years old, and then let it be, because she was a woman who understood the difference between the moment for pressing and the moment for waiting.
In the taxi home, Aanya fell asleep against her shoulder.
The weight of it — the specific, warm, complete weight of a sleeping child who trusted the body they were sleeping on entirely — was something Nisha had never fully adjusted to. Eighteen months and it still arrived fresh every time. The trust in it. The complete, uncalculating certainty of a small person who had identified the safest place available and was using it without reservation.
She sat in the back of the taxi with the city moving past the windows and her daughter asleep on her shoulder and thought — not about Arjun, not about the contract, not about the early termination clause.
She thought about Wednesday evening. About the red bucket, passed from small hands to large ones. About her daughter's voice saying a word with the simple certainty of someone stating something they had worked out for themselves and found to be true.
About a man who had been sitting cross-legged on the grass and had received the bucket with both hands and had adjusted his technique when it was found imprecise.
There was, she understood, a version of fear that protected you. And there was a version that simply kept you running from things that had already caught up.
---
She put Aanya to bed at eight.
Then she went to her desk and opened the laptop and pulled up the Celestia contract.
She read the early termination clause once. Then she closed it.
She opened the phase four specification file instead — the document she had been building for three weeks, the work she was most proud of on this project, the culmination of four months of decisions that had been made carefully and correctly and that were going to produce something genuinely worth building.
She read through it. Made two notes for the morning.
Then she closed the laptop.
Tomorrow she would go into the building. She would do her work. She would be the designer she was and she would finish the project she had earned the right to finish.
And if Arjun Malhotra wanted to speak — about the park, about Wednesday, about a word said by a child who had reached her own conclusions on her own timeline — he knew where to find her.
She was done running from things that had already arrived.
She turned off the lamp.
In the next room, her daughter slept with the complete conviction of someone who had said what needed saying and was at peace with having said it.
Nisha thought: perhaps there was something to learn from that.
