He had stopped pretending, on Saturday morning, that he did not know where he was going.
This was a small thing — the abandonment of a fiction he had been maintaining primarily for his own benefit, the fiction of a man taking a walk rather than a man going somewhere specific with a purpose he had not yet fully named. He had stopped maintaining it somewhere between his front door and the park gate, and the relief of stopping was itself information.
He had also stopped, on Friday afternoon, in front of a small toy shop three blocks from the tower.
The window had contained the usual array of things that toy shops contained — blocks, stuffed animals, small vehicles in primary colours. The yellow one had been on the left side of the display, a small die-cast car barely larger than his thumb, the colour of sunflowers or the shirt she always seemed to be wearing or the paint she had apparently applied to every surface she had encountered in her eighteen months of existence.
He had gone in and bought it.
He had not examined this decision closely. He had learned, in the past two weeks, that some decisions were better acted on than examined, and that the examination could come later, when there was more information available and the framework for understanding what he had done had assembled itself more fully.
The car was in his jacket pocket.
He walked into the park.
---
She was already there.
Not Nisha — Aanya, with the sitter, in the eastern corner with the play equipment and the patch of grass that had apparently become, through the logic of repeated use, their specific location in this park. The red bucket was present. The yellow shirt was present. The left-side furrow was present, directed at the climbing frame with the focused attention of someone reviewing a previous performance and considering whether to repeat it.
She looked up when he came through the gate.
The furrow shifted — the recalibration of someone updating their assessment of the environment. Then something else moved through her expression, something that was not quite recognition in the way adults meant it but was its own category of the same thing: the specific response of a small person encountering a face that had been filed under a particular heading and was now appearing in the expected context.
She picked up the bucket.
Held it out.
Arjun walked across the grass and sat down.
---
They had established, over the course of two previous sessions, a working relationship.
This was how Arjun found himself thinking about it — not as an encounter, not as a visit, but as something with its own internal logic and expectations and allocation of roles. Aanya directed. He executed. The quality of his execution was assessed and either found adequate or corrected through demonstration. There was no ambiguity about the hierarchy.
He found, somewhat to his own surprise, that this was uncomplicated.
Most of his professional life involved being the person at the top of the hierarchy, the one whose assessments others waited for, whose corrections carried weight. To sit on the grass of a park and be corrected by someone eighteen months old on the correct technique for filling a small bucket — this was, he was discovering, not humiliating. It was something else entirely. Something he did not have a professional vocabulary for.
They worked for several minutes. Aanya provided direction. He provided labour. The bucket was filled to a specific level she had determined, emptied in a location she had designated, and refilled. The cycle had a logic he had stopped trying to understand and had simply accepted.
At some point, in the natural pause between one cycle and the next, he reached into his jacket pocket.
He set the yellow car on the grass in front of her.
Aanya looked at it.
The assessment was thorough — she turned it over with both hands, examined the wheels, ran a thumb along the roof. She found the small detail he had not noticed until she found it: a driver visible through the tiny windscreen, a painted figure barely two millimetres tall.
She looked at him.
He nodded. The car was hers.
She set it on the grass and pushed it forward, and the wheels turned, and she made a sound low in her throat that was the beginning of an engine noise, and Arjun sat on the grass and watched her play with it and felt something in his chest that was not a feeling he could name in any language he had been taught.
---
He did not notice her climbing into his lap.
This was, afterward, the detail he returned to most often — that there had been no moment of approach, no decision point he could identify. One moment she was on the grass in front of him with the yellow car and the next she was in his lap, having apparently determined, through whatever process she used for such determinations, that the position offered advantages the grass did not.
She sat there with the complete unselfconsciousness of someone who had assessed the available seating options and selected the best one.
She rolled the yellow car along his knee.
Arjun did not move.
Not because he was unwilling to move — because he was temporarily unable to, in the specific way that a person becomes temporarily unable to do ordinary things when something so far outside the range of their experience has just occurred that the ordinary mechanisms of response have not yet caught up.
The weight of her. Small — considerably smaller than he had abstractly understood a child of this age to be, light in the way that required adjustment, the specific compact solidity of a person in their first years who has not yet accumulated the weight of time. She sat in his lap with the total confidence of someone who had selected this location and saw no reason to justify the selection.
He became aware, eventually, of the sitter on the bench.
Her expression was the careful expression of someone observing a situation they had not anticipated and were in the process of deciding how to respond to. He met her eyes. He held them steadily, trying to communicate, without words, the things that needed to be communicated: that he was not a threat, that he understood the responsibility she was carrying, that the child in his lap had arrived under her own initiative and he was simply the territory she had chosen to occupy.
The sitter looked at Aanya.
Aanya was rolling the yellow car along his knee, making engine noises, entirely absorbed.
The sitter looked back at Arjun.
She settled back on the bench. Watching — she did not stop watching — but settled.
Arjun sat very still and let a child he had met four days ago use his knee as a road.
---
He heard the gate.
Not because it was loud — the park gate was not a loud gate. But he had, he realised, been in some portion of himself listening for it. The specific sound of it opening with purpose rather than with the casual movement of someone arriving without urgency.
He looked up.
Nisha was inside the gate already — she had seen them before the gate had fully closed behind her. He could tell this from the quality of her movement: the slight change in pace, the imperceptible adjustment of someone who had encountered a scene they had prepared for and found that preparation insufficient.
She came across the grass.
Not fast, not slow. The deliberate pace of someone covering distance they needed to cover.
She stopped five metres away.
She looked at Aanya, who was rolling the yellow car along Arjun's knee and producing engine sounds. She looked at Arjun, who was sitting very still with a child in his lap and looking back at her. She looked at the sitter, whose expression communicated, across the distance, a sincere apology for the situation she had not known how to prevent.
Nisha's face had no expression he had seen before.
Not the composure. Not the wariness. Not the unguarded quality of the late evenings. Something that existed underneath all of those — the expression of a person standing in a moment they had been carrying in dread for a long time, and finding that the dread had not prepared them any better than they had known it would.
---
"Mama."
Aanya had noticed.
She said the word with the specific joy she reserved for her mother's arrival — a full-body response, the yellow car abandoned mid-road, the dismount from Arjun's lap accomplished with the same unselfconscious efficiency as the mount. She ran the five metres across the grass in the way she ran: entirely committed, slightly more speed than her coordination fully supported, completely certain of her destination.
Nisha dropped down to meet her.
She caught her daughter and held her — and for a moment, her face was against Aanya's hair and her eyes were closed and the park and the morning and the man five metres away did not exist. Just: her daughter. The specific warmth and weight of the person she had organised her entire life around.
Arjun counted three seconds.
Then Nisha stood.
Aanya was on her hip, the yellow car discovered in her hand and being examined with renewed interest. Nisha looked at Arjun across the grass and the distance between them contained, without being stated, the full weight of eighteen months and a word said in a park four days ago and two people who had been circling the same truth from opposite directions for four months.
Arjun stood.
"We need to talk," he said.
Three words. The sentence that had been waiting in the park since Saturday, since Wednesday, since the moment he had sat down on a still-warm bench and understood what he understood.
Nisha looked at him.
She looked at Aanya, who had successfully reattached the yellow car's wheel, which had apparently come slightly loose, and was now conducting a road test on her mother's forearm.
She looked back at Arjun.
"Not today," she said.
Not a refusal. Not the careful deflection he had learned over four months of professional distance. Something with different contents — the voice of someone who had made a decision and was implementing it on their own terms, at a timing of their own choosing. She was not running. She was choosing when.
"When?" he said.
She held his gaze for a moment — the specific quality of a person accounting for all the variables of a decision they have already made.
"Monday," she said. "Your office. Six o'clock."
He nodded.
She turned and walked across the grass toward the gate, Aanya on her hip, the yellow car now being used to investigate the texture of her mother's jacket collar.
Arjun watched them go.
Aanya did not look back this time. She was absorbed in the collar investigation, which appeared to be yielding interesting data.
The gate closed.
He stood in the park in the Saturday morning with the empty red bucket on the grass and the small impression in the grass where they had been sitting and the echo of a time and a place — *Monday. Your office. Six o'clock.*
She had set the terms.
He found that he was not surprised by this. It was, he understood, exactly what she would do.
He looked at the empty place on the grass for a moment longer.
Then he walked home.
Monday was two days away.
He had, for the first time in two and a half years, something specific to wait for.
