Saturday had a different texture than the rest of the week.
Nisha had noticed this when Aanya was very small — in the early months when the days had blurred into each other and time had lost its ordinary shape entirely — that Saturday was the day she could breathe differently. Not deeper, necessarily. Just differently. With less management.
She was standing at the stove in her old college t-shirt and the cotton trousers she wore only at home, making pancakes with the assistance of an eighteen-month-old who had very strong opinions about the process and very limited accuracy in executing them.
"Aanya," Nisha said, for the third time, "the batter goes in the bowl."
Aanya regarded the batter she had deposited on the counter beside the bowl, and then regarded the bowl, and then looked up at her mother with the expression of someone who had considered the feedback and found it interesting but not necessarily actionable.
"Bowl," she said. Agreeably. And then reached for the ladle again.
Nisha caught the ladle, redirected it, and decided that the counter was washable and the morning was good and some things were not worth the negotiation. She pressed a kiss to the top of her daughter's head and returned to the stove.
The kitchen smelled like butter and cardamom. Outside the window, the city was doing its Saturday things — slower than weekdays, a different rhythm, the kind of morning that reminded you the world had a pace other than urgent. The crack in the bathroom ceiling had not gotten worse. Aanya had slept through the night. The pancakes were, despite everything, going to be fine.
This was enough. On mornings like this, it was more than enough.
---
After breakfast, Nisha washed the dishes while Aanya played on the mat in the living area — her current preferred occupation being a set of wooden building blocks in six colours and four shapes that her grandmother had brought two months ago and that had become, in Aanya's hands, an endlessly renewable source of intellectual engagement.
Nisha was drying the last bowl when she heard the quality of the silence change.
Not the silence of a child who had stopped playing. The silence of a child who had found something worth concentrating on.
She turned around.
Aanya had sorted the blocks. Not randomly — not in the loose, exploratory way she usually interacted with them. She had grouped them first by colour: all the red blocks together, all the blue, all the yellow. Then, within each colour group, by size, small to large. Then she had begun building within each group, stacking same-colour same-size blocks in precise columns with the focused deliberateness of someone solving a problem that had a correct answer and was worth finding.
She had her head tilted at a slight angle. Her brow was furrowed — just one side, the left, a small crease of concentration between her eye and her temple.
Nisha stood in the kitchen doorway with the dish towel in her hands and did not move.
She had seen that tilt. That furrow. The particular quality of that concentration — total, unhurried, entirely internal — in a face that was not her daughter's face and in a context she had spent two years constructing careful walls around.
Aanya reached for another block, assessed it, placed it with the precision of a small person who had decided that precision mattered and was not going to compromise on this.
Nisha sat down on the floor of the doorway, slowly, without deciding to.
She watched her daughter work.
For eighteen months she had been very disciplined about this. She had looked at Aanya and seen Aanya — her daughter, her person, the specific and entire human being she had grown and was raising and loved with the totality of everything she had. She had not let herself see the other thing. She had built that wall carefully and maintained it daily, and it had worked, mostly, except on the nights when it didn't.
But she had been spending five days a week in a building with Arjun Malhotra for three weeks now. She had been watching him read drawings and hold his pen and go still when he was thinking, and the wall was thinner than it had been in a long time.
Aanya looked up and found her mother sitting in the doorway.
"Mama," she said, with the satisfaction of someone completing a report. She held up a yellow block.
"I see," Nisha said. Her voice came out softer than she intended. "You sorted them."
Aanya considered this description, apparently found it accurate, and returned to her work.
Nisha stayed on the floor of the doorway and let herself look — really look, the way she usually didn't allow — at the left-side furrow, the tilted head, the quality of focus that was not hers and had never been hers and was present in her daughter's face as naturally and completely as breathing.
The fear that followed was not small.
It was the specific fear of someone who has been managing a very large and very fragile thing for a long time and has just become newly aware of how large and fragile it is. Not panic — she was past panic, had passed through panic in the early months and come out the other side into something more sustainable. This was quieter. More considered. The fear of a person who understands exactly what she is protecting and exactly how much she stands to lose.
Aanya placed the last block with a small sound of completion and looked up again, pleased.
Nisha smiled at her. It was not a performance — it was real, it was immediate, it was the smile that Aanya produced in her without effort. But underneath it, running parallel, was the other thing. The thing that had no smile.
---
Her mother arrived at noon.
Baa Meera came the way she always came — with food she had made that morning in quantities that assumed Nisha was not feeding herself adequately, which was not entirely inaccurate, and with the particular quality of attention that Nisha had grown up under and had never fully learned to be opaque to.
Aanya greeted her grandmother with the enthusiasm she reserved for people who could be reliably counted on to pick her up without being asked, and Baa Meera obliged, settling the child on her hip with the ease of someone who had done this for decades across multiple generations.
"You look tired," her mother said to Nisha, by way of hello.
"I'm fine, Maa."
"You always say that."
"It's usually true."
Her mother gave her the look that had been communicating *I know more than you are telling me* since Nisha was approximately seven years old, and then turned her attention to Aanya, who was attempting to remove Baa Meera's earring with the focused interest of a researcher examining a specimen.
They ate lunch at the small table by the window — rice and dal and the particular sabzi her mother made with mustard seeds and curry leaves that tasted specifically of every Sunday of Nisha's childhood. Aanya ate with the determined independence of a toddler who had opinions about using her own spoon, and the conversation moved through the ordinary landscape of family: her mother's neighbour, the repair work on the building's water tank, Nisha's younger cousin's upcoming engagement.
Then her mother set down her glass and said, lightly, the way she said things she had been waiting to say: "This new project — it's a big one?"
"The biggest I've had," Nisha said. "Full interior overhaul of a luxury hotel. Good for the studio."
"And the client?"
"Malhotra Hotel Group." Nisha reached for the water jug. "Large hospitality company. They have properties across six countries."
She said the company name. Not the name that lived inside the company name. She watched her mother's face for the thing she was not saying, and her mother's face was careful and gentle and gave nothing away, which meant she had heard it.
Baa Meera looked at Aanya, who was negotiating with her spoon.
"And it's going well?" her mother asked.
"It's going well," Nisha said.
Her mother nodded. She did not ask the question that was underneath the question she had asked. She would not ask it directly — that was not how her mother operated. She would wait, and she would be present, and when Nisha was ready to say the thing she was not saying, she would be there to hear it.
Nisha had always loved her mother for this. Today it made her chest ache in a way she couldn't entirely account for.
---
The park near their building had a small section of play equipment that Aanya regarded as a personal domain — a low climbing frame, two swings, a sandpit that she approached with the seriousness of a geologist examining a significant formation.
Nisha sat on the bench while her daughter made her assessment of the sandpit's current condition, and let the afternoon move around her. Other parents on other benches. A dog being walked with great enthusiasm by an elderly man who seemed equally enthusiastic. The particular quality of Saturday afternoon light, golden and unhurried.
Her phone buzzed.
Vikram, via the project management system: updated schedule for the following week. She opened it with the automatic efficiency of someone who checked work communications even on Saturdays and had made a certain peace with this.
She scanned the week. Monday, materials review. Tuesday — she stopped.
Tuesday: on-site inspection, floors ten through fourteen. Time: ten AM to one PM. Attending: CEO, project director, head contractor.
Her own calendar for Tuesday: team meeting with the tiling contractor, floor twelve. Ten-thirty.
Same floor. Same window of time. A construction site, not a conference room — closer quarters, less structure, no table to sit across from each other at.
Nisha looked at the schedule for a moment.
Then she looked up at Aanya, who had committed to the sandpit and was currently engaged in moving sand from one location to another with the systematic focus that Nisha was beginning to recognize as a signature mode.
The afternoon light caught her daughter's face — the curve of her cheek, still round with baby softness, and beneath it the line of her jaw that was beginning, just barely, to suggest the face she would grow into.
Aanya looked up from her work, found her mother watching, and smiled with her whole face — the smile that was entirely and only hers, uncomplicated and complete.
Nisha felt the decision form before she had consciously made it. Not a new decision — a reaffirmation of one she had been making, quietly and continuously, for eighteen months.
Whatever happened in that building. Whatever the Wednesday reviews became, or didn't become. However the next several months unfolded in conference rooms and construction sites and the careful professional distance she was maintaining with her entire body — Aanya was not part of that equation. Aanya would never be part of that equation.
The secret was not selfishness. She had made her peace with that a long time ago, on a night much harder than this one. It was protection — of the small person in the sandpit, of the life they had built, of the fragile and specific world that was theirs alone.
She held that decision the way you hold something that needs to be held with both hands.
"Mama," Aanya called, holding up a fistful of sand with the air of a significant discovery.
"Incredible," Nisha told her.
Aanya looked satisfied and returned to her work.
---
The evening followed its usual architecture. Bath — a negotiation. Dinner — a smaller negotiation. The first story, then the inevitable request for the second, then the gradual subsidence into sleep that Nisha had timed, over many nights, at approximately eleven minutes from the moment the second story ended.
She sat on the floor of Aanya's room after — her spot, the one she had occupied since the very first nights when the apartment had been too quiet and too large and she had needed to be near the sound of her daughter breathing. The nightlight cast its familiar warmth. Aanya slept with her arms flung wide, claiming the full geography of her small bed, a habit she had developed early and showed no signs of revising.
Nisha sat in the quiet and let the question come.
She had been keeping it at a distance for three weeks — busy enough, tired enough, disciplined enough. But tonight, with the afternoon still in her, with the image of Aanya sorting blocks still present and specific, she let it form completely.
*If he knew — what would happen?*
She did not have an answer. She had never allowed herself to build one, because building an answer required imagining the scenario in detail, and imagining the scenario in detail required imagining him knowing, and imagining him knowing required standing in a version of the future she had not given herself permission to look at.
But the question existed. She let it exist, tonight, in the quiet room.
That was different from before. She wasn't sure yet what it meant.
---
She was brushing her teeth when she remembered she hadn't checked the project inbox since mid-afternoon.
She checked it from habit, standing at the bathroom sink, expecting Vikram's standard end-of-week summary.
There was one email she hadn't seen.
It was not from Vikram's address. It was from a personal address she didn't have saved — but the initials in the display name were clear enough. Sent at six forty-seven in the evening.
One line of text. One attachment.
*Thought this might be relevant for the suite concept. — A.M.*
The attachment was a research paper. Academic, peer-reviewed — she could tell from the formatting. The subject: psychological responses to colour in hospitality environments, with specific attention to memory formation and return-visit motivation.
She opened it. Someone had read it carefully — there were highlights throughout, the kind that accumulated when a person is reading something and finding it useful, marking the passages that change or confirm or complicate their thinking. The section on warm chromatic palettes and perceived luxury had three separate annotations.
He had read this today. On a Saturday evening. And sent it to her — not through Vikram, not through the project system, not with any of the careful professional infrastructure that had been mediating their interactions for three weeks. From his own address. With his initials, not his title.
*A.M.* Not *Arjun Malhotra, CEO, Malhotra Hotel Group.*
Nisha stood at her bathroom sink for a long time, looking at her phone screen.
Then she closed the email, plugged in her phone, and turned off the light.
In the morning she would read the paper properly and decide what to do about it. In the morning things would be clear and practical and she would know exactly how to respond in a way that was professional and appropriate and kept everything exactly where it needed to be.
In the morning.
She lay in the dark and listened to the city and thought about highlighted paragraphs and a signature that had dropped its title, and it was a very long time before she slept.
You've reached the end of this chapter
