The weight was wrong.
Arjun had been training with the same progression for eleven months — the same sequence, the same increments, the same disciplined accumulation of effort that had produced the kind of physical exhaustion he could use to end a day or begin one. He knew exactly what each set should feel like. This morning, nothing felt like it was supposed to.
He checked his phone at five-twelve.
No new emails.
He set the phone face-down on the bench and picked up the barbell again.
The paper he had sent was relevant to the project. He had been reading it for unrelated reasons — a research habit he maintained because the hospitality industry moved faster than most people tracked, and staying informed was simply good practice. When he reached the section on warm chromatic anchors and memory formation, he had thought of the suite palette argument. Of the counter-data she had brought to the table. Of the fact that she had been right about something he had dismissed too quickly, and that being right about it had implications he hadn't fully worked through yet.
Sending it was a professional courtesy. The kind of thing you did when you were running a major project and wanted your lead designer to have access to relevant research.
He checked his phone at five-thirty-one.
Still nothing.
He increased the weight and stopped checking.
---
The floor twelve inspection was on his calendar for ten o'clock, which meant he was there at nine fifty-five, which was how he arrived everywhere — early enough to see the space before the meeting began, to form his own impressions before other people's assessments overlaid them.
The twelfth floor was mid-construction: raw concrete in some sections, framing complete in others, the particular atmosphere of a space that was becoming rather than being. He walked it with the project director and the head contractor, moving through the eastern suites first, checking progress against the sequencing timeline, noting two items that needed follow-up on the window installation.
It was a routine inspection. He had done hundreds like it.
He was examining the corner junction of the main corridor when he heard her.
Not her words — the acoustic conditions of an active construction floor absorbed most of that. Just her voice, its specific register, coming from somewhere near the north end of the corridor. The particular quality of it when she was explaining something she understood completely — a note of focus in it, clean and unhurried.
Arjun was holding a structural report.
He did not put it down and walk toward the sound.
He also did not walk in the other direction, which was where the next item on his inspection list was located.
He stood for a moment, which was not a thing he ordinarily did on site visits, and then walked toward the north end of the corridor at a pace that could reasonably be described as purposeful.
She was standing with three members of the tiling contractor's team, her back partially to him, a set of drawings rolled under one arm and a second set open in her hands. She was wearing the project's mandatory site gear — hard hat slightly askew in the way it always was on people who forgot to check, safety vest over her work clothes. She was pointing at a section of the unfinished wall and saying something about grout line alignment that the contractor was writing down.
She didn't know he was there.
Arjun had observed Nisha Sharma in professional settings for three weeks now. He had watched her in conference rooms and review sessions and the controlled environment of the Wednesday meetings, where both of them were, at all times, performing some version of a professional self. He knew what that looked like.
This was different.
Without an audience that included him, she moved through the space with an ease that the conference room version of her didn't quite have — the slight loosening of the careful posture, the way she gestured more freely when she was explaining something to people she wasn't managing her impression with. She laughed at something the contractor said, a short genuine sound, and reached out to tap the wall at a specific point to illustrate what she meant.
The mask was still there. It was simply thinner.
Arjun became aware that he had stopped walking.
He was standing at the junction of the main corridor and the north branch, holding a structural report, watching a woman explain grout alignment to a tiling contractor, and he had been standing there for long enough that his project director had glanced at him once with a carefully neutral expression and then found something to look at in the other direction.
He started walking again.
She heard him — or heard the footsteps, or simply became aware of a change in the space — and turned.
The moment of recognition was small and immediate and entirely controlled. Her expression moved from open to professional in the space of less than a second, and then she nodded, the way you nod to a senior colleague on a shared worksite, and he nodded back, and they continued their separate work in the same space as though the last three weeks had not produced anything worth noting.
He was aware of her position in the corridor for every one of the next forty minutes.
This was inconvenient and unhelpful and he was fully aware of both of those things, and the awareness changed nothing.
---
The question about the lighting came from the head contractor — a practical man named Subramaniam who had been running construction projects for twenty-five years and had the efficient communication style of someone who had learned to ask the right person directly rather than work through channels.
"The recessed lighting positions in this section," he said to Arjun, consulting his own drawings. "Ms. Sharma revised the specification last week. I want to confirm the intent before we frame the housings — once they're in, repositioning is expensive."
Arjun looked at the drawing. He had reviewed the revision — he reviewed all design revisions on the Celestia project — but the specific positioning logic in this section was something he had noted as requiring clarification.
"Ask Ms. Sharma," Subramaniam said, already looking down the corridor.
Arjun did not need to be told this was sensible. He called across the space.
She came, drawing tube under her arm, and the three of them stood at the relevant section of wall — no table, no conference room geometry, no careful management of seating arrangements. Just a construction corridor with fluorescent work lighting overhead and a drawing spread against an unfinished wall between them.
She explained the positioning logic. It was good logic — he could follow it immediately, the way each light placement created a specific effect at a specific time of day, how the spacing produced a rhythm that would read differently depending on where you were standing in the space. She spoke to Subramaniam directly, which was correct, because he was the one who needed to understand it.
But she was standing close enough that when she reached forward to indicate a measurement on the drawing, her hand passed near his on the paper, and there was a moment — brief, ordinary in any other context, entirely not ordinary in this one — when he was aware of it with a specificity that had nothing to do with lighting specifications.
He kept his attention on the drawing.
Subramaniam made his notes and asked two follow-up questions, both of which she answered clearly, and then he excused himself to brief his team and left them standing at the section of wall with the drawing still spread against it.
Nisha began rolling it back up.
Arjun said: "Did you get the email I sent?"
He had not planned to ask. The question arrived fully formed from somewhere that had been composing it since five-twelve that morning without his permission.
She stopped rolling the drawing.
Looked at him.
"Yes," she said.
"And?"
A pause — the specific pause of someone deciding how much to give. He had watched her do this in meetings: the brief internal calculation, the selection of what to offer and what to hold back.
"I'll address it in this week's report," she said.
Professional. Complete. A door opened exactly one centimetre and then held precisely there.
He nodded.
She finished rolling the drawing, tucked it under her arm, and walked back toward her contractor team.
Arjun stood at the unfinished wall for a moment.
Then he looked down at the structural report he was still holding and found the next item on his inspection list and continued his morning in the way mornings were supposed to continue, which was forward and purposeful and not standing in construction corridors watching the specific way a person walked when they thought no one was paying attention.
---
The office was empty by eight.
This was normal. This was how he preferred it — the building settling into quiet, the city outside taking on its night character, the particular clarity that came when the demands of the day had exhausted themselves and left him alone with whatever remained.
Usually what remained was work. He was good at this version of the evening. It was uncomplicated.
Tonight he sat at his desk for ten minutes without opening anything.
Then he opened the bottom drawer.
He hadn't opened it in a long time. He was not certain, sitting here now, of the last occasion — somewhere in the first year, probably, before he had fully committed to the project of not thinking about things that didn't serve any productive purpose. There were files in the drawer, older documents, things that had migrated there when his desk was reorganized. Under those, near the back, where it had ended up in some reshuffle of the drawer's contents months ago:
A photograph. Small — printed from a phone, the kind of casual print that used to come from pharmacy kiosks when people still did that. The paper had gone slightly soft at one corner from being moved around. The image was still clear.
Two people in it. A rooftop somewhere — not this city, a different one, a weekend trip that had been uncomplicated and good in the specific way that things are uncomplicated and good when you don't yet know they are going to end. She was laughing at something outside the frame. He was looking at her laughing, which he had apparently done without noticing that someone had taken a photograph.
He didn't remember the photograph being taken. He had found it in his phone's camera roll much later, uploaded by accident when they had swapped phones for some practical reason he no longer remembered.
He had printed it. He didn't remember deciding to do that either.
Arjun sat and looked at it for a while.
Then he put it back where it had been, beneath the files, in the back of the drawer.
He closed the drawer.
He did not lock it.
He sat for another moment in the quiet office, with the city spread out below and the lamplight doing what lamplight does to a room, and he thought about the way she had been standing in the construction corridor before she knew he was there. The ease of it. The thinness of the mask.
He thought: *she is not the person you decided she was two years ago.*
He had no idea what to do with that thought, so he opened his laptop and navigated to his inbox and prepared to begin the evening's work.
There was a new message.
From a personal address he had only seen once before — his own email, sent back to him, in a manner of speaking. Nine forty-seven PM. No greeting, no sign-off, no professional formalities.
Just: *Page 14, third paragraph. You were right about the warm chromatic anchor. I was approaching it from the wrong direction. — N.*
Not her full name. Not her title. Not any of the careful professional distance that had been maintained across every other communication for three weeks.
Just *N.*
Arjun read it three times.
The third time, he was aware of something that had not been there before — or rather, something that had been there and that he had been successfully not naming, which was a different thing. It was the specific feeling of a door that you have been holding shut for a long time, and which has just, very slightly, moved.
He looked at the closed drawer.
He looked back at the screen.
He began to type.
