Priya's video call connected at exactly noon, Chloe balancing her laptop on a stack of press kits in the corner of an empty conference room she'd claimed for privacy, and the first thing Chloe noticed was the particular energy of someone who'd been rehearsing good news for the better part of a morning.
"Silverline wants to move the timeline up," Priya said, without preamble. "They're calling it 'accelerated development' internally, which is agent-speak for someone above them got excited and now everyone downstream has to scramble. The upside is momentum. The downside is the disclosure requirements aren't going to wait as long as we'd hoped."
"How not long are we talking?"
"They want your legal name locked into the option agreement within three weeks. It stays sealed in the contract, not public — that part hasn't changed. But there's a second piece." Priya hesitated, which was, in itself, unusual enough to make Chloe's stomach drop before the sentence finished. "Their marketing team wants an author interview to accompany the announcement. Anonymous is fine, apparently — voice disguised, no face, no name — but they want it recorded within the next two weeks, timed to the option announcement."
"An interview. Recorded. About what, exactly?"
"The book. Where it came from. What inspired it." Priya's tone gentled, the way it did when she sensed Chloe spiraling before Chloe had fully admitted to herself that she was. "You don't have to answer anything you don't want to. But they need something to build a press narrative around, and 'mysterious anonymous author declined to discuss anything' isn't exactly the momentum they're hoping to create."
Chloe closed her eyes briefly, doing math she'd been avoiding for weeks — the interview, the sealed legal name, the timeline collapsing from some comfortable, distant future into something with an actual date attached to it now.
"Two weeks," she said.
"Two weeks," Priya confirmed. "I know it's fast. I know everything else in your life right now is apparently also extremely complicated, judging by the very short answers you've been giving me on the phone lately. But this is good news, Chloe. This is the thing you've wanted."
"I know," Chloe said, and meant it, even as the ground under the wanting felt considerably less stable than it had a month ago. "What if I don't want the interview to happen at all," Chloe said, quieter than she meant to.
"Then we tell them no, and I'll manage Silverline's disappointment, and the deal probably survives it just fine because the manuscript is good enough to carry itself without a mystique campaign." Priya's voice softened further. "But I don't think that's actually what you're asking me. I think you're asking whether it's safe to still be scared of this, even though it's the good kind of scary. And the answer's yes. You're allowed to be terrified of good news. Most people are."
Chloe laughed, unexpectedly, surprised into it. "When did you get so wise?"
"Agenting for six years will do that. Mostly I've just watched enough writers panic through good news to recognize the shape of it from across a room." A pause. "Talk to me when you're ready. No pressure on the two weeks beyond what Silverline's already put on us."
"Thank you, Priya."
"Go celebrate something today. Even something small. You've earned it."
Chloe promised she would, and didn't, and hung up feeling the particular, familiar guilt of having lied to someone who genuinely wanted good things for her.
Priya had signed off with a promise to follow up by end of week, and Chloe had sat afterward at the empty conference table considerably longer than the call had actually taken, staring at nothing in particular, running through the math of who exactly she'd need to protect first if the timeline collapsed entirely — her career, her identity, or, increasingly and most confusingly, the fragile unnamed thing sitting across a kitchen island from her most evenings, currently under the impression that she was simply tired.
---
That evening, dinner was Ethan's idea — a rare night with no board obligations, no gala, nothing requiring either of them to perform anything for anyone, just takeout containers and the kitchen island and the particular ease that had settled between them over the past several weeks without either of them quite naming it.
"There's apparently some novel everyone at the office is talking about," Ethan said, midway through a container of pad see ew, entirely unaware of the ground shifting beneath the sentence as he said it. "Reyes mentioned it in passing. Something about a corporate satire, anonymous author, picked up for a film option. Half of communications seems to think they know who it's based on."
Chloe's chopsticks paused, precisely, for a fraction of a second too long.
"Do they," she said, aiming for casual and landing somewhere closer to strangled.
"Apparently it's making the rounds as office gossip. Reyes thinks it might be loosely inspired by some CEO in the industry — nobody's landed on a name yet, which is apparently half the fun for everyone speculating." He glanced at her, an easy, unbothered glance that had absolutely no idea what it was doing to her pulse. "You've gone pale. Are you all right?" "You should read it," Ethan added, entirely oblivious to the small earthquake he was causing across the kitchen island. "Reyes says it's genuinely well-written, not just gossip-worthy. Sharp. Apparently there's a whole chapter about a CEO who fires someone for turning in a birthday card a day late, which she thought was the funniest thing she's read all year."
"That does sound funny," Chloe managed, in a voice that sounded, to her own ears, roughly three octaves too tight.
"I might actually pick it up, once it's more widely available. I could use something that skewers people like me. Keeps a person honest." He said it lightly, entirely unaware of the specific horror the sentence induced, and reached for more noodles, and Chloe spent several seconds staring at a spring roll, trying to reconstruct her own face into something resembling normal.
"Fine," Chloe said, too quickly, setting her chopsticks down with more care than the gesture required. "Just — tired. Long day."
"You've had a lot of those lately." Something in his tone shifted, careful, the way it did when he was choosing not to press a door he'd noticed was closed. "You've seemed distracted all week. If something's going on, you don't have to tell me the details. But I'd notice if you needed space, or help, or just someone to not ask questions for a while."
It was, she registered distantly, possibly the kindest thing anyone had said to her in months, and it made the guilt sitting under her ribs considerably heavier rather than lighter, because the thing distracting her was sitting directly across the table from her, eating pad see ew, entirely unaware that he was one accidental conversation away from discovering exactly who she was.
He was quiet a moment, watching her with an expression she couldn't quite read. "You don't have to tell me what it is. I'm just letting you know I've noticed, and that I'm not going to pretend I haven't, even if I'm also not going to push."
"That's a very specific kind of considerate."
"I've had a lot of practice noticing things I'm not allowed to ask about," he said, something wry and a little tired in it, and Chloe wondered, not for the first time, exactly how much of his own life he'd spent learning that particular skill, and at what cost.
"I appreciate that," she said, which was true, and left it there, which felt, increasingly, like the only honest thing she was currently capable of doing.
---
The charity gala invitation had arrived weeks earlier, tucked among a stack of engagements neither of them had prioritized until Reyes flagged it as important — a smaller event than the Crestwood gala, more intimate, exactly the kind of appearance the board wanted photographed for its warmth rather than its scale.
"We should probably rehearse," Ethan said, the following evening, standing somewhat stiffly in the middle of the living room while Chloe circled him with the assessing eye of someone evaluating a mannequin. "The photographs from the last event were — Reyes's word, not mine — 'clinically distant.'"
Reyes had emailed the event details that morning with her usual efficiency — a children's hospital fundraiser, smaller donor base, the kind of cause that photographed as sincere rather than strategic, exactly the sort of appearance the board hoped would soften Ethan's image after weeks of headlines about boardroom maneuvering. Chloe had read through the guest list twice, flagging two attendees with known ties to gossip columns, before turning her attention to the more immediate problem of Ethan's posture.
"You're doing the thing again," she said, circling him a second time. "The thing where you look like you're being deposed."
"I don't have a resting expression that isn't this."
"Everyone has a resting expression that isn't 'being deposed,' Ethan. Even Marcus, somehow, and he's actively terrifying." She adjusted his shoulders, gently, feeling the tension in them ease slightly under her hands despite his obvious skepticism about the entire exercise. "Think about something you actually enjoy. Just for a second."
"I enjoy contract law."
"That's deeply concerning, but sure, try that."
He huffed something that was almost a laugh, and for a moment, unguarded, something genuinely lighter crossed his features — and Chloe found herself staring at it a beat too long, cataloguing it the way she catalogued everything, except this time for reasons that had stopped being professional several days ago without her quite noticing the transition.
"Reyes isn't wrong. You stood next to me at the Crestwood gala like I was a briefcase you were minding for someone else."
"I wasn't aware there was a technique."
"There's absolutely a technique." She stepped closer, positioning his hand at the small of her back the way he'd done, instinctively and far more naturally, at the family dinner weeks ago. "Like this. Not stiff. Like you'd rather be here than in a board meeting, which I realize may be a stretch for you emotionally."
"I would, actually," he said, quietly, and something in the admission landed differently than she expected, warm and unguarded in a way his voice rarely allowed.
She adjusted his other hand, guiding it, showing him where to look — not at the camera, but at her, the way real couples looked at each other in photographs, unposed, caught mid-laugh or mid-conversation rather than staring dead-eyed into a lens. He was a quick study, adjusting immediately, and something about the ease of his focus, entirely on her, made the practiced professional distance she usually maintained begin, dangerously, to blur.
"Like this?" he asked, low, close enough now that she could feel the warmth of him without quite touching.
"Exactly like that," she said, and heard her own voice come out quieter than she'd intended. Neither of them spoke for what felt like a long time, though it was probably only seconds — the apartment silent except for the low hum of the refrigerator and the sound of her own pulse, absurdly loud, filling the space between them. Chloe was aware, with a clarity that felt almost dangerous, of every point of contact: his hand at her back, warm through the thin fabric of her shirt; her palm against his chest, feeling the steady, slightly too-fast rhythm underneath it; the particular quality of his attention, which had stopped being about photography technique several minutes ago and hadn't been reclassified as anything else yet.
They stood like that a moment too long, the rehearsal having quietly stopped being a rehearsal several seconds earlier without either of them formally acknowledging it, his hand steady at her back, her palm resting against his chest where she'd placed it to demonstrate proximity, and Chloe became abruptly, acutely aware of how close his mouth was to hers, how the space between them had narrowed to something that no longer had anything to do with photography technique.
His eyes dropped, briefly, to her mouth. Hers did the same. Neither of them moved away.
"Chloe," he said, low, uncertain in a way she'd never heard from him, and she felt herself leaning forward, fractionally, an inch that felt like the entire distance of the past several weeks compressed into a single decision neither of them had planned to make tonight —
For days afterward, she'd replay the specific sound of her own name in his voice, low and uncertain, stripped of every layer of composure she'd come to associate with him — the CEO voice, the board-meeting voice, the careful voice he used with Marcus. This had been none of those. This had simply been Ethan, unguarded, and it frightened her considerably more than the eleven-second clip ever had.
Her phone rang, loud and sudden in the quiet apartment, the ringtone she'd assigned specifically to Priya cutting through the moment like a blade.
They both stepped back at exactly the same instant, as though choreographed, and Chloe's hand went, reflexively, to smooth hair that hadn't actually been disturbed, buying herself a half-second she desperately needed.
"I should get that," she said.
"Of course," Ethan said, already turning, his voice carefully neutral again, the warmth from thirty seconds ago folding itself back into something more composed, more contained, more like the man she'd first seen stepping out of an elevator weeks ago.
She answered the call in her bedroom, heart still going faster than the conversation with Priya about interview logistics strictly warranted, and neither of them mentioned, that night or for several days afterward, exactly how close they'd come to something neither of them had a clause in the contract to cover.
She sat on the edge of her bed afterward, phone still warm in her hand, Priya's logistics questions barely registered, and thought about the version of tonight where the phone hadn't rung — where she'd let the inch close entirely, where six weeks of careful professional distance had simply, finally, given way. She wasn't sure whether to be grateful to Priya or furious with her, and settled, eventually, on something closer to relief that the decision had been taken out of her hands before she'd had to make it consciously.
---
She couldn't sleep. She tried, for nearly an hour, lying in the dark replaying the moment in a loop she couldn't seem to interrupt — his hand at her back, the low uncertainty in his voice when he'd said her name, the specific, unbearable nearness of his mouth before the phone had rescued or ruined the moment, she genuinely couldn't decide which.
Eventually she gave up on sleep entirely and opened her laptop, pulling up the document she hadn't touched properly in over a week, intending to force herself back into some kind of productive routine.
She typed three sentences about Adrian Cross before she stopped, staring at what she'd written, feeling something cold settle in her stomach.
*He looked at her the way a man looks at something he's afraid to want — carefully, at first, and then not carefully at all.*
It wasn't Adrian. It had never sounded less like Adrian in sixty-four chapters of trying to build him as a villain. She deleted the line, then retyped a version of it, then deleted that too, and sat for a long time in the glow of the screen with the growing, uncomfortable understanding that somewhere in the past six weeks, without her permission, her own manuscript had started writing about someone else entirely.
She thought about deleting the paragraph entirely and starting the chapter fresh in the morning, when her judgment might be less compromised by the memory of a hand at her back and a voice saying her name like it cost him something to say it. But some stubborn, honest part of her — the same part that had cost her a job once for refusing to lie in writing — left the paragraph exactly where it was, unfinished, waiting for her to decide what to do with a manuscript that no longer entirely belonged to the story she'd meant to tell.
Down the hall, she knew without checking, Ethan's light was still on.
---
Priya's message arrived the next morning, cheerful and entirely oblivious to the previous night's near-collision, timestamped just past eight.
*Confirmed with Silverline — they want the interview recorded within two weeks, timed to the option announcement. I know it's fast. I know you've got a lot going on. But this is happening, Chloe, whether we're ready or not. Call me when you can, we need to talk logistics.*
Chloe read it twice, standing in her kitchen with coffee going cold in her hand, and felt the two halves of her life — the one where she was quietly, carefully falling for a man she'd married for a contract, and the one where that same man was about to be handed, however unknowingly, the exact evidence he'd need to recognize himself as the villain in her novel — finally, unmistakably, begin their collision course toward each other. She thought about calling Priya back immediately to ask for more time, more room to breathe before the interview locked itself into an unmovable date. She didn't. Some exhausted, realistic part of her understood that more time wouldn't actually make the underlying problem smaller — it would simply give her more days to sit with the same impossible arithmetic, the growing feelings on one side of the ledger and the widening secret on the other, both accounts overdue, neither one showing any sign of resolving itself quietly.
She didn't finish the interview logistics that morning. She sat instead, coffee going fully cold now, thinking about the space between what she'd already told him and what she still hadn't, and about how quickly that space was closing whether she was ready for it or not.
