The town hall was at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon.
Seo-yeon had known this for two weeks — it had been on the department calendar since Team Leader Park circulated the notice — and had approached the interval between the notice and the event with the same methodology she applied to other things that required preparation: identify the relevant variables, address the ones that could be addressed in advance, and accept that the remaining ones would be navigated in real time.
The relevant variables had been addressed. The HR disclosure was on record. The consumer trial project was formally concluded. The reporting line that had been the only structural connection between her desk and the CEO's office had ended with the project.
What remained was a department meeting. She had attended many department meetings. This one had a CEO present, which was unusual but not unprecedented. She had attended those as well.
She printed the agenda, which Jae-hyuk had circulated that morning with the efficiency that characterized all of his administrative work. She reviewed it once. She made a second coffee. She reviewed her notes from the past quarter's R&D work in case any of the agenda items touched on her projects.
At one fifty she took the stairs to the sixth floor.
The large conference room was already half-full when she arrived. She found a seat in the middle section — the position she occupied at most full-department gatherings. Not the front row, where Team Leader Park and the other department leads were already arranging their materials. Not the back, where the people who needed to leave early sat. The middle, with a clear sightline to the presentation screen, enough space for note-taking, and no particular proximity to anything that would require managing.
She opened her notebook to a fresh page. Wrote the date and the meeting title. Arranged her pen at the ready.
The room continued to fill. She recognized most of the faces — the formulations team, the sensory panel coordinators, the junior analysts who had been onboarded in the spring. Fourteen people in total, plus the presenter and Jae-hyuk, who arrived a few minutes before the hour and positioned himself at the far corner of the room with the particular efficiency of someone who had attended many of these and knew his correct position without needing to think about it.
Oh Dasom sat beside her and opened her notebook. "Big day," she said.
"It's a meeting," Seo-yeon said.
"A meeting with the CEO."
"Still a meeting," Seo-yeon said.
Oh Dasom looked at her with the expression of someone who had decided not to press a point and returned to her notebook.
---
Do-yoon arrived at two o'clock exactly.
He came in with Jae-hyuk one step behind, in the established pattern for his formal department appearances — the quality of someone who had been moving through professional spaces for long enough that the movement was automatic, calibrated, requiring no conscious performance.
He set his materials on the presenter's table and looked around the room once — the brief orienting scan that speakers performed to locate their audience before beginning. His gaze moved across the rows at a consistent pace: the department leads in the front row, the senior staff in the second, the middle rows where the bulk of the team sat, the back where two junior analysts had positioned themselves near the door.
It passed over Seo-yeon's section of the middle row with the same speed it passed over everything else.
She had thought about this moment in the weeks leading up to it — had thought about whether she would feel the need to manage her own response to being in this room, whether the professional mode would require effort or would simply be available. She had assessed, based on the evidence of the past several months, that it would simply be available. She had been right. The professional mode was available. She was using it. It required nothing unusual from her.
She wrote the first agenda item heading in her notebook and settled into the posture she used for meetings where she intended to retain what was said.
She had been to many presentations. She had been to presentations that required the appearance of attention while the actual attention was elsewhere. This was not that. She was here, in this room, as a member of the R&D department listening to the company's strategic direction for the year ahead. That was her role in the room and it was a real role and it required her actual attention.
She gave it her actual attention.
Two rows ahead, she could see the back of Team Leader Park's head and his pen already moving across his own notebook. At the corner of the room, Jae-hyuk had positioned himself with his tablet and his usual stillness. In her peripheral vision, Oh Dasom had arranged three different colored pens beside her notebook with the organized energy of someone who took notes in a system.
The room settled. Do-yoon opened the presentation.
---
The town hall proceeded with the quality of a well-organized meeting run by someone who had prepared the material and respected the audience's time.
Do-yoon moved through the strategic priorities methodically: the company's product development direction for the coming year, the R&D department's specific role in that direction, the areas where investment was increasing and the reasoning behind each decision. He did not present the reasoning as a formality — he presented it because the people in the room needed to understand not only what was happening but why, so that their work could serve the strategy rather than simply execute a list.
Seo-yeon took notes with the focused attention she brought to information she intended to retain. The presentation was good — organized, substantive, clear about both the priorities and the constraints. She had attended presentations at previous companies that had the form of clarity without the substance. This one had both.
In the section on consumer products, he spoke about sensory authenticity as a product development principle: the idea that technical accuracy alone was insufficient, that a product needed to meet the standard held by someone who had grown up with it and understood what it was supposed to be at the level of long familiarity rather than specification.
The language was not from her October report verbatim. It was the same thinking, expressed in his own words, arrived at from the same place.
She wrote *sensory authenticity* in her notebook.
She had written that phrase, or the concept it named, into three different documents across the past year. She had not expected to hear it used at a company town hall by the CEO. She had also, she recognized, been paying attention to the evidence that he read what was put in front of him carefully and for long enough that it changed how he thought.
She made a second note — an asterisk beside the first — and returned her attention to the rest of the presentation.
The section on formulations covered the expanded investment in natural ingredient sourcing and regional flavor authenticity — a direction she had been advocating for in methodology notes for the past year and a half. She noted this with the specific satisfaction of someone whose work had contributed to a direction without needing to be present when the direction was decided.
The presentation covered six areas in total. Each one was substantive. She retained all of it.
When he finished, there was a brief pause of the kind that occurred when a room was absorbing a well-presented set of information, and then Team Leader Park raised his hand for the Q&A.
---
The Q&A opened with Team Leader Park on budget allocation — a detailed question about the increase in development materials funding, which received a detailed answer. Then someone from formulations on timeline: when would the new priorities be reflected in project assignments. Then a junior analyst on performance evaluation criteria, which Seo-yeon noted had been well prepared and received a clearer answer than those questions usually got.
Then Oh Dasom raised her hand.
Seo-yeon became very interested in the notes she had been taking.
"The consumer trial project," Oh Dasom said, in the tone of someone who had been waiting to ask this since the presentation ended and was glad the opening had arrived. "The direct reporting structure to CEO level was unusual for a product development project at this stage. But the result was strong — 4.7 passed QA last week. Is that a model we'd consider for future projects that have similar potential?"
The margin notation Seo-yeon was making occupied approximately four millimeters of notebook space and communicated nothing to anyone, including herself. She was aware, without looking in that direction, of Jae-hyuk's position at the corner of the room. She was aware that Jae-hyuk was not looking at her either.
"The structure for that project reflected the specific needs of that development phase," Do-yoon said. His register was the one he used for questions he had considered in advance — even, precise, containing exactly what was needed and nothing that would require a follow-up question. "When a project is at the intersection of technical development and strategic commercial decisions, a closer communication line can accelerate the iteration cycle. For future projects we'd assess whether the same conditions apply before using a similar structure."
Oh Dasom wrote this down with the focused energy of someone who had received a useful answer. "That makes sense," she said.
The room moved to the next question.
Seo-yeon's margin notation was complete. She moved the pen back to the standard position and paid attention to the rest of the Q&A, which produced two more reasonable questions and no further complications.
The meeting concluded at three fifteen. Exactly as scheduled.
She had been in professional meetings where the most difficult moments were the ones she had not anticipated. This had not been that kind of meeting. She had anticipated the most likely difficulty correctly, and the difficulty had been handled correctly, and the meeting had proceeded to its conclusion as a normal meeting.
This was what adequate preparation felt like from the inside: not the absence of difficulty, but the difficulty arriving in the form you had expected and being managed with the tools you had prepared. She had helped prepare those tools. So had he. The result was a department meeting that had been, in all observable respects, a department meeting.
---
After the meeting, the room dispersed in the usual way of department gatherings — the clusters of conversation at the door, people collecting their notebooks and moving toward their respective floors, the particular energy of a group that has just received information and is beginning to process it in conversation.
Seo-yeon was making her way toward the door when Jae-hyuk appeared briefly in her peripheral vision, moving in a different direction, and said — without stopping, without looking at her — three words: "You handled that."
She kept walking. He kept walking. Neither of them paused.
Team Leader Park caught up with her in the corridor.
"Good meeting," Park said, with the energized quality of someone who had just received more investment budget than expected. "He's serious about R&D this year. I think we're going to be busy."
"Good," Seo-yeon said. "I work better when I'm busy."
"Me too." Park glanced at his notes. "I want to talk about next quarter's project priorities this week. Can we schedule something?"
"Thursday morning," Seo-yeon said. "Before eleven."
"Done." He moved toward the stairs. "Good Q&A, by the way. Not you specifically — just the session. No one said anything too strange."
"No," Seo-yeon agreed. "No one said anything too strange."
She took the elevator back to seven.
In the elevator, she thought about the meeting in the way she processed most things she needed to assess: methodically, starting with the facts before moving to the evaluation. The presentation had been substantive and well-organized. The Q&A had produced four useful questions and one question she had not been looking forward to and which had been handled exactly as well as it could have been handled. The room had dispersed without incident.
Jae-hyuk had said three words as he passed her.
She had, she acknowledged, handled it. Not through performance — through the groundwork that had been laid in the weeks before, the HR disclosure that made the formal record accurate, the agreement between two people about how to be in the same professional space without making the professional space into something it was not.
Team Leader Park had said they were going to be busy next year. She found, thinking about it in the elevator, that she was looking forward to being busy. The work was the work, and the work was good, and having the other things properly in their proper places made the work clearer rather than heavier.
The elevator opened on seven. She walked back to her desk, sat down, and completed the documentation review she had left unfinished before the meeting. It took forty minutes. The results were clean.
Oh Dasom returned from the meeting twenty minutes after her, still energized in the way she was after events she had found interesting. She sat down, opened her notebook to the notes she had taken, and began transferring the key points to a separate summary document.
Seo-yeon watched her do this for a moment and thought about the question she had asked about the consumer trial structure — the directness of it, the genuine curiosity behind it, the complete absence of any secondary motive. Oh Dasom had asked because she wanted to understand the methodology. That was all it had been.
This was, she noted, its own kind of information. The thing she had been prepared to manage had not required management. The room had held what it was supposed to hold and nothing it was not.
She finished the documentation. Filed it. Started the next item.
---
She was on the train home at six thirty when the message arrived.
*How did it go?*
She looked at this for a moment. Four words, no elaboration. He was asking about her experience of it — not about the logistics or the outcome, which he already knew, but about how it had been for her to be in the room.
She typed: *Well. Oh Dasom asked about the consumer trial structure.*
The reply came back quickly. *I know. I had a prepared answer.*
Of course he had.
*Your answer was good,* she typed.
A pause. Then: *I have good material to work from.*
She looked at this. Outside the train window, the city moved through its evening mode — the stations arriving and departing, the accumulated amber of streetlights, the ordinary continuous motion of Seoul on a Wednesday night.
She thought about the phrase in the presentation — *sensory authenticity*, the idea that knowing what something was supposed to be came from long familiarity rather than technical assessment. She had written that into a report in October. He had read it enough times that it had become part of how he thought about the problem.
This was, she thought, a reasonable description of several things.
She typed: *Saturday is four days away.*
He replied: *I'm aware. The preparation started this evening.*
She put the phone in her pocket and looked out the window at the moving city and thought about a kitchen in Hannam-dong and a notebook with handwriting she had been allowed to touch and a second recipe that had not yet been gotten right, and about the specific quality of having four days to wait for something rather than waiting without knowing when.
The train moved through the November dark.
Four days.
She thought about the specific quality of waiting for something when the waiting had a known endpoint — the difference between that and the kind of waiting she had done for the first several months of this situation, where the endpoint had been unclear and the waiting had the texture of indefinite suspension.
Saturday had a specific time attached to it. She would arrive at the Hannam-dong apartment and the preparation would have been started the previous evening, and there would be a second notebook page with a recipe that had not yet been gotten right, and they would work through it together in the kitchen that was his daily life and that she was learning her way around.
She thought about what *sensory authenticity* meant outside of a product development context. The principle was: knowing what something was supposed to be came from long familiarity with it, from proximity and attention accumulated over time. You could not shortcut this. You could not assess your way to it from the outside. You had to be present for enough of it that the standard became internal rather than external.
She had been, she was discovering, in the process of developing exactly this kind of knowledge about several things simultaneously. The formula, which was complete. The person, who was not.
The train arrived at her station. She got off and walked home through the December cold — it had been cold long enough now that she had stopped thinking of it as the arrival of winter and had simply accepted it as the current condition of the world.
She let herself into the apartment. Put her bag down. Looked at the shelf.
The bottle. The beach stone. The annotated textbook.
Four days.
She went to make tea.
While it steeped, she stood at the kitchen counter and thought about the word *authenticity* — the principle that the real standard for a thing came from long proximity to it, from familiarity that was not performed but accumulated.
She had been accumulating something for several months now. The accumulation was ongoing. The standard it was building toward was not yet fully defined, but it was becoming clearer with each Saturday, each notebook page, each evening that ended with the elevator closing and the city outside and the train home and the bottle on the shelf.
Four days.
She poured the tea and went to sit with it.
