She was not thinking about the recipe on the train.
This was new. For every previous Saturday since the winter section began, she had spent some part of the journey thinking about what was in the notebook — the specific recipe, the annotations she remembered, the stages they had navigated the previous weeks and what the current one might require. The recipe had been the organizing principle of the journey, the thing that gave direction to the hour on the train.
Today she was thinking about him.
Not about the notebook, not about the spring section's final page, not about what the last recipe would require. About him — the specific person in the Hannam-dong apartment who had been, across the past several months, the actual organizing principle of the Saturdays, which the recipes had been the frame for rather than the content of.
She had been learning things all winter and spring. She had learned the grammar of his kitchen and the logic of his mother's annotations and the difference between a technical rest and a rest that was designed to make space for something else. She had learned, more slowly and more importantly, the specific qualities of the person she had been learning these things alongside.
The train arrived at the station. She walked the familiar route to the Hannam-dong building — familiar now in the way that routes became familiar when you had walked them enough times that the body knew them without the mind needing to track.
She had walked this route every week since January. She knew the corner where the convenience store was, the point where the street narrowed, the building entrance with its particular buzzer. She knew the walk the way she knew the kitchen: not through memorization but through repetition that had settled into the hands and feet.
It was the last Saturday of the spring section. The last recipe. After this, there would be no more pages.
She had been thinking about this across the week — not with anxiety, with a specific quality of attention she brought to things that were about to change. The Saturdays had been organized around the notebook since January. Without the notebook, the Saturdays would need to be organized around something else. She already knew what that was.
She was looking forward to it in the way she looked forward to things that mattered rather than things she was managing toward.
---
He opened the door and looked at her.
Not at the kitchen behind her, not with the assessing quality of someone checking whether the thing they had been preparing was ready for the next stage. Simply at her. The direct look, without management, the one that had been there for months now and that she had stopped routing around and simply received.
"The last one," she said.
"Yes," he said. "Come in."
The kitchen had the specific quality of a Saturday afternoon in late March — the light different again from the previous week, the season having advanced another increment in the way it had been advancing incrementally since the beginning of the month. Outside the window, the persimmon tree at the Seongbuk-dong house would be doing something different too. Everything was in the process of becoming its spring version.
The notebook was on the shelf. Open to the last page.
She looked at it from the doorway — the open shelf, the familiar worn cover, the visible handwriting of the page he had turned to before she arrived. He had opened it to the last page for her to find when she came in. This was characteristic of him: the small preparation that made someone else's arrival easier, the thing done in advance that required no acknowledgment.
She went to it before she took off her coat.
---
The annotation was brief.
Briefer than any other page in the notebook — briefer even than the sixth winter recipe with its two-sentence note about the body being ready to stop being cold. This was one short paragraph, in the broad relaxed handwriting of the spring section, and it read:
*This is the last one. Cook it the way you've learned to cook everything else in this book: for the person, not the dish. By now you know who that is.*
*If you are reading this with someone, let them read it too. This is not a recipe I wrote for you alone.*
Seo-yeon read it. She read it again.
She had been reading the notebook for months — had read each annotation with attention, had found things in the margins that he had not yet found, had understood the notes about timing and intention and the difference between what the recipe said and what it meant. She had approached the notebook as a reader rather than a cook, which had been useful, which had been how she contributed to the Saturdays.
This annotation was different. This one was addressed to her as much as to him. *If you are reading this with someone, let them read it too.* She was reading it with someone. She was the someone.
She looked up at Do-yoon.
"She knew," she said.
"Not about you specifically," he said. He had clearly thought about this — his voice had the quality it had when he was saying something he had arrived at carefully. "She knew there would be a person. She understood that by the time I reached the spring section, I would not be reading it alone. She wrote for that situation without knowing who the situation would contain."
Seo-yeon looked at the annotation again. *This is not a recipe I wrote for you alone.* His mother had written this years ago, before she knew him as the adult he had become, without knowing his name or what she would like or whether she would be able to read the spaces. She had written it for whoever this would be.
It was an extraordinary thing to leave for someone.
She thought about what it required — to write an annotation that addressed an unknown future reader, to trust that the person you loved would eventually bring someone to this notebook who could receive what it was trying to give. His mother had trusted him with something that extended beyond his own learning. She had trusted him with the possibility of someone else.
"She trusted you," Seo-yeon said. "Not just to learn the recipes. To bring someone worth writing for."
He was quiet for a moment — the specific quality of quiet that was not the absence of something but the presence of something being received.
"Yes," he said. "I think that's right."
She looked at the annotation one more time. *By now you know who that is.* She thought about all the ways she had come to know — through the winter recipes and the waiting and the hour of reset time and the conversation at the table and the walk along the Hangang and the bakery and the gesture in the kitchen last week. Not through declaration. Through accumulation.
She knew who it was. He knew too.
---
The last recipe was a soup.
Simple — the simplest recipe in the spring section, which was itself simpler than anything in the winter. The ingredients were few and the steps were clear and the annotation had almost nothing technical in it. His mother had not needed to write technical notes for this one. It was the kind of recipe that existed at the end of something, when the person cooking had learned enough that the basics no longer required instruction.
They made it in the way they had made the third spring recipe — together from the beginning, both of them in the kitchen, the positions they had found over many Saturdays occupied without discussion. She took the cutting board. He took the stove. When things needed to synchronize, they synchronized without being told to.
She was aware, making the last recipe, of all the previous ones in her hands — the muscle memory of a winter and a spring of cooking in this kitchen, which had accumulated without her noticing it accumulating. She knew how he moved in this space. She knew which side he preferred, how close to the counter he stood, the particular quality of his attention when a stage was critical versus when it was simply proceeding.
She knew these things the way she knew the annotation about the ginger: not because she had been told, but because she had been paying attention for long enough that the knowledge had arrived without being sought.
The soup came together in thirty minutes. When it was ready, they both knew it at the same moment — not because either of them said so, but because the thing was simply done and the knowing arrived simultaneously.
"That's it," she said.
"Yes," he said. "That's it."
She looked at the pot. Then at the notebook on the counter, still open to the last page, the brief annotation visible from where she stood. *Cook it the way you've learned to cook everything else in this book: for the person, not the dish.*
She thought about the first recipe she had watched him make — the November evening in this kitchen, the first Saturday, the notebook she had not yet been allowed to touch until she was invited. She had been learning then. She had been learning all the way through to now.
What she had learned was not only the recipes. It was also what the recipes were for. His mother had understood something that she was still understanding: that cooking for someone was a specific form of attention, and attention given consistently over time was not just care but a declaration — made not in words but in the accumulated record of being present.
---
He closed the notebook.
The gesture was deliberate — the specific quality of someone completing something that had taken a long time, closing it with the attention it deserved. She stood beside him and watched him do it, watched his hands on the cover, watched him set it back on the shelf in the place it had occupied since the seventh winter recipe.
"Done," she said.
"Done," he said. Then: "Not everything. Just the notebook."
She looked at him. He was looking at the notebook on the shelf, and then at her, with the look that was simply present.
Not everything. Just the notebook.
She stood with that sentence for a moment. He had said it with the specific quality he had when he said things he had considered — not casually, not as a throwaway distinction, but as the accurate statement of what was true. The notebook was done. The other thing was not done.
She thought about what was not done. The relationship that had grown inside the frame of the Saturdays and the recipes, which had now outgrown the frame and existed on its own terms. The things they had learned about each other that were not in any annotation. The four winter recipes and the spring recipes and the conversations in between and the walk along the Hangang and the bakery and the kitchen in Mapo-gu and the dinner in Seongbuk-dong and the notebook brought to her mother and the day her mother had come home and the seven minutes in the HR corridor and the town hall and the consumer trial and everything before that, all the way back to a blind date that had been the wrong blind date and had turned out to be exactly right.
None of that was in the notebook. All of it was not done.
"No," she said. "Not everything."
---
The soup was right.
She ate it at the kitchen table across from him, in the apartment that had become over the course of a winter and a spring a space she moved through without needing to orient herself, with the light doing what the late March light did in the Hannam-dong apartment and the notebook on the shelf and the city outside doing what the city did.
She thought about all the meals. The bun bo at her mother's table in December, the persimmon preparation at Seongbuk-dong, the braised dish in January that had required an hour's reset, the seventh winter recipe and what his mother had written about wanting someone to feel held. The meals that had been the frame for everything else.
"Thank you," she said. "For all of the Saturdays."
He looked at her across the table. "Thank you for coming," he said. "Every time."
She held the weight of that — *every time*, said the way he said things that were exactly what they meant.
She had come every time. She had not missed one. The Saturdays had been reliable in both directions — he had prepared, she had arrived, and the thing had happened that happened when two people showed up consistently for the same thing over a long time.
She thought about what *every time* meant as a statement. It was not a dramatic declaration. It was a record. She had come every time, which meant she had wanted to come every time, which meant the wanting had been there throughout — before the annotation about prediction, before the recipe written for two, before the ginger arriving late and the mugwort in twenty years of broth and the tasting and the reset hour and all the other things that had been finding her while she wasn't looking directly at them.
The wanting had been there. She had just needed time to find it.
They finished the soup. The bowls remained on the table. Neither of them moved to clear them.
---
"Next Saturday," he said.
She looked at him.
"Would you want to come," he said, "without a reason?"
The question was simple. It was also not simple. He was asking whether she wanted to continue the Saturday rhythm without the structure that had contained it — without the notebook, without the recipe, without the organizing principle that had made the Saturdays what they had been. He was asking whether she wanted the Saturday itself, with no frame around it except that she was here and he was here.
She thought about the annotation. *Spring wants to be found, not pursued.* She had been finding things all spring — finding them rather than deciding them into existence, arriving at them rather than managing them toward her. The question he was asking was one of those things.
She thought about the first Saturday — the November evening when she had stood in this kitchen for the first time and watched him cook the first recipe and had understood that she was in a place that had been cared for in a specific way. She had not known then what she was at the beginning of. She knew now.
She thought about every Saturday between that one and this one. The winter in its density and the spring in its lightness and all the in-between things — the conversations at the table, the hours of waiting, the ginger arriving late, the moment last week when she had leaned toward him in the kitchen and it had been the most natural thing she had done in a long time.
She had found her way to this answer across all of it. She was here now, at the end of the last recipe, and the answer was not a difficult one.
"Yes," she said. "I want to come."
He nodded once — not the processing nod, the receiving nod. The one that meant something had arrived where it was supposed to arrive.
"Then next Saturday," he said.
She picked up her bag. He walked her to the door. The elevator arrived.
She stepped in and turned to look at him.
At the doorway of the apartment that had been the site of seven winter recipes and four spring ones, the apartment where a notebook had been learned page by page across many Saturdays and placed back on the shelf with all its annotations intact. The apartment where she had first stood in November not knowing what she was at the beginning of. The apartment that had become, across the winter and the spring, simply where she went on Saturdays.
He stood in the doorway looking back at her. The same look he had had from the beginning — the one that was simply there, without management, without the careful quality of someone presenting a particular version of themselves. Just him, in the doorway, at the end of the last recipe.
"Until next Saturday," she said.
"Until next Saturday," he said.
The elevator closed. The train back was the same route it had always been. Seoul outside the window was doing what it did.
She held the celadon bottle in her bag and thought about the annotation on the last page: *by now you know who that is.* His mother had written it for him. She had read it and found that she also knew. Not the specific words for it — not yet, not all of them. But the shape of it, the specific weight of it, the way it had arrived not through decision but through finding.
Spring had done the work.
Next Saturday, there would be no recipe. No annotation to find, no stage to complete, no ginger to add at the end because the instruction said to. Just a Saturday, and him, and the apartment that had become the place she went.
She thought about what it meant to look forward to something that had no structure yet. The Saturdays had always had structure. The new ones would need to find their own.
She was not worried about this. The spring had taught her: the structure finds itself when you stop pursuing it.
She found, on the train home in the last March evening of the spring section, that she was looking forward to it.
