Three weeks in, and Mila had stopped thinking about the building as a place she was navigating.
It had become, in the way that places became when you spent enough consecutive hours in them, simply where she was. The east elevator. The machine on thirty-six that produced coffee worth drinking. The specific quality of light in Studio 3 in the late afternoon when it came through the high windows at an angle that turned the floor warm. Petra's particular silence before she gave feedback that was going to require more than one session to implement. Kim's way of nodding when he heard something he would think about later.
She was, she realized on Wednesday morning while running scales in booth four, no longer working to belong here. She was simply here.
That was new. She held it for a moment, the way you held a note to check whether it was true, and found that it was.
Naomi appeared at the booth window — not knocking, just appearing, which was her particular mode of requesting attention. Mila pulled out one earbud.
"The bridge section in the arrangement I'm working on," Naomi said. "The harmonic shift at bar twelve isn't landing. Can you listen to it?"
It was not, technically, a question. But from Naomi, Mila had come to understand, the not-technically-a-question was the warmest form of request available.
"After this set," Mila said.
Naomi nodded and walked away, which was her version of *thank you*.
Mila put her earbud back in and finished the set and thought, briefly, about how three weeks ago Naomi had looked at her like a question she wasn't sure she wanted answered. Progress took forms you didn't always anticipate.
Elliot found her at eleven-thirty.
"Tonight," he said, "there's a cocktail reception. Label Four's hosting — it's an industry mixer, about forty people, partners and developing talent from several companies. Mr. Vance will be attending. You've been added to the guest list as a Vance Entertainment representative."
Mila looked at him. "Me specifically."
"You specifically."
"Why?"
Elliot considered the question with the expression of someone who knew exactly why and was deciding how much of that to share. "You're three weeks in with strong assessment results. Part of the value of this program is visibility within the industry ecosystem. This is the first appropriate occasion to begin that process."
"That's the official answer," Mila said.
"It's also the accurate one," Elliot said, without inflection. "The car leaves at seven-thirty. Business casual is fine."
He walked away. She looked at the booth window where Naomi had been standing and thought about the difference between being introduced to an industry and being presented to one, and which of those was happening tonight.
---
She had thought, when she first signed the contract, about what entry into this world would actually look like. She had imagined it in stages — training, then a showcase, then maybe a support slot somewhere, then the slow accumulation of a name that meant something to people who made decisions. She had not imagined being added to a guest list three weeks in.
She turned this over while Elliot was still speaking, looking for the catch, because in her experience things that arrived faster than expected usually had a cost attached that revealed itself later. She did not find a catch. What she found instead was the more complicated recognition that Adrian Vance operated on a different timeline than the one she had assumed, and that being in his orbit meant things moved at his pace, not the industry's average.
She was not sure, yet, whether that was something to be grateful for or careful about.
Probably both.
She changed in the building.
There was a small room off the thirty-fifth floor bathroom that had a full-length mirror and a chair and a hook on the wall, the kind of space that existed in every building that employed people who sometimes needed to be somewhere other than where they worked without going home first. She had used it once before, after a late session when Zoe had insisted on dinner and she hadn't had time to travel across the city.
She hung her bag on the hook and looked at what she'd brought: a dark green dress she had owned for two years and worn to three significant occasions, the small silver star earrings, low heels she could walk in properly. Nothing borrowed, nothing new, nothing selected to impress anyone specific.
She put it on and looked in the mirror.
Three weeks ago she had stood in a different building in a uniform someone else had chosen and looked in a different mirror and thought: *one night, research, information, use it.* She had been right about one night. She had been wrong about what kind of night it would be.
She touched the earrings — her mother's earrings, the tiny silver stars — and looked at herself for a moment longer.
She did her own hair. She did her own makeup — the small, practiced version she had developed for auditions and conservatory performances, the version that said *I have considered how I present myself* without saying *I am trying to impress you*, because the difference between those two things was one she had always understood and considered important.
She thought about Naomi, who would know exactly what to wear to this kind of event and would wear it with the complete confidence of someone who had decided, at some early point, that she belonged in these rooms and had not revisited the decision since. She thought about the trainee tenor she had not yet met, probably doing the same thing in a different building, for the same occasion, with the same specific mixture of preparation and uncertainty.
She thought about being twenty-one and wanting something specific and finding herself, against all reasonable expectation, three weeks away from having asked for it.
She was not going to squander that by being nervous about a cocktail party.
She looked at herself one more time. Straightened the earrings. Picked up her bag.
Then she picked up her bag and went to find the elevator.
---
The elevator arrived at the lobby at seven twenty-eight.
Adrian was already there — jacket on, the version of him that existed in public contexts, contained and exact and aware of the space he occupied. He looked up when the doors opened. She stepped out. There was a moment — brief, specific, the length of something being registered without comment — in which he looked at her.
Not the assessing look. Not the professional one. Something else, present and unhurried, that moved across her face and then settled.
"Ready?" he said.
"Yes," she said.
She had been looked at a great many times in her life — by professors, by coaches, by the juries who decided whether her training was progressing adequately, by the people in rooms she had moved through as serving staff who had not looked at her at all. She had a finely calibrated sense for the different registers of being seen.
What Adrian did in that half-second in the lobby was not any of the registers she had a name for.
It was not assessment. It was not the professional attention he directed at things he was evaluating for quality. It was not the almost-proprietary look she had seen from him before, the one that had made her say *I am not yours* in an elevator. It was something without a category, something that asked nothing of her and offered nothing specific in return, that simply registered her presence as if her presence were a significant fact.
She had not known how to receive that, so she had answered his question and walked to the car and let the evening do what evenings did.
They walked to the car. Elliot was already outside. The city did its evening thing around them — cooling, golden, the particular quality of Aurora City at the edge of night.
---
The reception was at a venue she knew by name but had never been inside: a converted warehouse space in the arts district that Label Four used for events, all exposed brick and warm lighting and the specific ambient sound of forty people who worked in the same industry pretending to be relaxed about it.
She moved through the room the way she had learned, at The Solenne, to move through rooms — with purpose, reading as she went. But the reading was different now. At The Solenne she had been cataloguing power structures from the outside, the map-making of someone who did not belong to the territory. Tonight she was inside the territory. The people she spoke to spoke back with the registered interest of people who assumed she had a reason to be there.
She met a developer from Label Four who wanted to know about her vocal range. She met a sync licensing executive who asked about original material. She met two other developing artists from different companies — a tenor from a classical crossover program who was funny and self-aware about it, and a producer-turned-artist who asked her three sharp questions about her compositional process and seemed genuinely interested in the answers.
She was in conversation with the producer-turned-artist when she became aware, peripherally, of Adrian across the room.
He was talking to someone — an older man she recognized as a senior figure at one of the distribution companies. He was not looking in her direction. But she was aware of where he was in the room the way she was aware, in performance, of where the focal point of the stage was — not by looking at it directly, but by its relationship to everything else.
She had learned something at The Solenne that she had not had the language for at the time but was beginning to articulate now: the difference between listening to respond and listening to understand. Most conversations in industry rooms were the first kind — people waiting for the gap in the other person's sentence where their own point could be inserted. She had been doing the second kind for three weeks, in sessions with Kim and Petra and the coaches, and it had changed the way she heard what people told her.
The sync licensing executive — a woman named Dana who had been in the industry for fifteen years and had the specific efficiency of someone who had stopped performing patience for people whose work didn't warrant it — had asked her three questions in five minutes and spent the rest of the conversation listening to the answers. At the end she had said: "Send me something when you have it. Not a pitch — just the music."
Mila had said she would, and had meant it, and had moved on with the particular lightness of someone who had received real information rather than a polite placeholder.
She finished her conversation and moved on.
---
He had been watching her work the room for twenty minutes before Stellan Bryce asked him the question.
Stellan was sixty-two and had been in distribution for thirty years and had the specific quality of someone who had seen every configuration of this industry and had developed, over decades, an accurate read on things that were not being said out loud.
"She's good," Stellan said, with his eyes on the other side of the room. "The Conservatory girl. The way she listens — most people in these rooms are waiting to talk. She's actually listening."
"She is," Adrian said.
"How long has she been with you?"
"Three weeks."
Stellan made a sound that expressed a calibrated form of surprise. "Three weeks." He looked at Adrian with the measuring attention of someone who had just received information that altered their read of a situation. "Who is she to you?"
"One of my artists," Adrian said.
It was the correct answer. It was also, he understood in the half-second after he said it, the answer that fit neatly into a category and left everything outside the category unaddressed. Stellan Bryce had been reading rooms for thirty years. The answer had not satisfied him, which suggested the answer was insufficient, which suggested the category was insufficient, which was not something Adrian was prepared to examine in the middle of a reception.
He knew Stellan's read was accurate. Stellan's reads were always accurate — it was the reason Adrian had maintained a relationship with him for twelve years despite the fact that Stellan had a habit of saying true things in rooms where true things were inconvenient.
"Three weeks," Stellan said again, as if the number explained something. "She moves like she's been in these rooms before."
"She has," Adrian said. "Under different circumstances."
Stellan looked at him with the expression of a man who had just received more information than he had expected and was deciding what to do with it. "Different circumstances," he repeated. "I see."
He did not, Adrian thought, see exactly. But he saw enough.
He moved the conversation to distribution margins and left the question where it was.
---
She found out about the photograph the next morning.
She had known, in some abstract way, that being associated with Adrian Vance's company would attach a certain kind of attention to her name. She had factored this in as a cost of the contract — the scrutiny that came with visibility, the way people in this industry were always looking for the story behind the story.
She had not factored in what it would feel like to see herself in a photograph with him and understand, from the outside, that they had a visual language together — a shared orientation, a quality of attention that was legible even in a candid, even in a photograph neither of them had posed for.
She looked at the photograph for longer than she needed to.
He was not looking at her in it. She was not looking at him. They were both looking at the sync executive. And yet.
Zoe sent it — a screenshot from the industry blogger's feed, a candid taken sometime during the reception: Mila and Adrian standing beside a third person she recognized as the sync licensing executive, all three in conversation. The photograph was unremarkable in itself. The caption was *Vance Entertainment's newest face — watch this space.* Eleven comments. Most were professional. Two were not.
*she's either very talented or very lucky to be in that room*
*or very close to the right person :)*
Mila read the comments once. Closed the app. Opened it again. Read them again as if the second reading would change what they said.
It did not.
**ZOE:** how are you feeling about this **MILA:** it's two comments **ZOE:** i know. but how are you feeling
She looked at the photograph. She was looking at the sync executive. Adrian was also nominally looking at the sync executive. But there was something in the angle of his attention — something in the way his body was oriented in the frame — that a person who was looking for it might read as oriented toward her.
**ZOE:** mila. **MILA:** i don't know **ZOE:** the photograph or the feeling **MILA:** either. both.
There was a pause. Then:
**ZOE:** that's the most honest thing you've said to me in three weeks
Mila put the phone face-down on her desk and looked at the water stain on the ceiling above her bed.
Gerald offered no opinion on the matter.
She did not sleep well and arrived at the building the next morning with the particular flatness of someone who had processed something in the night without arriving at a conclusion, only at a clearer picture of what was there to be processed.
---
The session with Petra ran late.
When it finished she was alone on the training floor — the others had cleared out, the lights in most of the booths were off, the building had its late-afternoon quietness. She went to booth four to run the new material one more time before she left.
She was three minutes in when she saw him.
Not through the performance room glass this time — through the booth window that faced the main corridor. Adrian was walking through the floor at the particular pace of someone moving between two places with something specific on their mind. He did not look toward the booths. He was not looking for her.
Then, at the exact moment he drew level with booth four, he slowed.
One beat. Two. He did not turn his head. He did not stop walking entirely. Just a fractional reduction in pace, a slight alteration in the forward momentum of a man who always moved with forward momentum — as if something had reached him through the glass and glass did not stop it.
Then he continued. The corridor was empty.
Mila looked at herself in the mirror at the far end of the booth.
There was a smile on her face.
She had not put it there. It had arrived without her permission, small and involuntary and entirely real, in the way of things that could no longer be managed from the inside.
She turned back to the microphone.
She sang the next line. And the one after that.
There was a thing she had written in the notebook, once, about the difference between wanting something and being willing to want it. The first was involuntary — you could not always choose what you wanted. The second was the decision: whether to let the wanting be real, whether to stop managing it back into the category of *things I notice but do not act on.*
She had been managing a great many things back into that category for three weeks.
The smile in the mirror did not feel like a thing she was managing.
She was not sure, yet, what she was going to do about that. She suspected she was going to have to decide soon, because the things you did not decide eventually decided themselves, and she preferred, in all matters, to be the one who chose.
And did not try to put the smile away.
