The fourth week had a different texture from the third.
Not worse — just different, the way weather changed without anything visible shifting, a pressure differential that you felt in your joints before you saw it in the sky. Training was the same. The sessions were good. Kim had started giving her more complex problems, which meant he thought she could handle them, which was its own form of information. Petra had identified a second tension pattern in her lower register and was systematically taking it apart.
The work was good. The work was, in fact, the best sustained stretch of musical development she had experienced since the conservatory's intensive summer program three years ago.
And yet.
Dana Yoon had not replied to the email Mila had sent Sunday evening — the one with the two demos attached, the clean versions she had finished with Kim's guidance, sent with the subject line *from the reception, as discussed.* Not a pitch. Just the music, as Dana had asked for. By Wednesday she had moved it to the back of her attention, which was where she put things she couldn't do anything more about. By Thursday the festival audition had sent its automated closure notice two weeks ahead of the posted deadline.
She noted both things. Did not connect them. Did not connect them again on Friday when a student radio inquiry she had been expecting a response to went unanswered past the response window.
On Saturday morning she connected them.
---
She had been in enough uncertain situations to have developed a reliable internal signal for when something was wrong versus when she was simply anxious about something being wrong. The signal was not loud. It was more like a sustained low note — present in the background, not interrupting, but consistently audible if you were paying the right kind of attention.
She had been paying it for four days before she could articulate what she was hearing.
The festival audition had been a long shot — she knew that going in, had submitted more in the spirit of practice than expectation. That one closing early could be administrative. Dana Yoon not replying in five days could be the volume of her inbox. The student radio non-response could be turnover in their volunteer staff.
Each one, alone, was nothing.
The sustained low note disagreed.
Zoe called at ten-fourteen, which meant she had already been up for hours, which meant she had found something and had been deciding whether to say it.
"I'm going to tell you something," Zoe said, "and I need you to hear the whole thing before you say anything."
"Tell me."
Zoe told her.
It had started, apparently, on a private industry forum — the kind that required credentials to access, the kind that Zoe had access to through a contact at a booking agency who owed her a favor. A thread, started nine days ago, under the category of *industry notes and observations.* Anonymous, as these things always were. The opening post had been brief: a mention of a *recent addition to a major label's development program* who had *made quite an entrance at a recent industry event.* The kind of language that said nothing specific and implied everything.
The replies had done the work the original post hadn't. Someone asking whether the *entrance* in question had been the champagne incident at Vance's gala. Someone else confirming, with the authority of someone who had been there, that yes, there had been *an incident.* A third voice asking, mildly, whether it was standard practice for Vance to sign people who started their industry career by making scenes at his events.
No names. No accusations. Just the careful architecture of implication — each piece individually deniable, collectively corrosive.
"How many people have seen it?" Mila asked, when Zoe finished.
"The forum has about three hundred active members. Industry-facing. Booking agents, A&R, venue managers, small label staff." Zoe paused. "The people who make the first-layer decisions. Not the big names — the people the big names delegate to."
Mila had learned, over years of managing difficult information, to receive it first and react second. The receiving was a physical thing — a deliberate settling, a decision to let the information arrive fully before the body started producing responses to it.
She heard the whole thing. Let the silence run for a moment after Zoe finished.
"The champagne incident," she said. "That's what they're using."
"As the entry point, yes. The narrative is the version of the story where the incident is evidence of instability rather than self-defense. The version where you're the problem rather than the response to the problem."
"And without context, someone who wasn't there reads it that way."
"Without context, someone who wasn't there reads it exactly that way."
"Okay," she said.
"Okay as in you're processing or okay as in you have a plan?"
"Okay as in I need to understand the terrain before I decide anything."
"That's very measured of you," Zoe said. "I have been sitting on this for two hours and I am still not calm, for the record."
"Thank you for being calm anyway."
"I love you," Zoe said. "Go figure out the terrain."
Mila sat with that. Three hundred people. The layer of the industry that decided who got the audition, who got the email returned, who got the booking before the roster was full. Not powerful enough to destroy a career — but positioned perfectly to make the early stages of building one significantly harder.
"Victor Lang," she said.
"I can't prove it," Zoe said.
"I know."
"You know it's him."
"I know it's him," Mila confirmed. "The question is what to do about it."
---
She found Naomi in the movement studio after lunch, running through choreography alone with the particular focused energy of someone who was working out something that had nothing to do with the steps.
Naomi had been in this industry — in this specific company, in this specific program — for eight months. She had arrived knowing things Mila was still learning, and she had continued to accumulate knowledge at the particular pace of someone for whom understanding the terrain was not a survival strategy but a professional commitment.
Mila had watched her over four weeks and formed a considered opinion: Naomi Chase was one of the most practically intelligent people she had encountered in a professional context. Not brilliant — brilliant was a different category, the category of flashes and intuitions. Naomi was something steadier and in many ways more useful: she was accurate. She watched things carefully and she was accurate about them.
She was also, Mila had come to understand, not the person she had seemed to be in the first days. The wariness had been professional caution, the assessment had been fair-minded, and what it had arrived at — slowly, visibly, over four weeks of proximity — was something that looked increasingly like respect.
Mila respected it back. She had not said so. Neither had Naomi. It existed anyway, the way some things existed between people who had looked at each other honestly and decided the looking was worth continuing.
Mila waited in the doorway until Naomi looked up.
"Question," Mila said.
Naomi lowered the music. "Shoot."
"If someone in the industry wanted to quietly damage a new artist's reputation before they'd had a chance to establish one — what would it look like?"
Naomi looked at her for a long moment. Not surprised — more like the expression of someone who had been waiting for this conversation and had already prepared for it.
"Like nothing, on the surface," Naomi said. "That's the point. No one says anything directly. You just start noticing that things don't come through. Emails that should be answered aren't. Auditions that should have been live close early. People at events are a degree cooler than they should be given your actual track record." She paused. "You don't notice any single thing. You notice the pattern, and by the time you notice the pattern, three months have passed and the damage is already there."
"How do you fight it?"
Naomi was quiet for a moment. She had the expression she wore when she was deciding how honest to be — the specific calculation of someone who had learned that honesty was a resource to be deployed strategically.
"You can't fight it directly," she said. "You can't respond to something that hasn't been said out loud. What you can do is make the narrative irrelevant — be so visible, so clearly good, that the whispers don't have anywhere to land. The thing about reputation damage is it only works in a vacuum. Fill the vacuum with something real and there's nothing for it to feed on."
She looked at Mila directly.
"Who is it?" she said.
"I'd rather not say until I'm certain."
Naomi nodded once, accepting this. "If it's who I think it might be," she said, "you're going to need more than your own effort to counter it. You're going to need someone with enough standing to make a statement just by associating their name with yours publicly."
She held Mila's gaze. They both understood what she was not saying.
"Thank you," Mila said.
"Don't thank me," Naomi said. "Just do something worth watching."
---
The four artists who had preceded her had different stories with the same underlying structure.
The first had been a songwriter-producer who had publicly declined to work with Victor after a deal went sideways. The campaign against him had been thorough and had taken fourteen months to build enough friction that his label had quietly declined to renew his development contract. He was now working in commercial music under a different name, which was not a bad life but was not the one he had been building.
The second had been a vocalist whose crime, as far as Mila could reconstruct, had been signing with a label that Victor had been pursuing — not doing anything to him, just existing in a space he had wanted. Her campaign had been shorter and cruder: a single concentrated push that had targeted her social media presence and a touring opportunity simultaneously. She had left Aurora City within a year.
The third and fourth had been variations on the same theme. In each case the mechanism was the same: not destruction, just friction. Enough friction, applied at the right points, at the right time, to make the cost of supporting the target higher than the benefit. People in the industry did not, as a rule, go to war for developing artists. They simply redirected their attention somewhere easier.
Victor Lang was not a monster. He was a machine that had learned the precise amount of pressure required to produce a specific outcome and applied it consistently.
Mila sat with that for a while.
Then she closed the browser and went to find Adrian.
She did not go to Adrian.
Not immediately. She went to Studio 3 instead, because she needed to think before she talked, and thinking happened better when her hands were doing something, and the something her hands knew how to do was play.
She ran the information Naomi had given her against what she knew. Victor Lang. Four artists. Eight months, a year, eighteen months — that was how long the campaigns had taken, according to what she had read. Not because the damage had been slow. Because the artists hadn't understood what was happening until the accumulation was too heavy to reverse.
She was one month in. The pattern was already visible to her. That was an advantage she had not had on her own — she had had Zoe, who knew how to look, and Naomi, who knew what she was seeing. She had the pattern before the damage was significant.
She sat at the piano in the corner of the studio — the upright that was technically for accompaniment reference but that she had started using for thinking, the way she used the floor in her room at home — and played through the opening of the bridge she had finished last week. The one with the right word now.
She was halfway through it when the door opened.
---
He had not knocked. He did not, she had noticed, knock on Studio 3, which she was coming to think of as its own category of information.
He came in and sat in the chair by the door — not the floor this time, the chair, the one near the wall, which meant this was a different kind of visit from the Friday night visit. This was work.
"You know," she said. Not a question.
"I've known for three days."
She stopped playing. Turned on the bench to face him. "You waited three days to tell me."
"I was mapping the scope," he said. "The thread, the distribution, which accounts had amplified it, whether there was a coordinated second wave coming." A pause. "I wanted to bring you information, not just a problem."
She asked her questions and he answered them without the slight pause she had noticed in their early conversations — the pause of someone deciding how much to share, how to frame it, whether the person asking could handle the full version. He answered as if she were a colleague, which she was, and the absence of the pause was something she noticed and filed.
"The second night of the series," she said. "Who's headlining?"
"Calla Marchetti." He said it without explanation, which meant he assumed she knew the name. She did — an artist three years into a mid-level career, critically respected, with the specific kind of following that consisted of people who worked in music. The industry audience. The audience you wanted if what you were building was a long-term reputation rather than a short-term visibility spike.
"Good match," Mila said. "For the kind of statement you're describing."
"I thought so," he said. "Kim agrees."
"You consulted Kim before you talked to me," she said. Not an accusation — observation.
"I asked a technical question. You're the one who decides."
She held the distinction in her hands for a moment, checking its weight. It held.
She sat with that. It was, she recognized, exactly what she had done this afternoon — she had gone to Naomi to understand the terrain before she went to him. They had, apparently, the same instinct about preparation, which should not have surprised her as much as it did.
"The scope," she said. "What is it?"
He told her: the forum, the specific accounts that had participated, the three external signals he had tracked that suggested the closure of the festival audition was not coincidental. He was precise and thorough and did not soften the picture.
She appreciated that.
"Countering it," she said. "What does that look like?"
"Visibility," he said. "Naomi was right."
Mila looked at him. "You heard that conversation."
"I was on the floor above. The movement studio has significant acoustic transmission issues that facilities has been meaning to address for two years." The corner of his mouth moved. Not quite an apology. "The Vance Autumn Series. It's a three-night showcase at the Meridian Stages — major venue, curated audience, industry press. I want to put you in as an opening act for the second night. Two weeks from Thursday."
"Two weeks," she said.
"You have the material. Kim confirmed it yesterday."
She processed this. "You talked to Kim about this before you talked to me."
He looked at her steadily. "I asked Kim whether you were ready. I asked you whether you want to do it. Those are different questions for different people."
She sat with the distinction. It was, she found, a distinction that held.
"What happens to Victor if this works?" she said.
"He waits for the next opportunity. He always waits." Adrian's voice was level — not resigned, just accurate. "What changes is the cost-benefit for him. Right now you're an easy target — new, unestablished, no public narrative of your own. After the Autumn Series, moving against you has a higher cost. He'll look for someone cheaper."
"He won't stop."
"No. He won't stop. But you can make yourself not worth his time."
Mila nodded slowly. "I have to be strong enough that waiting has no value."
He looked at her with something in his expression that she had started to recognize — not the professional attention, not the assessment, but the look that was specifically hers, the one that arrived when she said something that had landed where he had not expected it to.
"Yes," he said.
The room was quiet for a moment.
"Dana Yoon replied to your email," he said. "I saw it come through the company's partner notification system — she cc'd our A&R for the sync inquiry. I didn't prompt that. I didn't contact her after the reception."
Mila looked at him. "You're telling me you didn't intervene."
"I'm telling you she replied because of your music, not because of me. I thought you should know the difference."
She held his gaze for a moment.
The difference mattered. She had known, going into that reception, that visibility through Adrian's company would always carry the question of provenance — whether the doors were opening for her or for his proximity. Dana Yoon had replied to demos she had sent herself, to a contact she had made herself, on the basis of music she had made herself.
That was something else. That was entirely hers.
"Thank you for telling me," she said.
He nodded. Stood. "Two weeks. Talk to Kim tomorrow about the set."
"I will."
He moved toward the door. She turned back to the piano. Her hands found the opening chord of the bridge again — the one with the right word now, the one that had changed the meaning of everything before it.
"Adrian."
He stopped.
"Thank you," she said. "For bringing me information instead of just the problem."
A pause. Not long — the length of something received and placed somewhere carefully.
"You're welcome," he said.
And left her to the music.
