Several days passed after the northern delegation's audience, and Elsie found herself doing a thing she did not particularly enjoy admitting to: glancing, every time her errands carried her near the great hall's gallery, toward the spot where a column of guards had once obscured a tall, dark figure she still hadn't properly seen. She never stopped walking. She never lingered the way she had that first time, rail gripped too tight, breath held too long. But the glance happened anyway, automatic and unbidden, the way her eyes had once flicked toward Bramblehollow's tavern door whenever someone mentioned a stranger passing through town, simply checking, simply confirming, a habit she'd never asked her body to develop and couldn't seem to talk it out of now that it had.
She did not care for the development. She cared for it even less than she'd cared for the eleven days she'd caught herself counting, mostly because a glance was harder to argue herself out of than a number written in a notebook. A number, at least, could be crossed out. A glance simply happened, again and again, each time slightly more practiced and slightly less deniable than the last, and she had begun, privately, to wonder how many more weeks of this particular habit she could endure before it stopped being something she did and started being something she simply was.
She had, at least, the consolation of routine to anchor her against it. The dispensary's daily rhythm had grown comfortable enough by now that she could move through most of a morning on instinct alone, leaving her mind free to circle its own worries without endangering an actual measurement, and she had been doing exactly that — half-present, half-elsewhere — when Birdie caught up to her at a half-run, breathless with the particular urgency of someone carrying news rather than gossip.
"Have you heard?" Birdie said, falling into step beside her, practically vibrating with it. "They're saying the whole household's about to turn upside down. Some grand purification ceremony, and not just any priestess running it — they're bringing in *the* Seraphine. The Seraphine Aurelle."
Elsie's feet kept moving. The rest of her did not, for one long, suspended moment, do anything at all.
---
*Seraphine Aurelle.*
The name landed in her chest with a specific, physical weight that the past five years of careful avoidance had not prepared her for, despite — or perhaps because of — how thoroughly she'd trained herself never to think it. She had built an entire life around the simple, load-bearing assumption that this name belonged to a different story, happening somewhere else, to someone else, while she occupied a small, careful corner of the world too unremarkable for either of them to ever notice. She had not expected to hear it spoken casually in a corridor, by a friend more excited about gossip than aware of what the gossip actually meant.
What little she remembered of the name came back to her now in disconnected fragments, the same way most of the book's details had survived the years — not a coherent character, but a collection of impressions assembled from a handful of remembered scenes. Golden hair, in every illustration the publisher had bothered to commission. A voice, in the few passages she could still half-recall, that other characters described as warm enough to calm a room simply by entering it. A destiny so thoroughly woven into the plot's structure that Elsie, reading half-asleep in another life, had never once doubted the woman would survive to the final page, however many side characters fell along the way to get her there. She had envied that certainty once, lying in a borrowed bed in a borrowed body, wishing some fraction of it might apply to whatever nameless role she'd been assigned instead.
"You've gone pale," Birdie said, peering at her with sudden concern. "Heat getting to you? We can sit a moment, if—"
"I'm fine," Elsie said, in the flat, automatic voice she used for that particular lie, and made herself keep walking, because stopping now, in the middle of the gallery, with Birdie watching, was precisely the kind of memorable behavior she'd spent five years training herself out of. "Just surprised. That's a significant name to bring to a household this far from the capital's usual circuit."
"That's what I said! Apparently it's not really about us — it's about the seal up north, the one everyone's been on edge about since the dead livestock started. Some kind of grand purification to settle it properly, and apparently Caldreth's wards are strong enough to hold the ceremony safely, which is more than most of the realm can say right now." Birdie said all of this with the breezy, unbothered enthusiasm of someone discussing an interesting piece of news rather than the precise mechanism by which her own private nightmare had just confirmed its address.
Elsie absorbed the information the way she absorbed most dangerous things these days — methodically, despite the roaring in her own ears, sorting fact from speculation with the same disciplined attention she'd have given a poison she needed to identify before it killed someone. *The seal up north.* The same seal whose rumored cracking had emptied Bramblehollow's streets of merchants, the same one Hesketh's household discussed in careful, fearful fragments she'd been quietly cataloguing for weeks. It was not, she understood with a sinking finality, a separate danger arriving alongside the one she'd already been managing. It was the same danger, simply growing large enough now to require the book's actual heroine to address it in person.
---
"What exactly does a purification ceremony do?" Elsie asked, with the careful, mild curiosity of someone making ordinary conversation rather than someone whose entire survival strategy had just been rendered considerably more complicated. "I've never seen one."
"Neither have I, honestly — they're rare enough that most people only know the stories." Birdie warmed to the topic with the easy confidence of someone enjoying her own expertise. "Supposed to be about restoring balance to a damaged ward, something to do with channeling a blessed bloodline's power directly into the seal's structure. Takes someone properly gifted to do it without getting hurt, which I gather is rarer than you'd think, even among priestesses. That's why they're bringing in someone as famous as her instead of relying on whoever's local." She shrugged. "Mostly I just know it'll mean extra guests, extra work, and probably extra nerves from everyone above us in the kitchens for a solid month before it happens."
"Will she be staying long?" Elsie asked, keeping her voice carefully level, the question pitched exactly between idle curiosity and the kind of practical concern any dispensary worker might reasonably have about staffing.
"Weeks, at least, from what I've heard. These things apparently take preparation — purifying yourself before you can purify anything else, or some such. Plenty of fasting and ritual and standing very still in temples, from what the stories say. She'll have her own people with her too, attendants and guards and probably a small army of priests, all needing beds and meals and dispensary stock just like everyone else." Birdie grinned, entirely unbothered by the prospect. "Honestly, it's a bit exciting, isn't it? Most exciting thing to happen here since I started, and I've been at Caldreth three years."
"Very exciting," Elsie agreed, in a voice that she hoped sounded considerably more like genuine enthusiasm and considerably less like a woman doing rapid, silent calculations about how many additional people now stood between her and the simple, comfortable invisibility she'd spent weeks building.
Elsie nodded along, filing each piece away with the particular cold precision she reserved for information that might keep her alive, and felt the shape of the problem clarify itself with each new detail Birdie volunteered. A grand ceremony, requiring weeks of preparation. A famous, recognizable priestess, present at Caldreth for the duration of it, moving through exactly the kind of formal occasions Elsie had spent her entire time here arranging to avoid. A seal whose failing condition she now strongly suspected connected, somehow, to the very corridor she'd been warned never to approach, the very voice she'd overheard counting down a clock only its owner could see.
The story she'd run from for five years was no longer content to wait somewhere else for her to wander into it. It had found a reason to come here instead.
---
She spent the walk back from the kitchens doing the careful, anxious arithmetic she'd once applied to Bramblehollow's market hours, except the variables had multiplied considerably since then, and the stakes attached to getting the calculation wrong had grown to match. She had built Rule Six around a single dangerous person and a single set of corridors. She now needed, apparently, to account for an entire second dangerous person — one whose presence she couldn't predict nearly as well, having never lived in the same household as her, having only the thin, half-remembered shape of a character from a book she'd barely finished reading before her own life had interrupted the story entirely.
*She'll have her own retinue,* Elsie thought, turning the problem over with the same methodical attention she gave any threat assessment. *Her own schedule, her own preferred corridors, attendants of her own who might notice things Theon hasn't bothered to. I don't know her habits the way I've learned his. I have no map for this one at all.*
It occurred to her, walking, that the entire architecture of her survival at Caldreth had been built on the comfortable, narrow assumption that she only needed to avoid one center of gravity in this story — the Lord Regent, dangerous, but singular, predictable enough once studied. She had never seriously planned for the possibility that the book's actual heroine might walk through the same gates, breathe the same air, attend the same formal occasions Elsie had spent weeks learning to step around.
Two centers of gravity, in the same household, at the same time, both capable of upending five years of careful work with nothing more than a single unlucky glance in her direction. She found herself, walking, doing the grim mental exercise of trying to picture what that single unlucky glance might actually cost her — recognition, certainly, if the priestess possessed even a fraction of the sensing ability the book had once attributed to her; questions, at the very least, about a dispensary girl whose presence registered as something other than ordinary on whatever instruments or instincts a true priestess carried with her. She did not know enough about Seraphine's actual abilities to calculate the risk with any precision, and the not-knowing bothered her almost as much as the risk itself.
She thought, too, of the dispensary's surveyor's needle, weeks ago now, trembling against its glass face in a way the man holding it hadn't quite been able to explain. A trained instrument had noticed something in her that an ordinary observer wouldn't have. She had no reason to assume a priestess capable of channeling a sealed bloodline's power into a damaged ward would prove any less perceptive than a brass needle on a string.
There was, she supposed, one small mercy buried in the situation, though it took her some effort to locate it: a household of this size hosting an event of this magnitude would be considerably more chaotic than orderly, full of strangers and shifting schedules and a hundred small disruptions to the careful routines she'd learned to predict. Chaos, properly managed, had its own particular kind of cover. A dispensary girl lost in the general scramble of expanded staffing might, with sufficient luck and sufficient care, prove harder to single out than she would in the household's ordinary, predictable quiet. It was a thin comfort, and she did not entirely trust it, but it was the only one available to her, and she had learned, across five years, to make do with thin comfort when nothing sturdier presented itself.
---
That night, by candlelight, she opened the notebook and stared at the accumulated rules for a long while before writing anything at all — six entries now, each one a small, careful patch applied to a plan that had clearly never been designed to survive contact with an actual story.
*Seraphine Aurelle confirmed coming to Caldreth. Purification ceremony, related to the northern seal. Don't yet know timeline, but preparations already starting — could be weeks, could be sooner.*
She paused, pen hovering, and made herself write the sentence she'd been circling for several days now without quite letting herself land on it directly.
*I can't avoid a story that's actively coming to find me. I don't think I ever could, not really. I think I've spent five years building a very elaborate way of pretending otherwise.*
She read the line back twice, and felt the particular, settling weight of finally admitting something true rather than something merely useful. It did not feel like defeat, exactly. It felt closer to the moment, weeks ago, when she'd finally agreed to come to Caldreth at all — the specific, clarifying relief of abandoning a plan that had stopped working in favor of facing the actual shape of the problem in front of her, however much less comfortable that shape turned out to be than the fiction she'd been maintaining.
She thought, setting the pen down, of the very first rule she'd ever written, five years and a lifetime ago — *be forgettable* — and tried, honestly, to locate the version of herself who'd believed that single instruction would be sufficient for an entire lifetime of survival. She could no longer quite find her, not completely. Five rules had become six, six had nearly become seven, and somewhere in the slow accumulation of careful, necessary additions, the simple girl who'd believed disappearing was a permanent solution had given way to someone considerably more tired and considerably more honest about how much actual effort permanent solutions required.
She closed the notebook before she could write anything further, blew out the candle, and lay in the dark turning the new arithmetic over and over — one dangerous man whose schedule she'd memorized, one dangerous woman whose habits she knew nothing about, both converging, eventually, on the same household she now called home.
---
The notice appeared on the staff board outside the dispensary the following morning, before Elsie had even finished her first task of the day, and Hesketh read it aloud to the room with the particular brisk efficiency of a woman who'd clearly read a great many such notices in her time and expected several more before the season was through.
"All departments to prepare additional staffing for honored guests arriving within the coming weeks," Hesketh recited, scanning the page. "Dispensary to maintain expanded stock for visiting attendants and priestesses' retinue. Schedules across the household to be revised accordingly, including—" she paused, eyebrows lifting slightly, "—the Lord Regent's own calendar, which apparently is being cleared substantially to accommodate the ceremony's hosting requirements."
Elsie's hands went very still over the jar she'd been labeling.
"That'll be a relief for him, I imagine," Os said, mild as ever, not looking up from his own work. "Hosting his own household's salvation in person. Can't imagine he's looking forward to it, given how he's been lately."
"How's he been lately?" Elsie asked, before she could stop herself, the question slipping out with rather more interest than her usual careful blandness allowed, and immediately regretted the slip the moment Os glanced up, mildly curious at the unusual eagerness in her tone.
"Tense," Os said simply, with the particular economy of a man who rarely elaborated unless pressed, and didn't elaborate further now, returning his attention to his work as though the subject had already exhausted his interest in discussing it.
Elsie made herself nod, made herself return to her own labeling with the same studied calm she'd maintained throughout the conversation, and thought, privately, that *tense* was a considerably gentler word than the one she would have chosen, based on a voice she'd overheard once through a gap in a door, discussing a clock only its owner seemed able to see.
Two dangerous gravities, converging on the same household, at the same time, with schedules now explicitly rearranged to put them — and by unavoidable extension, every member of staff required to support the occasion — in considerably closer proximity than either had occupied before.
She thought, setting the jar down with careful, deliberate calm, of every rule she'd ever written, every map she'd ever built, every careful calculation that had carried her safely through five years and eleven separate near misses since arriving at Caldreth — and understood, with a clarity that left no comfortable room for denial, that none of it had been designed for this. Whatever was coming, it was coming regardless of how carefully she'd planned, and the only real choice left to her was how steadily she intended to meet it.
She finished labeling the jar in front of her with hands that had gone, for once, entirely steady, and told herself that steadiness, whatever else it failed to guarantee, was at least something she had practiced enough times now to produce on command, even when the ground underneath it had just shifted considerably more than she would have liked.
