A week after the notice appeared on the staff board, Caldreth had begun, visibly and rapidly, to change shape around her. Temporary pavilions rose in the outer courtyard where the recruitment encampment had once stood, their canvas walls stamped with the sigils of half a dozen noble houses sending advance attendants ahead of the ceremony proper. Supply carts arrived at all hours, hauling in linens and provisions and, on one memorable afternoon, an entire wagon's worth of ceremonial candles whose particular fragrance lingered in the dispensary's storeroom for days afterward. The household's careful, predictable rhythm — the one Elsie had spent weeks learning to navigate by — dissolved, day by day, into something considerably louder and considerably less mappable.
Strangers filled the corridors now in numbers she'd never had to account for — advance stewards from visiting households, junior clergy sent ahead to prepare ritual spaces, a small army of artisans repainting and regilding sections of the keep that hadn't seen fresh attention in years. The kitchens, by Birdie's increasingly exhausted reports, had doubled their staff overnight and were still struggling to keep pace with the demands of feeding everyone arriving early. Even Hesketh, usually so unflappable, had taken to muttering under her breath at the dispensary's growing supply requisitions, calculations that no longer balanced as neatly as they once had against a household three times its usual size.
She found, somewhat to her own surprise, that she didn't entirely mind it. Chaos, as she'd hoped, made an excellent disguise. Nobody glanced twice at a dispensary hand hurrying through unfamiliar corridors with her arms full of supplies when half the household was doing the exact same thing, in the exact same hurried, slightly harried manner, for entirely different reasons. She moved through the increasingly crowded halls with a freedom she hadn't enjoyed since her first careful weeks at Caldreth, anonymous not because she'd engineered it but because everyone else was simply too busy to notice anyone at all.
It lasted exactly as long as it took Hesketh to run out of other options.
---
"I need someone covering the east wing's noble quarters," Hesketh announced one morning, not so much asking as informing the room of a decision already made, the particular brisk tone she used when a problem had grown larger than her usual patience for discussion. "Stock checks, restocking, minor complaints — the sort of thing that shouldn't need a dedicated hand under ordinary circumstances, except these aren't ordinary circumstances, and I've got three times the usual household trying to function out of half the usual staff."
"Os has more seniority for that kind of post," Elsie offered, with the careful, mild tone of someone making a perfectly reasonable observation rather than someone actively trying to avoid the assignment about to land on her.
"Os is buried in the visiting clergy's special preparations and will be until this is over. Birdie's covering the new pavilions, which leaves," Hesketh said, with the particular flat finality of a woman who had already exhausted every other arrangement before settling on this one, "you. Starting today."
Elsie searched, briefly and unsuccessfully, for some plausible objection that wouldn't require explaining her actual reasons, and found nothing that would survive Hesketh's considerable impatience with excuses during a crisis. "Of course," she said instead, with the practiced, agreeable tone of someone accepting an assignment rather than walking directly into the one section of the keep she'd spent six weeks specifically learning to avoid.
"Good. Twice daily rounds, morning and evening. Full inventory list is on the board." Hesketh was already turning back to her own considerably larger pile of urgent problems, the conversation, as far as she was concerned, entirely concluded. "And Elsie — discretion, in that wing especially. Half the people you'll be serving up there outrank everyone you've dealt with so far combined."
---
The east wing's noble quarters occupied an entirely different category of space than anywhere Elsie had worked before — corridors lined with tapestries rather than herb-shelves, doors set with small brass nameplates rather than department labels, the particular hushed, expensive quiet of a place built for people who expected their comfort to be managed invisibly and without comment. She moved through it on her first round with considerably more care than the task strictly required, cataloguing exits and corners with the same anxious thoroughness she'd once applied to Bramblehollow's market hours, though the comparison felt almost laughable now, given how much further the stakes had traveled since then.
The wing itself was not, she discovered with some relief, particularly close to the forbidden east corridor she'd spent weeks carefully avoiding — a different east entirely, despite the confusing overlap in names, separated by enough distance and enough turns that she felt no familiar pull behind her sternum on her first several passes through. It was, at least, one variable she didn't need to recalculate alongside everything else, and she found herself almost grateful for the household's confusing geography, for once, rather than cursing it the way she usually did when trying to memorize a new section of corridors.
She spent her first full day in the wing simply learning its shape — which doors belonged to which households, which nobles preferred their deliveries left at the threshold and which expected a knock and a brief exchange, the particular rhythm of a section of the keep built for people considerably more demanding than the ordinary staff she'd grown accustomed to serving. It was tiring, methodical work, the kind she'd once have found almost soothing in its sheer practicality, except that every new door she catalogued carried with it the small, nagging awareness that she was now operating in territory considerably closer to the one name she'd spent six weeks specifically charting her movements around.
It was on the second day of her new rotation that she found the small sickroom, tucked at the end of a quiet corridor she hadn't yet had reason to visit, marked by nothing more than a closed door and the particular hush that surrounded rooms where illness was being managed rather than discussed. The corridor leading to it was noticeably quieter than the rest of the wing, the bustle of preparations seeming to fade the closer she came to it, as though even the household's general chaos understood, instinctively, that this particular space required a different kind of care.
A household attendant — an older woman Elsie hadn't met before, introduced briskly as Mrs. Adare — met her at the door rather than letting her past it, accepting the delivery of fever tonic and pain draught with the careful, practiced efficiency of someone who'd clearly performed this exact handoff many times before.
"For the household's relation," Mrs. Adare said, by way of explanation, in the brief, closed tone of someone offering exactly as much information as duty required and not a syllable more. "Long illness. Nothing that concerns the dispensary beyond keeping the standing order filled, precisely as written, without variation."
Elsie absorbed the careful vagueness of *the household's relation* the way she absorbed most carefully guarded information these days — noted, filed, not pushed against, because pushing against guarded doors in this particular household had a well-documented history of ending badly for the person doing the pushing. "Understood," she said, simply, and handed over the tray, though she found herself, walking away, unable to stop herself from wondering at the particular weight Mrs. Adare's careful phrasing carried. Not *patient*. Not even *family member*, plainly stated. Just *relation*, a word vague enough to mean almost anything, deployed with the precise care of someone who'd been specifically instructed never to say more.
---
It was on her third visit, two days later, that Mrs. Adare's careful brevity slipped, just slightly, under the particular strain of a household stretched thin by ceremony preparations.
"Exactly the same dosage as yesterday, mind, not a measure more or less," the woman said, checking the tray's contents against some mental ledger of her own with visible tension. "Lord Regent's instructions are absolute on this — precise timing, precise measure, no deviation regardless of how busy the dispensary gets this month. He checks the log himself, some evenings, if you can believe a man with a kingdom's business on his hands still finds time to count drops of willowbark." She said it with a faint, exhausted note of something that might have been admiration, might have been simple weariness at the standard she was held to. "Whoever this patient is, the Regent doesn't trust anyone's care of him but his own oversight. Hasn't, the whole time I've worked this post."
"How long has that been?" Elsie asked, with the careful, mild curiosity she'd practiced extensively for exactly this kind of question — the tone of idle small talk rather than genuine investigation, though her heart was doing considerably more work than the question's casual delivery suggested.
"Years now. Long before the current troubles up north, if that's what you're wondering. This isn't new, whatever it looks like from the outside." Mrs. Adare's expression closed slightly, the particular shuttering of someone who'd said marginally more than her instructions allowed and was now quietly correcting course. "That's all I'll say on it. Not my place, and not yours either, begging your pardon."
"Of course," Elsie said, easily, with no visible disappointment at the conversation's abrupt narrowing, though she carried the small handful of new details away with her as carefully as she'd have carried a fragile vial — *years now*, *long before the current troubles*, a steady, patient devotion that long predated any crisis the wider kingdom had thrown at the household, which meant whatever this was, it had nothing to do with politics or the seal or anything she'd been carefully tracking. It was simply, apparently, a man who had quietly and consistently cared for someone, for years, without anyone outside a handful of trusted attendants ever knowing the shape of it.
Elsie filed this away with considerably more attention than the comment's casual delivery suggested it deserved, turning the small, unexpected detail over in her mind as she made her way back through the hushed corridors toward the dispensary. *Whoever this patient is.* A relation important enough to warrant the Lord Regent's personal oversight of dosage logs, in the middle of preparations for the single largest event the household had hosted in years — important enough that he found the time for it despite everything else competing for his attention.
It was, she realized, the first genuinely human detail anyone had offered her about him since the voice through the door — not power, not fear, not the cold, calculating presence Theon represented or the abstract villain she'd carried for five years, but something considerably smaller and considerably harder to categorize: a man checking medicine logs himself, for someone he clearly could not bear to entrust to anyone else's care, even amid a crisis large enough to occupy an entire kingdom's attention.
She did not know what to do with the detail. She found, walking, that she wanted to know more about it anyway, which was its own small, uncomfortable confirmation of exactly how far the careful, simple fear of five years ago had already drifted from where it had started.
---
That evening, having finished her rounds and returned to the dispensary's narrow back room, she opened the notebook and considered, for a long while, how to record what she'd learned.
*Sickroom, east wing — household relation, long illness, name not given. L.R. personally oversees dosage log, checks it himself some evenings. Mrs. Adare implies this has always been the case, not a new precaution. Years now, predating the current crisis entirely.*
She paused, and added, after some hesitation: *Doesn't fit the shape of a man who only cares about power.*
She crossed that line out almost immediately, the way she'd crossed out similar lines twice before, and felt the particular, weary frustration of someone repeating a pattern she'd already identified as unwise and was apparently incapable of breaking regardless. She had told herself, after the voice through the door, that this kind of careful, sympathetic cataloguing of his character was not a habit she intended to continue. She had told herself the same thing again after Cordelia's comment, after the gallery, after every single one of the eleven — now considerably more than eleven — small moments that had chipped away at the simple, useful abstraction she'd spent five years maintaining.
She did not cross out the underlying observation, only the written record of it, which felt, even to her, like an increasingly thin distinction. She sat for a while longer with the pen idle in her hand, watching the candle's small flame, and thought about how strange it was that a man's private devotion to a sick relative had told her more about who he might actually be than five years of half-remembered plot ever had — and how she genuinely did not know what to do with that information now that she possessed it, beyond carrying it forward, carefully, into whatever happened next.
---
Hesketh found her there the following morning, brisk as ever, with a schedule update that landed in Elsie's chest with considerably more weight than the woman delivering it seemed to realize.
"Lord Regent's visiting the sickroom tomorrow, late morning," Hesketh said, checking her own ledger against the day's adjustments. "He's been keeping to evening visits mostly, but with the ceremony preparations eating every spare hour after dark this week, he's shifted to whatever window he can find. Which happens to be late morning. Which happens to be your rounds." She glanced up, entirely matter-of-fact, with no apparent awareness of the particular significance the words carried for the woman standing in front of her. "I'd normally swap your rotation for a day to avoid the overlap, but I haven't got anyone free to cover it. You'll simply need to be quick and discreet — in and out, tray delivered, no lingering. He won't have patience for an audience while he's visiting family, and frankly neither would I, in his position."
"Couldn't I deliver early, before he arrives?" Elsie asked, with the careful, measured tone of someone proposing a sensible logistical adjustment rather than someone making one final, desperate attempt at avoidance.
"Already tried rearranging it that way myself, given how thin we're stretched this week — his schedule's the one piece that can't move, not yours. Visits run from late morning straight through luncheon most days now, no telling exactly when within that window he'll actually be there, which means there's no safe gap to slip the delivery in around him." Hesketh said it with the particular brisk impatience of a woman who'd already spent more time on the logistics of one delivery than the task itself warranted, eager to move on to the dozen other fires demanding her attention. "It's one tray, Elsie. You'll manage. You've handled considerably trickier things than a man checking on his own family."
Elsie heard the words *family* and *tomorrow* and *no avoiding it* arrive almost simultaneously, and felt the careful, practiced calm she'd maintained through six weeks of near misses falter, just slightly, under the weight of finally hearing the one outcome she had organized her entire life around preventing spoken aloud as a simple, unavoidable scheduling fact.
"Understood," she said, because there was nothing else available to say, and because five years of practice had at least taught her how to keep her voice steady even when nothing else in her felt remotely steady at all.
She spent the rest of the day moving through her duties with the particular hollow, suspended focus of someone counting down toward something she could no longer postpone, no longer outmaneuver, no longer route carefully around with a well-timed errand or a borrowed excuse. Six weeks of rules, maps, and careful calculation, and tomorrow, in a small sickroom at the end of a quiet corridor, all of it would finally collide with the single thing it had been built, from the very first day, to prevent.
She found herself, that evening, rehearsing the encounter the way she'd once rehearsed escape routes — running through every possible version of how it might unfold, searching for the configuration least likely to end in disaster. He would be visiting family, focused entirely on whatever quiet, private grief or hope that visit carried with it, with no particular reason to spare more than a passing glance for the dispensary hand delivering a routine tray. She had, by now, six full weeks of practice at being exactly the kind of unremarkable presence a powerful man's attention slid past without catching. There was no specific reason to believe tomorrow would prove any different from the dozens of near misses she'd already survived in this household, each one ending in nothing more dramatic than a held breath and a steadier heartbeat once the danger had passed.
She told herself this several times, with diminishing conviction each time she repeated it, and found, lying awake well past the point where sleep should have claimed her, that some small, stubborn part of her was not rehearsing the encounter purely out of dread. Some part of it, however she tried to suppress the recognition, felt considerably closer to anticipation than she was prepared to examine directly tonight.
She blew out the candle eventually, having made no further progress toward actual rest, and lay in the dark listening to the household's distant, ceremony-driven bustle continue long past the hours it usually settled, thinking of a man who checked medicine logs himself, a sickroom she'd never properly seen inside, and a meeting now less than a single day away that she had spent five years specifically engineering her entire life to avoid.
