She woke earlier than usual, the particular too-alert wakefulness of someone whose body had decided sleep was a luxury the day didn't have time for, and spent the extra hour rehearsing exactly what she intended to say, exactly how she intended to stand, exactly how quickly she could deliver a tray and withdraw without giving anyone — least of all the one person whose attention she'd spent five years specifically engineering her life to avoid — any reason to look twice.
She practiced the words in front of the small, spotted mirror above her washbasin, the way she'd once practiced forgettable answers for Hesketh's first interview. *Good morning, my lord. Your standing order, exactly as logged.* Brief. Useful. Entirely without personality. She said it three times until it stopped sounding rehearsed, and told herself, gathering the tray and heading out before the bells had finished their morning sequence, that the entire encounter — if it could even be called that — would likely last under ten seconds.
There was, she reflected, walking the now-familiar route toward the east wing's quiet corridor, something almost funny about the careful, methodical way she'd prepared for this — five years of avoidance distilled, this morning, into a ten-second contingency plan rehearsed in front of a cracked mirror. She had survived dead goats, a creature with eyes like lamps, a suspicious household fixer, and a cruel noblewoman with nothing more elaborate than careful blandness and good timing. There was no particular reason to believe today would require anything more sophisticated than the same two tools, applied once more, with the same modest, sufficient success.
She arrived at the quiet corridor outside the sickroom considerably earlier than her usual round, hoping, with the particular fragile optimism of someone clutching at the one variable still theoretically within her control, that early enough might mean *before he's arrived at all*, and she could simply leave the tray with Mrs. Adare and vanish back into the wing's ordinary business before any actual encounter became necessary.
The plan held for exactly as long as it took her to round the final corner.
---
He was there already — earlier than Hesketh's schedule had suggested, earlier than Elsie's careful calculations had accounted for, moving down the corridor from the opposite direction with the brisk, contained stride of a man with considerably more demanding things waiting for his attention than this single quiet visit. There was no side passage to duck into, no errand convenient enough to invent on the spot, no version of this narrow, empty corridor that offered her anywhere to go except directly toward him or directly away, and away, with the sickroom door already in sight and the tray already in her hands, was no longer a plausible option.
They met almost exactly at the corridor's midpoint, close enough that retreat would have required an explanation neither of them had time for.
Up close, he was nothing like the half-formed shape she'd carried in her head for five years — not a monster assembled from secondhand fragments, but a tall, dark-haired man with a face composed entirely of sharp, controlled lines, the particular exhausted precision of someone who had trained himself, long ago, never to let his features betray more than he intended them to. There were shadows beneath his eyes that no amount of careful, deliberate composure quite managed to disguise, the visible cost of whatever sleepless arithmetic she'd once overheard him doing through a gap in a study door, and something about the visible tiredness, rather than softening the danger of him, only sharpened it — a man clearly running on borrowed reserves and still, even now, holding himself with the particular controlled authority of someone who had never once allowed weariness to be mistaken for weakness.
His eyes found her immediately, the way a man's eyes find anything unfamiliar in a space he'd otherwise have crossed without a second glance, and Elsie, for one suspended half-second, simply stood there, tray in hand, doing the only thing five years of careful training had prepared her for: nothing at all, perfectly still, perfectly unremarkable, waiting for the moment to pass her by the way every other dangerous moment in this household eventually had.
It did not pass her by.
---
It happened the instant their eyes actually met — not slow, not building, simply there all at once, the way lightning is there before thunder has time to explain itself. A warmth, sudden and entirely unbidden, traced up the length of her arm from fingertips to elbow, the same low, electric hum she remembered from the dream of the weeping door, except concentrated now, sharpened, drawn directly toward the man standing three feet in front of her as though something in her own blood had been waiting five years for exactly this proximity to finally wake up properly. She felt her breath catch, involuntary and impossible to disguise as anything else, and beside them, mounted in its bracket on the corridor wall, the small warded lamp flickered once — sharp, unmistakable, a single stutter of light that had no business happening to a steady household ward.
For one disoriented moment, Elsie genuinely could not tell whether the warmth had originated in her own chest or in the air immediately surrounding her, the sensation arriving with none of the careful, distinguishable edges most physical feelings carried — closer, somehow, to recognition than to any sensation she had a name for, the precise wrongness of a held breath finally finding the exhale it had been waiting years to release. She wanted, with an urgency that startled her, to step backward, to put distance between herself and whatever had just happened, and found, instead, that her feet had not moved at all, rooted to the stone floor with an obstinacy that had nothing to do with her own intentions.
Castian's expression shifted, instantly, from the brisk neutrality of a man passing through his own corridors to something considerably more focused — not anger, not the cold authority she'd half expected, but the precise, immediate attention of a man whose entire profession depended on noticing exactly this kind of anomaly the instant it occurred. His gaze moved, once, to the flickering lamp, and back to her, and something in his expression sharpened further, the particular look of a man recalculating an assumption in real time.
Elsie understood, with a clarity that arrived considerably too late to do anything useful with, that she had just done the single worst thing possible in this exact moment: she had reacted visibly, in front of the one man in the entire kingdom whose attention she had built her entire existence around avoiding, to something neither of them yet had a name for.
---
"Your name," he said.
Not a greeting. Not even, strictly, a question, despite the shape of it — simply two words, delivered in a voice she recognized immediately, with a cold, unpleasant jolt, as the same voice she'd overheard once through a gap in a study door, low and controlled and entirely unused to being denied an answer.
She made herself meet his eyes, because looking away now would have read as guilt rather than deference, and produced the response she'd rehearsed that morning, though it emerged considerably less smoothly than the mirror version had managed.
"Elsie, my lord. Dispensary assistant." She held the tray slightly forward, the small, practiced gesture of someone offering a reasonable explanation for her presence. "Your standing order. I was told to deliver it promptly, given the schedule's been moved up this week."
He did not look at the tray. He continued looking at her, with the particular, unhurried thoroughness of a man cataloguing details he intended to remember, and Elsie felt the full weight of that attention settle over her like something physical, considerably heavier than five years of careful preparation had braced her to withstand.
"How long have you been with the household?"
"Six weeks, my lord." True, and harmless, and she gave it without hesitation, because hesitation, she'd learned at considerable cost from Theon, was its own kind of evidence.
"And in six weeks, no one's mentioned to you that the wards in this corridor don't simply flicker." It was not, quite, an accusation. It carried, underneath the cold, measured surface of it, something closer to genuine curiosity — the precise tone of a man encountering a problem he hadn't anticipated and wasn't yet certain how seriously to take.
"No, my lord. I wasn't aware they didn't." Which was, technically, true, and offered absolutely nothing useful toward explaining why the ward in question had chosen this exact moment, in her exact presence, to misbehave.
---
He studied her for a moment longer — long enough that Elsie's pulse, already unsteady, climbed further, long enough that she became acutely, uncomfortably aware of every individual second passing between them in that narrow, otherwise empty corridor — and then, instead of pressing further, he simply held out one hand for the tray, the particular brisk, businesslike gesture of a man choosing to set a puzzle aside rather than abandoning it entirely.
"Hesketh runs a tight dispensary," he said, taking the tray from her hands with a precision that avoided any actual contact between them, the kind of careful, deliberate distance she suspected he maintained with everyone, not merely with her. "I trust the measure's correct."
"It is, my lord. I checked it twice myself before bringing it up."
"See that you continue to." It was, she understood, both a dismissal and a warning delivered in the same handful of words, the particular efficient economy of a man who rarely wasted breath on anything requiring more than the minimum necessary syllables. His gaze flicked once more to the lamp, still faintly dimmer than its neighbors, and then back to her, with an expression she couldn't quite categorize — not suspicion, exactly, but something adjacent to it, filed away rather than acted upon. "I'll be mentioning the ward to the household's pattern-keeper. If it happens again in your presence, you're to report it directly. Not to Hesketh. To Theon."
The mention of Theon's name, delivered so casually, landed with considerably more weight than Castian could have intended, and Elsie made herself absorb it without any visible flinch, filing the instruction away alongside everything else she now had to manage.
"Of course, my lord," Elsie said, with a calm she did not remotely feel, the specific, hollow steadiness of someone holding an entire structure upright through sheer practiced will while every individual beam of it threatened to give way underneath.
He held her gaze a moment longer than the exchange strictly required, the particular unhurried thoroughness of a man committing a detail to memory he hadn't expected to need, and then, without any further word, turned toward the sickroom door. Elsie, released from the direct weight of his attention, allowed herself, for one fraction of a second, to simply breathe.
---
It was as the door swung open, and before it closed again behind him, that she heard it — a single word, low, addressed to whoever or whatever waited inside the small, quiet room, spoken in a voice so completely unlike the one he'd just used with her that for a moment she genuinely doubted it had come from the same man.
"*Emeric.*"
Just the name. Nothing more, no greeting attached to it, simply a name spoken softly into a room he clearly entered expecting silence in return — and the tone of it, the particular worn, careful tenderness threaded underneath the single syllable, struck her with considerably more force than the lamp's flicker or the warmth in her own arm or even the direct, cataloguing weight of his attention a moment ago. It was the voice, she realized, of a man setting down every other version of himself the moment a door closed behind him — the Lord Regent, the cold interrogator of suspicious household anomalies, the careful, controlled authority that ran an entire kingdom's worth of business — all of it shed, apparently without effort, the instant he believed himself entirely unobserved.
The door closed. The corridor, abruptly, was empty and quiet again, exactly as it had been before he'd arrived, except that nothing about Elsie standing in it felt remotely the same.
---
She did not move for a long moment, listening to her own pulse settle by degrees, replaying the entire brief, devastating encounter in fragments too disordered to assemble properly yet — the warmth up her arm, the lamp's stutter, the cold precision of his questions, and underneath all of it, entirely unprepared for, that single soft word spoken to someone she now finally had a name for. *Emeric.* Mrs. Adare's careful, guarded *the household's relation*, given shape at last, attached to a tenderness that fit nowhere in the careful, terrible abstraction she'd spent five years building.
She made herself walk away from the door eventually, because lingering any longer risked exactly the kind of memorable behavior she'd spent six weeks specifically training herself out of, and found, walking, that her hands were not entirely steady, that her thoughts kept circling back to the precise sound of that single word rather than to the considerably more practical danger of having just attracted direct, personal attention from the most powerful and most dangerous man in the household.
*That was supposed to be the worst possible outcome,* she thought, retreating down the corridor with steps that felt less certain than they had any business being after six weeks of careful practice. *That was the exact thing I built five years of my life around preventing. And the thing I can't stop thinking about isn't the danger of it. It's the way he said that name.*
She reached the dispensary's familiar, crowded quiet before she fully trusted herself to speak to anyone, and busied herself with an inventory task she didn't strictly need to perform, grateful, for once, for the ceremony's general chaos and the way it gave her ample, plausible cover for needing a few minutes of silent, undemanding work before facing Birdie's inevitable questions about how the morning's deliveries had gone.
---
That night, by candlelight, she opened the notebook and found, for the first time since she'd started keeping it, that she had absolutely no idea how to record what had happened. Every previous entry had fit neatly into the careful structure she'd built across five years — threat assessed, danger catalogued, strategy adjusted accordingly. Tonight's entry refused that structure entirely, the way the day itself had refused every careful plan she'd brought into it.
She tried, twice, to begin with something useful — *L.R. now aware of an anomaly in the east corridor's ward, connected to my presence specifically* — and found, both times, that the sentence felt thin and incomplete in a way her usual entries never did, as though the actual shape of what had happened simply refused to compress into the tidy, threat-assessment language she'd relied on for years. The danger was real, and worth recording, and she made herself note it properly in the end — his instruction to report any recurrence to Theon rather than Hesketh, the particular cataloguing attention he'd turned on her, the fact that she was now, indisputably, a known quantity to the one man whose notice she'd spent five years avoiding. All of that belonged in the notebook, clearly and without sentiment, exactly as every other danger had.
But underneath the careful, necessary record of the danger, she found herself circling back, again and again, to the part of the encounter that had nothing to do with risk at all.
She wrote, eventually, the only sentence that felt remotely honest about the rest of it:
*Met him today. Said three words to me, more or less. I don't think either of us understood what just happened in that hallway.*
She read it back, and did not cross it out, which felt, in its own way, like the most significant departure from five years of established habit that she'd made yet. She set the pen down, blew out the candle, and lay in the dark for a long while, listening to the household's distant, ceremony-driven bustle continue in the corridors far below, and admitted to herself, finally and without the careful, deniable hedging she'd practiced for weeks, that *stay away from him* had stopped being a plan some time ago and had become, instead, simply a sentence she intended to keep telling herself, whether or not either of them still believed it.
Somewhere beneath her, in a quiet room at the end of an east-wing corridor, a man who had spent the entire encounter sounding like winter sat beside his brother's bed and spoke, she suspected, in considerably gentler tones than he'd ever once used with her — and Elsie, lying awake with that single soft name still echoing in her thoughts, found that she could not decide which version of him frightened her more: the cold, cataloguing stranger in the corridor, or the man capable, apparently, of setting that coldness down entirely the moment he believed no one was watching.
