She woke the next morning having slept considerably less than she needed, and spent the better part of breakfast catching herself mid-replay of the previous day's encounter for what was, by her own rough count, at least the fourth time since waking. *Your name. How long have you been with the household. See that you continue to.* She turned each fragment over with the same careful, methodical attention she usually reserved for genuine threats, examining tone, word choice, the precise length of his pauses, as though sufficient analysis might eventually explain why a handful of clipped, businesslike sentences from a dangerous stranger had taken up considerably more space in her thoughts than any actual danger she'd faced in six weeks at Caldreth.
She told herself, pouring her tea with rather more attention than the task required, that this was simply ordinary post-crisis processing — the ordinary, slightly obsessive cataloguing that followed any close call, no different from the days she'd spent replaying her conversation with Theon after his first visit to the dispensary. She had survived a direct, personal encounter with the single most dangerous man in the kingdom. Of course some part of her wanted to examine every angle of it, the way you'd examine a wound to confirm it had actually closed.
It was a reasonable enough explanation, and she might even have believed it entirely, if not for the small, stubborn detail that she had never once, after any of her actual close calls, found herself dwelling on the particular sound of a man's voice for reasons that had nothing to do with assessing whether he intended to harm her. She had analyzed Theon's tone for threat. She had analyzed Cordelia's spite for weakness she could exploit. What she was doing this morning, turning over the precise cadence of *see that you continue to* like a phrase worth savoring rather than surviving, did not fit neatly into either category, and she found herself, pouring a second cup of tea she didn't particularly want, simply declining to name what it actually resembled.
She was still in the middle of failing to fully convince herself of this when Theon walked into the dispensary, and the morning, already complicated, complicated itself considerably further.
---
He did not waste time on proportions or household records this time. He came directly to the point, with the particular focused economy of a man who'd already decided the conversation mattered enough to skip the pleasantries.
"Lord Regent informed me of an anomaly in the east-wing corridor yesterday morning," Theon said, without preamble, settling into the same careful, watchful stillness she remembered from their first conversation. "A ward flicker, in your presence, with no clear cause. He asked me to follow up directly rather than waiting for it to recur."
"I wasn't aware there was anything to follow up on," Elsie said, with the specific, mild bewilderment she'd practiced extensively since recognizing the value of looking confused rather than composed. "The lamp flickered. I didn't do anything to it. I didn't even know it was unusual until he mentioned it."
"Where exactly were you standing? How close to the lamp's bracket?" Theon's questions arrived in quick succession, precise enough that she suspected he'd rehearsed them as carefully as she'd once rehearsed her own answers, and she found herself, despite every careful preparation, having to think rather harder than she would have liked to reconstruct the physical details of a moment she'd mostly experienced as a single overwhelming rush of sensation rather than a measured sequence of positions and distances.
"Three feet from it, maybe four. I wasn't measuring." She let a small note of genuine, unguarded irritation creep into her voice — the particular, useful texture of someone mildly annoyed at being interrogated over something she hadn't caused and didn't understand. "I was carrying a tray and trying not to be in anyone's way. I wasn't paying attention to the lamp until it flickered, and then I was mostly paying attention to the fact that the Lord Regent was looking at me like I'd personally broken something."
"Did you feel anything?" Theon asked, and the question, deceptively simple, landed with considerably more weight than the previous ones, because it cut directly toward the one piece of the encounter she had absolutely no intention of describing accurately. "Heat. Cold. Any physical sensation at the moment the lamp flickered."
"My arm went a bit warm," Elsie said, after a beat she made sure looked like ordinary recollection rather than careful calculation, offering the truth in the most useless possible shape — accurate, undeniable if anyone else had somehow noticed, and entirely consistent with a dozen perfectly mundane explanations. "I assumed I'd simply been standing too close to the lamp's heat. Didn't think much of it until afterward."
"Lamps in that bracket don't generate enough heat to notice at three feet," Theon said, mildly, watching her with the particular unblinking attention that made the small dispensary feel considerably smaller than it actually was.
"Then I suppose I don't have a better explanation than you do," Elsie said, with a small, helpless shrug that cost her considerably more composure to produce than it appeared to.
---
It was, she thought, watching his expression with careful peripheral attention while appearing to focus entirely on the inventory shelf beside her, exactly the right note of harmless exasperation — plausible, slightly defensive, the tone of someone genuinely inconvenienced by a mystery rather than someone constructing one. Theon studied her for a long moment, the particular methodical stillness she'd learned to dread, and something in his expression eased, fractionally, though not entirely.
"How long has this been happening?" he asked. "The flickering. Have you noticed it before, in other parts of the household?"
This was the considerably more dangerous question, and Elsie took the half-second she allowed herself before answering with the same careful precision she'd used once before, in this exact room, on this exact man. "Not that I've noticed. I'm not exactly trained to notice ward behavior — I measure tinctures, I don't study wards." A small, self-deprecating shrug. "If something's wrong with the corridor's ward, that seems like a household problem, not a dispensary one. I'd be happy to avoid the area entirely if that would help, honestly. I've no particular desire to be standing near anything that flickers when powerful men walk past."
It was, she calculated, a useful offer to make — practical, harmless-sounding, and considerably easier to grant than to investigate. Theon, to her cautious relief, seemed to weigh it seriously.
"That may become necessary," he said, after a moment. "Lord Regent's asked the household's pattern-keeper to examine that section of warding directly. If the disturbance recurs in your presence before that examination's complete, you're to report it immediately — to me, not Hesketh, exactly as he instructed. If it happens a second time without explanation, I'll need to bring you to the pattern-keeper myself, for a more thorough look." He paused, studying her with the particular, unhurried thoroughness that always made her skin prickle. "I'd rather that not be necessary. Easier for everyone if this turns out to be nothing more than an old ward finally wearing thin, the way old things tend to."
"I'd certainly prefer that explanation," Elsie said, with perfect, practiced sincerity, and meant it with her entire chest, for reasons considerably more substantial than Theon could have guessed.
---
He left not long after, apparently satisfied enough to set the matter aside for the moment, and Elsie spent the remainder of the morning doing the particular grim arithmetic she'd grown unfortunately skilled at since arriving at Caldreth. A pattern-keeper's direct examination was, by any reasonable measure, the single most dangerous outcome currently on the table — a trained specialist, presumably equipped with instruments considerably more sophisticated than a surveyor's trembling needle, looking directly for the source of an anomaly that lived, as far as she could tell, in her own blood rather than in any household structure.
She thought, working through the problem with her hands occupied by an unrelated task to keep her face appropriately neutral for anyone passing through the dispensary, of every previous near miss she'd survived since arriving here — the surveyor, the flickering ward she'd never noticed before that morning in this exact corridor, the careful, methodical way danger had always announced itself through some instrument or some watchful person noticing a reading their training told them shouldn't exist. A pattern-keeper would be the most sophisticated of all of them, trained specifically to interpret exactly the kind of disturbance she'd produced, and she had no reasonable confidence that any amount of practiced blankness would survive direct scrutiny from someone whose entire profession was built around seeing through it.
She had two choices, as far as she could determine. She could avoid the east-wing corridor entirely, which would mean abandoning the sickroom deliveries that had become, however reluctantly, part of her assigned duties — a sudden, unexplained refusal that would itself attract exactly the kind of attention she was trying to avoid. Or she could continue the deliveries and simply hope, with no actual evidence to support the hope, that whatever had happened yesterday required Castian's specific, particular presence to trigger, rather than the corridor itself.
It was, she decided by midafternoon, the second option that offered the better odds, mostly because it was testable. If the anomaly required his presence specifically — some reaction tied to the man rather than the place — then delivering the tray on a day or at an hour when he wasn't visiting should produce nothing at all. A small, contained experiment, conducted as quietly and as scientifically as she could manage, to determine exactly what she was actually dealing with before Theon's patience for unexplained mysteries ran out entirely.
She found, formulating the plan, a small, familiar comfort in having something to actually do about the problem, rather than simply waiting, helplessly, for the next disaster to announce itself.
---
The afternoon's delivery, as it happened, gave her the perfect test. Mrs. Adare confirmed, at the door, that Castian had visited that morning already and wasn't expected back until evening — which meant Elsie's afternoon round would carry her past the same stretch of corridor, the same lamp, entirely without him.
She walked the route with the same careful, measured attention she'd have given any genuine experiment, watching the lamp's bracket as she passed beneath it, holding her breath slightly despite herself, half-expecting some echo of yesterday's warmth to flare up regardless. She catalogued the corridor's ordinary stillness with the same disciplined attention she'd once given Bramblehollow's market hours — the particular quality of afternoon light through the high windows, the muffled, distant sounds of ceremony preparation elsewhere in the keep, the small, mundane creak of the old floorboards underfoot that she'd never once noticed until she was actively listening for anything unusual at all.
Nothing happened. The lamp burned steady. Her own pulse, when she checked it, remained entirely ordinary, and she found herself almost disbelieving the sheer normalcy of it after the previous day's overwhelming sensation, as though her own body had simply decided, in his absence, that there was nothing remarkable about this corridor at all.
She delivered the tray, exchanged a few brief words with Mrs. Adare about dosage timing, and walked back toward the dispensary with the small, useful satisfaction of a hypothesis successfully tested — confirmation, as close as she could manage without admitting the actual stakes to anyone capable of helping her investigate properly, that whatever had reacted yesterday had reacted to him specifically, not to the corridor, not to the lamp, not to anything she could simply route around.
This was, by any reasonable measure, exactly the information she needed. A danger tied to one specific man's presence was a danger she had six full weeks of practice managing — she knew his schedule, or had known it before this week's ceremony preparations had scrambled it, and a known, predictable variable was infinitely more manageable than an unexplained property of an entire wing's architecture. She allowed herself, walking, to feel something close to professional satisfaction at having narrowed the problem so cleanly, the particular methodical pride of a woman who had spent five years turning fear into solvable arithmetic.
It should have felt like good news. It mostly did. But walking back through the quiet, ordinary corridor, lamp burning steadily beside her, she became aware, with some private embarrassment, of a small, specific disappointment threaded underneath the relief — the particular, deflating quiet of an afternoon that had gone exactly according to plan and somehow felt less satisfying for it than the considerably more dangerous morning before.
She did not examine that disappointment closely. She had learned, across several weeks of similarly unwelcome discoveries, that some feelings were considerably easier to manage if you simply declined to look at them directly. She busied herself instead, for the remainder of the walk, with the considerably more productive exercise of planning her next several days' rounds around the schedule fragments she'd managed to piece together from Mrs. Adare's offhand comments — morning visits when he could manage them, evening when ceremony business consumed the day, a pattern she intended to study and avoid with exactly the same disciplined attention she'd once applied to learning his habits in the first place.
---
That evening, restocking the wing's supply cabinet near the sickroom corridor, she overheard Mrs. Adare speaking with another attendant in the small alcove just beyond the doorway, their voices pitched low but not quite low enough to escape the otherwise empty hallway entirely.
"He asked after the new dispensary girl this morning," Mrs. Adare was saying, with the particular mild, unguarded tone of someone discussing an unremarkable household detail rather than anything worth concealing. "Wanted to know if her measures had been correct the past week, whether she'd had any trouble adjusting to the rotation. Told him I'd no complaints — measures her own dosages twice, never sends anything up without checking it herself first. Careful girl, that one."
"Strange thing for him to ask after, given everything else on his plate this week," the other attendant said.
"He's always particular about who handles Emeric's care. You know that as well as I do." A small, weary laugh. "Wouldn't surprise me if he's already had Theon look into her background twice over, knowing him."
"Suppose that's fair, given the ward business," the other voice agreed. "Can't blame a man for being careful, with his brother as fragile as he is. Imagine losing the last family you've got left to something as stupid as an untrained hand mixing the wrong measure."
"Quite," Mrs. Adare said, and the conversation drifted, after that, into the considerably more ordinary territory of household supply shortages and a steward's recent complaint about candle allocations, leaving Elsie standing very still in the corridor outside, holding a stack of bandages she no longer remembered the purpose of, turning over the single new piece of information that had slipped past everything else in that exchange.
*His brother.* Not a vague relation, not the careful, deliberately uninformative *household's relation* Mrs. Adare had offered her weeks ago, but a plain, simple fact, dropped casually into a conversation that wasn't meant for her ears at all. Emeric was Castian's brother. The single, tender word she'd overheard through a closing door now had a shape she could finally hold properly — not merely affection for an unnamed relation, but the particular, fierce devotion of a man with no family left except one fragile, ailing brother, guarded with a precision that bordered on obsession precisely because there was nothing else of his old life left to protect.
Elsie, frozen midway through restocking a shelf of bandages, kept her hands moving with the same careful, mechanical precision she'd have used had she heard nothing at all, and felt her own pulse do something considerably more complicated than the simple relief of yesterday's successful experiment had prepared her for.
*He asked after me.* Not suspicion, by the sound of it — or not only suspicion. A question about her care of Emeric, framed in the ordinary, practical language of a household administrator checking on staff performance, except that she now understood, with a clarity she hadn't possessed an hour ago, that the man asking it had spent considerably more of his limited, overstretched attention on her than a single brief corridor encounter should reasonably have produced, and had spent it in service of protecting the one person left in the world he apparently still allowed himself to love without reservation.
She finished restocking the shelf with hands that had gone, despite her best efforts, noticeably less steady than they'd been a few minutes before, and walked back toward the dispensary turning the new, unwelcome knowledge over and over, unable to decide — any more successfully than she'd decided anything else about him so far — whether it frightened her more, or considerably less, than she'd expected it to.
