Three days left.
Elsie had counted down without meaning to, the same way she'd counted eleven days in the early weeks of her time at Caldreth, except with inverted dread — then, she'd been counting something she'd wanted to avoid arriving; now, she was counting toward something she couldn't predict the shape of, something that might, if it went wrong, unravel half the careful work she'd spent two months quietly doing in this household, and might, if it went right, give a young man in a quiet room at the end of a corridor a slightly better chance at something longer than what he currently had.
She found, working through the morning's preparation tasks with her hands occupied and her mind somewhere else entirely, that she could not entirely resolve how she felt about that. The ceremony succeeding was, by every strategic calculation available to her, the single most dangerous outcome for her specific position in this story — the more successfully Seraphine completed the purification, the more closely the story's heroine would be embedded in Caldreth's daily life, the more certain the remainder of the plot's original machinery would proceed on schedule. She had spent five years understanding, at a gut level, that the closer the story's central events unfolded, the smaller her margin for continued invisibility became.
She also found, turning an adjusted preparation over in her hands, that she genuinely, entirely, wanted it to succeed anyway, and that this fact had apparently been true for some time without her noticing exactly when it had stopped being a conflict worth fighting.
She had just arrived at this uncomfortable conclusion for approximately the fifth time that morning when Mrs. Adare appeared at the dispensary door.
---
"The tincture for Lord Emeric's morning dose," she said, as she said every morning, accepting the small, labeled vial with the same careful, practiced efficiency she brought to every aspect of her work. She lingered, though, which was slightly unusual — Mrs. Adare was not, typically, a woman who lingered.
"I wanted to say — I imagine you already know, given how much you've been involved in his care, but —" She paused, with the particular careful hesitation of someone selecting words for a conversation they hadn't entirely planned to have. "The ceremony is partly for Emeric. Not only for the ward, not only for the general purification the realm needs. Lord Regent has been working toward this for three years. Seraphine Aurelle specifically, because she's the only practitioner working today with the particular gift needed to address what Emeric's condition actually is."
"Which is?" Elsie asked, with the careful, mild tone she'd perfected for extracting medical information without appearing to extract it.
"Not an illness, precisely. Or not entirely." Mrs. Adare looked at the vial in her hands, at the door, back to Elsie, with the expression of someone deciding, in real time, how much she was willing to say. "It's a working. Old, deep, the kind that predates most of what we understand about how such things function. He's been sleeping — not truly sleeping, not in any natural way, but held in a state between sleeping and waking by something that should have killed him outright and didn't, for reasons no one has ever fully explained to my satisfaction." She stopped. "I don't know why I'm telling you this. I suppose because you've been as careful with him as anyone I've seen in three years, and you've never asked questions you weren't entitled to ask, and it seemed — it seemed like something you should know, given the work you've been doing."
"Thank you," Elsie said, and meant it with every part of herself that had spent two months watching a man check his brother's medicine logs by candlelight, for reasons she now understood were considerably more desperate than she'd ever quite allowed herself to name aloud.
---
She processed the information the way she processed most things she hadn't been prepared for — methodically, with her hands still moving through their usual tasks, assembling the pieces she already had against the new shape Mrs. Adare had just provided, and watching the picture clarify into something she should have seen much sooner and hadn't, because she'd been so carefully, deliberately not looking at the parts of it that lived too close to the truth.
*A working. Old and deep. Not killing him, only holding him.* She thought of the sealed corridor, the pull behind her sternum, the cold light she'd watched pulse from the east wing on her very first night at Caldreth. She thought of the voice she'd heard through a study door — *twenty years it held steady, three months of cracking, and now a full collapse in a single night* — and understood, finally, the nature of the clock he'd been counting down against. Not a failing ward. Not an architectural problem. A working done to his brother, twenty years ago, holding a young man in some state between life and death that the people who'd done it had apparently not considered murder worth preventing, and Castian had spent twenty years managing the slow, careful business of keeping him as comfortable as possible while looking for the one thing that might actually undo it.
She thought of every evening he'd presumably spent in that quiet room, talking to someone who could not answer. Every medicine log checked with personal, obsessive precision. Every resource of an entire kingdom's administration directed, quietly and for years, toward finding a single practitioner with the right gift in the right configuration to address something most of the realm had apparently decided was simply the way things were.
She put the mortar down carefully, because her hands had gone quite unsteady, and stood very still for a moment, breathing, until they steadied again.
---
She had not intended to attend anything resembling the afternoon's meeting. The dispensary's preparation work had simply carried her past the antechamber at the precise moment a household steward was directing the assembled parties toward their seats, and the tray of restorative tea she'd been asked to deliver had become, unavoidably, a reason to enter the room and place settings at the table before the session began.
She worked quickly, efficiently, with the particular focused attention of someone who had about four minutes to complete a task before the room filled with people she absolutely should not be in the same space as — and managed to place every cup before the first figures began arriving from opposite doors, at which point the only remaining option was to retreat to a corner with the tray and wait for an appropriately unobtrusive moment to exit.
She had, in two months of careful household navigation, been in many spaces at inconvenient times. She had rarely been in a space quite this inconvenient.
Seraphine arrived first, with one attendant, and arranged herself in her seat with the easy, practiced composure of someone accustomed to sitting down to meetings considerably more charged than this one. She looked, at this closer range than the doorway glimpse, precisely as tired as she had the first time Elsie had seen her, and precisely as unheroic about it — a young woman in slightly better clothes than the ones she'd been traveling in, with the attentive, focused expression of someone who had a considerable amount of work in front of her and was applying herself to the preparation.
Aldous arrived second, caught Elsie's eye across the room with the brief, direct acknowledgment of a man who remembered faces, and said nothing because the meeting was beginning, for which Elsie was quietly grateful.
Castian arrived last, from a side door, with Theon directly behind him.
---
He sat, and began the session with the brisk, efficient authority she recognized from every other context in which she'd seen him exercise it — but now, watching him from the corner with her tray and her carefully maintained invisibility, she had the additional layer of Mrs. Adare's morning disclosure sitting underneath every observed word and gesture, and the picture it produced was considerably different from anything she'd had access to before.
He needed Seraphine in the way you needed something you couldn't provide yourself — absolutely, without alternative, with the particular, carefully suppressed desperation of a man who had been working toward this single point for years and was, at last, within days of finding out whether the years had been enough. She watched him talk to her with the precise, controlled courtesy of someone managing a relationship too important to risk with a single misplaced word — not warmly, because warmth would imply a personal investment he apparently did not intend to display, but with a careful, sustained respect that communicated, to anyone watching closely, that he understood exactly what he was asking her to do and considered the debt significant.
Seraphine received this with the same attentive, professional composure she'd brought to her entrance, and responded to his questions with the clear, direct precision of someone who had come prepared and had no patience for the kind of elaborate political maneuvering that apparently characterized most of the discussions she'd been dragged into across the past several years. They understood each other, Elsie thought, watching — not warmly, not easily, but accurately, two people who had each assessed the other and arrived at the same basic conclusion: useful, necessary, and unlikely to waste each other's time.
Once or twice, in the pauses between technical discussion, Seraphine glanced around the room in the same searching way she'd turned her head through the clergy wing doorway, as though something in the space was still prompting the particular, unfocused unease she'd described to the cleric as simply exhaustion.
Elsie kept absolutely still in her corner and breathed very carefully.
Aldous, across the table, appeared to be conducting his own quiet observations of everyone present with the unhurried attention she'd noticed during their brief corridor encounter. Twice, he said something that redirected the conversation onto a more productive track at the precise moment it was about to stall — not through force, simply through the particular, easy authority of someone who understood how conversations moved and knew when to apply a small, well-placed push. He had the look, she thought, of someone who'd learned through experience that the most effective thing a person could do in a room full of powerful people negotiating delicate matters was to be slightly less visible than everyone else while being slightly more attentive than anyone expected.
She watched Castian's eyes flick toward Aldous at the second of these redirections, and watched the expression in them — not gratitude, not quite, but the complicated, involuntary acknowledgment of someone who had a long, unresolved history with the person who'd just done them an accidental service.
---
The meeting ended, and the room emptied by degrees — Seraphine's attendant first, then Seraphine herself, then Aldous with a brief, professional nod toward the room's remaining occupants, and finally Theon, who left last and paused at the door in a way that suggested he knew she was in the corner and had decided, for his own private reasons, not to mention it.
Castian moved toward the far door. He passed within a few feet of her corner — not close, but close enough that she would have been visible from that angle if he'd looked, and close enough that she caught, in passing, the particular quality of his stillness after a prolonged period of sustained performance, the specific kind of exhaustion that accumulated after hours of maintaining the precise calibration of every word and look and pause.
He glanced toward the corner.
Their eyes met, briefly, for the second or perhaps the third time that day, depending on how one counted.
He looked — she thought, watching him — like a man who had been carrying something impossibly heavy for an impossibly long time, and who had, somewhere along the way, simply incorporated the weight so completely that he'd largely stopped noticing it. Except in these moments, perhaps. In the aftermath of an afternoon spent conducting the delicate, exhausting business of managing all the pieces of the only thing that mattered, and having not yet retreated somewhere private enough to set any of it down.
She nodded. Small, quiet, the particular acknowledgment that required no words and offered nothing beyond the simple fact of having seen.
He nodded back, equally quiet, and continued toward the door.
---
She walked back to the dispensary thinking about the weight of things, and about how long a person could carry them before the carrying became simply the shape of their life, indistinguishable from their own bones. She thought about five years of her own particular set of weights, and about how she'd spent most of those years telling herself they were precautions rather than burdens, and about the way his nod had looked, from where she'd been standing, more like a person who'd briefly been seen than like a person who'd been surveilled.
She thought, too, of something Mrs. Adare had said that morning — *he's been working toward this for three years* — and laid that next to the image she'd carried since her first night at Caldreth, the cold light pulsing in the east tower like something that breathed instead of burning. Twenty years. Not three years of frantic searching, but twenty years of managing the unmanageable, arranging the best care possible around a situation that had no good resolution, waiting for the single particular gift that might provide one. And when the opportunity finally arrived, he'd opened Caldreth to more political risk than she suspected he'd have accepted for any other reason, managing every relationship in that room with the precision of someone who understood that a single wrong note could cost him the only chance he had left.
She arrived at the dispensary with the particular, inconvenient clarity of a decision she hadn't precisely made yet but had apparently already arrived at, the way decisions sometimes did when you'd been approaching them from the far side for long enough that by the time you reached them they'd already become simply the thing that was true.
She wanted the ceremony to succeed. She wanted it not as a strategic calculation, not as the careful outcome of a risk assessment, but simply, personally, in the way one human being wants something good to happen for another who has been carrying something heavy for a very long time.
*This,* she thought, is not what Rule Three was built to prevent. Rule Three was built to prevent you from getting entangled. You are already entangled. You have been entangled for weeks. The question now is only what you intend to do about being entangled, and the answer to that particular question is not something any rule you've ever written is equipped to address.

Maeve found her that evening with an expression she recognized — not the easy, cheerful worry of someone sharing general household anxiety, but something more focused, more specifically directed.
"Something's happening," she said, dropping her voice without quite seeming to notice she'd done it. "In the laundry, we've been hearing things — from the people who've been working directly with the clergy's retinue. Apparently the priestess herself asked one of the head stewards, today, whether there was anything unusual about the household's population. Whether there were any newcomers she should know about."
"What kind of newcomers?" Elsie kept her voice even.
"That's the thing — she wasn't specific. Just asked about anyone who'd joined the household in the past several months. Anyone with an unusual history, or background, or —" Maeve paused. "She apparently described it as 'a presence that doesn't quite fit the usual patterns of the space.'"
Elsie absorbed this information with the careful, contained attention she'd been applying to dangerous things since the first week of her life in this household.
*A presence that doesn't quite fit.*
"That could mean any number of things," she said.
"It could," Maeve agreed, in the tone of someone who suspected it didn't. "I just thought you should know. Given that you're still relatively new here yourself. I didn't want you to be caught off-guard, if anyone came asking."
Elsie thanked her, which was true and insufficient, and sat with the information long after Maeve had gone — turning it over in the particular, methodical way she had for things too dangerous to leave unexamined, with the ceremony three days away and the most perceptive woman in the kingdom actively, deliberately, searching the household for exactly the shape of thing that Elsie was.
The clock, which had been counting down since the moment she'd chosen Caldreth, had just acquired a new and more immediate meaning.
She sat for a long while in the quiet, turning the evening's accumulated information over and over — Mrs. Adare's disclosure, the meeting she shouldn't have attended, the nod that had meant more than a nod had any business meaning, and now Maeve's warning, each piece arriving in the same relentless, unstoppable sequence as everything else this story had sent her way since she'd had the particular bad judgment to walk into a household full of people whose lives were already in motion without her. She had come to Caldreth to disappear into its edges. She was increasingly not at the edges. She suspected, blowing out the candle at last, that she had not been at the edges for quite some time, and that the ceremony three days away was either going to clarify that situation considerably, or complicate it beyond any map she still had the ability to draw.
