Two days.
Elsie had woken with the number already in her head, the same way she'd woken every morning for the past week with the count sitting there before she'd entirely finished the transition from sleep, patient and unavoidable. Two days now — and the household had contracted around the ceremony the way a city contracts around a storm's approach, every person and every department funneling their attention and energy toward the single point that everything was building to, the smaller peripheral concerns falling away or being absorbed into the larger shape of the preparation.
She had mapped her morning accordingly, as she'd mapped every morning for the past several days — the clergy wing avoided entirely, the ceremony preparation areas skirted where possible, her routes chosen for the maximum probability of moving through the household's increased density without encountering any of the three people whose proximity presented the most specific danger. The corridors had grown stranger over the past several days, hung with white banners and ritual markings she didn't recognize, the incense from the clergy's spaces drifting further through the building than it had during their first week of residence. The household's ordinary smell — stone and wood and the faint, persistent suggestion of a kitchen working at full capacity — had been overlaid with something older and more deliberate, the smell of a working being prepared rather than simply a ceremony being staged.
She was tired. She had been tired for days now, the particular fatigue of someone managing too many variables simultaneously at a too-high stakes level, and she did not have the luxury of setting any of them down until this was over.
She was in the middle of her first task of the morning — a routine inventory of the dispensary's preparation stock — when Hesketh stopped in the doorway.
"I need your eyes on the ceremonial batch before anything else today," she said, with the brisk efficiency that had been her default mode for two weeks straight. "The final check — every component, confirmed and signed. You know the formulas better than anyone in this room, and Seraphine's people are sending someone to collect at noon. Nothing goes up without your signature."
---
The batch had been assembled in a separate preparation room, set apart from the dispensary's daily work specifically to avoid contamination of the ritual components — dried and fresh ingredients in careful, labeled groupings, oils and tinctures in sealed glass, each grouping corresponding to a specific stage of the ceremony's working as Seraphine's clergy had specified it. Elsie moved through the inventory with the focused, methodical attention the task required, checking component against specification, quantity against requirement, source against the careful notes she'd made during the initial preparation weeks ago.
She was three-quarters of the way through when she found it.
The substitution was not obvious — it had been made by someone who knew enough to know that the two plants looked similar and shared a general family resemblance, but not enough to understand that the specific compound in the correct plant was the entire point of including it. The replacement would behave similarly in most preparations. In a purification working aimed at a particular kind of deep, structural ward-work, the difference between what was there and what should have been there was, by Elsie's rough estimation, the difference between a working that fully addressed its target and a working that achieved perhaps sixty percent of it.
Sixty percent was not nothing. But sixty percent, when the target was a twenty-year-old curse holding a young man between sleeping and waking, was considerably less than what a man who'd spent three years working toward this single opportunity had spent those three years working toward.
She stood very still for a moment, looking at the substitute component, and felt the particular, specific weight of a decision presenting itself before she'd asked it to.
---
Hesketh was not in the dispensary. The note on her board said she'd been called to an emergency in the kitchens — some crisis involving the ceremonial serving arrangements that had apparently escalated past what the kitchen's own staff could manage — and would return by midmorning. It was currently just past eight.
She found Birdie, who confirmed that Os was in the back storeroom and Hesketh was definitely occupied, and then spent approximately ninety seconds standing in the preparation room doorway doing the arithmetic she had known, when she found the substitute component, she would end up having to do.
Leave it and say nothing: the ceremony proceeds with a reduced working. Emeric's chances of improvement from this single opportunity — the one Castian has spent three years arranging — drop significantly. She does not draw additional attention to herself in the forty-eight hours before the ceremony when Seraphine is actively looking for exactly the kind of anomaly she represents.
Report it and fix it: the ceremony proceeds correctly. Emeric's chances hold. She is forced, in the process, to interact with people who have been assigned authority over the ceremony's components at the precisely worst possible moment of their collective attention span, potentially placing herself in front of the most perceptive woman in the kingdom when that woman is already looking.
She had genuinely believed, when she'd first arrived at Caldreth, that these were not the kinds of calculations she would end up making.
---
Theon, she was told by his aide, was currently in a formal session with the visiting nobility's representative that could not be interrupted before ten. The aide offered to pass a message and waited for her to provide one.
"Please tell him," Elsie said, "that there's a component issue with the ceremonial batch that requires a decision before the noon collection, and that I'll be available to explain in detail as soon as he's free." She paused. "If he's unable to break before ten, I'll need to escalate to the Lord Regent directly."
The aide's expression suggested this was not a contingency he'd encountered before, but he wrote it down.
He returned three minutes later to inform her that Lord Regent Vael would see her now.
---
The private study was at the end of a corridor she'd passed the entrance to several times but never entered, on the opposite side of the keep from the sickroom wing and the ceremonial spaces both — a quieter part of the household's main building, with a solidity to its proportions that suggested it had been built for long occupancy rather than formal reception. The aide knocked, was acknowledged, and withdrew.
Castian was behind a desk considerably more working than ceremonial — papers in organized stacks that nonetheless occupied most of the available surface, a map of something pinned to one wall, the particular accumulated archaeology of weeks of intensive work visible in every available corner. He was not, she noticed, dressed for receiving visitors. He was dressed for a long day of work, and the dark circles beneath his eyes had, if anything, deepened since the last time she'd been close enough to observe them. The ceremony was forty-eight hours away. She did not imagine he had been sleeping well.
She had four seconds, approximately, to register all of this before he looked up.
"Dispensary," he said, identifying her by the uniform without visible surprise, which meant he'd either retained the aide's message more specifically than usual or had simply noted her enough, across weeks of various encounters, that her face had become information he processed quickly. "What's wrong with the batch?"
She explained, succinctly — the component, the substitution, the specific chemistry, the estimated impact on the working's efficacy. She watched him listen with the particular focused attention he brought to things that actually mattered to him, and felt the familiar quiet satisfaction of competence being directed toward exactly the right problem at exactly the right moment.
"Can it be corrected in time?"
"Yes. The correct component is in our regular stock. It would take approximately forty minutes to re-prepare the affected portion and the replacement is straightforward — the only reason it takes that long is that the oil needs time to set properly before it's stable for transport."
"Do it." No hesitation, no consultation, no committee. "I'll let Seraphine's people know the noon collection is pushed to one. They'll accommodate it." He made a brief note on one of the papers in front of him, then looked up again. "Is that everything?"
It was, practically speaking, everything.
"Yes, my lord," she said, and should have left.
---
She was turning toward the door when he said: "Sit down."
Not a command, quite — too quiet for that, and lacking the particular tone he used for commands. Something between a suggestion and a request, the kind of thing said to someone you'd prefer didn't leave quite yet without being willing to require them to stay.
She turned back. Looked at him. He was looking at her with the particular direct, unhurried attention she'd learned to simply meet rather than deflect, and there was something in his expression that was different from the official, businesslike register he'd been operating in for the past several minutes — not warmer, exactly, but less armored, the specific expression she'd first seen under the rain and had subsequently catalogued, with some care, as the version of him that existed when he'd set down whatever he usually performed for the people around him.
"You came here to tell me something that could have waited until Theon was free," he said. "Or that you could have left for Hesketh to handle when she returned."
"The timeline was tight," Elsie said. "There wasn't—"
"That's not what I mean." He wasn't accusing — simply noting, with the precise, accurate attention she'd come to expect from him, that the decision she'd made this morning had been, on its face, strategically inadvisable for someone who'd been working as hard as she had for the past several weeks to limit her visibility. "Sit down."
She sat.
---
He was quiet for a moment, looking at the papers in front of him rather than at her, the kind of silence that asked nothing and offered space.
"Are you afraid?" he said, finally.
She looked at him. He was still looking at the papers.
"Of what, specifically?" she asked, which was the honest answer, because there were several things she was afraid of and she wanted to know which one he was asking about.
"Of what comes after the ceremony." He glanced up then, briefly, with the expression she'd catalogued as the one that appeared when he wasn't managing his own face carefully enough, or had decided not to bother. "Whatever outcome. Either one."
She was quiet for a moment. The question was not, she understood, only about her. It had the particular quality of a question asked by someone who needed to say the thing themselves and had found, in the asking, a way to do it obliquely. He was afraid. He was afraid in the specific, quiet way of a man who had organized his entire existence around a single outcome for twenty years, and was now within forty-eight hours of knowing whether those twenty years had been enough.
"Yes," she said. "Both outcomes feel dangerous, just in different directions."
"Yes." He said it simply, like a confirmation of a position he'd already known to be accurate, and returned his attention to the papers. "I find I've been thinking, lately, that the versions of things we build in our heads to manage uncertainty are almost always less accurate than whatever actually happens. Which is not a comforting observation."
"No," Elsie agreed. "But it's an honest one."
"I've been trying, lately, to at least be honest with myself about what I'm hoping for." A pause. "It seems like the minimum requirement. Given what's at stake."
She thought, listening, of the entire careful architecture of what she'd been pretending to herself for weeks — the rules she'd kept writing and crossing out, the distance she'd kept constructing and watching dissolve, the particular, persistent gap between what she told herself she wanted and what she apparently actually wanted, which she'd been documenting with increasing specificity in a small notebook for approximately two months. "I think I've been trying to do the same thing," she said. "With mixed results."
Something crossed his expression — brief, not quite a smile but in that direction, the particular involuntary shift of a man recognizing himself in a description he hadn't expected from outside. "Mixed results," he said, "is the most accurate summary I've encountered."
A silence settled, not uncomfortable. The study's particular, quiet weight held them both in it — two people who had, by entirely different routes and for entirely different reasons, arrived at the same morning, in the same city, with the same forty-eight hours ahead of them and the same particular kind of uncertainty about what those hours would leave behind.
"For what it's worth," Elsie said, with the particular, careful honesty she'd been practicing since the rain, "I hope it works. The ceremony. For the right reasons, not the strategic ones." She paused. "I thought you should know that."
He looked at her for a long moment — directly, the way he'd looked at her in the corridor on the first day, except that the expression behind his eyes had changed entirely from what it had been then. Not cataloguing. Not suspicious. Simply present, attentive, the look of a man actually listening to what was being said rather than processing it for what it might mean about something else.
"Thank you," he said. The same two words he'd said in the dispensary a few days ago, but this time, Elsie thought, they landed differently on both sides of them.
---
She left not long after, with the morning's task completed and a new timeline established for the batch and a quiet certainty, walking back through the household's increasingly frantic preparations, that the conversation she'd just had was not one she had any good explanation for, from the perspective of any rule she'd ever written. She had gone to report a problem. She had stayed because he'd asked her to. She had said things she'd been keeping carefully unexpressed in a small, guarded notebook for weeks.
She had also, she realized, approaching the preparation room to begin the corrected batch, made the decision about the component without any genuine hesitation — had made it, if she was honest about the sequence, before she'd even properly started the arithmetic, in the same moment she'd found the substitution and understood what it meant for the person it was intended to help.
The arithmetic had simply been the time it took her to accept the decision she'd already made.
She thought about this while she worked, moving through the corrected preparation with careful, unhurried attention. The decision that should have required a complex calculation — the safety of remaining hidden against the importance of Emeric's chance at something better — had not, in practice, felt like a calculation at all. It had felt like noticing that a wrong thing needed correcting and correcting it, the same way she'd corrected Hesketh's assessment of his adjusted dosage, the same way she'd corrected the formula weeks earlier, the same way she'd corrected every dispensary error she'd caught across two months of careful attention to a case she'd never been asked to care about quite so specifically as she had ended up caring about it.
She thought, mixing the preparation with the focused, methodical attention it required, about the thing she'd said to him in the dispensary several days ago — *when you don't have the ability to simply fix things after they go wrong, you develop the habit of looking for the signs before they do* — and recognized, with a clarity she hadn't entirely had when she'd said it, that it was no longer quite as accurate as it had been when she'd first learned it.
She had the ability, this morning, to have let a wrong thing proceed for the sake of her own safety. She had chosen, instead, to fix it. That was, she acknowledged, measuring the oil with the particular care the timing required, not the behavior of someone whose primary operating principle was still survival at any cost.
She was not certain, exactly, what its operating principle actually was. She had a growing suspicion, measuring a second component with the same careful attention, that the notebook she'd been keeping for two months probably contained the answer, if she was willing to read it honestly.
She thought she might be, finally, almost willing.
