A week into the dispensary, Elsie had built something she privately thought of as her map — not on paper, never on paper, but laid out with painstaking precision across the inside of her own skull, the way she'd once mapped Bramblehollow's safest hours and quietest corners. Caldreth's keep was a great deal larger and considerably more dangerous to misjudge, but the principle held: know where the people who mattered tended to be, and arrange to be somewhere else.
She knew, after a week, that the steward's morning rounds passed the dispensary at the second bell and not before. She knew that the kitchens emptied their slop water through the east courtyard drain precisely when the bells called midmorning, which meant that particular courtyard was best avoided for the smell alone, never mind anything else. She knew which staircases the upper household favored and which ones the staff used instead, and used the staff ones exclusively, on principle, even when they added an extra five minutes to an errand. She knew, with rather more dread than the other facts combined, the precise width of the gap she needed to leave between herself and the east corridor's entrance to avoid feeling that low, unsettling pull again — six paces, she'd determined, by the simple if undignified method of testing it twice and flinching both times.
She had even, in odd quiet moments between tasks, begun sketching the shape of the keep itself in her mind the way she might once have sketched a town she meant to leave — which gates led where, which wings housed which departments, where the nobility's quarters gave way to the staff's, where the kitchens' noise and the dispensary's quiet gave her a few unobserved minutes to simply breathe. It was, in its strange way, the most thorough piece of intelligence work she had ever undertaken, and she found herself almost respecting the scale of it, the way you might respect a particularly elaborate lock even while resenting the fact that someone had felt the need to install it.
It was, she told herself, simply an extension of the work she'd already been doing for five years. A bigger map. The same principle.
It did not feel like the same principle. It felt, if she was honest with herself in the particular unsparing way she usually reserved for the deepest hours of the night, like living inside the story rather than beside it, which was precisely the one thing every rule she'd ever written had been designed to prevent.
---
The dispensary settled into its own particular rhythm soon enough, the kind that made even a dangerous place start to feel, in small ways, ordinary. Hesketh ran the small department with the brisk efficiency of a woman who'd long since stopped expecting gratitude and had learned to be satisfied with competence instead. There were two other assistants besides Elsie — a quiet older man named Os who handled most of the heavier compounding work, and a younger woman called Birdie who talked enough for the three of them combined and seemed entirely undeterred by Elsie's careful blandness.
"You're new enough that you still flinch at the bells," Birdie observed, on the third day, watching Elsie startle slightly at the chime marking the change of guard. "You'll stop. Everyone stops, eventually. Three months in, you won't even hear them."
"I'll look forward to that," Elsie said, and meant it more sincerely than the casual tone suggested, because the alternative to *stopping eventually* was apparently *flinching at every loud noise in a household that ran almost entirely on bells*, which sounded exhausting on a timescale she didn't want to contemplate.
The name came up more often than Elsie would have liked, in the easy, unremarkable way names belonging to powerful men tend to surface in the households built around them — *the Lord Regent wants the headache tincture sent up before evening court, the Lord Regent's been keeping later hours than usual this month, the Lord Regent doesn't care for the new steward's handwriting and has said so twice.* Each mention landed in Elsie's chest with the same small, private jolt, gone before anyone could possibly have noticed it, a held breath she released the instant the conversation moved on to something else.
She had expected, somehow, that working inside his household would dull the reaction over time. A week in, it hadn't yet. If anything, hearing him discussed so casually — as a set of preferences and moods and scheduling demands, rather than the abstract, terrible shape he'd occupied in her memory for five years — made the whole thing stranger, not easier. The monster from the book she'd half-read in another life apparently also disliked bad handwriting. It was an oddly humanizing detail to receive secondhand from a woman complaining about ink smudges.
---
She got her first real look at the household's other danger on the fifth day, in a corridor outside the dispensary, in the form of a tall, exquisitely dressed woman dressing down a junior maid with the kind of cold, practiced cruelty that suggested long experience and considerable enjoyment.
"I asked for the rose oil an hour ago," the woman said, in a voice pitched to carry to every nearby ear without ever quite rising into a shout. "Not the lavender. Not whatever this is. The *rose* oil, which you would know if you'd been listening instead of standing there with your mouth open like a fish."
The maid, white-faced, stammered an apology and fled. The woman — tall, dark-haired, dressed in a deep blue that probably cost more than Elsie had earned in three years at Bren's shop — watched her go with the faint, satisfied air of someone who'd enjoyed the performance more than the outcome, and then turned, briefly, to survey the corridor for any remaining audience, as though the entire exchange had been staged at least partly for whoever happened to be watching.
Her eyes passed over Elsie without slowing. Elsie kept her own gaze fixed politely on the middle distance, the practiced blankness of five years doing exactly the work it had been built for, and the woman moved on without a second glance, skirts whispering against stone, leaving behind her the particular brittle silence of a corridor that had just watched someone get hurt and decided, collectively, not to mention it.
"Lady Cordelia," Birdie murmured later, when Elsie asked, in the careful, sideways way of someone fishing for gossip without admitting to fishing. "Minor noble family, attached to the household on account of some arrangement nobody below her rank actually understands. Spends most of her energy trying to be noticed by people who matter and most of what's left taking it out on people who don't." Birdie shrugged, with the particular weary fatalism of someone who'd long since stopped being surprised by court behavior. "She's been angling for the Lord Regent's attention since before I started here, by the way. Hasn't worked yet, far as anyone can tell, which I think is half of why she's so unbearable to everyone smaller than her. Avoid her if you can. She's the kind that remembers a face she's decided to dislike."
Elsie filed the warning away precisely, alongside everything else she was learning to fear in this enormous, glittering, deeply unsafe building, and made a private, additional note to herself that *court intrigue* was apparently a real and present feature of her new life rather than a distant abstraction confined to half-remembered chapters. She had not missed it, in five years of avoiding it. She did not anticipate beginning to enjoy it now.
It occurred to her, walking away from that corridor, that Cordelia's particular brand of cruelty was at least a familiar shape — petty, transparent, entirely explicable by ordinary human vanity. Whatever waited behind the sealed door in the east corridor was not familiar in any sense she could comfort herself with. She found, oddly, that she preferred Cordelia's kind of danger by a wide margin, simply because it was the kind she already knew how to survive.
---
The second name she learned to fear came from Os, of all people, who rarely spoke more than necessary and therefore tended to be believed without question when he did.
"Watch for Theon," he said, apropos of nothing, while measuring out a tincture with the unhurried precision of a man who'd done it ten thousand times. "Lord Regent's closest man. Handles most of what the Regent doesn't have time for personally, which in this household is considerably more than you'd think."
"What should I watch for, specifically?" Elsie asked, in the tone of someone gathering practical advice rather than someone whose entire existence had just acquired a new and specific source of dread.
"Notices things." Os shrugged, set down his pestle, and offered nothing further by way of elaboration, which somehow made the warning land harder than a longer explanation would have. After a moment, though, he relented slightly, the way a careful man sometimes did when he judged a warning worth the extra words. "Used the household's old steward against himself once, three years back. Man had been skimming supply orders for years, careful about it, never the same amount twice. Took Theon a month to notice the pattern nobody else had even thought to look for. Steward's gone now. Nobody talks about where." He picked the pestle back up. "If he starts asking you questions that seem more curious than they need to be, that's usually the moment to start being considerably more careful than you have been."
Elsie thanked him, filed the name beside Cordelia's on her growing mental ledger of household dangers, and spent the rest of the afternoon doing an inventory of her own recent behavior with the specific, anxious thoroughness of someone checking for unlocked doors after hearing about a burglary. The surveyor's trembling needle. The forbidden corridor's pull, twice now. Her own unnervingly precise medical knowledge, already noted and remarked upon by Hesketh. None of it, individually, was damning. All of it together, in the hands of someone who *noticed things*, felt considerably less safe than she would have liked.
She caught her first glimpse of him two days later — a lean, watchful man in plain dark clothes, unremarkable enough to pass through any crowd unnoticed except for the particular stillness of his attention, the way his gaze moved across a room methodically rather than idly, cataloguing rather than merely seeing. He did not look at her for longer than anyone else in the corridor. That, somehow, did nothing to reassure her.
---
That evening's errand took her past the east corridor's junction again, a crate of prepared remedies bound for the old archive stores, and this time she went prepared, the way she'd have prepared for any known danger in her old life: breath held the moment she crossed the threshold she'd marked in her memory, steps counted under her breath, eyes fixed forward with a discipline that bordered on physical pain.
The pull came anyway, lower and gentler than it had the first time, a faint tug behind her sternum rather than the insistent yank she remembered — and she genuinely could not have said, walking quickly past it with her count steady and her breath held tight, whether the lessening was a sign that she was simply growing accustomed to it, or a sign that whatever waited behind that sealed door had decided, for its own unknowable reasons, that it no longer needed to pull quite so hard to be noticed.
She did not examine the second possibility too closely. She had learned, in five years of careful self-management, that some thoughts were more useful left unexamined until she had the resources to do anything productive about them.
---
She added a new line to the notebook that night, beneath Rule Five, in the careful, deliberate hand she used for things she intended to actually follow rather than simply consider.
*Rule Six: learn the household's full map within two weeks. Know exactly where the Lord Regent is likely to be, at every hour, well enough that I never once find myself in the same room by accident. Watch Cordelia. Watch Theon, more carefully. Trust nothing about this place that feels, even briefly, ordinary.*
It was, she reflected, considerably more ambitious than any rule she'd ever written before — not simple avoidance, but active intelligence-gathering, the kind of careful, methodical work that would have served her well in either of her two lives if she'd ever needed it for anything less terrifying than this. She found, writing it, a small and unexpected flicker of something almost like competence, almost like control, in a situation that had otherwise stripped both away from her entirely.
She read the six rules over once, from the beginning, in the candlelight — *be forgettable, be useless to anyone important, stay away from titles, invisible doesn't always mean alone, learn the household's full map* — and felt the particular vertigo of watching a single, simple philosophy slowly grow more complicated with every fresh disaster it was forced to accommodate. The girl who'd written Rule One had wanted nothing more than to disappear entirely. The woman writing Rule Six was learning, instead, how to survive in plain sight, which felt like an entirely different skill, however much she wanted to pretend it was simply more of the same.
Before blowing out the candle, she did one more small, ordinary thing: she wrote a short note, nothing more than a few careful lines, and handed it the next morning to a cart driver bound back toward Bramblehollow on the regular grain circuit, paying him a coin to see it delivered to Bren's shop. *Arrived safely. Found work. The walls here are thick and the wages are good, just as Maeve promised. Hope the shop's doing better with the curfew lifted. Don't alphabetize anything new without me — I'll only have to redo it when I'm back.* It was a small, foolish thing to send, costing her more than she could entirely justify, and she found, handing the coin over, that she didn't regret a single piece of it. Some part of her, it seemed, still needed proof that the life she'd left behind continued to exist somewhere, waiting, even while she stood in the single most dangerous place she'd ever willingly walked into. She thought, watching the cart roll away with her few careful words tucked inside it, that there was something almost funny about how much comfort a handful of ordinary sentences could provide, addressed to a man who would probably only grumble about the extra correspondence and never once admit he'd been glad to receive it.
---
It was well past the household's last bell when she finally noticed the light.
She'd gone to her window for no particular reason — restlessness, mostly, the specific kind that came from spending an entire day cataloguing danger and having nowhere left to put the accumulated tension of it — and found herself looking out over the keep's darkened rooftops toward the east wing, where a single thin line of light traced the edge of one particular tower against the night sky.
It was not torchlight. Torchlight flickered, warm and orange and alive. This light held perfectly, coldly still, a pale blue-white that reminded her, with an unpleasant jolt, of the warding lines she'd seen threaded through Caldreth's outer walls the day she'd arrived — except this light pulsed, slow and deliberate, in a rhythm that felt less like architecture and more like breathing. She found herself counting the intervals between pulses without quite meaning to, the way you count a stranger's heartbeat through a wall when you can't sleep, and could not have said afterward whether the rhythm she'd counted matched anything human, or anything at all.
She watched it for longer than was strictly sensible, standing at her window in the cold, until somewhere across the keep a single bell rang out of its usual schedule — not the steady, expected marking of an hour, but a sharper, more urgent note that set off a brief flurry of distant voices and hurrying footsteps before settling, after a few tense minutes, back into silence. She heard, faintly, what might have been a door slamming somewhere far below, and then nothing at all, the household closing back over whatever had happened the way water closes over a dropped stone.
Nobody came to explain it. Nobody, in the dispensary the following morning, mentioned it at all, and something in the careful, deliberate way the others avoided the subject — Os's pointed focus on his pestle, Birdie's uncharacteristic quiet, Hesketh's brisk refusal to acknowledge the question even existed when Elsie tried, carefully, to ask whether anything unusual had happened overnight — told Elsie, more clearly than any direct answer could have, that whatever had happened in the night was not the kind of thing junior staff were meant to ask about.
She thought, lying awake afterward, of the forbidden corridor, of the pull behind her sternum, of a light that breathed instead of burning. She did not yet have the pieces to put any of it together into a single coherent shape. She only had the same low, persistent unease she'd carried since the night a creature with eyes like lamps had stood beneath her own window in Bramblehollow, watching, patient, certain it had already found exactly what it came to find.
*Whatever's happening in this household,* she thought, before sleep finally claimed her, *I don't think it's finished happening yet. And I don't think, whatever Rule Six promises me, that I'm going to be able to map my way around all of it.*
She slept, eventually and badly, and woke the next morning already rehearsing the careful, forgettable face she'd need to wear through whatever the day decided to bring, the same patient face she had worn for five long years and suspected she would need to wear for a great many more before this particular story finally let her go.
