Two weeks into the dispensary, Elsie had refined Rule Six into something close to an actual schedule, written nowhere but memorized completely: the Lord Regent took his morning correspondence in the east study before the third bell, held audiences through midday in the main hall, and retreated to his private working chambers by early evening, where he remained, by every account she'd gathered, until well past the hours any sensible household expected its master to still be awake. She had built her own movements around that schedule with the same careful precision she'd once applied to Bramblehollow's market hours, and for nearly two weeks, it had worked exactly as well as she'd hoped.
The schedule had given her, in those two weeks, something she hadn't expected to find inside Caldreth's walls at all: a strange, narrow kind of confidence. She knew which corridors to avoid at which hours. She knew that the third bell meant the east study and the eighth meant the main hall and somewhere past the eleventh he disappeared into rooms she had no business knowing the location of, let alone visiting. She had begun, without quite admitting it to herself, to take a certain private pride in the precision of it, the way she might once have taken pride in a particularly well-organized shelf of tinctures — proof that careful attention, applied consistently enough, could turn even the most dangerous environment into something survivable.
It worked right up until the morning his schedule simply refused to behave.
"He's moved every appointment twice already today," Birdie reported, breathless from some errand of her own, dropping into the chair beside the dispensary's worktable with the particular relish of someone who genuinely enjoyed household chaos as long as it wasn't aimed at her personally. "Steward's beside himself. Something's got the Regent rattled, and when he's rattled, nobody's schedule survives intact."
Elsie absorbed this information with considerably more dread than Birdie had delivered it, because a man whose schedule no longer matched the careful map in her head was a man she could no longer reliably avoid, and a man she could no longer reliably avoid was, by the exact logic of every rule she'd ever written, the single most dangerous variable currently active in her life. She spent the better part of the morning quietly revising her plans around the disruption, rerouting two separate errands to avoid corridors she could no longer guarantee were safe, and felt, by midday, the particular low-grade exhaustion of someone who'd spent several hours doing complicated arithmetic with no reliable numbers to work from.
She did not have long to wait before that variable found her directly.
---
"His afternoon headache's flared again," Hesketh announced, not looking up from the ledger she was annotating, in the brisk, unceremonious tone she used for problems that needed solving rather than discussing. "Os is up to his elbows in the burn salve order and Birdie's still chasing down that missing crate from yesterday. I need the willow-and-feverfew draught sent up to his private study, and I need it sent up now, not after someone's finished a more convenient task."
Elsie's first instinct was refusal, dressed up in whatever reasonable-sounding excuse she could assemble fast enough — but no excuse arrived quickly enough to be useful, and Hesketh, who tolerated a great many things in her assistants but not hesitation when a patient was waiting, had already pressed the small tray into her hands before Elsie's mouth could produce anything more articulate than a delayed, unconvincing nod.
"Up the east staircase, third door past the gallery," Hesketh added, already turning back to her ledger. "Knock once, leave it if no one answers immediately. He doesn't like to be disturbed when he's working, and frankly neither do I want to hear about it if you disturb him."
*Leave it if no one answers immediately* sounded, to Elsie's ears, like the single most generous instruction she'd received in two weeks of careful avoidance — a built-in excuse to set the tray down, knock once for form's sake, and retreat before any actual encounter became necessary. She held onto that plan with both hands the entire walk up the east staircase, rehearsing it the way she might once have rehearsed an escape route, and arrived at the third door past the gallery with her heart already hammering considerably harder than the simple act of climbing stairs could explain.
---
The door stood not quite closed — a finger's width of gap between frame and wood, enough to let a thin line of candlelight spill into the corridor, enough, she realized with a fresh spike of alarm, to let voices through as well.
She knelt to set the tray down as quietly as she possibly could, every motion exaggerated with care, and that was the precise moment a voice reached her through the gap — low, controlled, edged with a coldness that didn't shout because it had never once needed to shout to be obeyed.
"You will tell me the moment the reading changes. Not an hour after. Not when it's convenient to report it. The moment."
A second voice answered, lower and harder to make out, words she couldn't quite distinguish beyond a general tone of careful, wary agreement — Theon's voice, she suspected, though she had no way to confirm it and considerably more important things occupying her attention just then than confirming voices.
Elsie froze, halfway to setting the tray fully down, suddenly and acutely aware that any sound at all — wood against stone, breath too loud in the quiet corridor — might announce her presence at the worst possible moment, while the single most dangerous man in the kingdom was discussing something he clearly did not intend for outside ears.
"It's worsening," the first voice continued, quieter now, and something in the quality of that quiet — not menace, not the cold authority of a moment ago, but something closer to exhaustion carefully restrained — made Elsie's breath catch in a way she hadn't expected. "Twenty years it held steady. Three months of cracking, and now this — a full collapse in a single night, with no warning, no pattern I can find in any text I've read. If it continues at this rate, I don't —" He stopped himself, mid-sentence, the particular abrupt silence of a man who'd nearly said something he wasn't willing to finish saying aloud, even to someone he apparently trusted enough to discuss the rest of it with. "We don't have the time I thought we had. That's all you need to understand for now."
"And if it fails entirely?" the second voice asked, low.
"Then I find another way. I am not without other ways." A pause, harder-edged than the words around it. "I did not survive this long by running out of them."
Elsie, kneeling in the corridor with a tray of feverfew draught balanced precariously between her hands and her own pulse roaring loud enough in her ears to nearly drown out the conversation entirely, understood approximately none of what she'd just heard in any specific, useful sense — no names, no clear referent for *it* or *the reading* or whatever was failing at an alarming rate behind that east corridor's sealed door — and understood, in a far more general and far more unsettling sense, considerably more than she wanted to.
Whatever was happening to this household, the man at its center was afraid of it. Not performing fear for effect, not strategic anxiety deployed for some political purpose she couldn't yet see — actually, privately, exhaustedly afraid, in the particular unguarded way people only let slip when they believe no one outside the room is listening.
She found herself, kneeling there, doing the thing she always did with information she couldn't immediately use — sorting it, despite herself, into categories. *Twenty years stable* meant whatever was failing had been failing, or at least contained, since roughly the time she'd first arrived in this world, which she filed away with the particular cold attention she usually reserved for facts that might matter later, even if she couldn't yet say how. *A full collapse in a single night* sounded uncomfortably similar to the strange cold light she'd watched pulse over the east wing two weeks ago, and the out-of-schedule bell that had followed it. The pieces did not yet form a shape. They had, at least, stopped being entirely separate pieces, which felt like its own small, unwelcome kind of progress.
---
She did not knock. She had absolutely no intention of announcing herself into the middle of whatever she'd just overheard, and the careful permission Hesketh had granted her — *leave it if no one answers immediately* — felt, in this specific moment, less like an instruction and more like the single mercy standing between her and a conversation she desperately did not want to have.
She set the tray down with a care that bordered on surgical, easing it onto the stone floor a fraction of an inch at a time, until it rested without so much as a whisper of sound against the ground. Then she rose, just as carefully, and began retreating down the corridor with steps measured to absolute silence, the way she'd once learned to move through a sleeping household after a bad dream, every placement of her foot considered before it landed.
She had made it nearly to the gallery, far enough that the voices behind her had faded to indistinct murmur, before she allowed herself to breathe properly again, and even then only in short, controlled measures, the kind that wouldn't betray how hard her heart was working.
*That was his voice,* she thought, walking quickly now, putting as much distance as decorum allowed between herself and that door. *That was the actual, literal voice of the man I built five years of my life around avoiding.*
It had not sounded the way she'd expected. She had spent five years carrying an idea of him assembled from secondhand fragments and half-remembered plot — a villain's voice, by every reasonable expectation, ought to have sounded like cruelty, like the cold satisfaction of someone who enjoyed the suffering his power allowed him to inflict. What she'd heard instead was something considerably harder to categorize: control stretched thin over something that sounded, underneath all of it, genuinely frightened. A man counting down against a clock he couldn't see, doing math on a disaster he hadn't caused and couldn't entirely prevent.
It did not make him safe. She reminded herself of that with some firmness, several times, on the walk back to the dispensary. A frightened man with that much power was not automatically a gentler one, and whatever was failing behind that sealed door — whatever *the reading* and *the collapse* referred to — was very likely the same thing that had pulled at her own chest twice now in that very corridor, which meant, by any reasonable accounting, that she had more reason to fear him and his household's secrets than she'd had an hour ago, not less.
She tried, walking briskly back through the gallery, to reconstruct the villain she'd carried in her head for five years — the cold, terrible shape from a half-remembered book, the man whose name alone had been reason enough to build an entire life around avoidance. She found, with some frustration, that the reconstruction kept slipping, the careful abstraction refusing to hold its shape against the memory of an actual voice, tired and controlled and human in a way no abstraction ever managed to be. It was easier, she thought, to fear a monster than to fear a man doing frightened, frantic math against a clock only he could see. The second kind of fear required her to keep thinking about him as a person, which was precisely the habit she most needed to avoid.
It simply did not feel that way, walking back, and she resented the discrepancy considerably more than she resented the man himself.
---
"You're back fast," Birdie observed, when Elsie returned to the dispensary considerably paler than she'd left it. "Did he actually answer the door for once?"
"No one answered. I left it." Both true, and both, Elsie reflected, doing a great deal of careful work to avoid the much larger, much less convenient truth currently lodged somewhere behind her ribs.
"Funny," Birdie said, not looking up from the jars she was sorting, "Hesketh said the same thing happened to the last girl who took something up there during one of his rattled spells. Came back white as milk, wouldn't say why. Guess he's not pleasant to be near when something's gone wrong." She said it lightly, with the easy carelessness of secondhand gossip, entirely unaware of how precisely her words landed, and Elsie made herself nod and say nothing further, grateful that Birdie's curiosity, for once, had found a more interesting target in the jars than in her own suspiciously quiet companion.
She busied herself with an inventory task that didn't strictly need doing, mostly to keep her hands occupied while the rest of her caught up with what had just happened, and found, over the course of the afternoon, that she could not entirely set the voice aside the way she usually managed to set aside the dozen other small terrors this household generated daily. It kept resurfacing — the specific cadence of *I am not without other ways*, the particular silence after *if it continues at this rate, I don't*, the sound of a powerful man being honestly, privately afraid in front of exactly one other person, never imagining a third was kneeling in the corridor outside, hearing every word.
She told herself, repeatedly and with diminishing success, that none of it mattered to her. He was still the man at the absolute center of every danger in this story. Whatever fear she'd overheard did not undo five years of careful avoidance, did not make the forbidden corridor any less forbidden, did not change a single one of the rules that had kept her alive this long.
She told herself this. She did not entirely manage to believe it.
---
That night, by candlelight, she opened the notebook and began, with her usual careful precision, to write down what she'd learned — a habit of five years, useful information catalogued and considered, the way she'd always processed anything dangerous enough to require it.
*Overheard L.R. discussing some failing condition — "the reading," "collapse," twenty years stable now worsening rapidly. Connected to east corridor, almost certainly. Sounds personal, not merely political. He is afraid of it, genuinely, which —*
She stopped there, pen hovering, and read the sentence back, and felt something uncomfortable settle in her stomach at the realization of exactly how much careful, sympathetic attention she'd just devoted to analyzing the inner state of a man she had spent five years specifically organizing her life around never thinking about at all. She had not written a single line about the danger of what she'd overheard. She had written, instead, an entire paragraph about what it meant that he was frightened, as though that detail mattered more than the actual threat it implied.
She thought, staring at her own unfinished sentence, of every careful rule that had carried her this far — be forgettable, be useless, avoid titles entirely — and tried to locate, somewhere in that long list of careful precautions, a single instruction that covered what to do when the abstract danger you'd spent five years avoiding turned out, on direct and unwanted evidence, to sound exhausted and human and frightened of something larger than either of you. She found nothing. Five rules, soon to be six, and not one of them had anticipated this particular complication, because the version of herself who'd written them had never once imagined getting close enough to need it.
She crossed the line out, deliberately, three thick strokes through every word of it, and wrote beneath it instead, in a hand considerably less steady than she would have liked: *Stay away from him. That's still the rule.*
She looked at the sentence for a long moment after writing it, candlelight flickering low across the page, and found, with a discomfort she did not particularly want to examine further tonight, that some small, stubborn part of her did not entirely believe her own handwriting. It was an unfamiliar sensation, doubting a rule she'd written herself, in her own hand, for reasons she still believed in completely. She had never once, in five years, written something down and then immediately suspected she might not actually follow it.
She closed the notebook before that part of her could say anything else, blew out the candle, and lay awake considerably longer than usual, listening to the unfamiliar household breathe around her, thinking — against every rule she'd ever written, against every careful instinct five years had built — about a voice she'd heard exactly once, through a gap in a door she'd been specifically instructed never to disturb.
Somewhere past the second hour, she made herself a small, private bargain, the kind she suspected she'd regret by morning but couldn't quite talk herself out of tonight: she would not seek out that voice again, would not engineer a single excuse to find herself anywhere near that corridor or that door, but she would allow herself, just this once, to wonder — quietly, harmlessly, in the privacy of her own skull where no rule could be broken by mere curiosity — what kind of man sounded that tired underneath all that power, and whether the book she'd half-read in another life had ever once bothered to ask the same question.
It was not an answer. It was, she told herself, simply a small, harmless question, the kind that cost nothing as long as it stayed exactly where it was, tucked quietly away where no rule could be broken by mere curiosity — and on that uncertain, unsatisfying compromise, she finally let herself drift toward sleep.
