Three weeks.
She had known this was coming for three years. She had been building toward it, accumulating the evidence and the relationships and the standing that would make it possible, and now it was three weeks away and she was on the road for what might be the last time before everything changed or didn't.
She had made this journey fourteen times. She knew the quality of each day of it — the first day still feeling like Ardenholt, the middle days with the particular quality of the in-between, the last days with the specific cold that she had come to associate with proximity to the compound. The road had become part of how she thought about the relationship between here and there: eight days of distance that she had ridden enough times to have it mapped in her body.
She was thinking, on the second day of riding, about what to say.
She had been thinking about this for weeks — not about commission process or documentation or Harwick's pending decision. About what Kaelis needed to know before the assessment, and how to say it in a way that was true without being more than he was ready to hold.
She had been careful, for fourteen months, about what she brought to him. She had built incrementally, in the way she built everything: foundation first, structure second, roof last. She had not asked him to hold more than was appropriate to the stage they were at. She had trusted the accumulation.
But this was not incremental. What was coming was not another piece of work or another practice session or another note about root systems. What was coming was the thing itself — the thing she had been building toward since before she had ever met him, since before she had known what building toward it would require — and he deserved to know it was coming before it arrived.
She thought about what the commission representative would see when they came to Witherhold. They would see the documentation she had provided — twelve months of observations, yield data, channel assessment, Aldwin's testimony. But documentation was abstract. What they needed to see was concrete: a person demonstrating that what the documentation described was real and happening and had been happening for a year.
Kaelis could do that. She knew this with the same certainty she knew the east wall tree baseline — from evidence accumulated over time, from consistent observation, from the specific quality of what she had seen in that garden across fourteen visits. He could demonstrate the channel work. He could show a commission representative what *functioning* looked like in the specific way that the confinement order had claimed was impossible. She had seen it. She had documented it. In three weeks, someone with authority would see it too.
He needed to know that was what was expected of him. Not as a performance — as himself, doing what he had been doing in the morning practices for months, in front of someone whose opinion about it would matter.
There was also something else she needed to say — something she had been not-saying for fourteen months, wrapping in reasons the way she had wrapped everything in reasons for most of her life. She had been unwrapping slowly. Today she was going to finish.
She had been talking around the future for fourteen months — *when the channel improves*, *when you have more practice*, *when circumstances change*. She had been careful not to articulate specifically what change looked like, because specificity required certainty she had not had. She had it now, or something close enough to it.
She needed to tell him what she wanted. Not as strategy, not as plan. Just as truth.
She thought about the autumn gathering and what she had said to Calanthe: *what you want matters.* She thought about what Hessa had asked her: *what do you want, not the plan, you.* She thought about what she had told him in the garden: *I wrapped everything in reasons.*
She had been unwrapping for a while now — one conversation at a time, one true thing said without justification, one moment of allowing herself to want what she wanted without immediately embedding it in a strategic framework. She had been getting better at it. He had, she thought, been getting better at it too, in his own way, from his own direction.
It was time to say the thing.
He was not at the east wall tree.
She registered this as she came through the gate — the absence of him in the expected place, the specific rearrangement of her internal map. Then she found him: the northeast corner, the section of wall he had told her about, the place where the autumn light came through at an angle that lasted maybe an hour.
It was not autumn. The light was different now. But he was standing there anyway, looking at something in the wall that she could not see — or looking at nothing, at the wall as a surface, the way a person looked at something when they were not looking at it but were standing in a place they went when they needed to think.
He heard her and turned.
"I know today is different," he said.
He said it before she had crossed the yard to him. Before she had done anything other than come through the gate. He had known, and he had positioned himself in his place rather than the working place, which was its own kind of preparation.
"Yes," she said. "It is."
She crossed the yard. She came to his corner — not the conversational distance, slightly closer, the distance she had gradually been taking over the past several months as the compound had become more familiar and the space between them had changed. She sat down on the low section of wall that ran along the north side.
This was new too. She had never sat in the Witherhold compound. She had always stood, ready to work, ready to move. She sat down, and she looked at the northeast corner, and she said:
"In three weeks, a commission representative is coming here."
He was very still.
"They are reviewing restricted residences," she said. "They will assess whether the criteria for your confinement remain valid. I have submitted documentation arguing that they do not — that the original characterization of the Witherborn bloodline was inaccurate, and that you have demonstrated, over the past year, that the channel functions in the way that bloodlines are supposed to function rather than in the way they claimed it did." She looked at the wall. "The documentation is complete. I have evidence. I have testimony from people with standing. I have a year of observation records that show what you've been doing here."
She had rehearsed this. She had prepared the words. What she had not prepared for was the specific quality of saying them to him — standing in his compound, in his corner, three weeks before everything would be different.
She thought about all the people who had contributed to those nine components: Hessa and her twelve pages of assessment. Mae and her network. Croft and thirty years of watching. Aldwin and six pages in his own hand. Tareth, who had helped without knowing he had also hurt. Calanthe in the corridor. Fenwick from a dinner two years ago. And at the center of all of it: a year of morning practices in a winter garden, a person doing work he had decided he wanted to do, changing something that had been said to be unchangeable.
"I've been building this case for three years," she said. "Since before we met. It's why I came the first time. It's—" She stopped. "It's not the only reason I kept coming. I want you to know that. It's not the only reason anything."
He was still not looking at her. He was looking at the wall.
"I know," he said.
She thought about *I knew from the beginning. I let you come anyway.*
"The assessment will go well," she said. "I believe that. I've prepared for it to go well and I believe the preparation is sufficient." She looked at him. "I need you to be able to demonstrate the channel work to the representative. They won't be practitioners. They won't have the vocabulary. They'll need to see something visible — the directed draw, or the tree response, something that demonstrates control rather than chaos. Just what you've been doing in the morning practices. Just that."
"I can do that," he said.
"I know." She paused. "I know you can."
A silence passed.
In the silence, a bird did something in the courtyard wall. The compound was quiet in the way it was always quiet — the occupied silence of a space with a persistent presence in it. The east wall tree was visible from here, doing measurably more than the minimum.
"If they don't accept the case," he said.
"Then you remain here. And I continue to visit. Nothing changes."
He turned and looked at her.
"You'd still come," he said.
Not quite a question — the specific grammar of someone confirming something they had reached a conclusion about but wanted to hear from the source.
"Yes," she said. "That's not contingent on the outcome."
He held her gaze for a moment. She did not look away. She had learned not to look away from the significant moments — to be present for them rather than managing them.
"If they do accept the case," he said.
"Then there's a process. It's not immediate. There are formal steps — the commission would recommend a change, it would go to the administrative court, there would be a period of—" She stopped. "It's not immediate. But it would mean you could leave."
He looked at the compound. At the walls. At the east wall tree. At the corner of the courtyard where the autumn light fell and he had been standing when she arrived.
"I haven't thought about that," he said. "Leaving. In specific terms."
"I know."
"When I think about the future—" He stopped. Started again. "I've been thinking about the practices. The channel. The tree. Those are — those have a future in them, in the way that things you're improving have a future." He paused. "I haven't thought about the compound having a future that doesn't include me."
She sat with this.
It was the specific quality of someone for whom eleven years of confinement had become the default landscape of their expectations — not a thing they wanted, but a thing they had learned to think forward from. The future contained the compound, and the channel, and the tree, and Liora's visits. It did not contain any other geography. This was not something he had been able to choose. It was what happened when you spent eleven years learning that the safest thing was to want what was available rather than what was not.
She thought about what it would mean to recalibrate that. To expand the map. To start thinking forward from a different starting point — not these walls, but something else.
She thought about the internal map he had been building of Ardenholt. The library shelves he had asked her to describe. The oak tree. The way the estate sloped toward the eastern fields. He had been filling in the blank spaces of the world in his head, she realized — not randomly, but specifically. The spaces she had given him. He had been building toward this even before he knew it was possible.
"Ardenholt," she said.
He looked at her.
"You asked me, in the autumn, what it looked like. You've been building a map of it." She looked at him steadily. "I want you to have the actual version. Not the one from description — the one from being there."
He was very still.
"I want you to see the oak tree," she said. "Not because it's useful or because it would help with the channel or because there's a strategic reason. Because I've been describing it to you for months and I want you to see the thing I've been describing."
She paused.
She had been saying the true thing for a long time. She had been learning to say the true thing without wrapping it in reasons first. This was the truest thing she had said in fourteen months, and she said it plainly, the way she said things she had decided to say:
"I want you in my world. Not as a plan. Just because."
A silence that was different from the other silences — not thinking, not deciding, not the specific qualities of his various quiets. Something more open. She had learned to read his silences the way she had learned to read his expressions: from the evidence of repetition, from building the baseline and tracking deviations from it. This silence was not in her catalogue. It was new. It was the silence of someone receiving something they had not known they were waiting for and had not prepared to receive.
She let it be.
"The oak tree," he said. "The one you put your hands on when you were seven."
"Yes."
"You said it's in the garden."
"Yes. Near the east side. It angles toward the morning light."
He looked at the east wall tree — his tree, the one they had been using for practice, the one that was doing better than it had been a year ago. He looked at it for a long moment.
"Can you show me?" he said. "When I'm there."
She understood. He was not asking about the tree. He was asking about *being there* — using the specificity of the tree as a way to say *yes* to the larger thing, the way he had always used specificity to hold what was too large to say directly.
"Yes," she said. "When you're there, I'll show you."
*When.* Not *if.*
She heard it. She thought he heard it too. She thought about how long they had both been operating in the conditional — *if the channel improves*, *if the assessment goes well*, *if things change*. She had been careful not to say *when* because *when* required a certainty she had been building toward and hadn't been ready to claim.
She was ready to claim it now. And he had said it first.
She stood to go.
There was a quality to the late afternoon light in the compound — specific to this place, to the winter sky above these walls, to the particular angle of the sun that reached here at this hour. She had been noticing it for fourteen months. She was going to notice it differently when she came back in three weeks.
"Three weeks," he said.
"Yes."
He looked at the yard. At the east wall tree. At nothing in particular and everything.
"I'll keep practicing," he said.
Three words. The weight of a year of morning sessions and shared notes and distance and incremental change, compressed into three words.
She had been learning his language for fourteen months — the specific compression of it, the way he said in three words what would take another person thirty. She had a vocabulary for it now. *Alright* was trust. *Good* was care. *I'll be here* was certainty. *I'd like to know* was desire acknowledged. *There is someone now* was the whole truth of the past year in four words.
*I'll keep practicing* meant: I hear what you've told me. I understand what's at stake. I'm going to do what I've been doing, because I've decided I want to do it. I'm ready.
She turned.
"I know you will," she said.
She went through the gate.
She did not look back, because looking back was not necessary. She knew what was behind her: a winter garden, a tree doing better than it had been, a person who had said *when I'm there* and meant it.
Three weeks.
She rode south through the last light, and Croft rode ahead of her, and the road was the road she had ridden fourteen times, familiar and still somehow specific, and she held *when I'm there* the way she held true things: carefully, without wrapping them in reasons, letting them be what they were.
*When I'm there.*
She was going to be ready.
He was going to be ready.
The work was done. What came after was what they had been building toward, together, for fourteen months in a winter garden eight days north of everything she knew.
She trusted the roots.
She trusted the work.
She trusted the wanting.
She rode home.
Three weeks. She had what she needed. He had what he needed. The work had been done for a year and it was real and it was sufficient and in three weeks the commission representative would come and see it.
She thought about what she had said: *I want you in my world. Not as a plan. Just because.*
She had meant it. She had said it without reasons, without wrapping, without the specific defensiveness of someone who was afraid of wanting things that could be taken.
He had said *when I'm there.*
She trusted that too.
The road was familiar, and the cold was the ordinary cold of late winter, and eight days ahead was Ardenholt with its oak tree and its library alcove and its stone corridors, and three weeks was not very long at all.
