She arrived the evening before.
This had not been in the original plan — the original plan had been to arrive the morning of the assessment, with Croft, the way she always arrived. But she had thought about it and changed the plan, and Croft had arranged it without comment, because Croft understood by now the difference between the plans she changed for strategic reasons and the plans she changed for other reasons.
She arrived the evening before because she wanted to be there.
The compound in the evening had a different quality than the compound in the daytime. She had been coming here for fourteen months and she had never been here after the light changed — had always arrived midmorning and left in the afternoon, always moving, always within the structure of a working visit. The evening compound was quieter. The specific cold was the same but the quality of it was different — less active, more settled, the cold of a place at rest rather than a place being moved through.
Kaelis was in the outer yard.
He had known she was coming — Croft had sent word. He had not done anything particular to prepare, which was consistent with who he was: he did not perform for arrival. He was simply there, near the east wall tree, when she came through the gate.
They sat.
She had never sat in the Witherhold compound for a non-working purpose before. She had sat, last visit, to tell him about the commission, but that had been functional sitting — delivering information from a position that happened to be seated. This was different. She sat on the same low section of wall and he sat on the ground, which she had not expected, and they looked at the east wall tree in the specific quality of the compound's evening light.
He was not anxious. She had spent a year learning to read his states and she would have seen anxiety if it were there — the specific stillness of him managing something. This was a different stillness. The stillness of someone who had prepared thoroughly and had finished preparing.
She had not known what it would feel like, being here the evening before something that mattered this much. She had expected some version of the anxious-careful quality she usually brought to important moments — the monitoring, the running of contingencies, the specific internal productivity of someone who turns everything into preparation. What she found instead was that she simply wanted to sit here. In this garden. With this person. On this specific evening that was about to become tomorrow.
She talked about Ardenholt. Not the library or the oak tree — she had described those already. She talked about what the estate looked like in late winter, the specific way the eastern holdings looked right now when the dormant root line was beginning to show the earliest signs of spring, how the soil had changed in the past weeks in a way that was just barely visible if you knew how to look.
He listened in the way he always listened — thoroughly, without interruption, the way of someone for whom information was valuable and not to be wasted by speaking over it.
He asked about the root line. She told him. He asked about the convergence — whether the eastern holdings line and the compound line were still connected. She said yes, they were, and would remain connected as long as both channels were working.
"That will continue," he said. "After."
Not a question.
"Yes," she said. "That doesn't depend on where you are."
He nodded, once, in the specific way that meant: I was confirming something I already believed, and you have confirmed it.
They stayed in the compound until the stars were visible, which was longer than she had ever stayed. She had never done this — stayed into the evening, watched the compound's light change, been here for a purpose other than working. It was, she thought, a small preview of something. Of what it might feel like to be here without the structure of a working visit, without the countdown to departure, without the specific quality of time that was always running.
She did not try to hold onto it. It was here, and then she left, and she trusted she would have versions of it again.
Then she went to the household staff quarters, where a room had been arranged, and she slept.
The deputy's name was Aldric.
She registered this with the specific neutral quality of someone filing information: not Ser Aldric of the Ardenis archive, not anyone she knew, a different Aldric entirely, a man of around fifty with the particular quality of attention she had come to associate with people who spent their professional lives assessing situations. He was not hostile. He was not warm. He was precise, and he had done this before.
He carried a case of documents, which included copies of everything she had submitted. He had read them. She could tell this from the way he moved through the initial review — not reading for the first time, but finding specific passages to confirm against his notes.
She sat across from him in the small room the staff had arranged, and she answered his questions, and she watched him the way she had been watching people in important moments for four years.
Aldric asked questions the way commission officers asked questions — precisely, without the social framing that most conversations included. He did not say *I understand but* or *that's interesting, however.* He asked a question, received an answer, made a note, asked the next question. She had prepared for this. She had been preparing for it, in some form, for three years.
"The bloodline characterization in the original documentation," he said. "You're arguing it was inaccurate at the time, not simply that understanding has changed."
"Both," she said. "There were sources available at the time of the original confinement order that described the Witherborn channel accurately. They weren't referenced. Whether that was deliberate omission or incomplete research, the documentation that supported the confinement didn't reflect the available knowledge."
"The sources you cite in the Hessa assessment."
"Yes. She identified three that predate the original order by at least twenty years."
He made a note. "The channel progress documentation. Fourteen months of observation. Who conducted the observations?"
"I did. Croft accompanied every visit and can confirm the visits occurred and the documentation was produced contemporaneously."
"You have a personal relationship with the subject."
"Yes. Which I disclosed in the submission and which the observation methodology accounts for by focusing on verifiable external evidence — the tree response measurements, the eastern holdings yield data — rather than my assessments of his internal experience."
He looked at her. "You anticipated that concern."
"It was the most obvious challenge to the documentation's credibility," she said. "I tried to account for it."
He made another note. "The Duke's testimony."
She held herself steady. "Yes."
"How was it produced?"
"I asked him to write an account of the events of 1052. He did so voluntarily. He wrote it in his own hand without involvement from me in the content. I received it and added it to the submission."
"He's your grandfather."
"Yes."
"And you asked him to write something that places his own decisions in an unflattering light."
"I asked him to write an accurate account," she said. "He made the decision about what accurate meant."
He looked at her for a moment. Then he looked at his notes.
"I'd like to speak with Lord Kaelis now," he said.
She waited.
She had not expected this to be easy. She had expected it to be precisely what it was: a professional doing a professional's job, asking the questions that needed to be asked, checking the things that needed to be checked. She had prepared for all of it. She trusted the preparation.
What she could not prepare for was the twenty minutes she was not present for.
She stood in the outer yard and looked at the east wall tree and waited.
She thought about what was happening inside — the specific quality of Kaelis answering questions from a stranger about his own experience, his own channel, his own life in this compound. She had watched him do this with Croft, in a different way, about his mother. She had watched him do this with her, incrementally, over fourteen months. She had not watched him do it with someone who had authority over his situation.
But she also knew him well enough to know that he would not perform. He would answer what was asked, in his own language, with the compressed accuracy that was how he operated. She trusted that.
She had a baseline for the east wall tree. She could read its current state from observation. She read it now, not because it told her anything about what was happening inside but because it was something to do with her hands and her attention while the more important thing was happening without her.
The tree was doing well.
She noted this with the specific satisfaction of someone who had been tracking evidence for a year and was watching it continue to be evidence. Whatever Aldric decided, the tree was real. The change was real. It would continue to be real tomorrow and next week and in spring.
When Aldric came out, Kaelis was behind him, and Liora read Kaelis's face in the quick automatic way she had been reading it for fourteen months: not anxious, not performance-satisfied, not any of the things that would have told her the interaction had gone wrong in one way or another. The contained attention that meant he had been doing exactly what he was doing and nothing more.
"He'd like to observe a demonstration," Aldric said. "If you're willing."
The directed draw was not perfect.
She had known there was a possibility of this — had thought about it and decided that imperfect with recovery was more honest than perfect, and that honesty was the right strategy when the person assessing was primarily looking for authenticity rather than performance. She had been right.
The first attempt: he started, felt something he didn't like, stopped. Reset. No expression, no apology, no performance of frustration. Just: that wasn't right, begin again. She knew what he had felt — the channel starting to reach past the proportional, the old habit asserting itself briefly. He had caught it.
That was the progress. Not the perfect second attempt — the fact that he had noticed the first attempt was wrong and had chosen to stop and correct it rather than continue. That was what a year of morning practices produced: not perfection, but the specific awareness that let you catch your own mistakes before they became problems.
The second attempt was correct.
She watched Aldric watch the tree.
He was not a bloodline practitioner — she had known this, had prepared for this, had framed the documentation in language that a non-practitioner could understand. But he was someone who had done enough of these assessments to know what *functioning* looked like versus what *unfunctioning* looked like, and the east wall tree told a clear story: a living thing, receiving something, continuing to function.
"That's the directed draw," she said. "Proportional exchange. The channel takes what the tree offers without depleting it. Hessa's assessment describes the mechanism in detail, but this is what it looks like practically."
Aldric watched for another moment. Then he said, quietly, to Kaelis: "How did you learn to do that?"
Kaelis looked at her — not for permission, not for rescue, just the brief acknowledgment of someone who knows the question is relevant to another person and is letting that person know they know. Then he looked back at Aldric.
"Someone taught me," he said. "She has been coming here for fourteen months. She showed me what the channel was supposed to do and I learned how to do it."
Simple. Direct. True.
Aldric made a note.
He said, at the end, before he left: "The documentation is the most thorough I've encountered for this type of review."
He did not say: the case is strong. He did not say: we'll recommend release. He said what he could professionally say, which was a factual observation about the documentation.
She had been in enough rooms where things were decided to know that *most thorough I've encountered* from someone in his position was not nothing.
He left with Croft, and she and Kaelis were alone in the outer yard for the first time since she had arrived the evening before.
The compound was very quiet.
She had learned, over fourteen months, the specific qualities of this compound's quiet. There was the working quiet of a practice session, focused and directional. There was the thinking quiet of his consideration silences. There was the ambient quiet of a space that had a persistent presence in it and had learned, over eleven years, to be quiet around it.
This was a different quality. The specific stillness of something completed — not resolved, not finished, but done in the way that a particular thing was done. The assessment had happened. The documentation had been reviewed. The demonstration had been made. Whatever came next was not today's work.
She looked at the east wall tree.
"He said one thing before he went," Kaelis said. "When you were reviewing the documentation. He asked me what I would do if the commission recommended release."
She looked at him.
"I said I didn't know," he said. "I said I hadn't thought about it specifically." He paused. "He said that was an honest answer." Another pause. "I think I was supposed to have a plan."
She thought about this. She thought about commission officers and what they expected from people in Kaelis's situation — whether they expected plans, or hopes, or the specific kind of social performance that indicated someone was ready for freedom. She thought about what Kaelis's answer said about him: not the absence of a plan, but the honesty of saying so. Not performing readiness he didn't have. Just: I don't know yet, I've been building toward knowing for fourteen months, and that's the truth.
"Were you worried about that?"
He looked at the tree. "No," he said. "I thought it was the right answer. I don't know. I haven't been planning a future that included leaving for eleven years." He paused. "I've been building one for fourteen months. But I'm not finished building it."
She thought about that. She thought about the fourteen months of notes and practices and east wall tree baselines, about *when I'm there* and *the tree will be better in spring* and *there is someone now.* She thought about a map being built in someone's head, with spaces being filled in slowly, with deliberateness.
"You're building it," she said. "That's enough."
He looked at the east wall tree.
"The tree will keep getting better," he said. "Whatever happens next."
"Yes."
"I'll keep practicing." He paused. "I want that to continue regardless of outcome." He looked at the wall, the specific section where autumn light fell, his corner. "And when the person comes with the result — whatever it is — I want you to be here."
She was quiet for a moment.
Not managing, not organizing, not converting it into something strategic. Just being present with it, in the way she had been learning to be present with true things.
She thought about what he had said: *whatever it is.* Not *if it's good.* Not *if we succeed.* Whatever it is. He was asking for her presence regardless of outcome — was saying that her presence and the outcome were separate things, that one was not contingent on the other.
This was what she had said to him, months ago: *I'll still come. That's not contingent on the outcome.* He had heard it then. He was saying it back to her now, from his own direction.
"Yes," she said. "I'll be here."
He nodded — once, the way he nodded when something had been confirmed that he had already believed.
She went through the gate.
Croft was waiting. The road was ahead. Three to four weeks, he said, for the commission's deliberation.
She rode.
She thought about the assessment — Kaelis's clean second attempt, Aldric's careful note-taking, the moment when Kaelis had said *someone taught me* in the simple direct way of someone who had decided that truth was sufficient. She thought about *most thorough I've encountered* and what it told her about where the case stood. She thought about *I want you to be here* and *whatever it is* and the specific way he had nodded when she confirmed she would. She thought about the east wall tree, which would continue improving whether or not the commission's result went the way she had worked for.
She thought about what three to four weeks felt like at the end of a three-year project. Longer than it seemed. Not long enough to make anything certain. Exactly the right amount of time to trust the work and wait.
Three to four weeks.
She trusted the roots. She trusted the work. She rode home.
