The alarm went off at seven, same as always. Koharu lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling of her apartment while the sound dissolved into the gray Tokyo morning. She didn't reach over to silence it. She just waited until it stopped on its own.
That was new. The waiting.
She used to be the kind of person who silenced alarms before the second beep — already half-dressed, already thinking about the shoot schedule, already running through the day's checklist in her head. Now she lay there and listened to the alarm complete its full cycle, and then the silence after, and then the distant sound of someone else's morning routine bleeding through the thin walls. A neighbor's kettle. The shuffle of slippers. A radio she couldn't quite make out.
She got up.
Bathroom. Face. Coffee that she made but only half-finished. The train.
The Yamanote Line at 8:15 was a specific kind of suffocation — not the pressure of bodies, though there was that too, but the particular sensation of being held upright by a crowd that had no idea you were there. Koharu stood between a man in a gray suit reading his phone and a woman in a yellow coat with earbuds in, and she thought: if I dissolved right now, the space would close up immediately. Like water. Like I was never here.
She used to love the train. She used to put her headphones in and watch the city slide past and feel the particular pleasure of being in motion, of being one small lit point in the enormous moving thing that was Tokyo. Now the windows just gave her back her own reflection — a small woman in a dark coat, looking at the city like it was behind glass.
Which it was. That was the strange thing. It was all behind glass now.
---
She first noticed it six months ago, in the weeks after the funeral.
Not at the funeral itself — she'd moved through that with a kind of terrible efficiency, accepting condolences, making sure Mio's parents had water, answering questions about logistics because someone had to and she knew how to make herself useful. She had done everything right. She had held it together.
It was after. On a Tuesday, maybe three weeks later. She had been walking to a convenience store near the studio — the one on the corner of the street where she and Mio used to stop for onigiri on long shoot days — and she had seen a woman laugh in the exact way Mio used to laugh, head tilted back, hand over her mouth, surprised by her own amusement. And Koharu had stopped walking.
She stood on the sidewalk while the city flowed around her and felt something that wasn't quite grief, wasn't quite panic — something more like the moment when you step off a curb you didn't realize was there. The sudden absence of ground.
She'd stood there for a long time. People moved around her. The woman with the laugh had already disappeared into the crowd.
After that, it got harder to not notice.
The coffee shop where they used to meet on Saturdays. The fabric store in Shimokitazawa where Mio always found something she absolutely didn't need. The platform at Shinjuku Station where they had once waited for a delayed train for forty minutes and invented an entire fictional soap opera about the strangers around them. The studio hallways. The lunch places. The park they cut through in autumn when the leaves were good.
Everywhere she went, there was a ghost. Not a frightening ghost. Just a Mio-shaped absence, fitted precisely into every space she moved through.
She didn't tell anyone. What was there to tell? That she was grieving? Everyone knew. That the city had become full of it? That seemed like something you were supposed to just endure.
She endured. She went to work. She styled shoots, she managed timelines, she ate lunch at her desk and answered emails and took the train home and made coffee she didn't finish. And at ten o'clock at night, she put her earbuds in and listened to Letters After Ten.
---
She had found the podcast through Mio, which meant it had found her through Mio, which meant everything about it was already tender before she'd heard a single episode.
It had been a Sunday in early winter — one of those afternoons that felt thin, like the light had given up trying. They were in Mio's apartment, the small one in Nakameguro that was mostly plants and fabric swatches and half-finished sketches. Mio had been lying on her stomach on the floor going through reference photos, and Koharu had been on the couch pretending to read, and at some point Mio had looked up and said, without preamble: "Hey, have you heard this podcast?"
She held up her phone. The thumbnail was plain — just text on a dark background. Letters After Ten.
"It's this guy in some small town," Mio said. "He reads letters people send in. Anonymous ones. It's — I don't know. He reads them like they matter."
"Most podcasts read things like they matter," Koharu said. "That's the whole format."
"No, but—" Mio made a face, searching for words. "Like, he sounds like someone who actually knows what it feels like. To be the person writing the letter." She paused. "Like he's been somewhere dark and he came back from it. You can hear it."
Koharu had taken the phone and listened for a few minutes, earbud in one ear. The voice was low and unhurried. It had a particular quality she couldn't name at the time — something between intimacy and distance, like a radio signal from far away that was somehow still clear.
"He sounds like someone who knows what it's like to be sad without being swallowed by it," she said.
Mio pointed at her. "Yes. Exactly. He sounds like someone who knows how to be sad without drowning in it."
They had listened together for a while. Outside, the winter light went from thin to gone. Mio had eventually fallen asleep on the floor surrounded by her reference photos, one arm crooked under her head, the other hand still holding her phone. Koharu had put a blanket over her and sat in the quiet apartment listening to the voice until the episode ended.
She hadn't thought much of it then. It was just a good Sunday afternoon. One of many.
She didn't know it was one of the last.
---
Six months later, on a Thursday that looked exactly like every other Thursday, her phone rang while she was between meetings.
Aunt Machi. The name sat on the screen for a moment before Koharu answered.
"I was going to call you anyway," Machi said, which was probably not true, but was the kind of thing you said to make a phone call feel less abrupt. "How are you? Don't lie."
"I'm fine," Koharu said, and then, because Machi had specifically asked her not to lie: "I'm tired."
"Mm." A pause. The sound of something being set down — a cup, maybe. "I'm calling about the shop. Your grandmother's shop. I've been managing it since she passed, but I'm thinking of relocating to be closer to Yuna. I wanted to ask what you think before I start talking to buyers."
Koharu had known this was coming, in the abstract way you know things you haven't fully processed. Mizuse Laundry. The laundry shop in Fuyunagi that her grandmother had run for over thirty years, that smelled like warm fabric and ocean air, that had a bell above the door and a machine that was always about to break.
"You're selling it," she said.
"I'm considering it. But I wanted to ask you first. If you wanted to—" Machi paused. "I don't know. Come and look at it. Before anything is decided."
Koharu stood in the hallway of her office building, people moving past her on both sides, the fluorescent lights doing what fluorescent lights always do. She thought about the laundry shop. The particular yellow of the light inside it. The bench along the wall where she used to sit as a child, watching the dryers turn.
"I could come for a season," she said. "To help you sort things out before the sale."
"That's not what I said."
"I know. But that's what I'm offering."
Another pause. Then Machi, who was not a sentimental person and had never pretended to be: "It's just a laundry shop. It's old and one of the machines makes a sound like it's dying. But if you remember how to get here — then come and look at it before you decide anything."
After she hung up, Koharu stood in the hallway for another moment. Around her, people were having conversations on phones, walking briskly, existing in the way that the city made you exist — efficiently, purposefully, forward.
She looked out a window at the city below, at the grid of rooftops and the distant shimmer of glass, at Tokyo doing what Tokyo always did, enormous and indifferent, full of every memory she had.
For the first time in six months, she breathed all the way out.
---
That night, she opened her laptop to find train schedules to Fuyunagi.
The search window was open, the cursor blinking. She typed the departure station, the destination. The results came back — trains, connections, times, prices.
She booked one for Saturday. Early morning.
Then, almost without meaning to, she opened her podcast app. The latest episode of Letters After Ten was there, unplayed. She had stopped listening somewhere around the third month — too close to the last Sunday at Mio's apartment, too close to everything. But she'd kept the bookmark. She hadn't deleted it.
She looked at it for a moment.
Then she closed the app without playing it, set her phone face-down on the table, and started making a list of what she would need to pack.
She told herself it was just one season. Just to help sort out the paperwork. She would go, she would do what needed doing, and then she would come back and figure out what came next.
She almost believed it.
---
The studio was a particular kind of exhausting.
It wasn't the work itself — Koharu had always been good at the work, had always found something clarifying in the mechanics of it, in the problem-solving of making bodies look like the idea of bodies, of making fabric behave the way it was supposed to in photographs rather than the way it actually did in life. She was precise and fast and had a good eye for what the camera would do to color, and for most of her twenties that had felt like enough. Like a thing worth being.
But somewhere in the months since Mio, the work had become a series of tasks she completed rather than a thing she did. She went through the motions with perfect accuracy and felt nothing in particular. The difference was invisible from the outside. No one had noticed. Or if they had, they hadn't said anything.
Shun hadn't said anything. Which was its own kind of answer.
She didn't think about Shun much anymore, which she supposed was a kind of progress. He was still in the industry, still photographing the same campaigns, still saying the right things to the right people at the right moments. They had been together for two years and she had thought — not that she would have said this out loud, she was too careful for that — she had thought he was someone who would stand beside her when things got hard. She had thought that was what they were building toward.
Then the Harada campaign had gone wrong.
It wasn't her fault, not entirely, not in any way that anyone with full information would have blamed her for. But the creative director had needed someone to absorb the fallout, and Shun had been there when it happened, had watched it unfold, had known exactly what had occurred — and he had said nothing. He had been very quiet and very careful and had protected the thing he needed to protect, which was not her.
She hadn't yelled at him. She wasn't sure why — maybe because she was too tired, maybe because some part of her had already known, the way you sometimes know things before you know them. She had just looked at him in the parking lot afterward, while the production team packed up around them, and said: "You knew."
And he had said: "It was complicated."
And she had said: "Okay."
And that had been, more or less, the end of it.
That was three months after Mio. She had not been in a particularly strong position to absorb another loss. She had absorbed it anyway, the way she absorbed everything — efficiently, quietly, without troubling anyone. She had gotten very good at not troubling anyone.
The train home from those late shoots was always half-empty, just the occasional late-night commuter, the scattered remnants of the evening city making their way home. Koharu would sit by the window and watch the lights stream past and listen to whatever Itsuki was reading that night, and for twenty minutes or forty minutes or however long the ride took, she would feel slightly less like someone who had lost her footing in the world.
She had never told Mio about the Shun situation. Mio had already been gone by then. This was one of the harder things to sit with — the growing list of things she would have told Mio, the conversations she was still composing in her head for an audience that no longer existed.
She had started doing it without noticing: narrating her days as if Mio could hear. Walking past the coffee shop: Mio, they changed the menu again, you would hate it. On the train: remember that guy we made up the soap opera about, I think I just saw his fictional wife. In the studio, adjusting a collar that refused to sit right: the fabric is doing that thing again, the thing you always said was a moral failing of the weave.
It didn't make her feel better, exactly. But it made the city slightly less like a place she was moving through alone.
---
She packed lightly, which was not her natural instinct. Her natural instinct was to prepare for every contingency — extra everything, backup options, because you never knew what the day would require of you. But she was going to a small town to look at a laundry shop, and she was only staying for one season, and she was tired of the weight of being prepared for everything.
One bag. Wool sweaters. The kind of clothes you wore when no one was watching.
Her apartment looked the same when she left it. She paused in the doorway and looked back at it — the clean surfaces, the plants she had remembered to water, the kitchen where she made coffee she didn't finish. It looked like the apartment of someone who had their life in order. It looked like a place that didn't know anything had changed.
She pulled the door shut.
On the walk to the station, she passed the corner where the coffee shop was. She didn't look at it directly. But she noticed, in the peripheral way she had trained herself to notice things now, that there was a woman sitting at the window table — Mio's table, the one in the corner by the radiator where the light was always slightly better than everywhere else. The woman had her head bent over something, reading. She had a yellow scarf.
Koharu kept walking.
The station was loud in the early morning way — different from the evening loud, less frantic, more the sound of people who have made their peace with the hour. She found her platform, checked the board, stood and waited.
When the train came, she got on. Found a window seat. Set her bag in the overhead rack.
As the train pulled out of the station, she watched the city begin to thin — the density of it loosening, buildings giving way to smaller buildings giving way to space. She had forgotten that there was space outside Tokyo. Not just parks and intervals between structures, but actual uninterrupted space, the kind that had its own silence.
The sun was not yet fully up. The light was the color of something that hadn't decided what it wanted to be.
Somewhere in her bag, her phone held the unplayed episode of Letters After Ten. She didn't take it out.
She watched the window instead, and let the city she had lived in for most of her adult life get smaller and smaller, and thought about nothing at all, which was its own small mercy.
The announcement came over the intercom somewhere past Utsunomiya — a town name she didn't recognize, then another, the conductor's voice calm and impersonal. Outside, the snow had begun. Not heavily, not yet, just the first suggestion of it, thin flakes catching the early light before dissolving against the glass.
Koharu pressed two fingers to the cold window.
One season, she told herself. She would go, she would help Machi sort out the paperwork, she would look at the shop her grandmother had kept for thirty years, and then she would decide what came next. She was good at deciding what came next. She was good at figuring out what needed to be done and doing it.
She would be fine.
The snow thickened slightly, not enough to obscure the view, just enough to soften it — the edges of things going gauzy, the distance going white. The train moved through it steadily, unhurried, as though it had made this journey many times before and knew there was no need to rush.
She watched the snow and said nothing.
There was no one to say anything to. But that, she was slowly learning, was its own kind of quiet. Not the quiet of absence. Just — quiet. The train. The snow. The window between her and the world.
She let herself have it, for now.
